Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To investigate the association between tea consumption and mortality in the oldest-old Chinese.DESIGN:Population-based longitudinal data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) were analyzed using a Cox semiparametric proportional hazard model.SETTING:Six hundred thirty-one randomly selected counties and cities of China's 22 provinces.PARTICIPANTS:Individuals aged 80 and older (N = 9,093) who provided complete data in the baseline survey (1998).MEASUREMENTS:Self-reported current frequency of tea drinking and past frequency at approximately age 60 were ascertained at baseline survey; a follow-up survey was conducted 2000, 2002, and 2005.RESULTS:In the oldest-old Chinese, tea consumption was associated with lower risk of mortality after adjusting for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, health practices, and health status. Compared with non-tea drinkers, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) was 0.90 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.84-0.96) for daily tea drinkers (at the baseline survey, 1998) and 1.00 (95% CI = 1.01-1.07) for occasional tea drinkers (P for linear trend .003). Similar results were found when tea drinking status at age 60 was used in the analysis. Further analysis showed that subjects who reported frequent tea drinking at age 60 and at the baseline survey had a 10% lower risk of mortality than subjects who reported infrequent tea drinking at age 60 and at the baseline survey (HR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.84-0.97).CONCLUSION:Tea consumption is associated with lower risk of mortality in the oldest-old Chinese.

Abstract:Tea consumption has been documented to be influential on Asian older adults’ health. Nonetheless, few studies have investigated period and cohort changes in the linkage of tea consumption and older adults’ health. This study intended to fill the voids of prior literature by studying Chinese oldest old through analyzing data from eight (1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011-12, 2014 and 2018) waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Health outcomes were measured by self-rated health (SRH), cognitive function, chronic diseases and subjective wellbeing. The results showed percentages of frequent and occasional tea consumers among Chinese oldest old were declining over time. The drop in such percentages were more apparent among younger birth cohorts. Frequent tea consumers showed better health outcomes in all health dimensions, followed by occasional tea consumers. Over time, the predicted SRH, cognitive function, chronic diseases and subjective wellbeing showed an increasing trend. The period effect was also shown in crossovers of positive feeling scores in year 2008 among oldest old with different tea consumption patterns. It implied that impacts of major social events can overweight those of behavioral factors, such as tea drinking, on oldest old’s subjective feelings. Cohort effects were not as apparent as period effects. The study corroborated the beneficial effects of tea drinking on older adults’ health. It also emphasized the importance of taking period and cohort effects into consideration when linking health life styles to older adults’ health.

Abstract:Objective: We examined the longitudinal association between tea drinking frequency and cognitive function in a large sample of oldest-old Chinese. Design: population-based longitudinal cohort study. Setting: The Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Participants: 7139 participants aged 80 to 115 (mean age 91.4 years) who provided complete data at baseline (year 1998). Measurements: Current frequency of tea drinking and past frequency at age 60 were ascertained at baseline, and baseline and follow-up cognitive assessments were performed in the years 1998 (n=7139), 2000 (n=4081), 2002 (n=2288) and 2005 (n=913) respectively. Verbal fluency test was used as measure of cognitive function. Results: Tea drinking was associated at baseline with higher mean (SD) verbal fluency scores: daily=10.7 (6.6), occasional=9.2 (5.8), non-drinker=9.0 (5.5). In linear mixed effects model that adjusted for age, gender, years of schooling, physical exercise and activities score, the regression coefficient for daily drinking (at age 60) and occasional drinking was 0.72 (P<0.0001) and 0.41(P=0.01) respectively. Tea drinkers had higher verbal fluency scores throughout the follow-up period but concurrently had a steeper slope of cognitive decline as compared with non-drinkers (coefficient for the interaction term Time*Daily drinking=-0.12, P=0.02; 'Time' was defined as the time interval from baseline to follow-up assessments in years). Similar results were found for current tea drinking status at study baseline year (1998) as predictor variable. Conclusion: Regular tea drinking is associated with better cognitive function in oldest-old Chinese.

