Abstract:The influence caused by the position of the chlorine atom on end groups of two non-fullerene acceptors (ITIC-2Cl-δ and ITIC-2Cl-γ) was intensely investigated. The single-crystal structures show that ITIC-2Cl-γ has a better molecular planarity and closer π-π interaction distance. More importantly, a 3D rectangle-like interpenetrating network is formed in ITIC-2Cl-γ and is beneficial to rapid charge transfer along multiple directions, whereas only a linear stacked structure could be observed in ITIC-2Cl-δ. The two acceptor-based solar cells show power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 11%, higher than that of the ITIC-2Cl-m-based device (10.85%). An excellent PCE of 13.03% is obtained by the ITIC-2Cl-γ-based device. In addition, the ITIC-2Cl-γ-based device also shows the best device stability. This study indicates that chlorine positioning has a great impact on the acceptors; more importantly, the 3D network structure may be a promising strategy for non-fullerene acceptors to improve the PCE and stability of organic solar cells.

Abstract:The role of electronic structure and thin film morphology is investigated in determining charge transfer and electron coupling due to orbital interactions in two isomeric non-fullerene acceptors with the structure of acceptor-donoracceptor. Differences are found in the distribution of electron density of the highest occupied molecular and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, whose bonding interactions result in improved intermolecular interactions and hence, molecular stacking. When combined with a large band gap polymer donor, solution-processed organic photovoltaic cells are demonstrated with power conversion efficiencies as high as 10.5 +/- 0.4%, and with absorption extending to wavelengths of 800 nm. Due to strong internal organization driven by the planar molecular structure and strong intermolecular interactions, no post-deposition processing such as solvent vapor or thermal annealing is required. To our knowledge, these are the highest efficiencies for as-cast solution-based devices employing non-fullerene acceptors.

Abstract:Recently, benefiting from the merits of small-molecule acceptors (NFAs), polymer solar cells (PSCs) have achieved tremendous advances. From the perspective of the structural characteristics of the π-conjugated acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type of organic molecules, the backbone's planarity and the terminal groups and their substituents have strong influences on the performances of the constructed NFAs. Through enlarging the dihedral angle of the conjugated main chain of NFAs, a certain degree of enhancement of photovoltaic parameters has been achieved. To further probe the influences of ending groups on the performances of nonplanar NFAs, we synthesized two new NFAs i-cc23 and i-cc34 with isomerized thiophene-fused ending groups and a twisted π-conjugated main chain. Compared to i-cc23 containing the 2-(6-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[b]thiophen-4-ylidene)malononitrile ending group, the acceptor i-cc34 containing 2-(6-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[c]thiophen-4-ylidene)malononitrile has a relatively higher molar extinction coefficient, bathochromic-shifted absorption spectrum, and deepened energy levels. When mixed with PBDB-T in solar cells, the i-cc23-based device achieved an excellent open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.10 V and a moderate power conversion efficiency of 7.34%. Although the VOC of the i-cc34-related device was decreased to 0.96 V, the short-circuit current density and fill factor were improved, giving rise to an enhanced efficiency of 9.51%. Apart from the distinct photovoltaic performances, the two isomer-based devices exhibit a high radiative efficiency of 8 × 10-4, leading to a very small nonradiative loss of 0.19 V. Our results emphasize the importance of the isomerized thiophene-fused ending groups on the performances of nonplanar NFA-based PSCs.

Abstract:Three small molecule acceptors (SMAs), named ZF, ZC and ZB, have been designed and synthesized for organic solar cells (OSCs) by introducing single F, Cl and Br atom on each terminal unit, respectively. The effects of different halogen substituent on molecular aggregation, photophysical and photovoltaic performance have been systematically studied. Owing to its strong electronegativity of halogens, all the acceptors with monohalogenated terminal units possess red-shifted absorption spectra and deeper frontier energy levels compared to the corresponding acceptor without halogen substituents reported in the literature. Among the SMAs, ZB with brominated terminal units was found to show the higher molar absorption coefficient (2.31 × 105 M−1 cm−1), more orderly face-on π-π stacking, higher electron mobility and more favorable morphology when blended with PM6. As a result, the PM6:ZB OSCs yielded a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 15.23% with a high short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 26.38 mA cm−2, while the corresponding ZF- and ZC-based devices showed the relatively inferior PCEs of 13.36% and 14.71%, respectively. These results demonstrated that the modulation of electron-withdrawing halogen substituents on terminal group provides a promising strategy to design and synthesize efficient SMAs for fabricating high-performance OSCs.

