Herein, we report a novel β-Ag2MoO4/g-C3N4 heterojunction system with highly enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity. β-Ag2MoO4 nanoparticles were in situ loaded onto thin g-C3N4 nanosheets to make these heterojunction photocatalysts. The photocatalytic activities of these heterojunctions and the relevant samples were investigated by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation (λ u003e 400 nm). β-Ag2MoO4/g-C3N4 heterojunctions were found to be much more active than pristine β-Ag2MoO4, g-C3N4, or a mechanical mixture of both in the degradation of organic pollutants. The optimal catalyst had a β-Ag2MoO4/g-C3N4 mass ratio of 37.5%. Through relevant characterization, the upgraded photocatalytic activities of the β-Ag2MoO4/g-C3N4 heterojunctions were mainly attributed to the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carries. Superoxide radical anions (˙O2−) and photogenerated holes (h+) were found to be the main active species.

Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.
Novel C3N4–CdS Composite Photocatalysts with Organic–inorganic Heterojunctions: in Situ Synthesis, Exceptional Activity, High Stability and Photocatalytic Mechanism

Abstract:Novel organic-inorganic composites composed of two visible light responsive semiconductors of graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) and CdS were successfully synthesized via an "in situ" precipitation-deposition method. The C3N4-CdS heterostructures were fabricated by depositing CdS nanoparticles onto the surface of C3N4. The morphology and optical property of compsoites can be tuned by adjusting the mass ratio of C3N4-CdS, which determines the enhanced level of photocatalytic activity. The optimum activity of 0.7C(3)N(4)-0.3CdS photocatalyst is almost 20.5 and 3.1 times higher than those of individual C3N4 and CdS for the degradation of methyl orange, and 41.6 and 2.7 fold higher for the degradation of 4-aminobenzoic acid, respectively. Moreover, its activity is also much higher than those of C3N4-TiO2 and CdS-TiO2 composites, as well as N-modified TiO2. Of special significance is that the present C3N4-CdS composites exhibit high stabilities under illumination, in contrast with CdS. The enhancement in both performance and stability should be assigned to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges originating from the well-matched overlapping band-structures and closely contacted interfaces. Our work highlights that coupling semiconductors with well-matched band energies provides a flexible route to improve the activity and stability of photocatalysts, and gives ideas for the design and synthesis of other highly active and stable materials.
BiOBr–carbon Nitride Heterojunctions: Synthesis, Enhanced Activity and Photocatalytic Mechanism

Abstract:The high recombination rate of photogenerated charges is the main problem that limits the photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, we have reported novel heterojunctions of BiOBr–carbon nitride (BiOBr–C3N4) fabricated by depositing BiOBr nanoflakes onto the surface of C3N4. These visible light responsive heterojunctions possess intimately contacted interfaces and well-aligned straddling band-structures, which are propitious to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, bringing an improved performance. Their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by degrading Rhodamine B in aqueous solution induced by visible or indoor light. The optimum photocatalytic activity of the 0.5BiOBr–0.5C3N4 heterojunction was almost 4.9 and 17.2 times as high as those of individual BiOBr and C3N4 under visible light irradiation, and 1.5 and 48.9 times as high under indoor light irradiation, respectively. Moreover, its activity was also much higher than those of TiO2 (P25), BiOBr–TiO2, and C3N4–TiO2 heterojunctions. On the basis of experimental and theoretical results, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed, which revealed that organic molecules were mainly oxidized by holes concentrated in the valence band of C3N4. Our work highlights that the design of heterojunctions with well-aligned straddling band-structures by combining two visible light responsive semiconductors provides an efficient method to prepare new photocatalysts working with natural light.