Abstract:Epidemiological studies have demonstrated inconsistent associations between tea consumption and mortality of all cancers, CVD and all causes. To obtain quantitative overall estimates, we conducted a dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. A literature search in PubMed and Embase up to April 2015 was conducted for all relevant papers published. Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled relative risks (RR) with 95 % CI. In eighteen prospective studies, there were 12 221, 11 306 and 55 528 deaths from all cancers, CVD and all causes, respectively. For all cancer mortality, the summary RR for the highest v. lowest category of green tea and black tea consumption were 1·06 (95 % CI 0·98, 1·15) and 0·79 (95 % CI 0·65, 0·97), respectively. For CVD mortality, the summary RR for the highest v. lowest category of green tea and black tea consumption were 0·67 (95 % CI 0·46, 0·96) and 0·88 (95 % CI 0·77, 1·01), respectively. For all-cause mortality, the summary RR for the highest v. lowest category of green tea and black tea consumption were 0·80 (95 % CI 0·68, 0·93) and 0·90 (95 % CI 0·83, 0·98), respectively. The dose-response analysis indicated that one cup per d increment of green tea consumption was associated with 5 % lower risk of CVD mortality and with 4 % lower risk of all-cause mortality. Green tea consumption was significantly inversely associated with CVD and all-cause mortality, whereas black tea consumption was significantly inversely associated with all cancer and all-cause mortality.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Despite accumulating evidence on the protective effect of tea consumption against depression, studies specifically focusing on the elderly population are yet limited. This paper examined the association between the frequency and duration of tea drinking and depressive symptoms of older adults by gender and age groups, based on a nationally representative sample in China.</p><h3 class="Heading">Method</h3><p class="Para">The study employed the panel data from 2005, 2008/2009, 2011/2012 and 2014 waves of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). We used the frequency and consistency of tea drinking behaviors to identify four types of tea consumption amongst Chinese seniors. Depressive symptoms were assessed by a five-item scale. Linear mixed effects models were applied.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">We found that consistent and frequent tea-drinking was associated with significantly less depressive symptoms, and such impact was partially mediated by socioeconomic status, health behavior, physical health, cognitive function, and social engagement. However, the association was only significant for males and the oldest-old, rather than females and younger elders.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">Consistent and frequent tea-drinking may effectively reduce the risk of depressive symptoms for the Chinese elderly. The promotion of the traditional lifestyle of tea drinking could be a cost-effective way towards healthy aging for China.</p>

[Association between tea consumption and all-cause mortality in Chinese adults].

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the association between tea consumption and the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality among Chinese adults. Methods: This study was based on China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB). Tea consumption information was self-reported by participants at baseline. Death was mainly identified by linkage to the death registry system. Cox proportional hazard regression models estimated HR and 95%CI. Results: With a median follow-up of 11.1 years, there were 34 661 deaths in 438 443 participants. Compared with those who never drink tea, all-cause mortality HR(95%CI) were 0.89(0.86-0.91) and 0.92(0.88-0.95) for non-daily tea drinkers and daily tea drinkers, respectively. A statistically significant difference was found in the association of tea consumption and the risk of all-cause mortality between men and women(interaction P<0.05). The protective effect was mainly seen in men. Compared with those who never drink tea, daily tea drinkers had a reduced risk of death from ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, cancer, respiration diseases and other causes of death, and the corresponding HR(95%CI) were 0.83(0.76-0.92), 0.82(0.69-0.97), 0.86(0.78-0.94), 1.03(0.97-1.09), 1.00(0.87-1.16), 0.84(0.78-0.90). Among never smokers and non-excessive drinkers, there was no statistically significant association between daily tea drinking and the risk of death from cancer. While smokers and excessive drinkers had an increased risk of death from cancer (interaction P<0.001). Conclusions: Tea consumers had reduced risks of all-cause mortality and partial cause-specific mortality, but not for the risk of death from cancer. On the contrary, daily tea drinkers with smoking habits and excessive alcohol drinking had an increased risk of death from cancer.
Tea Consumption and Gut Microbiome in Older Chinese Adults

