Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Preparation of functional ethoxysilane-containing polyethylene through ethylene coordination copolymerization catalyzed by iminopyrrolide vanadium complex

Abstract:A well-defined silane-functionalized comonomer, 7-octenylethoxydimethylsilane (OEMS), was synthesized through hydrosilylation reaction of dimethylethoxysilane with 1,7-octadiene. Catalyzed by a vanadium complex bearing iminopyrrolide ligands (VCIP), the functional ethoxysilane-containing polyethylenes (PE-co-OEMS) were synthesized by copolymerization of ethylene with OEMS. The structure and properties of PE-co-OEMSs were characterized with 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HT-GPC and DSC. It was found that catalytic activity still remained 1.2 kg·mmol?1·h?1 when OEMS feeding reached to 60 mmol·L?1, and the OEMS incorporating in the copolymer was 1.3%(mol). Besides, the OEMS feeding had a great influence on the average molecular weight (Mw) and distribution (PDI) of copolymers. The Mw and PDI of PE-co-OEMS were 16900 and 2.1 when OEMS feeding was 30 mmol·L?1. With further increasing the OEMS feeding, Mw increased and PDI became wider. The melting temperature (Tm) and crystallization enthalpy (ΔHc) decreased with the increase of OEMS incorporation. The ethoxysilane-containing copolymers were easily crosslinked under the catalysis of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, and the copolymer gel contents after crosslinking were nearly 100%.
Mechanically Strong, Autonomous Self-Healing, and Fully Recyclable Silicone Coordination Elastomers with Unique Photoluminescent Properties

Abstract:The combination of excellent mechanical performances, high reprocess efficiency, and wide-range tunability for functional dynamic siloxane materials is a challenging subject. Herein, the fabrication of mechanically strong, autonomous self-healing, and fully recyclable silicone elastomers with unique photoluminescent properties by coordination of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) containing coordination bonding motifs with Zn2+ ions is reported. Salicylaldimine groups, which are introduced into the polysiloxane backbone via mild Schiff-base reaction, coordinate with zinc ions to form elastomeric networks The obtained supramolecular elastomers have excellent mechanical properties, with the optimized tensile strength up to 10.0 MPa, which is unprecedented among the reported thermoplastic polysiloxane-based elastomers. Both mechanical properties and stress relaxation kinetics are tunable via adjusting the length of PDMS segments or the molar ratio of metal versus salicylaldimine. Furthermore, these elastomers can be conveniently healed and recycled to regain their original mechanical properties and integrity under mild conditions. In addition, this new kind of polysiloxane also exhibits coordination-enhanced fluorescence, showing great promise for preparing photoluminescent elastomers or coatings.
A systematic study on Zn(II)-Iminocarboxyl complexation applied in supramolecular PDMS networks

Abstract:Metal-ligand coordination was used to construct supramolecular elastomers with self-healing ability and excellent mechanical properties. In this study, novel iminocarboxyl-functionalized polysiloxanes (PDMS-Iminocarboxyl) was synthesized through amine-functionalized polysiloxanes (PDMS-NH2) with acrylic acid by aza-Michael addiction based on 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The incorporation of zinc ions into the PDMS-Iminocarboxyl as chemical crosslinks could essentially improve the thermal and mechanical properties because of highly dynamic Zn(II)-iminocarboxyl complexation. The stoichiometric ratio of [Zn2+]/[COOH] were determined by NMR titration. Furthermore, the presence of dynamic Zn(II)-iminocarboxyl equilibrium could allow a degree of strain sensitivity upon various stretching rates based on tensile experiments and rheological analysis. From the DMA and rheological analysis, modulus transition of x networks was closely related to the association-dissociation of Zn(II)-iminocarboxyl complexation. Besides, DFT calculations further provided the optimized configuration of metal-ligand complex according to the bond-valence-bond-length correlations.