Abstract:To develop photovoltaic materials based on perylene diimide, two non-fullerene acceptors namely PCPD-F and PCPD-Cl are rationally designed and readily synthesized. By introducing the cyclopentadithiophene unit with the strong electron-donating ability, PCPD-F and PCPD-Cl exhibit strong and bathochromic absorption compared to other perylene diimide derivatives. Meanwhile, different halogens in PCPD-F and PCPD-Cl significantly affect the physicochemical properties and device performance. With the substitution of chlorine atom, PCPD-Cl shows relatively broad absorption and strong crystallinity. However, the chlorination makes PCPD-Cl less miscible with polymer donors, leading to the unfavorable morphology with large-scale phase separation in organic solar cells. Consequently, the device based on PCPD-F achieves the best power conversion efficiency of 9.03% by blending with the polymer donor PM6, which is among the high-performance organic solar cells based on perylene diimide. This work demonstrates it is crucial to meticulously select the substituted atom and position in the design of non-fullerene acceptors.

Abstract:It is widely recognized that subtle changes in the chemical structure of organic semiconductors can induce dramatic variations in their optoelectronic properties and device performance, especially for the nonfullerene small‐molecule acceptors (SMAs). For instance, halogenation of the end groups in the acceptor–donor–acceptor‐type SMAs is an effective strategy to modulate the properties of the end group and thus the entire SMA. While previous position modulations have focused on only one substituent, this study shows the development of three isomeric SMAs (BTP‐ClBr, BTP‐ClBr1, and BTP‐ClBr2) via manipulating the position of two halogen substituents (chlorine and bromine) on the terminal unit. BTP‐ClBr exhibits a blueshifted absorption, a shallower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level, and a weaker crystallization tendency relative to BTP‐ClBr1 and BTP‐ClBr2. A power conversion efficiency (16.82%) and an excellent fill factor (FF) (0.79) are realized in the optimal PM6:BTP‐ClBr organic solar cell device. The higher FF is consistent with the results of the characterization including a longer charge recombination lifetime, a faster photocurrent decay, a weaker bimolecular recombination, and a more favorable domain size for PM6:BTP‐ClBr, which all originate from a subtle change in the substitution sites that strongly influences the physicochemical properties of the SMA.

Abstract:To date, the fused-ring electron acceptors show the best photovoltaic performances, and the development of simple nonfullerene acceptors via intramolecular noncovalent interactions can reduce synthetic costs. In this work, four simple nonfullerene acceptors with an A-D-A'-D-A configuration, QCIC1, QCIC2, QCIC3, and QCIC4, are synthesized. They own the same conjugated backbone (A': quinoxaline; D: cyclopentadithiophene; A: dicyano-indanone) but different halogen atoms and alkyl side chains. Due to the chlorination on the end-groups and the most and/or longest branched alkyl side chains on the backbone, the blended film composed of QCIC3 and donor PBDB-T exhibits the strongest π-π stacking and the most suitable phase-separation domains among the four blended films. Therefore, the QCIC3 based organic solar cells yield the highest power conversion efficiency of 10.55%. This work provides a pathway to optimize the molecular arrangements and enhance the photovoltaic property of simple electron acceptors through subtle chemical modifications.

The Effect of End-Capping Groups in A-D-A Type Non-Fullerene Acceptors on Device Performance of Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:A series of novel wide bandgap small molecules (IFT-ECA, IFT-M, IFT-TH and IFT-IC) based on the A-D-A structure with indenofluorene core, thiophene bridge, and different electron-deficient end-capping groups, were synthesized and used as non-fullerene acceptors in organic solar cells. The influences of end-capping groups on the device performance were studied. The four materials exhibited different physical and chemical properties due to the variation of end-capping groups, which further affect the exciton dissociation, charge transport, morphology of the bulk-heterojunction films and device performance. Among them, IFT-IC-based device delivered the best power conversion efficiency of 7.16% due to proper nano-scale phase separation morphology and high electron mobility, while the devices based on the other acceptors achieved lower device performance (4.14% for IFT-TH, <1% for IFT-ECA and IFT-M). Our results indicate the importance of choosing suitable electron-withdrawing groups to construct high-performance non-fullerene acceptors based on A-D-A motif.

