Abstract:Exploring active, stable, earth-abundant, low-cost, and high-efficiency electrocatalysts is highly desired for large-scale industrial applications toward the low-carbon economy. In this study, we apply a versatile selenizing technology to synthesize Se-enriched Co1-xFexSe2 catalysts on nickel foams for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and disclose the relationship between the electronic structures of Co1-xFexSe2 (via regulating the atom ratio of Co/Fe) and their OER performance. Owing to the fact that the electron configuration of the Co1-xFexSe2 compounds can be tuned by the incorporated Fe species (electron transfer and lattice distortion), the catalytic activity can be adjusted according to the Co/Fe ratios in the catalyst. Moreover, the morphology of Co1-xFexSe2 is also verified to strongly depend on the Co/Fe ratios, and the thinner Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets are obtained upon selenization treatment, in which it allows more active sites to be exposed to the electrolyte, in turn promoting the OER performance. The Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets not only exhibit superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1 but also possess ultrahigh durability with a dinky degeneration of 4.4% even after 72 h fierce water oxidation test in alkaline solution, which outperforms the commercial RuO2 catalyst. As expected, the Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets have shown great prospects for practical applications toward water oxidation.
In situ construction of N-doped amorphous CoFe selenites toward efficient electrocatalytic water oxidation

Abstract:The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered as a major bottleneck for water splitting. It is critical to search for high performance of OER catalysts with different chemical compositions and structures. Herein, we report a new CoFe selenite with NH4+ cation, further, an amorphous N-doped CoFe selenite can be obtained by an environmentally friendly in situ-method, further, by adjusting the ratio of Co and Fe and calcination temperature, the optimal electrocatalyst shows the lowest overpotential of 242 mV at 10 mA cm−2 on glassy carbon and a small Tafel slope of 59.1 mV dec−1, respectively, besides, this catalyst maintains the current density of 10 mA/cm2 for at least 24 h when applying overpotential of 242 mV. N-doping into this CoFe selenites can tailor its electronic structure, moreover, its mesoporous structure favors the mass transfer, electrolyte diffusion and O2 release, in addition, the electrochemical oxidation processes can provide more active sites due to the surface modification of this CoFe selenites, consequently, exhibiting superior OER performance. This study provides an effective strategy to explore highly active and durable electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable transition bimetallic chalcogenides to replace precious metal electrocatalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains an ongoing challenge. Here, a bimetallic NiFe selenide catalyst synthesized by facile selenization of NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticle precursors is reported for efficient OER in alkaline solutions. Through two-step electrodeposition and post-thermal pyrolytic selenization, mixed NiFe selenide supported by carbon fiber paper (NiFe-Se/CFP) can be facilely prepared. A low overpotential of 281 mV is required by the NiFe-Se/CFP electrode to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm–2; additionally, an accelerated electron-transfer kinetics is obtained with a Tafel slope of 40.93 mV dec–1 in 1 M KOH solution. The electrocatalytic current density shows negligible loss during 20 h continuous electrolysis, suggesting good stability during long-term alkaline OER. Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction is a momentous part of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as rechargeable metal–air batteries. It is particularly urgent to develop low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions. As a potential substitute for noble metal electrocatalysts, transition metal selenides still prove challenging in improving the activity of oxygen evolution reaction and research into reaction intermediates. In this study, a simple one-step solvothermal method was used to prepare a polymetallic compound carbon matrix composite (Co9Se8/Ni3Se4/Fe3O4@C) with a multilayered nanosheets structure. It exhibited good OER activity in an alkaline electrolyte solution, with an overpotential of 268 mV at 10 mA/cm2. In addition, this catalyst also showed excellent performance in the 24 h stability test. The composite presents a multi-layer sheet structure, which effectively improves the contact between the active site and the electrolyte. The selenide formed by Ni and Co has a synergistic effect, and Fe3O4 and Co9Se8 form a heterojunction structure which can effectively improve the reaction activity by initiating the electronic coupling effect through the interface modification. In addition, carbon quantum dots have rich heteroatoms and electron transferability, which improves the electrochemical properties of the composites. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts utilizing the multi-metal synergistic effect.

