Abstract:Considering the combination of the advantages of both the acceptor-donor-acceptor and perylene diimide type acceptors, three new cross-conjugated small molecule non-fullerene acceptors were rationally designed and synthesized. Their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit highly extended absorption spectra ranging from 300 to 700 nm as well as appropriate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels compared with those of the general acceptors based on perylene diimide. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells based on the resultant acceptors were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTB7-Th:acceptor/PFN-Br/Ag configuration. Benefiting from efficient exciton dissociation, reduced bimolecular recombination, and enhanced and balanced electron mobility, the device-based PDIBDT-IT exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% with a high short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.60 mA/cm(2), a fill factor (FF) of 60.45%, and an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.74 V, which was higher than those of PDIBDT-RDN and PDIBDT-ITF. The underlying mechanism was carefully studied and discussed. The extended absorption of PDIBDT-IT contributes to its relatively high PCE; however, the performance will be potentially improved by ehnancing the electron mobility of these acceptors. Our results provide an efficient cross-conjugated approach and great flexibility in fine-tuning physicochemical properties, including absorption spectra and energy levels of the acceptors toward high-performance solar cells.

Abstract:Modifying the end groups of nonfullerene acceptors presents a viable strategy for enhancing the efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs). This study synthesized three nonfullerene acceptors-BO-ICTz, BO-ICTzTh, and BO-ICTh-by incorporating aromatic heterocycle substitutions into the end group. These substitutions included an electron-donating thiophene ring, an electron-withdrawing thiazole ring, and a combination of both asymmetric rings. BO-ICTh, exhibiting a stronger conjugation effect, exhibited robust and broad absorption spectra, along with elevated energy levels. When blended with the polymer donor JD40-BDD20, the optimized BO-ICTh-based device achieved a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.25%, surpassing devices based on BO-ICTz and BO-ICTzTh. Further analysis of energy loss, charge generation, recombination, and morphology demonstrated that incorporating the aromatic heterocycle ring into the end group presents as a promising strategy for developing nonfullerene acceptors, thereby enhancing the performance of organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Compared to the most-studied non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with linear skeletons, multi-dimensional NFAs with largely conjugated extension in multiple directions may contribute to more efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) due to the potentially improved absorptions, molecular packings and charge transport dynamics. Herein, a conjugated-skeleton connection mode assembled by central units of NFAs is developed, extending conventionally linear molecular skeletons towards three-dimension (3D). The afforded 3D NFAs with specific A-D-A architectures in two directions demonstrate extremely low reorganization energies, fibrillar network film morphologies, improved charge transport behaviors and enhanced stability. After molecular geometry control by elaborately fluorine-induced noncovalently conformational locks, an exciting efficiency of 17.05% is achieved by CH8-1-based binary bulk-heterojunction OSCs, which has been the highest value afforded by multi-dimensional acceptors thus far. Our success in constructing efficient 3D NFAs through easily central unit connection blazes a new trail in further molecular structural optimization on the state-of-the-art NFAs.

Abstract:Two spirobifluorene (SF)-functioned 3D nonfullerene electron acceptors-SF-OR and SF-ORCN-that user hodanine and 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)rhodanine as the terminal units, respectively, were designed and synthesized. These new acceptor materials show reversible electrochemical reduction and a high optical absorption coefficient, which are critical in device operation. Electronic and structural characterizations reveal that the inclusion of cyano group on rhodanine improve the electron accepting ability at the sacrifice of structure order, since the conjugated backbone becomes less planar, which prohibits cofacial stacking. SF-OR and SF-ORCN show good photovoltaic performances when paired with a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) donor, and the optimized devices give power conversion efficiencies of 4.66% and 4.48%, respectively. These values are higher than that of fullerene acceptor-based control devices (3.55%), which are also among the best in small molecular nonfullerene acceptor organic solar cells based on P3HT.

Abstract:Two acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type non-fullerene acceptors (namely WH1 and WH7) containing the oxindole-based bridge are designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells(PSCs) applications. The bridge unit is introduced through a precursor (6-bromo-1-octylindoline-2, 3-dione) that contains both bromine and carbonyl and provides the feasibility of the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction and the Knoevenagel condensation, respectively. This facile synthetic approach exhibits the potential to gain high performance non-fullerene acceptors through extending π-conjugated backbone with strong light-absorbing building blocks. The synthesis and properties of WH1 and WH7 are demonstrated with different endcap units, then PSCs are fabricated using PBDB-T:WH1 and PBDB-T:WH7 as the active layers, and attain an average power conversion efficiency ( PCE) of 2.58％ and 6.24％, respectively. Further device physics studies afford the deep insight of structure variation influence on the device performance. This work provides a facile non-fullerene acceptor design strategy and shows how structure variations impact the PSC performance.

