Abstract:For nonnegative matrices A = (a(ij)) epsilon R-nxm, B = (b(ij)) epsilon R-mxn and any t epsilon [0, 1], we present sigma(S-t(A, B)) <= sigma(A)(t)sigma(B)(1-t), in which St (A: B) = (a(ij)(t) b(ji) (1-t) ) and sigma(.) denotes the largest singular value. Using the result obtained, the inequality sigma(A omicron B) <= root(A omicron A)sigma (B omicron B) for matrices A = (a(ij)) and B = (b(ij)) E C-nxm is established. Here, A omicron B = (a(ij)(b) over bar (ij)), and (b) over bar (ij) denotes the complex conjugate of bij. Finally, some inequalities for the spectral radius are also studied.

Abstract:The parallel multisplitting nonstationary iterative Model A and Models 1–2 were introduced by Bru et al. [Bru, Elsner, Neumann, Models of parallel chaotic iteration methods, Linear Algebra Appl. 103 (1988) 175–192], and Climent et al. [Climent, Perea, Tortosa, Zamora, Convergence theorems for parallel alternating iterative methods, Appl. Math. Comput. 148 (2004) 497–517], respectively. Using nonnegative splitting theory, we present some new comparison theorems between two general parallel multisplittings of Model A and Models 1–2 when the coefficient matrix is a monotone matrix. Particularly, we establish some sufficient conditions for strict inequalities in comparisons of spectral radii of different iteration matrices.

Abstract:We consider some conjectures of D. Hershkowitz and A. Berman in concerning the localization of eigenvalues of P- and P0-matrices. We show that two of these conjectures are false. We improve a classical formula of Routh's to prove our results. Also we reconsider a theorem of Kellogg's with the generalized result.

Abstract:A classical result of Erdős and Rademacher (1955) indicates a supersaturation phenomenon. It says that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with at least $\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \rfloor +1$ edges, then $G$ contains at least $\lfloor {n}/{2}\rfloor$ triangles. We prove a spectral version of Erdős--Rademacher's theorem. Moreover, Mubayi [Adv. Math. 225 (2010)] extends the result of Erdős and Rademacher from a triangle to any color-critical graph. It is interesting to study the extension of Mubayi from a spectral perspective. However, it is not apparent to measure the increment on the spectral radius of a graph comparing to the traditional edge version (Mubayi's result). In this paper, we provide a way to measure the increment on the spectral radius of a graph and propose a spectral version on the counting problems for color-critical graphs.

Abstract:Let Mn(R) be the linear space of all n×n matrices over the real field R. For any A∈Mn(R), let ρ(A) and ‖A‖∞ denote the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A, respectively. By introducing a class of transformations φa on Mn(R), we show that, for any A∈Mn(R), ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0. If A∈Mn(R) is nonnegative, we prove that ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if and only if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0, and ρ(A)=‖A‖∞ if and only if the transformation φ‖A‖∞ preserves the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A. As an application, we investigate a class of linear discrete dynamic systems in the form of X(k+1)=AX(k). The asymptotical stability of the zero solution of the system is established by a simple algebraic method.

Abstract:Consider the product of m independent n -by- n Ginibre matrices and their inverses, where , p is the number of Ginibre matrices, and q is the number of inverses of Ginibre matrices. The maximum absolute value of the eigenvalues of the product matrices is known as the spectral radius. In this paper, we explore the limiting spectral radii of the product matrices as n tends to infinity and m varies with n . Specifically, when is a fixed integer, we demonstrate that the limiting spectral radii display a transition phenomenon when the limit of p / n changes from zero to infinity. When , the limiting spectral radii for Ginibre matrices have been obtained by Jiang and Qi [J Theor Probab 30: 326–364, 2017]. When q diverges to infinity as n approaches infinity, we prove that the logarithmic spectral radii exhibit a normal limit, which reduces to the limiting distribution for spectral radii for the spherical ensemble obtained by Chang et al. [J Math Anal Appl 461: 1165–1176, 2018] when .

Abstract:The Kadison-Singer Conjecture, as proved by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava (MSS) [Ann. Math. 182, 327-350 (2015)], has been informally thought of as a strengthening of Batson, Spielman, and Srivastava's theorem that every undirected graph has a linear-sized spectral sparsifier [SICOMP 41, 1704-1721 (2012)]. We formalize this intuition by using a corollary of the MSS result to derive the existence of spectral sparsifiers with a number of edges linear in their number of vertices for all undirected, weighted graphs. The proof consists of two steps. First, following a suggestion of Srivastava [Asia Pac. Math. Newsl. 3, 15-20 (2013)], we show the result in the special case of graphs with bounded leverage scores by repeatedly applying the MSS corollary to partition the graph, while maintaining an appropriate bound on the leverage scores of each subgraph. Then, we extend to the general case by constructing a recursive algorithm that repeatedly (i) divides edges with high leverage scores into multiple parallel edges and (ii) uses the bounded leverage score case to sparsify the resulting graph.