Abstract:<p>Ionic hydrogen bonding elastomers (IHSEs) as functional materials with a favorable self-healing ability and sensitive response to pH or heat have been increasingly investigated, yet most of these IHSEs are based on carbon chains with amino and carboxyl functional groups. Herein we describe an ionic hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) elastomer containing amino and unsaturated carboxyl groups produced via a facile and completely solvent-free synthesis route. Unsaturated carboxyl-grafted PDMS (UCS) and saturated carboxyl-grafted PDMS (SCS) were synthesized by reacting amino-grafted PDMS (APS) with maleic anhydride and succinic anhydride by simple mixing, respectively. The fact that IHSEs could be abtained by mixing UCS and APS while the mixture of SCS and APS was viscous fluid reveals difference of strength of ionic hydrogen bonds formed by unsaturated/saturated carboxyl groups with amino groups. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to investigate the role of unsaturated carboxyl groups which are conjugated with CC on the strength of the ionic interactions. Stronger ionic hydrogen bonds from unsaturated carboxyl-amino complex were further confirmed by NMR titration. The mechanical properties and self-healing ability may be fine-tuned by adjusting the ion cross-linking density and –COOH and –NH<sub>2</sub> feed ratios. Furthermore, excess unsaturated carboxyl groups make IHSEs practically adhesive. We hope to further investigate the cross-linking mechanism of the ionic interactions inside the supramolecular network and to create a facile method to create supramolecular elastic systems.</p>

A toolbox of oligopeptide-modified polymers for tailored elastomers

Abstract:Biomaterials are constructed from limited sets of building blocks but exhibit extraordinary and versatile properties, because hierarchical structure formation lets them employ identical supramolecular motifs for different purposes. Here we exert a similar degree of structural control in synthetic supramolecular elastomers and thus tailor them for a broad range of thermomechanical properties. We show that oligopeptide-terminated polymers selectively self-assemble into small aggregates or nanofibrils, depending on the length of the oligopeptides. This process is self-sorting if differently long oligopeptides are combined so that different nanostructures coexist in bulk mixtures. Blends of polymers with oligopeptides matching in length furnish reinforced elastomers that exhibit shear moduli one order of magnitude higher than the parent polymers. By contrast, novel interpenetrating supramolecular networks that display excellent vibration damping properties are obtained from blends comprising non-matching oligopeptides or unmodified polymers. Hence, blends of oligopeptide-modified polymers constitute a toolbox for tailored elastomers with versatile properties.

Abstract:This paper presents some works exploiting the ate-type addition of electron-withdrawing monomers to hydrogenosiloxane groups so as to generate original silicone materials. Two types of monomers were oligomerized onto silicone backbones, namely unsaturated phosphonate and sulfone monomers. Phosphonated silicones are thermally more resistant than conventional silicones and can be transformed into amphiphilic polymers after selective ester hydrolysis. Sulfoned silicones generate solid supramolecular elastomers thanks to the strong pseudo-ionic interactions in play between multiple sulfone groups. Rheology and modulated DSC show a transition around 175°C, corresponding to the disruption of strongly interacting stacked oligomers. Block copolymers can be reprocessed using a chaotropic salt, whereas grafted copolymers are not reprocessable after solvent removal. These results open new avenues in the generation of silicone block- and grafted-copolymers with unique functionality and properties.