Abstract:Amorphous transition‐metal based materials with disordered structure are very desirable in the field of sustainable energy devices and technologies such as water‐splitting and secondary batteries due to their inherent properties of anisotropy and defects. To date, it is very urgent to explore new methods to prepare amorphous electrocatalysts. Herein, we use a simple approach to construct amorphous Co‐based selenite electrocatalyst by a mechanical ball milling for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Due to its amorphous structure as well as more active species, the obtained amorphous cobalt selenite C 4 S‐12h material on the glassy carbon electrode shows superior electrochemical performance with a low overpotential of 255 mV to drive 10 mA cm ‐2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, this catalyst also has an excellent intrinsic activity (high mass activity of 162.0 A g ‐1 and TOF of 0.063 s ‐1 at the overpotential of 350 mV) and remarkable long‐term stability (at least 32 hrs at a current density of 10 mA cm ‐2 ). This study offers a simple and environmentally‐friendly method to construct high efficient electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

Abstract:Metal sulfides exhibit good catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their distinctive electronic and structural properties; however, their inadequate electrical conductivity hinders electron transfer, while easy agglomeration obstructs active sites. Herein, a dual molten salt etching strategy and subsequent sulfidation are employed to anchor CoS/FeS 2 heterojunction nanosheets onto an electrically conductive MXene (MXene@CoS/FeS 2 ) for efficient OER. The strong electronic interaction between CoS and FeS 2 , in conjunction with the conductive MXene, facilitates rapid charge transfer, while the heterostructured nanosheets on the MXene substrate expose abundant catalytic active sites. Dut to its delicate nanostructure, the MXene@CoS/FeS 2 composite demonstrates an exceptionally low overpotential (278 mV achieved at 10 mA cm −2 ) and remarkable stability (over 40 h). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the electron transfer at the CoS/FeS 2 interface effectively reduces the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) for MXene@CoS/FeS 2 . Additionally, the simple and straightforward preparation process eliminates the need for HF, enabling efficient and large-scale catalyst production while ensuring safety and environmental friendliness. Overall, the designed MXene@CoS/FeS 2 holds great promise as an OER catalyst.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts to speed up the slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is both an opportunity and a challenge. Herein, we present a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived highly active OER catalyst (NiFe-MOF-S@CNT) composed of Fe/NiS heterostructure-embedded nanosheets interconnected by carbon nanotubes network via a direct two-step solvothermal method. The optimized NiFe-MOF-S@CNT catalyst demonstrates outstanding OER activity: it requires an ultralow overpotential of 237 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 ( η 10 ) with a small Tafel slope of 42.3 mV/dec, surpassing the commercial RuO 2 ( η 10 = 295 mV) and most other transition metal catalysts. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and large specific surface area, the MOF-derived NiFe-MOF-S@CNT nanosheets facilitate enhancing mass transfer and electrolyte penetration. Additionally, the incorporation of Fe/NiS heterostructures within the nanosheets, along with carbon nanotubes, generates interfacial effects, promoting electronic interactions and exposing more active sites, thus significantly boosting OER activity. The backbone of carbon nanotubes not only enhances conductivity but also prevents agglomeration of the metal phase, ensuring uniform dispersion of active sites. This work offers a cost-effective and green approach for synthesizing highly efficient transition metal-based sulfides and also paves the way for advancing OER electrocatalysis for various energy applications.

Abstract:It is of significant importance and a great challenge to explore new electrocatalysts with highly activity and durability, above all, high mass activity and rapid kinetics, for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to the demand for clean energy. In this work, we prepared a three-dimensional (3D) CoFe-based zemannite-type selenite (KCFS) via in situ transformation of CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) as both the precursor and template. The as-prepared CoFe-selenite affords low overpotential in 1.0 M KOH on glass carbon electrode (η@10 mA cm−2 = 274 mV) with Tafel slope of 45.6 mV dec−1, indicating rapid kinetics, in addition, keeps high current density around 10 mA/cm2 at least 50 h when applied voltage of 1.51 V. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of KCFS could be mainly attributed to its unique zeolite structure and compositions with bimetallic centres and SeO3 oxyanion, besides, it exhibits nanoellipsoid rough-surface morphology and hierarchical pores, which is beneficial to the enhanced exposure of the active sites, as well as the mass/charge transport and the electrolyte diffusion.