Abstract:Herein, asymmetric isomer effects are systematically explored by designing and synthesizing two benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BT)-fused nonacyclic electron acceptors. By changing from BP6T-4F to asymmetric ABP6T-4F, significantly enhanced dielectric constant and inhibited excessive molecular aggregation and unfavorable edge-on orientation could be achieved. The reduced exciton binding energy also facilitates a more efficient dissociation process in PM6:ABP6T-4F compared to PM6:BP6T-4F with the same energy offset. Moreover, the weaker crystallization behavior enables a significantly enhanced miscibility between PM6 and ABP6T-4F than that between PM6 and BP6T-4F, which leads to an optimized micromorphology with smooth surface, suitable domain size, and ordered π–π stacking. Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PM6:ABP6T-4F achieve a 15.8% power conversion efficiency (PCE), which is remarkably higher than that of PM6:BP6T-4F-based OSCs (6.4%). Furthermore, ternary devices are also fabricated considering good compatibility between ABP6T-4F and CH1007 to deliver a PCE over 17%. This study reveals the effectiveness and great potential of asymmetric isomerization strategy in regulating molecular properties, which will provide guidance for the future design of non-fullerene acceptors.

Abstract:In this work, we developed four porphyrin-based small molecular electron acceptors for non-fullerene organic solar cells, in which different side groups attached to the porphyrin core were selected in order to achieve optimized performance. The molecules contain porphyrin as the core, perylene bisimides as end groups, and the ethynyl unit as the linker. Four side groups, from 2,6-di(dodecyloxy)phenyl to (2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl, pentadecan-7-yl, and 3,5-di(dodecyloxy)phenyl unit, were applied into the electron acceptors. The new molecules exhibit broad absorption spectra from 300 to 900 nm and high molar extinction coefficients. The molecules as electron acceptors were applied into organic solar cells, showing increased power conversion efficiencies from 1.84 to 5.34%. We employed several techniques, including photoluminescence spectra, electroluminescence spectra, atomic force microscopy, and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray to probe the blends to find the effects of the side groups on the photovoltaic properties. We found that the electron acceptors with 2,6-di(dodecyloxy)phenyl units show high-lying frontier energy levels, good crystalline properties, and low nonradiative recombination loss, resulting in possible large phase separation and low energy loss, which is responsible for the low performance. Our results provide a detailed study about the side groups of non-fullerene materials, demonstrating that porphyrin can be used to design electron acceptors toward near-infrared absorption.
Push Or Pull Electrons: Acetoxy And Carbomethoxy-Substituted Isomerisms In Organic Solar Cell Acceptors

Abstract:Isomerism is a major factor affecting the properties of materials. Herein, two isomeric acceptors based on acetoxy and methyl ester end group substituents, BTIC-OCOMe and BTIC-COOMe are reported. When blended with PBDB-TF, devices based on BTIC-OCOMe achieve an inferior (8.32%) power conversion efficiency (PCE) while the BTIC-COOMe material has a superior PCE of 13.25%. We investigated the reasons why these two devices, which differ only in the isomeric substituents on the terminal site, have such a large difference in photovoltaic performance. Our investigation conducted theoretical calculations and examined UV-vis absorption, energy levels, exciton dissociation and bimolecular recombination, mobilities tests, photoluminescence, and packing modes. It is found that the energy levels of the materials are fine-tuned, the absorption spectra are adjusted, and the energy loss is regulated. Our studies explored the reasons for the properties of materials differing, and the acetoxy and carbomethoxy substitutions provided some useful information concerning high-performance acceptor materials.
End-Group Modifications with Bromine and Methyl in Nonfullerene Acceptors: The Effect of Isomerism