Abstract:The construction of heterojunctions is an effective way to improve the activity of photocatalysts. Most heterojunction photocatalysts are portrayed by the deposition of semiconductor nanoparticles on other semiconductor supports (often 3D particles or 2D sheets), but 1D-2D hybridized heterojunctions portrayed by the supporting of semiconductor nanowires onto semiconductor nanosheets are rare. Herein, we report a novel Ag6Mo10O33/g-C3N4 1D-2D hybridized heterojunction with highly enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity. Ag6Mo10O33 nanowires were in situ loaded onto g-C3N4 nanosheets by controlling the pH value (similar to 2) of the synthesis mixture. Abstract:Photocatalysis clean hydrogen production is a modern technology for simultaneously addressing and solving energy and environmental issues, of which the most critical part is to develop a highly efficient photocatalyst. In this work, we rationally designed and synthesized a metal-free 2D/2D boron/g-C3N4 nanosheet heterojunction (B-CN) through an electrostatic self assembly thermal induction combined with ultrasound-assisted technology. The optimized photocatalyst 3.0B-CN possesses a hydrogen generation rate 35 times that of g-C3N4, which provided an impressive H-2 evolution photocatalytic activity. The tight heterojunction architecture via the coupling of two-dimensional boron nanosheets and g-C3N4 nanosheets realizes the enhanced visible light absorption, the increasing carrier concentration, and the rapid transfer of interfacial charge and thus hinders the electron-hole recombination. The coupling of two 2D metal-free nanosheet materials for constructing a 2D/2D layered heterojunction in our work offers pioneering tactics for the design and synthesis of green nonmetal 2D photocatalytic HER materials in the future.
A Novel Z-scheme Ag3VO4/BiVO4 Heterojunction Photocatalyst: Study on the Excellent Photocatalytic Performance and Photocatalytic Mechanism