Abstract:The extremely large surface area offered by quasi-two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures is a great advantage for catalytic applications. While bimetallic materials have been discovered as a group of promising catalysts for electrochemical water splitting, a facile and reliable synthesis approach toward 2D morphology to fully release its electrochemical catalytic potential is still lacking. In this work, bimetallic Co–Mo–O ultrathin nanosheets were synthesized by ionic layer epitaxy with controlled composition ratio. The Co–Mo–O nanosheets exhibited a quadrangle shape with a uniform thickness of ∼2.5 nm. This 2D morphology largely enriched the surface catalytic active site ratio. Particularly, nanosheets with 2:1 Co-to-Mo ratio showed a substantially enhanced OER catalytic activity with a 3 orders of magnitude higher mass activity compared to benchmark IrO2 and RuO2 in an alkaline environment. Self-Reconstruction of Fe-Doped Co-Metal-Organic Frameworks Boosted Electrocatalytic Performance for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Rational design of facile and low-cost efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to solve the energy crisis. Benefiting from in situ self-reconstruction from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to (oxy)hydroxides in alkaline electrolytes, MOFs have become alternative OER catalysts. Thus, Fe-doped Co-MOF nanosheets (Co-MOF/Fe) were prepared and utilized straightforwardly as OER electrocatalysts. CoFe-layered bimetallic hydroxides (CoFe-LDHs) with abundant active sites are obtained from in situ conversion of Co-MOF/Fe after etching by the KOH electrolyte, which are generally actual active species. Meanwhile, the introduction of Fe ions will also produce a synergistic effect that greatly improves the electrocatalytic OER performance. The optimized catalyst (Co-MOF/Fe10) shows exceptional OER activity (η10 = 260 mV) and excellent durability over 50 h. The outstanding OER performance of Co-MOF/Fe10 can also be reflected in the two-electrode hydrolyzer (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). This study offers a pathway to probe the catalytic mechanism of MOFs and the rational construction of efficient MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:The development of noble-metal-free highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is crucial for electrochemical energy technology but still challenging. Herein, ultrafine cobalt-iron bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanosheets are synthesized using two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursor. The 2D morphology of the carbon matrix and the ultrafine character of Co1-xFexP nanoparticles make contributions to OER catalysis. By optimizing the molar ratio of Co/Fe atoms in MOFs, a series of Co1-xFexP/C catalysts are prepared. Among them, Co0.7Fe0.3P/C shows the best OER performance with an overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and an ultralow Tafel slope of 27 mV dec-1 in an alkaline electrolyte. Moderate iron doping preserves the catalytically active sites and improves the ability to be oxidized of the surface of Co1-xFexP nanoparticles, and thus enhances the OER activity. Our finding paves the way to the rational design of the morphology and chemical composition of OER catalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides (TMSes) have attracted increasing attention for electrocatalysts due to fascinating properties, such as low cost, intrinsic metallic properties, and high catalytic activities. In addition, bimetallic selenides exhibit more excellent performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process than monometallic selenides via synergistic effect. Herein, we synthesized Fe doped NiSe 2 on carbon cloth (CC) employed as electrodes for boosting OER by a facile two-step hydrothermal method. These electrodes display excellent electrocatalytic activity for OER in alkaline electrolytes, in which Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 Se 2 /CC is evidenced by the overpotential of 257 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and Tafel slope of 43 mV dec −1 . The synthesized three-dimensional structure with the aid of carbon cloth helps for the mass and charge transfer. Furthermore, Fe doping not only induces stronger electron interaction but tunes electronic structure, thus improving the OER performance. After a long-term OER process, Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 Se 2 transforms into NiFe-based (oxy)hydroxides, which may serve as "real" active phase. Doping engineering strategy makes TMSes manifest a superb performance for OER and expands ways for designing effective OER electrodes.