Abstract:Background: Animal and small-cohort human studies have shown that tea consumption affects the gut microbiome, but evidence from large cohort studies is lacking. Objectives: We examined associations between tea consumption and gut microbiome composition among older Chinese adults. Methods: The study included 1179 men and 1078 women from the Shanghai Men's and Women's Health Studies, who reported tea drinking status, type, amount, and duration at baseline and follow-up surveys (1996-2017) and were free of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes at stool collection (2015-2018). Fecal microbiome was profiled using 16S rRNA sequencing. Associations of tea variables with microbiome diversity and taxa abundance were evaluated using linear or negative binomial hurdle models after adjusting for sociodemographics, lifestyle, and hypertension status. Results: Mean age at stool collection was 67.2 ± 9.0 y in men and 69.6 ± 8.5 y in women. Tea drinking was not associated with microbiome ɑ-diversity in men or women; however, all tea variables were associated with β-diversity in men (P < 0.001). Significant associations with taxa abundance were also observed mostly in men. Current tea drinking, mainly green tea drinking, was associated with increase in orders Synergistales and RF39 in men (β = 0.30 to 0.42, all PFDR ≤ 0.10) but not in women (PInteraction-sex = 0.01). Also, increase in families Coriobacteriaceae, Odoribacteraceae, genera Collinsella, Odoribacter, and species Collinsella aerofaciens, Coprococcus catus, and Dorea formicigenerans were observed among men who drank >3.3 cups (781 mL)/d compared to that of nondrinkers (all PFDR <0.10). The increased Coprococcus catus related to tea drinking was more evident among men without hypertension and inversely associated with the prevalence of hypertension (OR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.84, 0.97; PFDR = 0.03). Conclusions: Tea consumption may affect gut microbiome β-diversity and abundance of some bacteria, which may contribute to reduced hypertension risk in Chinese men. Future studies should examine the sex-specific tea-gut microbiome associations and how certain bacteria may mediate the health benefits of tea.
Association between tea consumption and frailty among Chinese older adults: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:BackgroundChronic inflammation is considered one of the main mechanisms leading to frailty. It has been demonstrated that tea consumption reduces chronic inflammation. Few epidemiological studies have investigated the association between tea consumption and frailty. ObjectiveThis study aimed to analyze the association between tea consumption and frailty in Chinese older adults. MethodsBetween March and May 2021, we enrolled 2,144 older adults aged >= 60 years in Jinan City, Shandong Province, China, using multi-stage stratified cluster sampling. We assessed tea consumption and frailty in older adults using the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) and the frequency of tea consumption, respectively. We applied multiple logistic regression analysis to examine the association between tea consumption and frailty, controlling for a set of potential covariates. ResultsThe prevalence of frailty among older Chinese adults was 38.3% (821/2,144). Tea consumption was categorized as daily (30.4%), occasionally (20.9%), and rarely or never (48.7%). As indicated by the fully adjusted model, daily tea consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of frailty (OR = 0.73, 95%CI = 0.57-0.94). However, this association only applied to men, younger older adults aged 60-79 years, rural residents, and regular participants in community activities. In addition, we observed a linear relationship between tea consumption and the prevalence of frailty (P for trend = 0.017). ConclusionsHigher tea consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of frailty in older adults, especially those men, older adults aged 60-79, rural residents, and individuals who regularly participated in community activities. Further longitudinal and experimental studies are needed to determine the causation between tea consumption and frailty.
FOXO1A-209-by-Tea-Drinking Interaction is Significantly Associated with Reduced Mortality Risk at Advanced Ages

