Abstract:To address the challenge of interfacial contact between the solid electrolyte and electrode with a cost-efficient solution, we demonstrate a novel cathode-supported solid electrolyte membrane framework for advanced all solid state Li ion batteries. The solid electrolyte is directly cast on the cathode layer to enhance the wetting ability of solid electrolyte onto the cathode and reinforce the interfacial adhesion. Results show that the as-fabricated LiFePO4/Li solid state battery displays superior battery performances, e.g., an initial discharge capacity of 125 mA hg(-1) at 0.1C at room temperature can be achieved. The proposed electrolyte framework represents a promising strategy for mass production of high performance all solid state batteries based on Li metal anodes.

Abstract:All-solid-state batteries employing sulfide solid electrolyte and Li metal anode are promising because of their high safety and energy densities. However, the interface between Li metal and sulfides suffers from catastrophic instability which stems the practical use. Here, a dynamically stable sulfide electrolyte architecture to construct the hierarchy of interface stability is reported. By rationally designing the multilayer structures of sulfide electrolytes, the dynamic decomposing-alloying process from MS4 (M = Ge or Sn) unit in sulfide interlayer can significantly prohibit Li dendrite penetration is revealed. The abundance of highly electronic insulating decompositions, such as Li2S, at the sulfide interlayer interface helps to well constrain the dynamic decomposition process and preserve the long-term polarization stability is also highlighted. By using Li6PS5Cl||Li10SnP2S12||Li6PS5Cl electrolyte architecture, Li metal anode shows an unprecedented critical current density over 3 mA cm-2 and achieves the steady over-potential for approximate to 900 hours. Based upon the merits, the Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 battery delivers a remarkable 75.3% retention even after 600 cycles at 1 C (1C-0.95 mA cm-2) under a low stack pressure of 15 MPa. A universal dynamically stable multilayer sulfide electrolyte to inhibit dendrite and stabilize polarization is reported. It is revealed that the dynamic decomposing-alloying process by the HVMEC-SSE interlayer prohibits dendrite penetration. Li anode shows an unprecedented critical current density over 3 mA cm-2 and holds the steady over-potential for approximate to 900 h. Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries with high energy density and safety have gained increasing attention due to their potential applications. However, the practical use of solid electrolytes is hindered by several challenges. These include poor compatibility at the electrode-electrolyte interface, low ionic conductivity at room temperature, and fast capacity degradation. To address these issues, here we propose ternary strategies by in-situ cross-linked plastic crystal electrolyte (in-situ PCE) based on succinonitrile (SN). Through the in-situ polymerization of SN with polyacrylonitrile/poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PAN/PVDF) nanofibers separator, excellent mechanical strength and compatibility at the electrode-electrolyte interface are achieved. The cross-linked structure of thermally polymerized ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) immobilizes the SN molecule, preventing its contact with the lithium metal and inhibiting irreversible side reactions. Additionally, a LiF-rich passivation layer is employed to further protect the SN at the electrolyte-lithium metal interface. The dual protection from ETPTA and LiF offers excellent stability to lithium. Hence, the in-situ PCE exhibits high ionic conductivity (0.79 mS cm-1 at 30 degrees C) and wide electrochemical window (4.56 V, vs Li+/Li). The cells exhibit excellent cycling stability and high-rate performance. LiFePO4//Li cells retain 96.6 % capacity after 1000 cycles at 10C rate. This study provides valuable insights into the development of high-performance solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:AbstractIn solid‐state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs), the inhomogeneous electrolyte‐electrode interphase layer aggravates the interfacial stability, leading to discontinuous interfacial ion/charge transport and continuous degradation of the electrolyte. Anions modulate the decomposition behavior of supramolecular poly (vinylene carbonate) (PVC) at the electrode interface by changing the spatial conformation of the polymer chains, which further enhances ion transport and stabilizes the interfacial morphology. In addition, the AMIC weakens the “Li+‐solvation” and increases Li+ vehicle sites, thereby enhancing the lithium‐ion transport number (tLi+=~0.67). Consequently, Li || LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cell maintains about 85 % capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency >99.8 % in 200 cycles at a charge cut‐off voltage of 4.5 V. This study provides a new understanding of lithium salt anions regulating polymer chain segment behavior in the solid‐state polymer electrolyte (SPE) and highlights the importance of the ion environment in the construction of interfacial phases and ionic conduction.

