Furthermore, this method allows us monitor the evolution of noise in real time, creating a valuable diagnostic tool. Finally, we observe that sources of noise in the experiment compound, meaning that the observed value of the mutual photon indistinguishability, which is the main imperfection in our study, is an effective value taking into account all sources of error in the experiment.

Abstract:Analyzing the properties of complex quantum systems is crucial for further development of quantum devices, yet this task is typically challenging and demanding with respect to required amount of measurements. A special attention to this problem appears within the context of characterizing outcomes of noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, which produce quantum states with specific properties so that it is expected to be hard to simulate such states using classical resources. In this work, we address the problem of characterization of a boson sampling device, which uses interference of input photons to produce samples of non-trivial probability distributions that at certain condition are hard to obtain classically. For realistic experimental conditions the problem is to probe multi-photon interference with a limited number of the measurement outcomes without collisions and repetitions. By constructing networks on the measurements outcomes, we demonstrate a possibility to discriminate between regimes of indistinguishable and distinguishable bosons by quantifying the structures of the corresponding networks. Based on this we propose a machine-learning-based protocol to benchmark a boson sampler with unknown scattering matrix. Notably, the protocol works in the most challenging regimes of having a very limited number of bitstrings without collisions and repetitions. As we expect, our framework can be directly applied for characterizing boson sampling devices that are currently available in experiments.

Abstract:In order to substantiate claims of quantum computational advantage, it is crucial to develop efficient methods for validating the experimental data. We propose a test of the correct functioning of a boson sampler with single-photon inputs that is based on how photons distribute among partitions of the output modes. Our method is versatile and encompasses previous validation tests based on bunching phenomena, marginal distributions, and even some suppression laws. We show via theoretical arguments and numerical simulations that binned-mode photon number distributions can be used in practical scenarios to efficiently distinguish ideal boson samplers from those affected by realistic imperfections, especially partial distinguishability of the photons.

Boson sampling is a promising platform for such a goal, however, the number of involved single photons was up to five so far, limiting these small-scale implementations to a proof-of-principle stage. Here, we develop solid-state sources of highly efficient, pure and indistinguishable single photons, and 3D integration of ultra-low-loss optical circuits. We perform an experiment with 20 single photons fed into a 60-mode interferometer, and, in its output, sample over Hilbert spaces with a size of $10^{14}$ $-$over ten orders of magnitude larger than all previous experiments. The results are validated against distinguishable samplers and uniform samplers with a confidence level of 99.9%.

Abstract:Boson-Sampling holds the potential to experimentally falsify the Extended Church Turing thesis. The computational hardness of Boson-Sampling, however, complicates the certification that an experimental device yields correct results in the regime in which it outmatches classical computers. To certify a boson-sampler, one needs to verify quantum predictions and rule out models that yield these predictions without true many-boson interference. We show that a semiclassical model for many-boson propagation reproduces coarse-grained observables that were proposed as witnesses of Boson-Sampling. A test based on Fourier matrices is demonstrated to falsify physically plausible alternatives to coherent many-boson propagation.

Abstract:A boson sampling device could efficiently sample from the output probability distribution of noninteracting bosons undergoing many-body interference. This problem is not only classically intractable, but its solution is also believed to be classically unverifiable. Hence, a major difficulty in experiment is to ensure a boson sampling device performs correctly. We present an experimental friendly scheme to extract useful and robust information from the quantum boson samplers based on coarse-grained measurements. The procedure can be applied to certify the equivalence of boson sampling devices while ruling out alternative fraudulent devices. We perform numerical simulations to demonstrate the feasibility of the method and consider the effects of realistic noise. Our approach is expected to be generally applicable to other many-body certification tasks beyond the boson sampling problem.

Abstract:A boson sampler implements a restricted model of quantum computing. It is defined by the ability to sample from the distribution resulting from the interference of identical bosons propagating according to programmable, non-interacting dynamics. Here, we demonstrate a new combination of tools for implementing boson sampling using ultracold atoms in a two-dimensional, tunnel-coupled optical lattice. These tools include fast and programmable preparation of large ensembles of nearly identical bosonic atoms ($99.5^{+0.5}_{-1.6}\;\%$ indistinguishability) by means of rearrangement with optical tweezers and high-fidelity optical cooling, propagation for variable evolution time in the lattice with low loss ($5.0(2)\;\%$, independent of evolution time), and high fidelity detection of the atom positions after their evolution (typically $99.8(1)\;\%$). With this system, we study specific instances of boson sampling involving up to $180$ atoms distributed among $\sim 1000$ sites in the lattice. Direct verification of a given boson sampling distribution is not feasible in this regime. Instead, we introduce and perform targeted tests to determine the indistinguishability of the prepared atoms, to characterize the applied family of single particle unitaries, and to observe expected bunching features due to interference for a large range of atom numbers. When extended to interacting systems, our work demonstrates the core capabilities required to directly assemble ground and excited states in simulations of various Hubbard models.