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional microspheres mediator-free Z-scheme Ag3VO(4)/BiVO4 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully obtained for the first time. The photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared photocatalyst was systematically examined via the photocatalytic reduction of Cr6+ and oxidation of Bisphenol S under visible light irradiation. Among these samples, 0.24-Ag3VO(4)/BiVO4 exhibits the highest photocatalytic performances, the photocatalytic reduction and oxidation efficiency of 74.9 and 94.8%, respectively, can be achieved. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the build-in electric field assisted charge transfer between the Ag3VO(4) and BiVO4, and the increasing lifetime of the charge carrier confirmed by the results of time-resolved fluorescence spectra and photoelectrochemical measures. Moreover, based on the results of free radical scavenging activity test, and EPR experiments, it has been verified that the Ag3VO(4)/BiVO4 heterostructures follow a typical Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism rather than conventional type-II heterojunction charge transfer mechanism. Furthermore, the theoretical understanding of the underlying mechanism was also supported, while the energy band structure, and Fermi level were systematically calculated using the density functional theory approach. The results show that a built-in electric field directed from Ag3VO(4) to BiVO4 surface was established as an equalized Fermi level was reached, which benefits the separation of photogenerated charge carriers in the way of a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The strategy to form the three-dimensional microspheres Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst may offer new insight into the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism for applications in the field of solar energy conversion.
G-C3n4/pt/bivo4 Nanocomposites for Highly Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic Removal of Contaminants and Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:Inspired by natural photosynthesis, artificial heterojunction photocatalysts have been extensively studied. Herein, a novel ternary graphitic carbon nitride/platinum/bismuth vanadate (g-C3N4/Pt/BiVO4) photocatalytic system was successfully synthesized, where Pt/BiVO4 nanosheet is anchored on the surface of layered g-C3N4, as evidenced by structural observations. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy are carried out to identify the position of the conduction band and valence band. A Z-scheme is used to interpret the superior photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/Pt/BiVO4 and further verified by the capture of free radicals and terephthalic acid photoluminescence experiments. Compared with the g-C3N4/BiVO4 binary system, the Z-scheme g-C3N4/Pt/BiVO4 photocatalyst not only possesses enhanced carrier separation efficiency but also maintains sufficient redox properties, thus inducing superior photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the novel Z-scheme photocatalyst exhibits excellent recycle stability, which could provide inspiration for the rational design of efficient and practical photocatalysts for environmental pollution treatment. The ternary photocatalyst also exhibits significantly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production performance.
2D/3D Interface Engineering: Direct Z-scheme G-C3n4/ymno3 Heterojunction for Reinforced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a two-dimensional (2D) photocatalyst, but it appears a mediocre catalytic property due to the recombination of charge carriers. Constructing heterojunctions can boost the separation and suppress the recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs. For the conventional Type-II heterojunction, the oxidation ability is significantly reduced due to the decreasing of band gap. We try to maintain its oxidation capacity and promote the artificial bandgap by tailoring a Z-scheme heterojunction through interface engineering. Herein, we grafted different proportions of YMnO3 3D-nanoparticles onto g-C3N4 2D-nanosheets. This special 2D/3D mixed-dimensional nanocomposite exhibits efficient charge carrier transport performance according to the electrochemistry and photocurrent measurement. The outstanding photocatalytic oxidation ability can be verified by the rate of Rhodamine B degradation, which is 3.8 and 2.3 times of YMnO3 and g-C3N4, respectively. Theoretical calculation, active group capture experiments and electron spin resonance indicate the energy band position and the reactive groups (superoxide radicals and holes). The optimized g-C3N4/YMnO3 heterojunction utilizes the interfacial synergistic effect to achieve a composition of vigorous oxidizing ability and outstanding visible light harvesting. This work will pave a promising access for mechanism and interface engineering of other g-C3N4-based Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Abstract:In this work, highly efficient g-C3N4/Bi4O7 heterojunction photocatalysts have been successfully fabricated by a facile method. Compared with the bare photocatalysts, the obtained g-C3N4/Bi4O7 hybrid photocatalysts exhibited efficient degradation activity toward methylene blue (MB), phenol, rhodamine B (RhB), and bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation. The influences of different g-C3N4 contents on the photocatalytic efficiency of the hybrid photocatalysts have been investigated. The results revealed that the g-C3N4/Bi4O7 with g-C3N4 mass ratio of 30% exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. The activity enhancement should be ascribed to the improved visible light adsorption as well as the effective Z-scheme charge transfer according to the energy band theory. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) shows that the absorption edge of g-C3N4 move towards longer wavelength with the increment of Bi4O7 component. The strong connection between g-C3N4 and Bi4O7 was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Subsequently, the effective Z-scheme charge transfer has also been verified by using transient photocurrent measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Controlled experiments proved that active species of O2- and h+ were produced in the degradation system, which played the major role in the degradation of MB. A possible Z-scheme degradation mechanism over g-C3N4/Bi4O7 hybrid photocatalysts was proposed.
Novel S-scheme 2D/2D BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:The design and construction of heterojunction photocatalysts, which possess a staggered energy band structure and appropriate interfacial contact, is an effective way to achieve outstanding photocatalytic performance. In this study, 2D/2D BiOBr/g-C3N4 heterojunctions were successfully obtained by a convenient in situ self-assembly route. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, 99% of RhB (10 mg·L−1, 100 mL) was efficiently degraded by 1.5-BiOBr/g-C3N4 within 30 min, which is better than the performance of both BiOBr and g-C3N4, and it has superior stability. In addition, the composite also exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2 production. The enhanced activity can be attributed to the intimate interface contact, the larger surface area, and the highly efficient separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. Based on the experimental results, a novel S-scheme model was proposed to illuminate the transfer process of charge carriers. This study presents a simple way to develop novel step-scheme photocatalysts for environmental and related applications.

Abstract:Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts based on g-C 3 N 4 generally need to recombine g-C 3 N 4 and a wide bandgap semiconductor. This structure is limited by the large bandgap of the constituent material, which can effectively suppress carrier recombination while limiting the absorption of visible light. Due to the superior up-conversion photoluminescence properties of the carbon quantum dots (CQDs), this dilemma can be solved ingeniously by adding CQDs to the composite. Moreover, the charge reservoirs of CQDs are conducive to the charge carrier separation effect. In this work, a novel CQDs-modified Z-type photocatalyst is constructed and the successful implantation of CQDs is demonstrated. The composite catalyst exhibits broad-spectrum response to visible light and the overall performance is obviously superior to that of the binary MoO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction. The high efficiency and versatility of the degradation imply that the newly prepared CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 /MoO 3 is a versatile photocatalyst for the removal of various target pollutants in the environment.

