Abstract:In this Letter, we present a mechanism for effectively broadening the bandwidth of second-harmonic generation (SHG) with the metamaterial-based artificial optical nonlinearity. As the nonlinear response of the artificial nonlinearity arising from the magnetoelectric coupling constructed by the meta-molecule (MM) structure, the broadband second-order nonlinearity can be built by simply combining the MMs with different geometrical sizes together. The physical model and the numerical simulation fully support the artificial generation and modulation of the broadband second harmonics. Our work suggests a new route for realizing the on-chip custom-designed nonlinear optical devices with broadband operation.

Abstract:The second-harmonic generation (SHG) from the doubly-resonant metasurfaces composed of the U-shaped and the rectangular apertures on an optically opaque gold film is investigated theoretically. By engineering the fundamental plasmonic resonances of the composite metasurfaces to match the excitation and the second-harmonic wavelengths, respectively, the doubly-resonant enhanced SHG intensity of almost an order of magnitude is obtained, compared with the singly-resonant U-apertures. In addition, the satisfaction of doubly-resonant condition can be extended to a wide wavelength range by changing the refractive index of the surrounding medium, which benefits from the two fundamental plasmonic resonances oscillating at frequencies of a two-fold relationship. Our work provides a new way to enhance the efficiency of nonlinear harmonic generation.

Abstract:A prominent nonlinear optical phenomenon that is extensively studied using nanostructured materials is second-harmonic generation (SHG) as it has applications in various fields. Achieving efficient SHG from a nanostructure requires a large second-order nonlinear susceptibility of the material system and large electromagnetic fields. For practical applications, the nanostructures should also have low losses, high damage thresholds, large bandwidths, wavelength scalability, dual mode operation in transmission and reflection, monolithic integrability, and ease of fabrication. While various approaches have demonstrated efficient SHG, to the best of our knowledge, none have demonstrated all these desired qualities simultaneously. Here, we present a hybrid approach for realizing efficient SHG in an ultrathin dielectric-semiconductor nonlinear device with all the above-mentioned desired properties. Our approach uses high quality factor leaky mode resonances in dielectric metasurfaces that are coupled to intersubband transitions of semiconductor quantum wells. Using our device, we demonstrate SHG at pump wavelengths ranging from 8.5 to 11 μm, with a maximum second-harmonic nonlinear conversion factor of 1.1 mW/W2 and maximum second-harmonic conversion efficiency of 2.5 × 10–5 at modest pump intensities of 10 kW/cm2. Our results open a new direction for designing low loss, broadband, and efficient ultrathin nonlinear optical devices.

Tunable and Dual-broadband Giant Enhancement of SHG and THG in a Highly-engineered Graphene-Insulator-Graphene Metasurface

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel scheme to dramatically enhance both the second- and third-harmonic generation in a graphene-insulator-graphene metasurface. The key underlying feature of our approach is the existence of a double-resonance phenomenon, namely the metasurface is designed to possess fundamental plasmon resonances at both the fundamental frequency and the higher harmonic. In particular, this dual resonant field enhancement at the two optical frequencies, combined with a favorable spatial overlap of the optical near-fields, lead to the increase of the generated higher harmonic by several orders of magnitude. Remarkably, we demonstrate that by tuning the Fermi energy of the graphene gratings the dual-resonance property can be locked-in over a broad spectral range of ~20 THz, and equally important, the enhanced nonlinear frequency generation process can be readily switched in the same device between the second and third harmonic. This new type of graphene metasurface could open up new avenues towards the development of novel ultra-compact and multi-frequency active photonic nanodevices.

Abstract:This work investigates a metasurface design to achieve remarkable second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency and enhance effective nonlinear susceptibility using the finite element method. The elements of the designed structure are composed of a rectangular split-ring resonator Ag film, a bowtie-shaped Ag nanoantenna, and a pair of Bi bars that induce nonlinear optical phenomena due to the nonuniform distribution of the electric and magnetic fields within the device surface. The simulation results agree perfectly with the theory and demonstrate outstanding achievements in terms of SHG conversion efficiency (η) and effective nonlinear susceptibility (χeff(2)). Specifically, the metasurface reaches a peak η value of 4.544×10-8 and an effective nonlinear susceptibility of 3.4×104 pm/V. This work presents a novel and versatile design to achieve high η and χeff(2) in an SHG metasurface.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a nonlinear reflective metasurface-based frequency mixing system able to perform second-harmonic generation (SHG) and third-harmonic generation (THG). The metasurface consists of a planar bidimensional alignment of unit-cells, each of which encompasses a receiving element at fundamental frequency, and two transmitting elements operating at double and triple the fundamental frequency, respectively. The TX/RX elements within each unit-cell are connected via a microwave network to a RF mixing circuit that performs the conversion, assisted by an RF amplifier that improves the overall conversion efficiency. Efficient switchable SHG and THG frequency conversions are demonstrated by both full-wave simulations and experiments. For the input fundamental frequency of 3 GHz, the conversion efficiencies for SHG and THG are 55.5% and 42.6%, respectively.