Abstract:Boson sampling is one of the main quantum computation models to demonstrate the quantum computational advantage. However, this aim may be hard to realize considering two main kinds of noises, which are photon distinguishability and photon loss. Inspired by the Bayesian validation extended to evaluate whether distinguishability is too high to demonstrate this advantage, the pattern recognition validation is extended for boson sampling, considering both distinguishability and loss. Based on clusters constructed with the K means++ method, where parameters are carefully adjusted to optimize the extended validation performances, the distribution of characteristic values is nearly monotonically changed with indistinguishability, especially when photons are close to be indistinguishable. However, this regulation may be suppressed by photon loss. The intrinsic data structure of output events is analyzed through calculating probability distributions and mean 2-norm distances of the sorted outputs. An approximation algorithm is also used to show the data structure changes with noises.

Abstract:Boson Sampling is the problem of sampling from the same distribution as indistinguishable single photons at the output of a linear optical interferometer. It is an example of a non-universal quantum computation which is believed to be feasible in the near term and cannot be simulated on a classical machine. Like all purported demonstrations of "quantum supremacy", this motivates optimizing classical simulation schemes for a realistic model of the problem, in this case Boson Sampling when the implementations experience lost or distinguishable photons. Although current simulation schemes for sufficiently imperfect boson sampling are classically efficient, in principle the polynomial runtime can be infeasibly large. In this work, we develop a scheme for classical simulation of Boson Sampling under uniform distinguishability and loss, based on the idea of sampling from distributions where at most k photons are indistinguishable. We show that asymptotically this scheme can provide a polynomial improvement in the runtime compared to classically simulating idealised Boson Sampling. More significantly, we show that in the regime considered experimentally relevant, our approach gives an substantial improvement in runtime over other classical simulation approaches.

Abstract:Boson sampling has emerged as an important tool to demonstrate the difference between quantum and classical computers and has attracted the interest of experimentalists and theoreticians. In this work we study Boson sampling from general, single-mode states using a scheme that can generate any such state by combining Gaussian states and photon number measurements. We derive a formula that can be used to calculate the output photon number probabilities of these states after they travel through a linear interferometer. This extends the Boson sampling protocol to the widest array of possible single-mode states and from this we show that the complexity scaling of all such states is similar and hence there is no complexity advantage of using complex input states over simpler ones.

Abstract: Boson sampling is a problem intractable for classical computers, but can be naturally solved on a specialized photonic quantum simulator which requires less resources than building a universal quantum computer. The biggest challenge to implement boson sampling with a large number of photons has been the lack of reliable single-photon sources. Here we demonstrate a scalable architecture of boson sampling using a solid-state single-photon source with simultaneously high efficiency, purity, and indistinguishability. The single photons are time-bin encoded and interfered in an electrically programmable loop-based network. We implement and validate boson sampling with input three and four single photons, and track the dynamical multi-photon evolution inside the circuit. With further refinement of the system efficiency, our approach may be feasible to be scaled up to >20-boson sampling to outperform classical computers, and thus provide experimental evidence against the Extended Church-Turing Thesis.
Photonic Simulation of Localization Phenomena Using Boson Sampling

Abstract:Quantum simulation in its current state faces experimental overhead in terms of physical space and cooling. We propose boson sampling as an alternative compact synthetic platform performing at room temperature. Identifying the capability of estimating matrix permanents, we explore the applicability of boson sampling for tackling the dynamics of quantum systems without having access to information about the full state vector. By mapping the time-evolution unitary of a Hamiltonian onto an interferometer via continuous-variable gate decompositions, we present proof-of-principle results of localization characteristics of a single particle. We study the dynamics of one-dimensional tight-binding systems in the clean and quasiperiodic-disordered limits to observe Bloch oscillations and dynamical localization, and the delocalization-to-localization phase transition in the Aubry- Andre-Harper model respectively. Our computational results obtained using boson sampling are in complete agreement with the dynamical and static results of non-interacting tight-binding systems obtained using conventional numerical calculations. Additionally, our study highlights the role of number of sampling measurements or shots for simulation accuracy.

Abstract:Boson-sampling has attracted much interest as a simplified approach to implementing a subset of optical quantum computing. Boson-sampling requires indistinguishable photons, but far fewer of them than universal optical quantum computing architectures. In reality, photons are never indistinguishable, and exhibit a rich spectral structure. Here we consider the operation of boson-sampling with photons of arbitrary spectral structure and relate the sampling statistics of the device to matrix permanents. This sheds light on the computational complexity of different regimes of the photons' spectral characteristics, and provides very general results for the operation of linear optics interferometers in the presence of partially distinguishable photons. Our results apply to both the cases of spectrally resolving and non-spectrally resolving detectors.

Abstract:Boson is one of the most basic types of particles and preserves the commutation relation. An efficient way to measure a bosonic system is important not only for simulating complex physics phenomena of bosons (such as nuclei) on a qubit based quantum computer, but for extracting classical information from a quantum simulator/computer that itself is built with bosons (such as a continuous variable quantum computer). Extending the recently proposed measurement schemes for qubits, such as shadow tomography and other local measurement schemes, here we study efficient measurement approaches for bosonic systems. We consider truncated qudit and continuous variable systems, corresponding to simulated bosons on a discrete quantum computer and an inherent boson system, respectively, and propose different measurement schemes with theoretical analyses of the variances for these two cases. We numerically test the schemes for measuring nuclei vibrations simulated using a discrete quantum computer and a continuous variable Gaussian state, and the simulation results show great improvement of the performance of the proposed method compared to conventional ones.