Ultraconformal chemo-mechanical stable cathode interface for high-performance all-solid-state batteries at wide temperatures

Abstract:The state-of-the-art all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) based on Ni-rich layered oxides suffer from notorious solid-solid interface issues especially at the cathode side, leading to deteriorating interfacial transportation and rapid performance degradation. Here we report a transformative mechanical strategy to build an ultraconformal cathode interface between Ni-rich layered metal oxides and halide solid electrolytes (SEs). The composite cathodes with ultraconformal interface show excellent mechanical properties with high Young's modulus and Vickers hardness, which significantly suppresses the chemo-mechanical deformation and facilitates the interfacial transport of lithium ions and electrons. This approach remarkably enhances the capacity to 216.4 mA h g-1 at 0.1C with a superior initial coulomb efficiency of 91.6%, which rivals the Ni-rich layered cathode in the organic liquid batteries. Furthermore, the proposed ASSLBs demonstrate ideal low-temperature performance with capacities of 172.5 and 118.4 mA h g-1 at 0 and -20 OC, respectively, the highest values in the state-of-the-art ASSLBs. This study offers a promising strategy to construct ultraconformal chemo-mechanical stable cathode interface for high-performance ASSLBs in a wide temperature range.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries as promising energy storage devices have gathered many attentions for its appealing properties, such as improved safety and capacity density. Nevertheless, high interfacial resistance, uneven current density and severe Li dendrite growth caused by rigid contact at the cathode-electrolyte interface in solid-state batteries greatly restrict its electrochemical performance and further practical application. Herein, a cathode-electrolyte integrating strategy is proposed to achieve the soft interfacial contact through employing poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based composite electrolyte as the cathode binder and subsequent heat-pressing procedure. Due to the modification strategy, fabricated cells with integrated structure show lower resistance, faster Li-ion transport, enhanced capacity and improved cycle stability. The integrated LiFePO4/Li cell exhibits superior electrochemical performance, which present a capacity retention of 93.8% and 91.6% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C and 400 cycles at 1 C, respectively, being able to compare favorably with the conventional cells using liquid electrolyte. Overall, the study provides a solution for designing advanced solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are considered as one of the ultimate goals for the development of energy storage systems due to their high energy density and high safety. However, the mismatching of interface transport kinetics as well as interfacial instability induces the growth of lithium dendrite and thus, leads to severe degradation of battery electrochemical performances. Herein, an integrated interface configuration (IIC) consisting of in-situ generated LiI interphase and Li-Ag alloy anode is proposed through in-situ interface chemistry. The IIC is capable of not only regulating charge transport kinetics but also synchronously stabilizing the lithium/electrolyte interface, thereby achieving uniform lithium platting. Therefore, Li||Li symmetric cells with IIC achieve a critical current density of up to 1.6 mA cm-2 and achieve stable cycling over 1600 hours at a high current density of 0.5 mA cm-2. Moreover, a high discharge capacity of 140.1 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C is also obtained for the Li (Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2)O2 (NCM622) full battery with a capacity retention of 65.6% after 300 cycles. This work provides an effective method to synergistically regulate the interface transport kinetics and inhibit lithium dendrite growth for high-performance ASSLMBs. In-Situ Polymerized High-Voltage Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries with Dual-Reinforced Stable Interfaces

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) represent a pivotal advance toward high-energy solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, inadequate interfacial contact remains a significant bottleneck, impeding scalability and application. Recent efforts have focused on transforming liquid/solid interfaces into solid/solid ones through in situ polymerization, which shows potential especially in reducing interface impedance. Here, we designed high-voltage SSLMBs with dual-reinforced stable interfaces by combining interface modification with an in situ polymerization technology inspired by targeted effects in medicine. Theoretical calculations and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analysis demonstrate that tetramethylene sulfone (TMS) and bis(2,2,2-trifluoromethyl) carbonate (TFEC) exhibit selective adsorption at the interface of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM) cathode and Li anode, respectively. These compounds further decompose to form a stable cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) film and a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film, thereby simultaneously achieving a superior interface between the SPE and both the Li anode and NCM cathode. The developed Li||SPE||Li cell sustained cycling for more than 1000 h at 0.3 mA cm-2, and the NCM||SPE||Li cell also demonstrated an excellent capacity retention of 86.8% after 1000 cycles at 1 °C. This work will provide valuable insights for the rational design of high-voltage SSLMBs with stable interfaces, leveraging in situ polymerization as a cornerstone technology.

