Abstract:Perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs), as a promising material to achieve pure blue emission, have attracted significant attention in high gamut displays. However, the high surface-to-volume ratio and the loosely connected ligands of NPLs make them susceptible to degradation from light, air and heat. As a result, NPLs often exhibit low photoluminescence (PL) intensity and instability. Here, an Mn-ligand passivation strategy is proposed, in which Mn-doped DMAPbBr3 is used as a precursor. During the perovskite transformation, Mn2+ ions migrate from the lattice of DMAPbBr3 to the surface of CsPbBr3 NPLs, which have strong binding forces with ligands. The final products Mn-CsPbBr3 (M-CPB) NPLs are then acquired by the ligand-induced ripening growth process, which not only exhibit pure blue emission with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM), but also possess near-unity PL quantum yields (QYs). Besides, M-CPB NPLs show excellent stability due to the strong Mn-ligand passivation layer. Based on the new growth mechanism discovery, the reaction time can be shortened to several minutes by heating. The innovative growth model proposed in this work will provide a paradigm for designing and optimizing future synthesis schemes.

Abstract:Mn-doped perovskites have been extensively studied in optics, magnetism, and electronics due to their orange emission. However, successful Mn doping required a high Mn/Pb feed ratio. In this paper, Mn-doped CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) with bright orange emission were prepared by a two-step slow thermal injection synthesis. The slow injection of precursors effectively slow-down the crystal growth kinetic process and controls the growth of undoped CsPbBr3 NPLs. This process also significantly improves Mn doping efficiency. Mn doping induced the generation of numerous precursor clusters during the growth of CsPbBr3 NPLs, and the formation of these clusters was crucial for enhancing the doping efficiency. The maximum amount of Mn precursor in CsPb0.83Mn0.17Br3 was 50% of Pb precursors. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of CsPb0.94Mn0.06Br3 NPLs reached up to 80.6%, which was 3.1 times of that of CsPbBr3 NPLs. The PL properties of Mn-doped CsPbBr3 NPLs were significantly enhanced compared with pure CsPbBr3 NPLs. The growth process and luminescence mechanism of Mn-doped CsPbBr3 NPLs were discussed. High PLQYs and efficient Mn doping supplied an ideal approach for the preparation of various CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) NCs for commercial applications.

Abstract:Doping Mn 2+ ions into cesium lead halide CsPbX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) has been proven to be an effective strategy to reduce the Pb 2+ content. However, excessive Mn 2+ ions may form the Mn–Mn dimers in PNCs, leading to concentration quenching effects and low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Herein, secondary metal ions (Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ ) were introduced to substitute Pb 2+ ions as co-doped (Mn, M):CsPbCl 3 PNCs (M = Ni, Cu, Zn), which were prepared by a facile method under ambient conditions, aiming for positively passivating the surface defects and improving the Mn 2+ emission. Also, to protect the co-doped (Mn, M):CsPbCl 3 PNCs from moisture damage, we performed silica encapsulation, which further passivated surface defects due to the effective hydrolysis of silane. The evolution of optical properties and stabilities of three series of (Mn, M):CsPbCl 3 PNCs was compared. The PLQYs of co-doped (Mn, M):CsPbCl 3 PNCs were larger than those of single-doped Mn: CsPbCl 3 PNCs, especially for (Mn, Ni):CsPbCl 3 and (Mn, Cu):CsPbCl 3 , which can reach nearly 30%. The PLQYs of (Mn, Ni):CsPbCl 3 and (Mn, Zn):CsPbCl 3 PNCs decreased dramatically during the encapsulation process, while the PLQY values of (Mn, Cu):CsPbCl 3 remained 30% even after the same treatment process. Consequently, the prototypes of white light-emitting devices (WLEDs) were successfully fabricated based on orange-red (Mn, Ni):CsPbCl 3 @SiO 2 and (Mn, Zn):CsPbCl 3 @SiO 2 composites. The synergetic effects of co-doping transition metal ions and silica-shell coating on improving optical properties and stabilities were investigated. It has potential for a wide range of applications in the field of solid-state light emission.

Abstract:Two-dimensional CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) with narrow emission line width are one of the most promising materials for lighting and display applications. Nevertheless, it has been difficult to successfully synthesize deep- blue emitting CsPbBr3 NPLs with long-term stability and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), which prevents their widespread application in the field of lighting. The use of ligands engineering strategy has demonstrated an increase in the PLQY and stability. Herein, a method employing in situ formation of modified zwitterionic surface ligands is proposed to successfully synthesize high-quality CsPbBr3 NPLs. Zwitterionic passivation strategy can produce deep blue emission of CsPbBr3 NPLs at similar to 461 nm, achieving a near-unity quantum yield and excellent stability for long-term storage at room-temperature, heat treatment, and ultraviolet irradiation. This enhancement can be attributed to the strong chelation between the modified zwitterions and the surface of CsPbBr3 NPLs, which can effectively immobilize surface halide ions and passivate surface defects. This work provides a flexible way to achieve high PLQY and improve the stability issues in perovskite NPLs.