Abstract:Proportional hazards model analysis based on data from 2,481 Han Chinese oldest-old aged 91+ demonstrated that interactions between carrying FOXO1A-209 genotype and tea-drinking are significantly associated with lower risk of mortality at advanced ages. The significant association is replicated in two independent CLHLS cohorts(p=0.018-0.048), and adjusted p-values for multiple comparisons by the Bonferroni method are 0.006-0.032 in combined dataset of two CLHLS cohorts. The results demonstrate that associations between tea-drinking and reduced mortality are much stronger among carriers of the genotypes of FOXO1A-209 compared to noncarriers. Based on previous research showing that intake of tea compounds activate FOXO1A gene expression and modulate its biological functions, we speculate that results in present study indicate that tea-drinking activates FOXO1A-209 gene expression which offers protection against mortality risk at oldest-old ages. Our empirical findings imply that health outcome of particular nutritional interventions, including tea drinking, may, in part, depend upon individual genetic profiles.
Tea consumption and cognitive impairment and decline in older Chinese adults

Abstract:Background: Laboratory research suggests that tea has potential neurocognitive protective effects, but this is not established in humans. Objective: We aimed to examine the relation between tea intake and cognitive impairment and decline. Design: Among community-living Chinese adults aged > or = 55 y in the Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Studies cohort, we measured tea consumption at baseline and administered the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) at baseline and 1-2 y later. Cognitive impairment was defined as an MMSE score < or = 23 and cognitive decline as a drop in MMSE score of > or = 1 point. We performed cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 2501 participants and longitudinal analysis of data from 1438 cognitively intact participants. Odds ratios (ORs) of association were calculated in logistic regression models that adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Total tea intake was significantly associated with a lower prevalence of cognitive impairment, independent of other risk factors. Compared with the ORs for rare or no tea intake, the ORs for low, medium, and high levels of tea intake were 0.56 (95% CI: 0.40, 0.78), 0.45 (95% CI: 0.27, 0.72), and 0.37 (95% CI: 0.14, 0.98), respectively (P for trend < 0.001). For cognitive decline, the corresponding ORs were 0.74 (95% CI: 0.54, 1.00), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.55, 1.11), and 0.57 (95% CI: 0.32, 1.03), respectively (P for trend = 0.042). These effects were most evident for black (fermented) and oolong (semi-fermented) teas, the predominant types consumed by this population. In contrast, no association between coffee intake and cognitive status was found. Conclusion: Regular tea consumption was associated with lower risks of cognitive impairment and decline.

Abstract:Neurodegenerative disease Alzheimer's disease (AD) is attracting growing concern because of an increasing patient population among the elderly. Tea consumption is considered a natural complementary therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. In this paper, epidemiological studies on the association between tea consumption and the reduced risk of AD are reviewed and the anti-amyloid effects of related bioactivities in tea are summarized. Future challenges regarding the role of tea in preventing AD are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Background and aims The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and tea consumption has been studied in previous work, and there were arguments among various population group employed as well as different statistical approaches. The aim of this work is to investigate the tea effect on SUA levels among older adults by comparing three large-scale populations with both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. Method We examined the relationship between intake and SUA levels among older adults using linear regression. All the studies include the parameters SUA levels, tea intake, age, sex, education level, smoking status, alcohol drinking status, body mass index (BMI), and health history (diabetes, hypertension, and fasting plasma glucose). The cross-sectional analyses were conducted with 4579 older adults in the Weitang Geriatric Diseases Study (WGDS, ≥60 years), 2440 in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS, ≥60 years) and 1236 in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS, ≥62 years); and the longitudinal analyses were performed with 3870 (84.5%) in the WGDS and 420 (34.0%) in the CLHLS. Multivariable linear regression analyses were performed in both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Results Cross-sectional studies showed that tea consumers tended to have higher SUA levels than non-tea consumers in all the three datasets ( P 0.05). The results of sex-stratified analyses were consistent with those of the whole datasets. Conclusions This work implied that any possible association between tea consumption and SUA levels could be very weak.

