Abstract:We present a new observation of photorefractive (PR) effects in bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystal (LC) materials, where two kinds of optical-induced gratings are demonstrated and compared in pure and surface-doped BCN systems. The experimental results showed that these two kinds of gratings exhibit distinctive different polarization-dependent and angular-dependent behaviors, respectively. Furthermore, we supplied the pure and surface-doped rodlike LC systems for comparison, which revealed that V shape molecular structure of BCN can produce charge carrier more efficiently than rodlike molecular structure does. Thus BCN materials can offer an exciting potential for optical information processing.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures are of considerable interest for the next generation nanoelectronics because of their unique interlayer coupling and optoelectronic properties. Here, we report a modified Langmuir-Blodgett method to organize two-dimensional molecular charge transfer crystals into arbitrarily and vertically stacked heterostructures, consisting of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF)/C60 and poly(3-dodecylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3DDT)/C60 nanosheets. A strong and anisotropic interfacial coupling between the charge transfer pairs is demonstrated. The van der Waals heterostructures exhibit pressure dependent sensitivity with a high piezoresistance coefficient of -4.4 × 10-6 Pa-1, and conductance and capacitance tunable by external stimuli (ferroelectric field and magnetic field). Density functional theory calculations confirm charge transfer between the n-orbitals of the S atoms in BEDT-TTF of the BEDT-TTF/C60 layer and the π* orbitals of C atoms in C60 of the P3DDT/C60 layer contribute to the inter-complex CT. The two-dimensional molecular van der Waals heterostructures with tunable optical-electronic-magnetic coupling properties are promising for flexible electronic applications.Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures are of interest due to their unique interlayer coupling and optoelectronic properties. Here authors develop a Langmuir-Blodgett method to organize charge transfer molecular heterostructures with externally tunable conductance and capacitance and broadband photoresponse.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image

Abstract:A surface electromagnetic wave called the Dyakonov-Tamm wave has been theoretically predicted to exist at the interface of two dielectric materials at least one of which is both anisotropic and periodically nonhomogeneous. For experimental confirmation, a prism-coupled configuration was used to excite the Dyakonov-Tamm wave guided by the interface of a dense thin film of magnesium fluoride and a chiral sculptured thin film of zinc selenide. The excitation was indicated by a reflection dip (with respect to the angle of incidence in the prism-coupled configuration) that is independent of the polarization state of the incident light as well as the thicknesses of both partnering materials beyond some thresholds. Applications to optical sensing and long-range on-chip communication are expected.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are of technological interest as they allow for optical effects which can be electrically controlled. In this paper we present an electro-optical device consisting of nematic liquid crystals addressed by an electrode structure consisting of thin films of polymer wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes (nanohybrids). Thin films of nanohybrids display excellent optical transmission and electrical conduction properties. Due to the randomly organised nanohybrids these composite films produce interesting director profile arrangements within the liquid crystal layers. As a result, enhanced scattering of laser and white light was observed from these liquid crystal cells which bend themselves as electrically controllable optical diffusers and beam shapers.

Abstract:A photo-chromic liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) is a smart material for large light-activated variation or bending to transfer luminous energy into mechanical energy. We study the light induced behavior by modeling planar and homeotropic nematic network polymer plates. We effectively illustrate some reported experimental outcomes and theoretically predict some possible bending patterns. This paper constructs an understanding between the bending behaviors and interactions among the alignments, aspect ratios and boundary conditions, etc. Our work provides information on optimizing light induced bending in the process of micro-opto-mechanical system (MOMS) design.

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the Dyakonov surface wave mode at visible frequency in a hyperbolic metasurface. The extremely strong anisotropy of the hyperbolic metasurface enables two Dyakonov surface waves on the two surfaces of the hyperbolic metasurface. Strong coupling between the two surface waves forms a Dyakonov type surface wave mode, which is highly directional and lossless, and has significant applications in two-dimensional photonic circuits and devices.

Abstract:Prism coupling techniques have been used to excite optical modes in a thin nematic liquid crystal with finite surface tilt in order to study the voltage dependent director profile. The surface tilts are opposite in character and it is found that at zero applied volts the stable configuration is the substantially horizontal state. On applying the field this state is broken, probably transforming to the twisted vertical state. By modelling all the data obtained, the detailed behaviour of the director profile has been fully characterized yielding much information, including the change of surface tilt with applied voltage. For the nematic liquid crystal E7, this gives a voltage induced surface tilt of approximately 0.67-degrees V-1 for a 5.65 mum thick cell. Also using a boundary layer model, it has been possible to analyse the free energy in the cell and hence show that the observed twisted vertical state is the expected stable state under the field applied.