Abstract:Quantum-confined CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) with very narrow emission line width are promising candidates for color-saturated blue emitters, but their electroluminescence performance is limited by inferior carrier transport, mostly induced by the surface bulky organic ligands. Many efforts routinely rely on replacing long ligands with short counterparts, resulting in a significant increase in the NPL’s thickness and thus making it difficult to obtain the desired emission color. Herein, we realize short-ligand (butylamine and myristic acid)-capped CsPbBr3 NPLs with almost unaltered emission characteristics by introducing ammonium bromide (NH4Br) to effectively control the crystal growth kinetics and passivate the surface defects. Further, with short conjugation ligand–phenethylammonium bromide (PEABr) postsynthetic treatment, we can dramatically enhance their electrical performance and luminous efficiency (film photoluminescence quantum yields over 80%). With these benefits, a remarkable electroluminescence efficiency of 2% (at 463 nm) has been achieved, which is a record for blue perovskite NPL-based light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently attracted intense interest as promising luminophores for optoelectronic devices. However, their extensive applications are still hampered by a high-cost synthesis method and the poor stability and low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of NCs. To address these issues, herein, a fast, room-temperature method is adopted to prepare CsPbBr3 NCs with the use of green synthetic solvents. More importantly, we explore an efficient postsynthetic dual-surface-passivation strategy of CsPbBr3 NCs with 1,3-adamantanedicarboxylic acid (ADA) and ZnBr2 ligands, which exhibits near-unity PLQY and ultra-high stability. The theoretical results show that such a remarkable performance stems from efficient passivation of the massive surface defects of CsPbBr3 with ADA and ZnBr2, suppressing the formation of surface nonradiative recombination centers. Besides, we fabricated white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) based on essentially trap-free CsPbBr3 NCs. The optimal device exhibits a luminous efficiency of up to 68.7 lm W-1 and wide color gamut of 119% of the NTSC standard.

Abstract:CsPbI3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) are considered potential candidates for orange-red light-emitting materials due to their high exciton binding energy and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM). However, the relatively low formation energy of CsPbI3 NPLs leads to rapid growth rates, posing a challenge for the controlled synthesis of high-quality CsPbI3 NPLs. Herein, we report the synthesis of high-quality CsPbI3 NPLs emitting orange-red light using a one-pot method under mild reaction conditions. The protonation of oleylamine (OAm) by introducing HI and the strong interaction between the octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) ligand and Pb2+ facilitate the anisotropic growth of CsPbI3 NPLs and enable precise control over the numbers of NPL layers, achieving the desired orange-red light emission. The resulting CsPbI3 NPLs exhibited a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 90%, a narrow FWHM of only 25 nm, and excellent stability at room temperature, under ultraviolet-visible light and in aqueous environments. The comprehensive study of the formation process of CsPbI3 NPLs enriches our understanding of the growth mechanism and provides a synthetic route for producing high-quality CsPbI3 NPLs.

Abstract:All-inorganic blue-emissive CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) are promising for optoelectronic applications due to excellent optical properties, but their applicability is seriously restricted by a low photoluminescence efficiency and poor stability. Here, we develop a postsynthetic surface-mediated engineering strategy to prepare high-quality blue CsPbBr3 NPLs at room temperature by using strongly bound polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS). PSS efficiently passivates the surface trap sites of NPLs via strong coordination bonds, thereby achieving high-efficiency exciton recombination and enhancing photostability. The optimized PSS-NPLs reveal intense blue emission with a central wavelength of similar to 466 nm and a high photoluminescence quantum yield of similar to 83.2%, indicating a substantial improvement from similar to 48.3% of pristine NPLs. Simultaneously, the PSS-treated NPLs exhibit significantly enhanced stability in comparison with pristine NPLs during UV exposure and thermal treatment. Finally, we achieve efficient blue NPL-LEDs (peaked at similar to 468 nm) using a PSS-NPL-polymer composite film, corresponding to CIE color coordinates of (0.124, 0.067), which closely approach to the Rec. 2020 blue standard. Hence, our work offers a facile strategy for fabricating high-performance perovskite NPLs and promotes their potential applications in blue-emitting optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) CsPbBr 3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) have attracted great attention as one of promising semiconductor nanomaterials due to their large exciton binding energy and narrow emission spectra. However, the labile ionic and weakly bound surfaces of deep -blue emitting CsPbBr 3 NPLs with wide bandgap result in their colloidal instability, thus degrading their optical properties. It is challenging to obtain deep -blue emitting CsPbBr 3 NPLs with excellent optical properties. In this study, high -quality blue -emitting CsPbBr 3 NPLs with tunable thickness were prepared adopting the DBSA-mediated confinement effect based on the hot -injection method. Thanks to the coordination interaction of - SO 3 - of DBSA ligand and the Pb 2+ on the surface of the CsPbBr 3 NPLs, as well as the effective passivation of Br vacancy defects on the surface of NPLs by OAm-Br, the obtained pure -blue CsPbBr 3 NPLs and deep -blue CsPbBr 3 NPLs show high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 92 % and 81.2 %, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest PLQY recorded for deep -blue emitting CsPbBr 3 NPLs with two monolayers [PbBr 6 ] 4- octahedra. Furthermore, the agglomeration of CsPbBr 3 NPLs due to ligand loss induced by moisture, oxygen, and irradiation was also suppressed by the dual passivation effect of DBSA and OAm-Br. Our work provided a new approach to developing high-performance and stable deep -blue emitting CsPbBr 3 perovskite nanoplatelets.