Abstract:The developing of all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries promises to improve safety and energy density. The challenges in the anode electrolyte interface are crucial and divided into static and dynamic issues in this review. The static issues are mainly shown as the huge resistances appearing in the assembled batteries, while the dynamic issues are reflected in the rapid deterioration of cycling performance. The static issues are mainly due to the poor chemical stability and interfacial contact, while dendrite growth and void formation are contained in the dynamic issues. Solving dynamic issues on the basis of static issues can conduce to the construction of stable all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLMBs) have been regarded as one of the most promising battery systems due to their high energy density and excellent safety. However, the low ionic conductivity of solid electrolyte (normally < 1 mS cm −1 ) does not meet the practical application of SSLMBs. Herein, we propose a vertically-aligned composite solid electrolytes (VA-CSE) with dual Li + transportation paths: one dimensional (1D) Li + -transportation highway in lithium montmorillonite (Li-MMT) layer along aligned poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) channels and unique Li + hopping path created by aggregated ions pairs in polymerized vinyl ethylene carbonate-based electrolyte. This Li-MMT/PVDF-HFP solid electrolyte (Li-MPSE) exhibits superionic conductivity of 1.99 mS cm −1 and high lithium transference number (0.73) at 30 °C. With this superior Li-MPSE electrolyte, Li/LiFePO 4 solid-state batteries stably cycle 200 times with 99.7% capacity retention at 0.5 C and pouch cell also presents excellent electrochemical performance and safety.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries overwhelm the lithium-ion batteries by harvesting high energy from Li metal anode with ultrahigh capacities and gaining excellent safety from solid electrolytes. However, the uncontrollable solvents in solid electrolytes usually aggravate poor interfacial contact with lithium metal anode and deteriorate Li + pathways. Here a copolymeric network-structured ion conductor by rationally integrating cellulose nanofibril as a two-in-one functional material is employed to anchor the solvent. Taking advantages of tightly anchoring of cellulose nanofibril to solvent, the as-constructed quasi-solid polymer-based electrolyte offers rapid Li + transport channels and realizes effective Li-dendrite suppression, which enables high ionic conductivity of 1.93 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature, long-term Li plating/stripping over 1900 h, and high capacity retention of 99%. This work provides a fresh strategy for creating solid electrolytes that meet both high ionic conductivity and interfacial stability requirements for practical solid-state lithium metal battery.

Abstract:All-inorganic solid-state batteries (AISSBs) hold great promise as the next-generation energy storage technology, offering exceptional safety and high energy density. However, achieving satisfactory solid-to-solid interfacial contact between battery components presents a significant challenge. An ideal approach is the integration of electrodes with electrolyte to form an all-in-one battery. While feasible using a molten lithium as anode, the cathodic side poses more challenges due to detrimental elemental diffusion during high-temperature treatment. Here, we demonstrate a simple and cost-effective liquid-phase sintering assisted in-situ interfacial growth strategy. This strategy enables the formation of an integrated LiCoO 2 cathode on Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 (LLZTO) electrolyte, connected by a unique decrystallizing interlayer. Notably, this interlayer consists of Co-doped LLZTO nanocrystals dispersed in its amorphous matrix (referred to as the NAM area), where the amorphous matrix effectively blocks detrimental elemental diffusion, while the nanocrystals facilitate Li + transport. Benefitting from this unique NAM structure, the fabricated all-in-one all-solid-state battery exhibits an impressive long cycle life (over 500 cycles at 0.2C). This remarkable cycling performance demonstrates the robustness and reliability of the interlayer. This finding would pave the way for the development of practical AISSBs, offering new prospects in the field of advanced energy storage.