Abstract:We show a sharp and rigid spectral generalization of the classical Bishop-Gromov volume comparison theorem: if a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\geqslant 3$ satisfies \[ \lambda_1\left(-\frac{n-1}{n-2}\Delta+\mathrm{Ric}\right)\geqslant n-1,\] then $\operatorname{vol}(M)\leqslant \operatorname{vol}(\mathbb S^{n})$, and $\pi_1(M)$ is finite. Moreover, the constant $\frac{n-1}{n-2}$ cannot be improved, and if $\operatorname{vol}(M)=\operatorname{vol}(\mathbb S^n)$ holds, then $M\cong \mathbb S^{n}$. A sharp generalization of the Bonnet-Myers theorem is also shown under the same spectral condition. The proofs involve the use of a new unequally weighted isoperimetric problem, and unequally warped $\mu$-bubbles. As an application, in dimensions $3\leqslant n\leqslant 5$, we infer sharp results on the isoperimetric structure at infinity of complete manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and uniformly positive spectral biRicci curvature.

On differences of two harmonic numbers

Abstract:We prove that the existence of infinitely many $(m_k, n_k) \in \mathbb{N}^2$ such that the difference of harmonic numbers $H_{m_k} - H_{n_k}$ approximates 1 well $$ \lim_{k \rightarrow \infty} \left| \sum_{\ell = n}^{m_k} \frac{1}{\ell} - 1 \right|\cdot n_k^2 = 0.$$ This answers a question of Erdős and Graham. The construction uses asymptotics for harmonic numbers, the precise nature of the continued fraction expansion of $e$ and a suitable rescaling of a subsequence of convergents. We also prove a quantitative rate by appealing to techniques of Heilbronn, Danicic, Harman, Hooley and others regarding $\min_{1 \leq n \leq N} \min_{m \in \mathbb{N}}\| n^2 \theta - m\|$.

Two conjectured strengthenings of Turán's theorem

Abstract:We investigate two conjectured spectral graph theoretic strengthenings of Turán's theorem. Let $\mu_1 \ge \ldots \ge \mu_n$ denote the eigenvalues of a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges and clique number $\omega(G)$. The concise version of Turán's theorem is that $n/(n - d)$ is a lower bound for the clique number $\omega(G)$, where $d$ is the average degree. Our first conjecture is that $d$ can be replaced in this bound with $\sqrt{s^+}$, where $s^+$ is the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues. We prove this conjecture for triangle-free, weakly perfect and Kneser graphs and for almost all graphs. We have also used various software tools to search for a counter-example. Nikiforov proved a spectral version of Turán's theorem that \[ \mu_1^2 \le \frac{2m(\omega(G) - 1)}{\omega(G)}, \] and Bollobás and Nikiforov conjectured that for $G \not = K_n$ \[ \mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2 \le \frac{2m(\omega(G) - 1)}{\omega(G)}. \] For our second conjecture, we propose that for all graphs $(\mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2)$ in this inequality can be replaced by the sum of the squares of the $\omega(G)$ largest eigenvalues, provided they are positive. We prove the conjecture for weakly perfect, Kneser, and classes of strongly regular graphs. We also provide experimental evidence and describe how the bound can be applied. Liu and Ning published a wide-ranging paper entitled ``Unsolved Problems in spectral graph theory'', and these two conjectures were placed second and fourth in their list of such problems.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and spectral radius $\lambda_{1}$. Let $bk\left( G\right) $ stand for the maximal number of triangles with a common edge in $G$. In 1970 Nosal proved that if $\lambda_{1}^{2}>m,$ then $G$ contains a triangle. In this paper we show that the same premise implies that \[ bk\left( G\right) >\frac{1}{12}\sqrt[4]{m}. \] This result settles a conjecture of Zhai, Lin, and Shu. Write $\lambda_{2}$ for the second largest eigenvalue of $G$. Recently, Lin, Ning, and Wu showed that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph of order at least three, then \[ \lambda_{1}^{2}+\lambda_{2}^{2}\leq m, \] thereby settling the simplest case of a conjecture of Bollob\'{a}s and the author. We give a simpler proof of their result.

Abstract:In this paper, some convergence theorems for the double splitting of a monotone matrix or a Hermitian positive definite matrix are presented. Two comparison theorems for two double splittings of a monotone matrix are obtained. Meanwhile, we establish a new sufficient condition for convergence of the Gauss-Seidel double SOR method for an H-matrix.

Suppose that $u$ and $v$ are connected by a path $w_0(=v)w_1cdots w_{s-1}w_s(=u)$ where $d(w_i)=2$ for $1leq ileq s-1$. Let $G_{p,s,q}(u,v)$ be the graph obtained by attaching the paths $P_p$ to $u$ and $P_q$ to $v$. Let $s=0,1$. Nikiforov and Rojo [On the $alpha$-index of graphs with pendent paths, Linear Algebra Appl. 550 (2018) 87--104] conjectured that $rho_{alpha}(G_{p,s,q}(u,v))u003crho_{alpha}(G_{p-1,s,q+1}(u,v))$ if $pgeq q+2.$ In this paper, we confirm the conjecture. As applications, firstly, the extremal graph with maximal $A_{alpha}$-spectral radius with fixed order and cut vertices is characterized. Secondly, we characterize the extremal tree which attains the maximal $A_{alpha}$-spectral radius with fixed order and matching number. These results generalize some known results.
