Abstract:Over the past decade, fintech's rapid advancement has garnered significant attention due to its substantial economic implications. Beyond this, it has deeply influenced social psychology and household behaviors. This study aims to assess fintech's influence on household financial asset allocation through a social psychological lens, delving into human behavioral adaptations to technological upgrade and economic shifts. Utilizing data from the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) for the years 2015, 2017, and 2019, coupled with county-level fintech data, our empirical findings indicate that fintech markedly bolsters household participation in financial markets. This leads to an increased allocation of financial assets to risky assets, particularly equities, fostering portfolio diversification. From a psychosocial standpoint, these effects arise as fintech heightens residents' interest and attention to economic and financial, diminishes their risk aversion, and fosters social interactions. Subsequent heterogeneity analysis suggests that while the promotional effect is somewhat muted in rural locales and among agricultural-registered households, it is notably pronounced among households characterized by higher education, greater average age, substantial assets, and entrepreneurial endeavors. Consequently, this research offers policymakers insights into leveraging fintech to refine financial asset allocation and mitigate financial risks by directing residents' psychological and behavioral inclinations.