Abstract:We employed both theoretical calculations and experiments to study the nonlinear responses in optical metamaterials. The spectra of second-harmonic generations measured on a fishnet metamaterial are in quantitative agreements with calculations based on full-wave numerical simulations combined with field integrations, both exhibiting ~80 times enhancements at the magnetic resonance frequency. Our calculations explained several interesting features observed experimentally, and suggested an optimal metamaterial structure to yield the strongest nonlinear signals.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have provided a promising approach to enhance the nonlinearity at subwavelength scale, but usually suffer from a narrow bandwidth as imposed by sharp resonant features. Here, we counterintuitively report a broadband, enhanced second-harmonic generation, in nanopatterned hyperbolic metamaterials. The nanopatterning allows the direct access of the mode with large momentum, rendering the rainbow light trapping, i.e. slow light in a broad frequency, and thus enhancing the local field intensity for boosted nonlinear light-matter interactions. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, we fabricated a nanostructured Au/ZnO multilayer, and enhanced second harmonic generation can be observed within the visible wavelength range (400-650 nm). The enhancement factor is over 50 within the wavelength range of 470-650 nm, and a maximum conversion efficiency of 1.13×10 −6 is obtained with a pump power of only 8.80 mW. Our results herein offer an effective and robust approach towards the broadband metasurface-based nonlinear devices for various important technologies.

Abstract:Previous subwavelength imaging using hyperlens is based on negative constitutive parameters that are realized by strongly dispersive materials and work only in a narrow frequency band. Here, we demonstrated that subwavelength imaging can be achieved in a broad frequency band using non-resonant magnetic metamaterials. The metamaterial shows an elliptical dispersion relation and can be fabricated by metallic closed-rings with a broadband magnetic response. With this elliptically dispersive material, most of the evanescent waves with high-k modes can be converted to propagating modes and the subwavelength information is reconstructed. Both simulation and experiment results show that this kind of metalens can achieve a broadband subwavelength imaging effect.

Abstract:Integrated nonlinear metasurfaces leading to high-efficiency optical second harmonic generation (SHG) are highly desirable for optical sensing, imaging, and quantum photonic systems. Compared to traditional metal-only metasurfaces, their hybrid counterparts, where a noncentrosymmetric nonlinear photonic material is incorporated in the near-field of a metasurface, can significantly boost SHG efficiency. However, it is difficult to integrate such devices on-chip due to material incompatibilities, thickness scaling challenges, and the narrow band gaps of nonlinear optical materials. Here, we demonstrate significantly enhanced SHG in on-chip integrated metasurfaces by using nanometer thin films of ferroelectric Y:HfO2. This material has the merit of CMOS compatibility, ultraviolet transparency up to 250 nm, and significant scalability down to sub-10 nm when deposited on silicon. We observe a 20-fold magnitude enhancement of the SHG intensity from the hybrid metasurface compared to a bare ferroelectric HfO2 thin film. Moreover, a 3-fold SHG enhancement is observed from the hybrid metasurface compared to a control structure using nonferroelectric HfO2, demonstrating a major contribution to the SHG signal from ferroelectric Y:HfO2. The effective second-order nonlinear optical coefficient χ(2) of Y:HfO2 is determined to be 6.0 ± 0.5 pm/V, which is comparable to other complex nonlinear photonic oxide materials. Our work provides a general pathway to build an efficient on-chip nanophotonic nonlinear light source for SHG using ferroelectric HfO2 thin films.
Broadband second harmonic generation in whispering gallery mode resonators

Abstract:Optical frequency conversion processes in nonlinear materials are limited in wavelength by the accessible phase matching and the required high pump powers. In this letter, we report a novel broadband phase matching (PM) technique in high quality factor (Q) whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators made of birefringent crystalline materials. This technique relies on two interacting WGMs, one with constant and the other with spatially oscillating phase velocity. Thus, phase matching occurs cyclically. The technique can be implemented with a WGM resonator with its disk plane parallel to the optic axis of the crystal. With a single beta barium borate (BBO) resonator in that configuration, we experimentally demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) to harmonic wavelengths from 780 nm in the near infrared to 317 nm in the ultraviolet (UV). The observed SHG conversion efficiency is as high as 4.6% (mW)-1. This broadband PM technique opens a new way for nonlinear optics applications in WGM resonators. This work is also the first reported continuous wave UV generation by direct SHG in a WGM resonator

Abstract:This paper investigates a remarkable second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency with high effective nonlinear susceptibility based on metasurface, and the investigation evaluates the optical properties using the finite element method in both the frequency and time domains. The proposed structure comprises noble metal and dielectric components, including a split-ring resonator (SRR) Ag rectangular film, an SRR Bi rectangular film and an Ag circular ring, forming a coupled system that produces nonlinear optical effects. The results obtained show a good agreement with the theoretical formulas and the designed device reaches a maximum conversion efficiency value of , corresponding to an effective nonlinear susceptibility of pm/V. Note that the obtained values superior to previous reports by one to three orders of magnitude. This paper offers significant implications for understanding efficient nonlinear metasurfaces with high SHG conversion efficiency and effective non-linear susceptibility. The designed device has vast potential for applications across various fields and promises to contribute significantly to nonlinear optics.

