Abstract:Ghost imaging is an indirect system that allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing the object. The speckle pattern that contains the information about light and objects has increasingly become a popular topic in pseudothermal light ghost imaging. However, existing research still has encountered problems of poor imaging quality and slow sampling speeds. We propose a ghost imaging method based on N-order speckle patterns to recover the object (NSGI). The N-order speckle patterns combine N independent laser speckles individually produced by passing an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser through a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). The sampling frequency can be improved by controlling the trigger signals of different DMDs. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified that our method can increase sampling speed and reconstruction accuracy. Abstract:Imaging through scattering medium is challenging but important for different applications. Most advances rely on computational image reconstruction from scattering signals. In these conventional investigations, speckles were always treated as scrambled grainy patterns. Directly seeing through scattering diffusers has never been realized. Here, we report a new strategy to see through random diffusers directly using self-imaging of speckles. By analyzing the physics, a direct observation strategy through scattering media is reported with improved image quality. Using this method, we experimentally demonstrated reconstruction-free real-time imaging of static and moving objects with their actual orientation information under single-wavelength and white light illumination. We also proposed a modified speckle autocorrelation imaging (SAI) method inspired by the self-imaging results. Importantly, our strategy requires no pre-calibration or acquisition of point-spread-function, no active control of wavefronts or complicated equipment, nor iterations or carefully adjusted parameters, paving the way towards rapid and high-quality imaging through scattering diffusers.

Abstract:Human ability to visualize an image is usually hindered by optical scattering. Recent extensive studies have promoted imaging technique through turbid materials to a reality where color image can be restored behind scattering media in real time. The big challenge now is to recover a 3D object in a large field of view with depth resolving ability. Here, we reveal a new physical relationship between speckles generated from objects at different planes. With a single given point spread function, 3D imaging through scattering media is achieved even beyond the depth of field (DOF). Experimental testing of standard scattering media shows that the original DOF can be extended up to 5 times and the physical mechanism is depicted. This extended 3D imaging is expected to have important applications in science, technology, bio-medical, security and defense.

Abstract:To address the fundamental challenges of imaging light in scattering media, we report an imaging method based on the principle of speckle correlations. It does not require raster scanning of the shaped focus or an implanted guidestar to locate and control incident illumination. More importantly, our approach eliminates the need for collecting thousands of speckle patterns for real-time iterative optimization, as only one captured speckle pattern is needed. By incorporating the traditional wavefront shaping concept and calculating the optimal phase mask, our method enables image recovery from the speckle pattern, resulting in significant time savings.

Abstract:Although significant progress has been made in microwave imaging, real-time imaging, especially for objects behind walls or closed obstacles, remains a technical challenge. In this work, highly efficient imaging for complex-structured objects surrounded by a closed obstacle was experimentally demonstrated. The imaging equations are derived based on a combination of the inverse-scattering problem and the concept of compressed sensing. Making use of the spatial sparsity of objects and obstacles, the compressed imaging can be implemented using a time-division multi-antenna setup with reduced transmitting antennas. Owing to the spatial compressed sensing applied to the sparse imaging region and objects, the imaging time can be reduced by two orders of magnitude compared with the conventional twofold subspace-based optimisation method with a comparable imaging quality. Taking advantage of the sparsity of the entire imaging area, objects with larger relative permittivity can also be reconstructed. The proposed method can be potentially used in applications such as security examination through boxes. It also provides a new clue for solving the practicability difficulty faced by existing microwave imaging systems.

Abstract:Imaging through scattering medium has long been one of the challenges in many fields. At present, many invasive and non-invasive methods have been proposed to image through scattering medium. However, these methods are only limited to the dark field scenario, which are very sensitive to the background illumination and leads to the failure of the reconstruction process. In this work, we proposed an improving method that enables imaging through scattering medium under strong background illumination. It consists of retrieving the target from the speckle patterns and removing the background illumination in the autocorrelation images. Our method can retrieve the feature and spatial information of the target from a single shot of the camera image without complicated phase-retrieval algorithm. In addition, our method also provides an efficient solution for scattering imaging of wide-spectrum targets, and the color information will be displayed in the multispectral image of the final result.