Abstract:One of the important procedures to enhance the activity of semiconductors as a catalyst is the fabrication of Ag-based semiconductors with a large bandgap energy. Here, a novel Ag/β-Ag 2 WO 4 /V 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized by a solvothermal method. The heterojunction structure was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, DRS, FE-SEM, XRD, PL, and EDS techniques. The photo-ability of V 3 O 4 , V 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 , and Ag/β-Ag 2 WO 4 /V 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 toward the actuation of C(OH)–H bond was investigated using a visible lamp. The prepared photocatalyst illustrated impressive activity compared to pure V 3 O 4 and V 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 , which was 67% under aerobic environments due to the considerable separation of the photogenerated charge pairs and enhanced active sites after the incorporation of nanoparticles. Accordingly, this catalyst should be introduced as a qualified photocatalyst, because of its activity, selectivity, and stability.

Abstract:The construction of efficient and low-cost photocatalytic systems is a major challenge in the field of photocatalysis. An efficient heterojunction photocatalyst designed for water splitting is also an interesting prospect in energy conversion. In this study, a novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via a simple solvothermal method. Mn0.43Cd0.57S was loaded on the surface the of noble metal-free transition metal oxide ZnCo2O4 to prevent the agglomeration of particles, resulting in efficiently improving the photocatalytic performance of the material. Due to the Fermi level balance, the band bending of the two materials constructs a p-n heterojunction, which stimulates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the CB of Mn0.43Cd0.57S to the CB of ZnCo2O4. The uniformly dispersed p-n heterojunction structure effectively suppresses the recombination of photoinduced charges and preserves stronger redox charges. As a result, the established Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 heterojunction showed the best photocatalytic hydrogen production concentration (92.1 mmol g−1 h−1), which was 4.7 times that of the original Mn0.43Cd0.57S (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and 54.2 times that of ZnCo2O4 (1.7 mmol g−1 h−1). This strategy will provide new insights into the development of new photocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalysis technology driven by solar energy is considered to be promising for solving energy crisis and environmental problems. Graphitic carbon nitride has been widely researched in the photocatalysis field due to its suitable band positions, non‐toxicity, easy synthesis, high stability, and low cost. However, the slow separation and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, the poor visible light response and the low specific surface area seriously limit the photocatalytic activity of g‐C 3 N 4 . Here, firstly, g‐C 3 N 4 nanosheets with a large specific surface area of 152.2 m 2 g −1 which provide more surface‐active sites for photocatalysis were prepared by secondary calcination method. Next, MoS 2 and metal–organic framework (MIL‐101(Cr)) were tightly bonded on g‐C 3 N 4 nanosheets to form ternary g‐C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 /MIL‐101(Cr) heterojunction photocatalyst. In which, a ternary dual Z‐scheme heterojunction photocatalyst composed of g‐C 3 N 4 , MoS 2 , and MIL‐101(Cr) was constructed to facilitate the separation and the migration of photogenerated charges. At the same time, MoS 2 enhanced the visible light response of the ternary photocatalyst. The optimal ternary photocatalyst displayed the highest activity for methyl orange degradation (degradation efficiency of 98% in 60 min) under visible light irradiation. Finally, a photocatalytic mechanism of a dual Z‐scheme electron transfer channel and h + ‐·O 2 − double oxidation sites were proposed and discussed.

