Abstract:Z. Z. Yang, J. Zhu, F. X. Liang, and co-workers develop on page 4469 a facile approach to synthesize regular and uniform polymeric Janus nanodiscs with alternative layers of block copolymers by partial disintegration of ellipsoidal nano particles. Further selective growth of materials onto the desired sides of the discs extends the composition and tunes the microstructure for achieving functional nanodiscs. Many other Janus nanomaterials with tunable shapes are expected using similar methods.

Abstract:We demonstrated experimentally and theoretically the principle to control the discotic morphology of particles with a layered internal structure. The packing of surfactants tailored the curvature and set the shape of the elastic membrane produced as the surface of the emulsions crystallized via surface freezing. Using these membranes as the nuclei, emulsions crystallized from the surface to the centre, forming a layered structure. The final shape of the disks could be either biconcave or flat circular depending on the defect structures of the layers. We confirmed that the final aspect ratio of these disks could be controlled by varying co-surfactant concentration on the surface. We also showed that the morphology of anisotropic particles is vital to their self-assembling behaviours. This surface controlled organization of molecules and colloids offers novel routes for soft material design, fabrication, and utilization at micro-scales.

Abstract:Ultrathin magnetic Fe3O4 nanodiscs with thicknesses of similar to 20 nm and diameters ranging from 500 to 1000 nm have been obtained on a large scale by a surfactant-assisted solvothermal process. Transmission electron microscopy characterizations show that the nanodiscs grow along the [I 101 direction. NaOH and PEG-20000 (PEG stands for polyethylene glycol) have key effects on the morphology of the nanodiscs. In addition, the magnetic hysteresis loop of the ultrathin nanodiscs is obtained at room temperature.

Abstract:We fabricated for the first time thermo-sensitive discotic liquid crystals by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) onto zirconium phosphate (ZrP) platelets using pre-irradiated polymerization. The I-N transition was investigated by adjusting the temperature for a single set of samples. We found that soft disks self-assemble into nematic liquid crystals in a wider thickness-over-diameter ratio than do hard disks.

Abstract:The polymer/inorganic composite trilayered Janus mesoporous nanodiscs are synthesized by coassembly of gelable poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(3-triethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PTEPM-b-PS) and PEO-b-PS via a sol-gel process at an emulsion interface. Bimodal phase separations are responsible for the formation of isolated nanodiscs and mesopores within the discs. The Janus mesoporous nanodiscs are amphiphilic to form superstructures in dispersions. They can serve as a solid surfactant to stabilize emulsions.

Abstract:Aiming to synthesize multiferroic materials in microscale, a microfluidic device capable of generating multiferroic Janus microparticles is demonstrated. Through bonding two polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers “face to face,” laminar flow containing an upper layer and a lower layer can be realized. Accordingly, poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) ferroelectric polymers and Fe3O4 ferromagnetic particles are separately encapsulated in the two layers of a single droplet. Numerical simulation enables the analysis of cross-mixing between the two counterparts and helps to find an optimized location for adding subsequent ultraviolet treatment, which will polymerize the droplets into Janus particles without any side effect. By modulation of the flow rate, the size of the Janus particles can be precisely tuned. Finally, the ferroelectricity and magnetism of the Janus particles are verified by the magnetization and polarization measurements, indicating the multiferroic nature.

Abstract:This paper describes a rational strategy to obtain self-assembled two-dimensional (2D) nanocrystals with definite and uniform thickness from a series of molecular Janus particles based on molecular nanoparticles (MNPs). MNPs are 3D framework with rigid shapes. Three different types of MNPs based on derivatives of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), [60]fullerene (C60), and Lindqvist-type polyoxometalate (POM) are used as building blocks to construct these amphiphilic molecular Janus particles by covalently connecting hydrophobic crystalline BPOSS with a charged hydrophilic MNP. The formation of 2D nanocrystals with an exact thickness of double layers of molecules is driven by directional crystallization of the BPOSS MNP and controlled by various factors such as solvent polarity, number of counterions, and sizes of the MNPs. Strong solvating interactions of the ionic MNPs in polar solvents (e.g., acetonitrile and dimethylformamide) are crucial to provide repulsive interactions between the charged outlying ionic MNPs and suppress further aggregation along the layer normal direction. The number of counterions per molecule plays a major role in determining the self-assembled morphologies. Size matching of the hydrophobic and ionic MNPs is another critical factor in the formation of 2D nanocrystals. Self-assembly of rationally designed molecular Janus particles provides a unique "bottom-up" strategy to engineer 2D nanostructures.

Abstract:A particle mold synthesis of 2D Janus nanomaterials is proposed by crosslinking of copolymer self-assembled monolayers confined within the mold domains. Onto the silica (SiO2) particle surface, mold domains with functional groups such as imidazole are generated. The model copolymer of polyacrylic acid-block-polystyrene (PAA-b-PS) can be preferentially absorbed onto the domains via electrostatic interactions, forming a self-assembled mono-layer. In a cosolvent such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), the crosslinking occurs within the whole of the PAA side. A Janus disc is thus achieved after detachment from the particle upon breaking the specific interaction. In a poor solvent, the crosslinking slowly occurs from the periphery, giving Janus nanorings. The rings evolve into discs with further crosslinking. The mold particles can be recycled to synthesize the same 2D Janus materials.