Abstract:Solid-state batteries with high energy density and safety are promising next-generation battery systems. However, lithium oxide and lithium sulfide electrolytes suffer low ionic conductivity and poor electrochemical stability, respectively. Lithium halide solid electrolyte shows high conductivity and good compatibility with the pristine high-voltage cathode but limited applications due to the high price of rare metal. Zr-based lithium halides with low cost and high stability possess great potential. Herein, a small amount of In3+ is introduced in Li2ZrCl6 to synthesize Li2.25Zr0.75In0.25Cl6 electrolytes with a high room temperature Li-ion conductivity of 1.08 mS/cm. Solid-state batteries using Li2.25Zr0.75In0.25Cl6/Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5 bilayer solid electrolytes combined with Li-In anode and pristine LiNi0.7Mn0.2Co0.1O2 cathode deliver high initial discharge capacities under different cut-off voltages. This work provides an effective strategy for enhancing the conductivity of Li2ZrCl6 electrolytes, promoting their applications in solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries have attracted broad interest as a promising energy storage technology because of the high energy density and enhanced safety that are highly desired in the markets of consumer electronics and electric vehicles. However, there are still many challenges before the practical application of the new battery. One of the major challenges is the poor interface between lithium metal electrodes and solid electrolytes, which eventually lead to the exceptionally high internal resistance of the cells and limited output. The interface issue arises largely due to the poor contact between solid and solid, and the mechanical/electrochemical instability of the interface. In this work, an in situ "welding" strategy is developed to address the interfacial issue in solid-state batteries. Microliter-level of liquid electrolyte is transformed into an organic-inorganic composite buffer layer, offering a flexible and stable interface and promoting enhanced electrochemical performance. Symmetric lithium-metal batteries with the new interface demonstrate good cycling performance for 400 h and withstand the current density of 0.4 mA cm-2. Full batteries developed with lithium-metal anode and LiFePO4 cathode also demonstrate significantly improved cycling endurance and capacity retention.
Trace weak solvation environment enabling ultra-stable high-voltage solid-state lithium metal battery

Abstract:Abstract Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based solid-state electrolytes with “Li salt-polymer-trace residual solvent” configuration are the most promising candidates for room-temperature solid-state batteries. However, we reveal that an unstable high concentration [Li(N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF))x]+ solution structure is locally aggregated in PVDF matrix acting as solid diluent, which presents strong intermolecular interactions with PVDF that greatly restricts the high throughput ion transport and interfacial stability. Here, we propose a universal strategy to construct stable weakened solvation environment by partially replacing the DMF using 2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide (TFA). The TFA presents much lower binding energy with both Li+ and PVDF than DMF, which synchronously achieve high ionic conductivity (7.0×10-4 S cm-1) and Li transference number (0.67) of PVDF-based electrolyte. The TFA can also tailor the solvation structures to form abundant contact ion pairs and aggregates that generate inorganic-rich interfaces to greatly enhance the stability with both Li metal anode and high voltage cathode. The developed composite electrolyte enables record cycling of 2890 and 600 hours in solid-state Li||Li symmetric cells at 0.5 mA cm-2 and 1 mA cm-2, respectively. The solid-state Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cells show ultra-long lifespan of 4900 and 3000 times with cut-off voltage of 4.3 V and 4.5 V, respectively, and deliver superior stability under practical conditions from -20 to 45 °C and pouch cell level.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) have attracted great interest due to their promising energy density and strong safety. However, the interface issues, including large interfacial resistance between electrode and electrolyte and low electrochemical stability of solid-state electrolytes against high-voltage cathodes, have restricted the development of high-voltage ASSLBs. Herein, we report an ASSLB with stable cycling by adopting a conformal polymer interlayer in-situ formed at the Li 64 La 3 Zr 14 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO)–cathode interfaces. The polymer can perfectly fill the voids and create a stable interface contact between LLZTO and cathodes. In addition, the electric field across the polymer interlayer is reduced compared with pure solid polymer electrolyte (SPE), which facilitates the electrochemical stability with high-voltage cathode. The all-solid-state Li∣LLZTO-SPE∣LiFe 0.4 Mn 0.6 PO 4 (LMFP) cells achieve a low interface impedance, high specific capacity, and excellent cycling performance. This work presents an effective and practical strategy to rationally design the electrode–electrolyte interface for the application of high-voltage ASSLBs.

Abstract:All-solid-state sulfide-based Li metal batteries are promising candidates for energy storage systems. However, thorny issues associated with undesired reactions and contact failure at the anode interface hinder their commercialization. Herein, an indium foil was endowed with a formed interlayer whose surface film is enriched with LiF and LiIn phases via a feasible prelithiation route. The lithiated alloy of the interlayer can regulate Li+ flux and charge distribution as a Li reservoir, benefiting uniform Li deposition. Meanwhile, it can suppress the reductive decomposition of the Li6PS5Cl electrolyte and maintain sufficient solid-solid contact. In situ impedance spectra reveal that constant interface impedance and fast charge transfer are realized by the interlayer. Further, long-term Li stripping/plating over 2000 h at 2.55 mA cm-2 is demonstrated by this anode. All-solid-state cells employing a LiCoO2 cathode and the Pre In anode can work for over 700 cycles with a capacity retention of 96.15% at 0.5 C.