Specifically, the PL intensity of ZnBr2-treated CsPbBr3 NPLs dispersion shows a little decrease after storage at ambient conditions for 50 days or after mixing with ethanol for 160 h. Under challenging conditions including exposure to ultraviolet light for 300 h or heating at 70 degrees C for 30 min, their PLQY decreases only slightly.
Stable Luminous Nanocomposites of Confined Mn2+-Doped Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals in Mesoporous Silica Nanospheres As Orange Fluorophores

Abstract:Creating highly stable inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX3, where X = Cl, Br, and I) with excellent optical performance is challenging because their optical properties depend on their ionic structure and its inherent defects. Here, we present a facile and effective synthesis using a nanoconfinement strategy to grow Mn2+-doped CsPbCl3 nanocrystals embedded in dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs). The resulting nanocomposite is abbreviated as Cs(Pb x/Mn1- x)Cl3@MSNs and can serve as the orange emitter for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). The MSN matrix was prepared via a templated sol-gel technique as monodispersed center-radial dendritic porous particles, with a diamater of ∼105 nm and an inner pore size of ∼13 nm. The MSN was then utilized as the matrix to initiate the growth of Mn-doped perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). The NCs in the resulting composite have an average diameter of 8 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield of >30%. In addition, the optical properties of the Cs(Pb x/Mn1- x)Cl3@MSNs can be tuned by varying the Mn2+ doping level. The resulting composites presented a significantly improved resistance to ultraviolet (UV) light, temperature, and moisture compared to that of bare Cs(Pb0.72/Mn0.28)Cl3. Finally, we fabricated down-converting WLEDs by using Cs(Pb x/Mn1- x)Cl3@MSNs as the orange-emitting phosphor deposited onto UV-emitting chips, demonstrating their promising applications in solid-state lighting. This work provides a valuable approach to fabricating stable orange luminophores as replacements for traditional emitters in light-emitting diode devices.

Abstract:Quantum-confined CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) are extremely promising for use in low-cost blue light-emitting diodes, but their tendency to coalesce in both solution and film form, particularly under operating device conditions with injected charge-carriers, is hindering their adoption. We show that employing a short hexyl-phosphonate ligand (C6H15O3P) in a heat-up colloidal approach for pure, blue-emitting quantum-confined CsPbBr3 NPLs significantly suppresses these coalescence phenomena compared to particles capped with the typical oleyammonium ligands. The phosphonate-passivated NPL thin films exhibit photoluminescence quantum yields of ∼40% at 450 nm with exceptional ambient and thermal stability. The color purity is preserved even under continuous photoexcitation of carriers equivalent to LED current densities of ∼3.5 A/cm2. 13C, 133Cs, and 31P solid-state MAS NMR reveal the presence of phosphonate on the surface. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the enhanced stability is due to the stronger binding affinity of the phosphonate ligand compared to the ammonium ligand.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel chelating strategy that utilizes metal manganese ions and multidentate ligands, markedly improving the structural stability and emission efficiency of CsPbBr3 NPLs. The resultant NPLs films demonstrate an impressive PLQY of 66%, showcasing remarkable air stability with consistent blue emission for up to five days. Quantum‐confined perovskite CsPbBr3 Nanoplatelets (NPLs) have recently emerged as promising blue‐emitting materials for perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Yet, their susceptibility to optical instability in solid films under ambient conditions poses a significant hindrance. This study introduces a novel chelating strategy that utilizes metal manganese ions and multidentate ligands, markedly improving the structural stability, and emission efficiency of NPLs. The approach involves adding Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to the perovskite precursor solution, which allows for strong coordination to surface [PbBr6]4− octahedrons via its multiple chelation sites. Ensuing metal manganese ion integration during the purification phase addresses Pb2+ and Br− site vacancies, culminating in near‐perfect octahedral structures with significantly fewer vacancies. These metal manganese ions are then further immobilized on the NPLs surface by the chelating effect of unbound DTPA functional groups. The resultant CsPbBr3 NPLs films demonstrate an impressive PLQY of 66%, showcasing remarkable air stability with consistent blue emission for up to 5 days. The CsPbBr3 NPLs‐based PeLEDs show electroluminescence at 460 nm with a current efficiency of 1.07 cd A−1 and a maximum luminance of 220 cd m−2. The proposed chelating strategy positions perovskite NPLs as an extremely promising prospect in future applications of high‐definition displays and high‐quality lighting.