Abstract:Asymmetric Janus materials are of wide‐spread interest due to their unique anisotropic and directional features. In our work, through a simple combination of nanosphere lithography at the solution interface and dopamine chemistry, a new approach for the facile synthesis of large, asymmetric, free‐standing, 2D photonic Janus films with a highly tunable Janus balance and multiple functionalities is developed. Herein we rationally exploit the unique properties (reducibility, self‐adhesive nature, and post‐modification ability) of the polydopamine (PDA) layer and the good deformation and dissolution ability of polystyrene (PS). The precisely controllable chemical compositions on the PDA layer and the multi‐variable morphologies from the PS part offer us a great chance to tune the Janus balance of the film in different dimensions. As a demonstration of the resultant Janus films for potential applications, femtoliter cup arrays are achieved after the removal of PS, which are used for confined crystallization. Good surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement of the Ag‐metallic Janus film is shown, which confirms this excellent platform for creating new functional materials. Our study not only bridges dopamine chemistry with 2D photonic crystals but also opens up new avenues for artificially designed Janus nanoarchitectures with multiple functions.

Abstract:In this work, highly crystalline gamma-MnO2 nanodisks are synthesized via a simple microemulsion process by using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a capping layer. Detailed information about the morphology, such as size, shape and crystallinity, was investigated by using x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as high resolution TEM (HRTEM). SQUID measurements were also carried out to explore the magnetic properties on the nanodisks, which may promote their future application in nanodevices and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Uniform and aligned nickel nanochains with interlaced-nanodiscs structure were first synthesized by using a template-free magnetic-field-assisted method at room temperature. The interlaced-disc nanochains were composed of nanodiscs with diameters of similar to 90 nm and thicknesses of similar to 10 nm. An attachment process has been proposed to explain the observed growth of the nanodiscs. With concentration of the OH-increased, the morphology of the products transforms from star-to interlaced-nanodisc-like nanochains. Systematic magnetic measurements demonstrate that the well-aligned interlaced-nanodisc-like Ni nanochains have coercivity of about 300 Oe and effective anisotropy of about five times more than the bulk value.

Abstract:Janus nanosheets of polymer inorganic layered composites are fabricated by crushing the corresponding Janus composite hollow spheres, which are synthesized by materialization of an amphiphilic emulsion interface with self-organized sol-gel process and subsequent polymer grafting onto the lipophilic side. The Janus composite nanosheets serve as solid surfactants to stabilize emulsion droplets, which are tolerant against solvents. Janus balance of the composite nanosheets is tunable crossing from more lipophilic to hydrophilic by alteration of polymer content. Thereafter, continuous phase of the emulsions can be inverted.

Abstract:Flexible Janus nanosheets of molecular scale thickness (3.5 nm) are massively fabricated by a sol-gel process of a self-assembled monolayer of an amphiphilic silane onto a template. Groups of both sides are tuneable, and thus performance of the nanosheets, for example, is pH responsive. As a flexible solid emulsifier, the desired species can be wrapped with an individual nanosheet, which is pH triggered.

Abstract:Janus materials have distinct surfaces on their opposite faces. Graphene, a two-dimensional giant molecule, provides an excellent candidate to fabricate the thinnest Janus discs and study the asymmetric chemistry of atomic-thick nanomembranes using covalent chemical functionalisation. Here we present the first experimental realisation of nonsymmetrically modified single-layer graphene-Janus graphene-which is fabricated by a two-step surface covalent functionalisation assisted by a poly(methyl methacrylate)-mediated transfer approach. Four types of Janus graphene are produced by co-grafting of halogen and aryl/oxygen-functional groups on each side. Chemical decorations on one side are found to be capable of affecting both chemical reactivity and physical wettability of the opposite side, indicative of communication between the two grafted groups. This novel asymmetric structure provides a platform for theoretical and experimental studies of two-dimensional chemistry and graphene devices with multiple functions.

Abstract:In this work, we study the structure transformations of cylinder-forming polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS31k-b-PDMS14.5k) confined in cylindrical nanopores. PS-b-PDMS nanotubes, nanospheres, and curved nanodiscs are ingeniously prepared by a facile template wetting strategy using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Quantitative analyses of the structure transformations from nanospheres to curved nanodiscs are also conducted, showing that the lengths of the curved nanodiscs can be controlled by adjusting the annealing temperature and time. Furthermore, the PDMS domains of the nanostructures can be selectively etched using HF solutions, generating porous PS nanostructures. This work not only offers versatile routes to prepare block copolymer nanostructures with controlled shapes but also provides a deeper understanding of the structure transformation of block copolymers in confined geometries.

Abstract:Janus particles with features of an anisotropic photonic band gap (PBG) structure and magnetic property have been achieved by phase separation and self-assembly of nanoparticles in microfluidic droplets. The resultant particles enable optical encoding and magnetically controllable motion, making them excellent functional encoded particles in biomedical applications.

Abstract:A double exposure technique has been used to fabricate nanoimprint stamps for making monodisperse nanorods with controllable lengths. The nanorod length is defined by a normal photolithography projection process whereas the nanorod width is defined by an edge-lithography process using a soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) contact mask. Taking advantage of edge-lithography, the nanorod width can be less than the diffraction limit of the exposure light. Using these nanorod stamps, synthetic magnetic multilayer (SMM) nanorods have been fabricated using nanoimprint lithography, resulting in a length variation of ∼3%. Nanorod magnetic properties have been characterized in both longitudinal and in-plane transverse directions of the nanorods. A theoretical model has been established to explain the magnetic responses and has revealed that both shape anisotropy and interlayer interactions are important in determining the properties of SMM nanorods.