Abstract:The nonlinear properties of a metamaterial sample composed of double-layer metallic patterns and voltage controllable diodes are experimentally investigated. Second harmonics and spectrum modulations are clearly observed in a wide band of microwave frequencies, showing that this kind of metamaterial is not only tunable by low DC bias voltage, but also behaves strong nonlinear property under a small power incidence. These properties are difficult to be found in normal, naturally occurring materials.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a coherent nonlinear phenomenon that plays an important role in laser color conversion. Lithium niobate (LN), which features both a large band gap and outstanding second-order nonlinearities, acts as an important optical material for nonlinear frequency conversion covering a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Here we experimentally demonstrate LN metasurfaces with controllable SHG properties. Distinct enhancements for the SHG efficiency are observed at Mie-resonances. And by changing the geometric parameters thus the resonances of the metasurfaces, we manage to selectively boost the SHG efficiency at different wavelengths. Our results would pave a way for developing with high flexibility the novel compact nonlinear light sources for applications, such as biosensing and optical communications.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical phenomena in nanostructured materials have been challenging our perceptions of nonlinear optical processes that have been explored since the invention of lasers. For example, the ability to control optical field confinement, enhancement, and scattering almost independently allows nonlinear frequency conversion efficiencies to be enhanced by many orders of magnitude compared to bulk materials. Also, the subwavelength length scale renders phase matching issues irrelevant. Compared with plasmonic nanostructures, dielectric resonator metamaterials show great promise for enhanced nonlinear optical processes due to their larger mode volumes. Here, we present, for the first time, resonantly enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) using gallium arsenide (GaAs) based dielectric metasurfaces. Using arrays of cylindrical resonators we observe SHG enhancement factors as large as 104 relative to unpatterned GaAs. At the magnetic dipole resonance, we measure an absolute nonlinear conversion efficiency of similar to 2 X 10(-5) with similar to 3.4 GW/cm(2) pump intensity. The polarization properties of the SHG reveal that both bulk and surface nonlinearities play important roles in the observed nonlinear process.
Tunable Second Harmonic Generation with Large Enhancement in A Nonlocal All‐Dielectric Metasurface Over A Broad Spectral Range

Abstract:In this work enhanced and spectrally tunable second‐harmonic generations (SHG) are reported by harnessing the quasi‐guided modes (QGM) in a period‐doubling nonlocal metasurface built on the lithium niobate film. The high robustness of the QGM Q factors at different wavevectors makes it possible to achieve such a tunability using a single metasuface structure. Recently, all‐dielectric metasurfaces are profoundly exploited to enhance light‐matter interactions, resulting from the high quality‐factor (Q‐factor) optical resonances that based on novel concepts such as the bound states in the continuum (BIC). Unfortunately, BIC operates at a fixed resonance wavelength and a fixed wavevector for a specific structure. Here, the experimental demonstration of a dielectric nonlocal metasurface capable of robustly maintaining high‐Q resonances is reported, over a broad spectral range, where the specific wavelength is selected by controlling the incident angle. This is enabled by steering infinite‐Q guided modes (GMs) in subwavelength lattices into quasi‐GMs (QGMs), which are accessible by external radiations while retaining the same dispersion as the GMs. Such invaluable characteristics are achieved by harnessing the period‐doubling perturbation, implemented in a nonlocal metasurface structure on top of a lithium niobate (LN) film. Furthermore, spectrally tunable second‐harmonic generations are demonstrated in this structure with an enhancement factor of ≈1200 compare to that of a bare LN film of the same thickness over a large bandwidth. These results suggest that the QGMs supported by all‐dielectric nonlocal metasurfaces provide an excellent platform for enhancing light‐matter interactions with additional desired functionalities of spectral tunability and random selection of the operation wavelength.

Abstract:Strong second-harmonic generation has recently been experimentally observed from metamaterials consisting of periodic arrays of metal split ring resonators with an effective negative magnetic permeability [Science, 313, 502 (2006)]. To explore the underlying physical mechanism, a classical model derived from microscopic theory is employed here. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a classical Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an external electromagnetic field is described by the cold-plasma wave equations. Through numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that the microscopic theory includes the dominant physical mechanisms bothqualitatively and quantitatively.