Abstract:Aims: To understand the exposure experiences of tea consumption in community male adult population of urban China and its potential beneficences in cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Study Design: A cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Communities in Shanghai, Chengdu and Hangzhou, China between July to September, 2006. Methodology: Face-to-face questionnaire interviews through household visit were carried out to collect information on tea consumption and health conditions in Chinese men. The amount of tea-leaves consumed per time was weighed in grams using identical balances. Results: In this study, 73.7% (2156/2927) subjects met the criteria of present tea Research Article British Journal of Medicine & Medical Research, 3(4): 1407-1417, 2013 1408 drinkers (PTDRs) at the time of interview, and the age-gender standardized proportion was 66.4%. Most of PTDRs drank tea every day and amounts of tea consumption did not vary over seasons. The average weekly amounts of tea consumption in grams for PTDRs varied from 55.2 grams green tea per week to 71.7 grams oolong tea per week. Also, green tea drinking was significantly inversely associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Conclusion: This study provides an informative and comprehensive description of tea drinking in urban Chinese male population. Findings from this study also present the possibility of health benefits of green tea for male Chinese population.

Abstract:The benefits of tea consumption as a special diet for health and life satisfaction have attracted considerable attention; however, it is not clear whether the effect of tea consumption on self‐rated health (SRH) and self‐rated life satisfaction (SRL) is equal among all types of tea, and it is unclear whether these associations are impacted by gender and age in older adults. This study aimed to examine the associations between tea consumption, SRH and SRL in older adults and to explore the role of gender and age. Participants aged 65–105 (N = 78,345) were interviewed in the years 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2018 in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study (CLHLS). Generalized estimation equations (GEE) with the identity link function were adopted to estimate the cross‐sectional associations of tea consumption with SRH and SRL. GEE with the logic link function were used to explore the longitudinal associations of tea consumption with SRH decline and SRL decline. Drinking tea at present, especially scented tea, was significantly associated with better SRH and SRL for older adults. Male participants benefited more from tea consumption than females, and the protective effect of green tea consumption on improving SRH and SRL in males was evident. Older adults aged 90–105 with current tea consumption daily had better SRH and reduced risk of SRL decline.

The Association Between Habitual Tea Consumption and Frailty Transition in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the association between habitual tea consumption and transitions between frailty states among older adults in China. Design: A prospective cohort study based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study. Setting and participants: A total of 23,720 older adults aged ≥65 years with complete data regarding frailty status and tea consumption were recruited. Methods: The frequency and consistency of tea consumption were introduced to evaluate levels of tea consumption. The frailty index was used to define frailty status (frail and nonfrail). Frailty transition was classified into remaining nonfrail, improvement, worsening, and remaining frail groups. Logistic regression models were applied. Results: The overall frailty prevalence at baseline was 19.1%, being lower among consistent daily tea drinkers (12.5%) and higher among non-tea drinkers (21.9%). Logistic regression analyses showed that the risk of frailty was significantly reduced among consistent daily tea drinkers after adjusting for all confounders [odds ratio (OR), 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67-0.98]. During the 3-year follow-up, improvement in frailty status was more common among consistent daily tea drinkers (50.9%) than non-tea drinkers (40.9%), and this trend was opposite in participants with worsened frailty status (consistent daily tea drinkers: 12.2%) vs non-tea drinkers: 19.2%). Further analysis showed that consistent daily tea drinkers were significantly associated with improvement in frailty status (OR, 3.24; 95% CI, 1.02-10.31) and remaining in a nonfrail state (OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.00-1.83). In addition, daily tea consumption was observed to be positively associated with remaining in a nonfrail state and inversely associated with worsened frailty status in men, but not in women. Conclusions and implications: Older people consuming tea daily tend to have an improved frailty status in the future. Men with daily tea consumption were less likely to have a worsened frailty status. Advocating for the traditional lifestyle of drinking tea could be a promising way to advance healthy aging for older adults.