Abstract:Catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are pivotal to the scalable storage of sustainable energy by means of converting water to oxygen and hydrogen fuel. Designing efficient electrocatalysis combining the features of excellent electrical conductivity, abundant active surface, and structural stability remains a critical challenge. Here, we report the rational design and controlled synthesis of metallic transition metal selenide NiCo2Se4-based holey nanosheets as a highly efficient and robust OER electrocatalyst. Benefiting from synergistic effects of metallic nature, heteroatom doping, and holey nanoarchitecture, NiCo2Se4 holey nanosheets exhibit greatly enhanced kinetics and improved cycling stability for OER. When further employed as an alkaline electrolyzer, the NiCo2Se4 holey nanosheet electrocatalyst enables a high-performing overall water splitting with a low applied external potential of 1.68 V at 10 mA cm-2. This work not only represents a promising strategy to design the efficient and robust OER catalysts but also provides fundamental insights into the structure-property-performance relationship of transition metal selenide-based electrocatalytic materials.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Designing and constructing transition metal sulfides (TMSs) as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts has been attracting increasing attention. Interface engineering can effectively modify the active sites and promote electron transfer, resulting in improvement of electrocatalytic performance. Here, freestanding heterogeneous CoS2/CoS nanosheets are prepared via a simple one‐step sintering process from a kind of novel hierarchical tremella‐like metal–organic framework (MOF). The formation mechanism of the unique MOF and the heterojunctions between CoS2 and CoS is analyzed. Consequently, the prepared cost‐effective OER electrocatalyst achieves satisfying electrocatalytic efficiencies with a diminutive overpotential of 269 mV at 10 mA cm−2 current density, a small Tafel slope of 52 mV dec−1, and good stability in alkaline solution comparable to RuO2 counterparts. This work opens up a new method for constructing 2D electrocatalysts containing catalytic interfaces with boosted OER performance. </section>

Abstract:Exploiting the inexpensive and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial for improving the efficiency of electrocatalytic water splitting (EWS), since the slow 4-electron OER process is a rate-limiting step in EWS. Herein, we prepared the NiFe(OH)x/Fe0.2Co-Se complexes on carbon paper (CP) via an easy two-step electrochemical deposition strategy. By varying the doping amount of Fe and the deposition time of Fe0.2Co-Se, the OER property of NiFe(OH)x/Fe0.2Co-Se/CP was optimized to the best: only requiring low overpotentials of 243 and 277 mV at the current density of 20 and 100 mA/cm2 (j20 and j100) and a small Tafel slope of 36.8 mV/dec, along with a terrific long-term durability in 1 M KOH. According to the experimental results, the rich exposed active sites, improved intrinsic site activity and enhanced electrical conductivity lead to the superior OER performance. Our work will provide some inspiration for designing other metal selenide/hydroxide heterostructures for other energy conversion or storage applications.

Synergistic Effect of Bimetallic Sulfide Synthesized by a Simple Solvothermal Method for High-Efficiency Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The energy consumption of water electrolysis mainly comes from anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of its sluggish four-electron transport processes. It is significant to fabricate an efficient OER electrocatalyst for water electrolysis. In this work, bimetallic sulfide nanoparticles (FeNiSs) are prepared by a facile solvothermal method as an OER catalyst. Benefiting from its small particle size and synergistic effect of iron and nickel, this transition-metal sulfide has an excellent catalytic performance for OER. It only needs overpotentials of 223 and 286 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2 with an extremely low load of 0.21 mg cm–2 on noble electrode glassy carbon, respectively. Furthermore, the Tafel slope of 38.2 mV dec–1 is also extremely low, which means its fast electron transport during OER. Also, it could work as an OER electrode for 100 h without obvious degeneration, which indicates the superb durability. In addition, this facile solvothermal method and synergistic effect can enlighten researchers to explore and develop other efficient and robust electrocatalysts for energy conversions.

Abstract:Developing efficient non-noble metal catalysts is crucial for promoting the electrochemical production of oxygen from water. In this work, a flower-like FeS/Co 3 S 4 heterostructure composite on carbon cloth can be fabricated with a simple sulfurization method. As-prepared FeS/Co 3 S 4 composite shows excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a low overpotential of 252 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 58 mV dec −1 , better than the FeS and Co 3 S 4 electrodes. In addition, the FeS/Co 3 S 4 composite displays outstanding structural stability with any decay over long-time testing. The improved OER catalytic performance of FeS/Co 3 S 4 composite is ascribed to the increased specific surface area and formation of FeS/Co 3 S 4 heterojunction. Besides, theoretical calculation results also show that the FeS/Co 3 S 4 heterojunction possesses a stronger adsorption ability to ∗OH, which is more favorable to the OER than the single FeS and Co 3 S 4 counterpart. Our work has paved a new way of exploring high-efficient catalysts for OER.