Abstract:The emergence of Y-series non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has inspired the development of various materials for high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, a novel asymmetric NFA named Y6-1OBO bearing branched alkyl and alkoxy side chains was designed and synthesized. When diiodomethane was selected as the solvent additive, the Y6-1OBO-based devices achieved an efficiency of 18.02% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.93 V and a fill factor of 77.1%, which is much higher than that of Y6-1O-based devices (16.81%). The effects of solvent additives were also systematically investigated, and the results demonstrate that the selective solubility to NFA of different additives can significantly affect the film morphology. This work not only provides a new Y-series NFA but also highlights the choice of solvent additives according to the properties of materials in the active layer for the future optimization of OSCs.

Abstract:Molecular design of non-fullerene acceptors is of vital importance for high-efficiency organic solar cells. The branched alkyl chain modification is often regarded as a counter-intuitive approach, as it may introduce an undesirable steric hindrance that reduces charge transport in non-fullerene acceptors. Here we show the design and synthesis of a highly efficient non-fullerene acceptor family by substituting the beta position of the thiophene unit on a Y6-based dithienothiophen[3,2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole core with branched alkyl chains. It was found that such a modification to a different alkyl chain length could completely change the molecular packing behaviour of non-fullerene acceptors, leading to improved structural order and charge transport in thin films. An unprecedented efficiency of 18.32% (certified value of 17.9%) with a fill factor of 81.5% is achieved for single-junction organic solar cells. This work reveals the importance of the branched alkyl chain topology in tuning the molecular packing and blend morphology, which leads to improved organic photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:The bulk-heterojunction blend of an electron donor and an electron acceptor material is the key component in a solution-processed organic photovoltaic device. In the past decades, a p-type conjugated polymer and an n-type fullerene derivative have been the most commonly used electron donor and electron acceptor, respectively. While most advances of the device performance come from the design of new polymer donors, fullerene derivatives have almost been exclusively used as electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics. Recently, nonfullerene acceptor materials, particularly small molecules and oligomers, have emerged as a promising alternative to replace fullerene derivatives. Compared to fullerenes, these new acceptors are generally synthesized from diversified, low-cost routes based on building block materials with extraordinary chemical, thermal, and photostability. The facile functionalization of these molecules affords excellent tunability to their optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. Within the past five years, there have been over 100 nonfullerene acceptor molecules synthesized, and the power conversion efficiency of nonfullerene organic solar cells has increased dramatically, from similar to 2% in 2012 to >13% in 2017. This review summarizes this progress, aiming to describe the molecular design strategy, to provide insight into the structure-property relationship, and to highlight the challenges the field is facing, with emphasis placed on most recent nonfullerene acceptors that demonstrated top-of-the-line photovoltaic performances. We also provide perspectives from a device point of view, wherein topics including ternary blend device, multijunction device, device stability, active layer morphology, and device physics are discussed.
Fine-Tuning the Dipole Moment of Asymmetric Non-Fullerene Acceptors Enabling Efficient and Stable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Modifying molecular conjugation has been demonstrated as an effective strategy to enhance the photovoltaic performance of the non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (SMAs), which would regulate the molecular packing and nanoscale morphology in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, two novel SMAs PTIC-4Cl and PT2IC-4Cl are designed and synthesized by expanding the core unit of TB-4Cl in one or two directions. The effects of how to expand the conjugation length on the absorption property, energy levels, dipole moment, and solubility are studied via theoretical calculation and experiments. Compared to PT2IC-4Cl, PTIC-4Cl with a more asymmetric structure exhibits the larger dipole moment and enhanced intermolecular packing. The PTIC-4Cl-based OSCs exhibit a favorable morphology and balanced charge transport, thereby leading to the highest power conversion efficiencies. In addition, PTIC-4Cl-based devices show outstanding thermal and air stability. Abstract:Three noncovalently fused-ring electron acceptors (FOC6-IC, FOC6-FIC, and FOC2C6-2FIC) are synthesized. Single crystals of FOC6-IC and FOC2C6-2FIC are prepared, and structure analyses reveal that the molecular backbone can be planarized via the formation of the intramolecular noncovalent interactions. These acceptor molecules can be packed closely in the solid state via π-π stacking and static interactions between the central phenylene unit and the terminal group with a distance of 3.3-3.4 Å. Besides, multiple intermolecular noncovalent interactions can be observed in the single crystal structure of the fluorinated acceptor FOC2C6-2FIC, which help increase the crystallinity of acceptors and the charge mobility of the blends. Photovoltaic devices based on FOC2C6-2FIC give a power conversion efficiency of 12.36%, higher than 12.08% for FOC6-FIC and 10.80% for FOC6-IC.