Abstract:The physical properties of five siloxane polymers with different types and frequencies of amino functional groups along the polymer side chains have been manipulated from flowing liquids to gels and to rubber-like materials by the simple addition or subtraction of a neutral triatomic molecule, CO2 or CS2, at room temperature. The chemical changes, formation of ammonium carbamates and ammonium dithiocarbamates, create materials whose properties are totally different from those of the parent polymers as a result of the introduction of ionic cross-links. These materials can be returned to their original forms by heating (in the case of the CO2 adducts) or to their protonated original forms by treatment with an acid (in the case of the CO2 and CS2 adducts). Heating the ammonium dithiocarbamates leads to loss of H2S and permanent (covalent) thiourea cross-links between the polymer chains. The new materials adhere strongly to other surfaces and can be swelled to several times their original volumes by different liquids. The rheological, swelling, and physical properties of the new materials have been correlated with the structures of the original polymers to provide a comprehensive picture of how changes at the nanometric length scale are translated to macroscopic changes. At least for the polysiloxanes examined here, the properties of the adducts do not correlate with the molecular weights of the original polymers, but do with the frequency of amino groups. The results demonstrate a simple, new method to cross-link polysiloxanes (and, in principle, a wide range of other polymers), transforming them into materials with totally different and potentially commercially useful properties.
Synthesis and Characterization of Linear Polyisoprene Supramolecular Elastomers Based on Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:Supramolecular elastomers based on quaternary hydrogen bonding of ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) groups own special properties such as reversibility, self-healing, and good processability, which can be used in many special fields. In this paper, a novel type of linear polyisoprene supramolecular elastomer (LPSE) was prepared via anionic polymerization by deliberately introducing hydroxyl, isocyanate, and UPy groups into the ends. The formation of supramolecular structure showed significant effects on the microphase structures of LPSE, which was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Results showed that the introduction of UPy groups played a certain role in the improvement of the thermal stability, toughness, and tensile strength of the elastomer. Moreover, from self-healing tests, the hydrogen bonds of UPy showed dynamic characteristics which were different from covalent sacrificial bonds and exhibited the reassociation phenomenon. This study can not only extend our understanding of the toughening effect of strong hydrogen bonds, but also help us to rationally design new and tough elastomers.

Abstract:Tough and adhesive elastomers are facilely developed via one‐pot photopolymerization of aqueous precursor solutions with in situ formation of sulfonate‐Zr4+ coordination complexes followed by solvent evaporation. Mechanical robustness and self‐adhesion properties enable the elastomer films to devise versatile soft electronics with patterned liquid metal and microchips. Coordination bonds with a dynamic nature and wide‐spectrum bond energy have gained great popularity in use for fabricating tough soft materials. However, most existing coordination‐based elastomers are prepared through complicated procedures, usually involving elaborate synthesis of ligand‐containing monomers or polymers, ion diffusion to form coordination complexes, and removal of organic solvent during the synthesis, which are neither easy operation nor environmentally friendly. Here, a facile and effective strategy is demonstrated to fabricate tough metallosupramolecular elastomers by one‐pot polymerization of aqueous precursor solutions containing commercial agents, 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid, 2‐[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl acrylate, and Zr4+ ions. After solvent (i.e. water) evaporation, the obtained elastomers are transparent and extremely tough owing to the presence of sulfonate‐Zr4+ coordination complexes as physical crosslinks. Their mechanical properties are tunable over a wide spectrum by adjusting the composition of copolymers and the density of coordination bonds. This eco‐friendly strategy is further extended to various commercial monomers, manifesting good universality to toughen elastomers. Furthermore, the abundant functional groups of copolymers make the elastomers adhesive to various substrates including themselves, favoring applications such as interfacial adhesion and encapsulations. The easy fabrication, tunable mechanical properties, and adhesion ability endow the elastomers with great potential as the substrate of wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:The integration of tailorable mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and reprocessability is of significance in the design of sustainable polymer materials. Herein, side‐chain engineering is employed to fabricate cross‐linked supramolecular polymers with customizable mechanical properties. Three kinds of side chains, including methyl, 1‐ethyl pentyl, and 1‐hexyl nonyl, are used to modify the supramonomers. Through the copolymerization of low‐content supramonomers and covalent monomers, cross‐linked supramolecular polyureas with a wide range of mechanical properties spanning from rigid plastics to elastic materials are successfully constructed. Specifically, the Young's modulus can be adjusted from 525 to 128 MPa by tuning the side chain of supramonomers from methyl to 1‐hexyl nonyl. Meanwhile, the materials still retain exceptional recyclability and solvent resistance. Even after seven generations of recycling processes, the reprocessed cross‐linked supramolecular polyureas maintain over 95% of their original mechanical properties. It is anticipated that side‐chain engineering is a facile method for designing customized polymer materials to achieve both tailored mechanical properties and desirable functions.