Abstract:Memory-effect-based methods have been demonstrated to be feasible to observe hidden objects through thin scattering layers, even from a single-shot speckle pattern. However, most of the existing methods are performed with narrowband illumination or require point light-sources adjacent to the hidden objects as the references, to make an invasive pre-calibration of the imaging system. Here, inspired by the shift-and-add algorithm, we propose that by randomly selecting and averaging different sub-regions of the speckle patterns, an image pattern resembling the autocorrelation (we call it R-autocorrelation) of the hidden object can be extracted. By performing numerical simulations and experiments, we demonstrate that comparing with true autocorrelation, the pattern of R-autocorrelation has a significantly lower background and higher contrast, which enables better reconstructions of hidden objects, especially in the case of broadband illumination, or even with white-light.

Abstract:Imaging using scattering media is a very important yet challenging technology. As one of the most widely used scattering imaging methods, speckle autocorrelation technology has important applications in several fields. However, traditional speckle autocorrelation imaging methods usually use iterative phase recovery algorithms to obtain the Fourier phase of hidden objects, posing issues such as large data calculation volumes and uncertain reconstruction results. Here, we propose a single-shot scattering imaging method based on the bispectrum truncation method. The bispectrum analysis is utilized for hidden object phase recovery, the truncation method is used to avoid the computation of redundant data when calculating the bispectrum data, and the method is experimentally verified. The experimental results show that our method does not require uncertain iterative calculations and can reduce the bispectrum data computation by more than 80% by adjusting the truncation factor without damaging the imaging quality, which greatly improves imaging efficiency. This method paves the way for rapid imaging through scattering media and brings benefits for imaging in dynamic situations.

Abstract:Optical imaging through complex scattering media is one of the major technical challenges with important applications in many research fields, ranging from biomedical imaging, astronomical telescopy, and spatially multiplex optical communications. Although various approaches for imaging though turbid layer have been recently proposed, they had been limited to two-dimensional imaging. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach for three-dimensional single-shot imaging of objects hidden behind an opaque scattering layer. We demonstrate that under suitable conditions, it is possible to perform the 3D imaging to reconstruct the complex amplitude of objects situated at different depths.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-speed method to image objects through a thin scattering medium and around a corner. The method employs a reference object of known shape to retrieve the speckle-like point spread function of the scatterer. We extract the point spread function of the scatterer from a dynamic scene that includes a static reference object, and use this to image the dynamic objects. Sharp images are reconstructed from the transmission through a diffuser and from reflection off a rough surface. The sharp and clean reconstructed images from single shot data exemplify the robustness of the method.

Abstract:Imaging through scattering media is still a formidable challenge with widespread applications ranging from biomedical imaging to remote sensing. Recent research progresses provide several feasible solutions, which are hampered by limited complexity of targets, invasiveness of data collection process and lack of robustness for reconstruction. In this paper, we show that the complex to-be-observed targets can be non-invasively reconstructed with fine details. Training targets, which can be directly reconstructed by speckle correlation and phase retrieval, are utilized as the input of the proposed speckle pattern estimation model, in which speckle modeling and constrained least square optimization are applied to estimate the distribution of the speckle pattern. Reconstructions for to-be-observed targets are realized by deconvoluting the estimated speckle pattern from the acquired integrated intensity matrices (IIMs). The qualities of reconstructed results are ensured by the stable statistical property and memory effect of laser speckle patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reconstruct complex targets in high quality and the reconstruction performance is robust even much less data are acquired.

Abstract:Imaging through scattering medium has long been one of the challenges in many fields. At present, many invasive and non-invasive methods have been proposed to image through scattering medium, but due to various limitations, these methods are hard to cope with imaging and tracking the moving object at the same time. Here we introduce a guide point at the object plane and adjust its position to keep it in the same memory effect range with the object. By calculating the autocorrelation of the speckle pattern, we can directly recover the feature and spatial position of the hidden object. Besides, our method can also be used for scattering imaging of multispectral objects. By separating the multispectral speckle pattern into different spectral channels and calculating their autocorrelations, the spectral features of the hidden object can be retrieved by spatially superimposing these autocorrelation images. Our method can image the hidden object in high fidelity from a single speckle pattern without iterative phase-retrieval algorithm, which greatly reduces the complexity and computation burden of the process, therefore it can be used for monitoring the moving object through dynamic varying samples.