Abstract:Objective As the global population ages, disability among the elderly presents unprecedented challenges for healthcare systems. However, limited research has examined whether dietary interventions like tea consumption may alleviate and prevent disability in older adults. As an important dietary therapy, the health benefits of tea drinking have gained recognition across research disciplines. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between tea drinking habits and disability levels in the elderly Chinese population. Methods Leveraging data from the 2008 to 2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, we disaggregated tea drinking frequency and activities of daily living (ADL) measures and deployed fixed-effect ordered logit models to examine the tea-disability association for the first time. We statistically adjusted for potential confounders and conducted stratified analyses to assess heterogeneity across subpopulations. Results Multivariable fixed-effect ordered logistic regression suggested tea drinking has protective effects against ADL disability. However, only daily tea drinking was associated with lower risks of basic activities of daily living (BADL) disability [odds ratio (OR) = 0.61; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.41–0.92] and lower levels of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability (OR = 0.78; 95% CI, 0.64–0.95). Stratified analyses indicated heterogeneous effects across age and income groups. Daily tea drinking protected against BADL (OR = 0.26 and OR = 0.28) and IADL disability (OR = 0.48 and OR = 0.45) for adults over 83 years old and high-income households, respectively. Conclusion We found that drinking tea almost daily was protective against disability in elderly people, warranting further research into optimal dosages. Future studies should utilize more rigorous causal inference methods and control for confounders.

Abstract:Environmental and lifestyle factors that affect oxidative stress and inflammation may influence telomere length (TL). There are limited data to relate the effect of dietary components on TL. The present study examined the association between food groups and TL in a sample of elderly Chinese. In a sample of 2006 Chinese (976 men and 1030 women) aged 65 years and over, TL was measured by quantitative real-time PCR and daily intake of food groups was assessed by a validated FFQ. Linear regression and analysis of covariance were used to examine the association between food group intake and TL, with adjustment for demographic and lifestyle factors. In men, only Chinese tea consumption was significantly associated with TL after adjustment for demographics and lifestyle factors ( P = 0·002). Mean difference in TL for those in the highest quartile of Chinese tea consumption (>3 cups/d or >750 ml/d) as compared with those in the lowest quartile of Chinese tea consumption ( ≤ 0·28 cups/d or ≤ 70 ml/d) was 0·46 kb, corresponding to approximately a difference of 5 years of life. In women, intake of fats and oils was borderline and negatively associated with TL after adjustment for demographic and lifestyle factors ( P = 0·037). In conclusion, Chinese tea consumption was positively associated with TL in elderly Chinese men.

Abstract:ObjectivesThis present study aims to investigate the effect of tea consumption on cognitive function and examine possible psychosocial mechanisms in older adults.Participants and methodsThe data of this study came from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS), and a total of 11,910 valid samples were included. We used ordinary least squares (OLS) to explore whether frequent tea consumption had significant effect on the cognitive function of older people. The problem of endogeneity was addressed by using a propensity score matching (PSM). Then we further explored the psychosocial mechanisms of the effect using a stepwise regression approach.ResultsFrequent tea consumption produced a positive effect on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score (coefficient = 0.340, p < 0.01), and PSM showed similar results. Specifically, the positive effect of green tea (coefficient 0.409, p < 0.01) was significantly greater than the other teas (coefficient 0.261, p < 0.1). Moreover, frequent tea drinkers were 59.7, 74.8, and 81.8% less likely to have severe, moderate and mild cognitive impairment respectively, compared to infrequent tea drinkers (p < 0.01). Levels of depression and sleep quality had partial mediation effect for frequent tea consumption on cognitive function, accounting for 27.6 and 3.5% of the total effect, respectively.ConclusionFrequent tea consumption was found to have beneficial effects on cognitive function, especially in older people with green tea intake. Sleep quality and levels of depression partially mediated the association between frequent tea consumption and cognitive function among Chinese older adults.