Abstract:Solid-state color-saturated blue emitters are an essential part of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and high-definition displays, and lead halide perovskite nanomaterials are one such type of emitter. Using a multidentate ligand polyethylenimine (PEI), we developed a soft template method to stabilize and enhance solid-state blue photoluminescence of CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets, whose lateral size became significantly increased without changing the thickness. From the spectral analysis, the PEI soft template prevented the coalescence of the CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets and decreased the density of their trap states, leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 85% for their color-saturated blue emission in solution and 40% in films. LEDs based on CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets emit blue light at 465 nm with a high brightness of 631 cd m–2.

Abstract:All-inorganic cesium lead-halide perovskite nano-crystals have emerged as attractive optoelectronic nanomaterials owing to their stabilities and highly efficient photoluminescence. Herein we report a new type of highly luminescent perovskite-related CsPb2Br5 nanoplatelets synthesized by a facile precipitation reaction. The layered crystal structure of CsPb2Br5 promoted an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) crystal growth during the precipitation process, thus enabling the large-scale synthesis of CsPb2Br5 nanoplatelets. Fast anion exchange has also been demonstrated in as-synthesized CsPb2Br5 nanoplatelets to extend their photoluminescence spectra to the entire visible spectral region. The large-scale synthesis and optical tunability of CsPb2Br5 nanoplatelets will be advantageous in future applications of optoelectronic devices.
Stable and multicolor solid-state luminescence of Mn doped CsPb(Cl/Br)3 perovskite quantum dots and its application in light-emitting diodes

Abstract:Mn2+ doping has been developed to modulate the photoluminescence (PL) of CsPbCl3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs). However, the doped Mn2+ may be expelled from the PQDs host with the long-term storing, resulting in inferior stability. Herein, CsPbCl3 PQDs doped with different concentrations of Mn2+ (Mn:CsPbCl3) are prepared by a hot injection method. Our photostability tests reveal that when the doping concentration is <25%, or 40%- 50%, the Mn2+ doped PQDs are intrinsically stable. Anion exchange reactions are conducted between the stable CsPb0.796Mn0.204Cl3 and CsPbBr3 PQDs. Fluorescence color gamut of the resulting Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br)3 PQDs almost covers the entire visible spectrum except for the deep red color. Benefiting from the intrinsic stability and wide color gamut, multicolor solid-state luminescence are acquired by incorporating the Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br)3 PQDs in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrices, which are used as color converters for constructing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different colors.

Abstract:Currently, lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) have attracted great attention due to their spectacular photophysical properties. However, the toxicity of Pb2+ heavy metal ions in CsPbX3 PeQDs limits their practical applications. Herein, a facile post-treatment doping method is proposed, which enables the preparation of highly luminescent low-toxic CsPbX3:Mn2+ PeQDs from nonluminescent Cs4PbX6 PeQDs at water interface. The monodispersed CsPbX3:Mn2+ PeQDs exhibit excellent photophysical properties, including high photoluminescence quantum yield up to 87%. The reaction process and doping mechanism are deeply explored through in-situ monitoring. By simply adjusting the halide composition of the original Cs4PbX6 PeQDs or Mn doping concentration, a series of CsPbX3:Mn2+ PeQDs with adjustable emission could be obtained. Further, the CsPbX3:Mn2+ Q-LED was fabricated and exhibited excellent orange light with the color coordinates of (0.564, 0.399), correlated color temperature (CCT) of 1,918 K, and luminous efficiency (LE) of 24 lm/W, which illustrate the great promise in light emitting diode (LED) applications. This work not only provides a facile method for the preparation of highly luminescent low-toxic CsPbX3:Mn2+ PeQDs, but also provides insights into the mechanism of doping process.