Abstract:Due to the complex of mixed spectral point spread function within memory effect range, it is unreliable and slow to use speckle correlation technology for non-invasive imaging through scattering medium under broadband illumination. The contrast of the speckles will drastically drop as the light source's spectrum width increases. Here, we propose a method for retrieving the optical transfer function with several speckle frames within memory effect range to image under broadband illumination. The method can be applied to image amplitude and colored objects under white LED illumination. The method based on the mulit-frame speckles provide more reliable results with faster convergence speed than single-shot imaging.

Abstract:Imaging beyond the memory effect (ME) is critical to seeing through the scattering media. Methods proposed before have suffered from invasive point spread function measurement or the availability of prior information of the imaging targets. In this Letter, we propose a prior-information-free single-shot scattering imaging method to exceed the ME range. The autocorrelation of each imaging target is separated blindly from the autocorrelation of the recorded dual-target speckle via Fourier spectrum guessing and iterative energy constrained compensation. Working together with phase retrieval, dual targets exceeding the ME range can be reconstructed via a single shot. The effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by simulated experiments and a real imaging system.

Abstract:Spectral imaging can obtain spatial and spectral information of an object and play an important role in many application scenarios. Computational spectral imaging through scattering media utilizes the spectrally sensitive properties of scattering media as a filter for spectral imaging. The spatial and spectral information are reconstructed simultaneously by deconvolution with point spread function (PSF). Invasive spectral imaging imposes stringent constraints on the measurement accuracy of PSF and application scenarios. Here, we demonstrate a non-invasive multispectral scattering imaging method via optical transfer function (OTF) retrieval. The method uses multi-frame speckles to non-invasively retrieve the OTF of imaging system. Similar to the spectral filter property of PSF in the space domain, OTF at different wavelengths can be employed to filter and reconstruct the multispectral information of mixed speckle in the frequency domain. Our method overcomes the need for invasive measurements and is applicable to a wide range of scenarios for static and dynamic objects, providing a new approach to multispectral imaging.

Abstract:Non-invasive imaging through scattering media is still a challenging task, especially when the imaging target is complex. This paper presents a novel imaging method through scattering media based on speckle pattern estimation and deconvolution. Different from previous frameworks based on PSF-adjusting or PSF-capturing that need to invasively put a point source at the imaging area, we utilize the non-invasive imaging system based on speckle scanning and memory effect. Phase retrieval results of simple targets behind the scattering media are used as the input of the proposed speckle pattern estimation model, in which speckle modeling and constrained least square optimization are applied to estimate the distribution of speckle pattern. The estimated speckle pattern is exploited in deconvoluting the integrated intensity matrices (IIMs) of the scattered images to recover the complex targets. Experimental results show that the proposed method can recover the imaging targets behind the scattering media much more accurate and stable than the existing phase retrieval methods.

Abstract:Speckle correlation imaging is a typical method to image through strongly scattering medium. However, limited by the optical memory effect range, this method is hard to image multiple objects that are randomly distributed on the object plane with strong background illumination. To solve this problem, we proposed a new method that allows to image multiple objects with strong background illumination. It consists of isolating speckle pattern of each object with an image difference process and eliminating the interference of the background noise with the principal components analysis (PCA) technique. Our method can realize imaging of more than two objects through the scattering medium, and compared with other methods, our method can provide better observations of the objects in the bright field scenarios.

Abstract:Optical imaging through scattering media is a long-standing challenge. Although many approaches have been developed to focus light or image objects through scattering media, they are either invasive, restricted to stationary or slowly-moving media, or require high-resolution cameras and complex algorithms to retrieve the images. Here we introduce a computational imaging technique that can overcome these restrictions by exploiting spatial-temporal encoded patterns (STEP). We present non-invasive imaging through scattering media with a single-pixel photodetector. We show that the method is insensitive to the motions of media. We further demonstrate that our image reconstruction algorithm is much more efficient than correlation-based algorithms for single-pixel imaging, which may allow fast imaging in currently unreachable scenarios.