Abstract:The development of isomeric molecules has been widely exploited in molecular structures associated with organic solar cells (OSC) and is an effective pathway to finely tune the photoelectric properties and device performance. The molecular properties of nonfullerene acceptors and the morphology of blend films can be effectively controlled by manipulating isomeric substituent positions on benzene-fused end-capping groups (EG) in acceptors. Here, three isomeric EGs were designed and synthesized which simultaneously possess an electron-withdrawing bromine and an electron-donating methyl substituent. By linking three isomeric EGs, (Br,Me), (Br,Me)-1, and (Br,Me)-2 each with the BTP-CHO core, three isomeric small-molecule acceptors (SMA) were obtained. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:BTP-(Br,Me)-1-based OSCs is 13.43%, is much higher than that of PM6:BTP-(Br,Me)- (11.92%) and PM6:BTP-(Br,Me)-2- (11.08%) based devices. Abstract:Tuning the properties of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) through halogenation, including fluorination and chlorination, represents one of the most promising strategies to boost the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, it remains unclear how the F and Cl choice influences the molecular packing and performance between small-molecule and polymeric acceptors. Here, a series of small-molecule and polymeric acceptors with different amounts and types of halogenation is synthesized, and the effects of fluorination and chlorination between small-molecule and polymeric acceptors are investigated. It is found that chlorinated small-molecule acceptors lead to longer exciton diffusion length and better performance compared to the corresponding fluorinated ones, which attributes to their stronger intermolecular packing mode. For polymer acceptors, in contrast, the fluorinated polymers achieve a denser packing mode and better performance, because chlorinated polymers exhibit reduced intrachain conjugation between end group moieties and linker units. This study demonstrates different halogenation effects on the packing modes and performances for small-molecule and polymeric acceptors, which provides important guidance for the molecule design of high-performance acceptors for OSCs.

TSeIC4Br shows red‐shifted absorption range and higher frontier energy levels compared with that of TSeIC4Cl. Moreover, PM6:TSeIC4Br blend film exhibits more suitable phase‐separated morphology with more ordered molecular packing and improved miscibility compared with that of the tetrachlorinated counterpart. Importantly, PM6:TSeIC4Br‐based device exhibits a better power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.92%, with a higher open‐circuit voltage (Voc) and an enhanced short‐circuit current density (Jsc) when compared with that of PM6:TSeIC4Cl‐based device (11.13%). Furthermore, the energy loss can be reduced by replacing the disubstituents of end group from chlorine to bromine atoms. The results demonstrate that incorporation of indacenodithieno[3,2‐b]selenophene and replacement of tetrachlorination by tetrabromination on the end group contributes to elevating the Jsc, reduce energy loss, and enhancing the PCE for its relevant ITIC series device simultaneously, which may give a new avenue for achieving high‐performance multihalogenated ITIC series NF‐SMAs. </section>

Effect of Nitro-Substituted Ending Groups on the Photovoltaic Properties of Nonfullerene Acceptors

Abstract:Chemical modification of end groups has proved to be an effective way to design new acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A)-structured nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) for high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we designed and synthesized two nitro-substituted end groups, N1 and N2. Using the two end groups as A units, two A–D–A acceptors, F-N1 and F-N2, were obtained. It also has been found that the nitro substitution position on end groups affects not only the absorptions and energy levels of the resultant acceptor materials but also their molecular packing behavior and active layer morphologies. In addition, the devices based on the two acceptors showed different energy losses. Power-conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 10.66 and 11.86% were achieved for F-N1- and F-N2-based devices, respectively. Abstract:Chlorine-substituted conjugated polymers not only possess simple and high-yield synthetic steps due to the cheap raw materials available for their synthesis but also exhibit great potential for the commercial application of polymer solar cells (PSCs) with excellent photovoltaic performance. However, the current research of chlorine-substituted donor polymers is lagging compared to the rapid development of chlorinated acceptors. Here, a chlorine-free polymer PTBT and a chlorinated donor polymer PTBT-Cl were prepared and studied in parallel. The chlorine-substituted polymer PTBT-Cl showed a much lower highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level value of 5.46 eV and an enhanced aggregation behavior in film, achieving an optimized phase separation morphology in blend with an efficient acceptor compared with that of PTBT. Surprisingly, the chlorine-free PTBT-based PSCs showed a negligible power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.88%, while the PTBT-Cl exhibited a decent PCE of 12.31%, with a simultaneously increased short circuit current density (J(sc)) of 23.73 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 62.53%, when matched with the fused-ring electron acceptor (FREA) Y6. This work provides new insight into the economical design and synthesis of chlorine-substituted polymers, boosting the photovoltaic performance of PSCs.
