Abstract:Effects of N fertilization on soil respiration components. Black and red numbers represent N180 and N360 treatment, respectively. (1) To investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization on soil respiration (Rs) and its components (heterotrophic (Rh) and autotrophic (Ra) respiration), a field experiment under three N fertilization rates (0, 180 and 360 kg N ha−1, respectively) with two varieties of wheat, i.e., Changhan No. 58 (CH) and Zhengmai No. 9023 (ZM), was conducted over 6 growing seasons (October 2012 to June 2018). (2) Both the Rh and Ra rates contributed to the variation in the seasonal Rs rate, and the positive effects of N180 on the Rs rate were largely dependent on the increase in the Ra rate. The growing season C emission through Rs exhibited a relatively faster increase under N180 because of the increasing C emission through Rh along with an increasing duration of the experiment. The Rs and Rh rates were positively correlated with soil temperature (ST) and air temperature but negatively correlated with soil moisture, whereas C emission through Rs and Rh was significantly positively correlated with plant biomass and mean air temperature but negatively correlated with precipitation.