Abstract:Employing semiconductor photocatalysis to transform solar energy into chemical energy provides a practicable strategy for the alleviation of energy and environmental crisis. Graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) is a popular 2D photocatalyst with numerous advantages, such as visible light response, low cost, and high stability. However, single g‐C3N4 photocatalyst displays poor performance due to fast recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. To improve this limitation, many research works have focused on the construction of g‐C3N4‐based 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts by hybridizing g‐C3N4 with other 2D materials. The intimate face‐to‐face contact in 2D/2D heterojunction offers large contact area and plentiful channels for the migration and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Furthermore, 2D/2D heterojunction inherits the strengths of 2D structure, including high specific surface area, abundant adsorption sites and active sites. Herein, the preparation, mechanism, and application of g‐C3N4‐based 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts are reviewed. Three common preparation methods are summarized, including solid phase reaction, in situ growth, and electrostatic self‐assembly. Various photocatalytic mechanisms are discussed, including traditional type‐II, Z‐scheme and S‐scheme mechanisms. A series of applications in energy and environment fields are illustrated. Finally, future directions for the development of g‐C3N4‐based 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts are proposed.

Abstract:Novel g-C3N4/CoO nanocomposite application for photocatalytic H2 evolution were designed and fabricated for the first time in this work. The structure and morphology of g-C3N4/CoO were investigated by a wide range of characterization methods. The obtained g-C3N4/CoO composites exhibited more-efficient utilization of solar energy than pure g-C3N4 did, resulting in higher photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution. The optimum photoactivity in H2 evolution under visible-light irradiation for g-C3N4/CoO composites with a CoO mass content of 0.5 wt % (651.3 μmol h-1 g-1) was up to 3 times as high as that of pure g-C3N4 (220.16 μmol h-1 g-1). The remarkably increased photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/CoO composites was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the junction or interface formed between g-C3N4 and CoO.

Abstract:Constructing multi-heterojunction photocatalysts with multi-sources for carrier generation and with multi-channels for carrier transmission is one of the effective methods for enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Here, a novel TiO2/g-C3N4/Ag-AgBr (TCNAAB) multi-heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully constructed by depositing Ag-AgBr nanoparticles onto 3D spherical TiO2/g-C3N4. With the optimal ratio of TiO2, g-C3N4 and Ag-AgBr, the TCNAAB-50 composite had the highest H2 evolution activity and generated 940.5 μmol g−1 of H2, which was 8.24 times and 2.72 times higher than that generated by single TiO2 and binary TiO2/g-C3N4, respectively. Meanwhile, TCNAAB-50 also exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity toward methyl orange (MO) with the degradation efficiency of 77.6% under LED light. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the multi-sources for carrier generation and the multi-channels for carrier transmission of the constructed multi-heterojunction, which help to effectively enhance the light absorption efficiency and the carrier separation and transmission. Based upon PL spectra, photoelectrochemical properties, radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectra, a novel double Z-scheme heterojunction bridged by silver was proposed. The design of high-efficiency multi-heterojunction with multi-carrier excitation sources and multi-carrier transmission channels can be employed in improving the photocatalytic activity of single or binary component photocatalysts.

Abstract:2D layered photocatalysts with proper electronic structure have sparked much attention in the field of visible-light photocatalysis for H-2 production. Herein, by simply calcining the mixture of ultrathin g-C3N4 (CNN) and NaBH4, heteroatom B and N defect were simultaneously introduced into g-C3N4. The obtained modified g-C3N4 (BDCNN) was further coupled with 2D flower-like CdS nanosheet. The optimal 2D/2D BDCNN/CdS-15% heterojunction behaved ideal photocatalytic activity for H-2 revolution by water splitting, and the highest H-2 revolution rate was as high as 1013.8 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was 6.7 times, 2 times, and 5.8 times of the corresponding values of pristine CNN, BDCNN and CdS respectively. It was evidenced that the band structure of 2D/2D BDCNN/CdS-15% was well tuned for better visible-light adsorption and higher separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers for enhancing H-2 revolution performance. The achievement in this study provided informative principles for exploring g-C3N4 based heterojunctions with higher H-2-production performance.