Abstract:Optical excitation of a series of fully leaky guided modes has been used to explore the director distortion of a hybrid-aligned nematic liquid crystal with a negative dielectric anisotropy (Merck-BDH, MLC 6608) under application of an ac electric field. Hybrid alignment is realized by the use of a lecithin film on the top glass plate and rubbed polyimide on the bottom plate, both plates having indium–tin–oxide coatings. Continuum theory is used to model the director profile through the cell. Fitting the fully leaky guided mode data both in transmission and reflection using optical multilayer theory together with continuum modeling gives the director profile both with and without applied fields. From this fitting the changes in the surface tilt angle and its gradient are obtained. Using this information the polar anchoring coefficient of the homeotropic surface Wθ is deduced. At 23.1 °C we find Wθ=(4.6±0.2)×10−4 J m−2.

Abstract:Topological phononic crystals (PCs) have attracted increasing attention owing to their elastic wave topological transmission with high robustness, backscattering suppression, and defect immunity. However, the effective regulation of the topological interface state of elastic waves in multi-field environments remains a challenge, particularly in the magneto-mechanical-thermal coupling field. In this study, a magnetostrictive PC beam composed of Terfenol-D and aluminum rods was designed to dynamically manipulate the topological interface state of longitudinal waves when the system was subjected to magnetic, mechanical, and thermal loadings. First, the Zak phase transition of the band gap was induced by simply controlling the magnetic field distribution of a unit cell based on the nonlinear magneto-mechanical-thermal coupling constitutive characteristics of magnetostrictive materials. The frequency of the Zak point was also significantly affected by pre-stress and temperature. Subsequently, the controllable topological interface state of the longitudinal wave was successfully observed at the interface of magnetostrictive PC beams in a multi-field environment without altering the structure. The results showed that the frequency and location of the topological interface state could be dynamically tuned by magnetic, stress, and thermal loadings. The robustness of the topological interface state was also investigated. Finally, the magneto-mechanical-thermal coupling tunability of longitudinal-wave topological transport was experimentally verified for the proposed magnetostrictive PC systems. This study provides an effective method for the active modulation of elastic wave topological transmission and the development of novel tunable topological devices.

Abstract:Significance The devices of the portable computing revolution are being made possible by nematic liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. The optical changes viewed in a dynamic LCD image are based on reorienting molecules by coupling electronically generated electric fields to molecular dielectric anisotropy. This takes place in appropriate fluid electro-optic structures stabilized by nonpolar orientational coupling of molecules to surfaces. The recent observation of ferroelectric nematics having spontaneous macroscopic electric polarization density has introduced a much stronger polar coupling of electric field to molecular reorientation in nematics. This development opens opportunities for advanced electro-optics, but these will require polar control of molecular orientation by surfaces. The generation of polar-structured surfaces and their coupling to nematic polarity is demonstrated in this paper.

Abstract:Alternating current (ac) electric-field-induced microstructures and electrohydrodynamic convection properties were studied for a guest-host liquid crystal (LC) system. The LC (MBBA) was doped with a newly synthesized azo-dye and filled in a LC cell. When the applied ac electric-field voltage was fixed at 13.5 V (Vrms), microstructures in the LC cell varied with the frequency (f) of the electric field. The probed He-Ne laser light displayed a hexagonal diffracted pattern when f=4.3 Hz, a square symmetry pattern when f=17.38 Hz, and a new hexagonal symmetry pattern when f=34.07 Hz. The first-order diffraction intensities along the x-axis direction (I1−x(t)) and y-axis direction (I1−y(t)) showed different time evolution tendency. At the same time, the phase shift (φ) between I1−x(t) and second-order diffraction intensity I2−x(t) was found to be dependent on the frequency.

Abstract:Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Abstract:We report on the effect of the frequency of a non-biased sinusoidal alternating (AC) electric field on the optical non-linear response of 60 mu m-thick homeotropic C-60-doped nematic liquid crystals by using a two-beam coupling experiment. Experimental results indicate that the liquid crystal sample has two intrinsic frequencies of similar to 0.05 Hz and similar to 10 Hz. Below 0.05 Hz the energy transference is unstable, the first-order diffraction flashes in phase with the external AC electric field and its minimal intensity is almost zero. When the frequency is larger than similar to 10 Hz, stable asymmetric energy transference, as that achieved under an external DC electric field, is obtained. In the regions between the above two frequencies, a stable asymmetric energy transference exists; at the same time, the transmitted intensities of the two writing beams are modulated by the external AC field and follow its variations.

Abstract:The transmission properties of liquid surface waves through a biconvex array of rigid cylinders, arranged in a two-dimensional periodic lattice, are studied experimentally and numerically. Both experimental and numerical results show that this biconvex array of rigid cylinders can act as a lens, which can focus plane liquid surface waves in a wide range of frequencies.

Abstract:A thermally controlled plasmonic substrate supporting surface plasmon polaritons in contact with a liquid crystal medium is presented. The platform offers a spectral tuning range ∼18.7 nm by controlling the refractive index of the liquid crystal medium within the nematic phase in a temperature range of 18 °C. The abrupt transition between nematic and isotropic phases also enables a spectral tuning as large as 12 nm with only ∼1 °C.