Abstract:Combining different reversibly connecting mechanisms in a single system constitutes an efficient method to multi-functionalize dynamic polymer materials but normally requires complicated molecular designs. Herein we report a class of omni-dynamic silicone elastomers that can be directly prepared via simple anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) with bis(tetramethylammonium)oligodimethyl siloxanediolate (BTMASA) as the bifunctional initiator. The polymerization leads to the formation of telechelic polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) that would immediately undergo microphase separation to form elastic products. On the one hand, the tetramethylammonium siloxanolate (TMASA) terminals of the telechelic PDMS aggregate into charged domains serving as dissociative supramolecular crosslinking interactions in the products. On the other hand, the TMASA groups maintain their activities after polymerization and can catalyze associative chain exchange reactions among PDMS chains. Such a unique structure endows the silicone elastomers with good solubility in solvents like tetrahydrofuran (THF), appealing mechanical properties (elastic, stretchable, tough), and excellent degradability. In this system, the BTMASA plays multiple roles, including an initiator for AROP, a building block for supramolecular crosslinking, and a catalyst for chain exchange. We believe such a one-to-three concept will open a new direction for the design of novel dynamic polymer materials.

Abstract:Discrete and sequence-specific oligomers that combine molecular-level structural precision with macroscopic properties have attracted increasing attention in polymer and materials science. This study reports a facile method to selectively synthesize discrete and sequence-specific oligosiloxanes of up to 26-mer in a single flask on a gram scale by incorporating a siloxane building block into a B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 -catalyzed one-pot controlled iteration. The building blocks enable the incorporation of a well-defined oligosiloxane unit into an intermediate of controlled iteration in a single step, thereby significantly reducing the number of iterations. The four obtained 26-mers with molecular weights higher than 3400 bearing different Me 2 SiO/Ph 2 SiO sequences exhibit distinct thermal, structural, and mechanical properties, even though the substituents on the silicon atoms are simple methyl and phenyl groups. These results indicate that controlling the monomer ratio and sequence are both crucial in determining the physical properties of copolymerized polysiloxane (silicone) materials.

Abstract:Novel elastomers filled with different contents of silica through a two-step one-pot thiol-ene reaction were reported. Two monomers of poly (ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate and 1,6-hexanedithiol were used in the first step to synthesize a vinyl-terminated prepolymer at room temperature. In the second step, silica and chemical cross-linker trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) were directly added to the prepolymer in sequence and transparent elastomers were obtained in 30 min at room temperature. The cross-linking kinetics and mechanical properties in the presence of different contents of silica were investigated in detail by rheological, tensile and cyclic loading measurements. It was found that silica had a significant reinforcing effect on the mechanical properties of the elastomers. Our synthetic method is simple, solvent-free and energy- and cost-efficient. Our findings pave a new way to fabricate novel sulfur-containing elastomers using thiol-ene chemistry.

Abstract:A series of polysulfide-based polyureas with different siloxane contents were synthesized, and they were based on isophorone diisocyanate, liquid polysulfide oligomer, aminoethylaminopropyl poly(dimethyl siloxane) (AEAPS), and 2,5-diamino-3,6-dimethylmercapto-toluene. The mechanical and surface properties were investigated with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface contact angles, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and stress-strain analysis. Siloxane was enriched on the surfaces of these elastomers, and the tensile properties of the elastomers did not change markedly with the AEAPS modification. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
A Self-Healing Polysiloxane Elastomer Based on Siloxane Equilibration Synthesized Through Amino-Ene Michael Addition Reaction

Abstract:A facile approach to synthesize silicone elastomers with good mechanical properties as well as high self-healing efficiency is reported in the present research. The silicone elastomer is synthesized through amino-ene Michael addition reaction, with amino groups from aminopropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane and acrylate groups from multifunctional acrylate monomer. Meanwhile, basic catalyst tetramethylammonium hydroxide is added into the elastomer to derive a dynamically crosslinked network. Tensile strength and break elongation of the synthesized elastomers are 1.08 +/- 0.06 MPa and 206.10 +/- 9.55%, respectively, indicating good mechanical properties of the elastomers. The fractured samples can recover 91% of their original strength after healing at 105 degrees C for 24 h. Moreover, the silicone elastomer in this work is recyclable due to the dynamic siloxane equilibration reaction.
