Abstract:The synthesis of metal nanostructures with plasmon wavelengths beyond ∼1000 nm is strongly desired, especially for those with small sizes. Herein we report on a AgPd-tipping process on Au nanobipyramids with the resultant red plasmon shifts reaching up to ∼900 nm. The large red plasmon shifts are ascribed to the deposition of the metal at the tips of Au nanobipyramids, which is verified by electrodynamic simulations. The method has been successfully applied to Au nanobipyramids and nanorods with different longitudinal dipolar plasmon wavelengths, demonstrating that the plasmon wavelengths of these Au nanocrystals can be extended to the entire near-infrared region. Pt can also induce the tipping on Au nanobipyramids and nanorods to realize red plasmon shifts, suggesting the generality of our approach. We have further shown that the metal-tipped Au nanobipyramids possess a high photothermal conversion efficiency and good photothermal therapy performance. This study opens up a route to the construction of Au nanostructures with plasmon resonance in a broad spectral region for plasmon-enabled technological applications.

Abstract:Current methods for tuning the plasmonic properties of metallic nanoparticles typically rely on alternating the morphology (i.e., size and/or shape) of nanoparticles. The variation of morphology of plasmonic nanoparticles oftentimes impairs their performance in certain applications. In this study, we report an effective approach based on the control of internal structure to engineer morphology-invariant nanoparticles with tunable plasmonic properties. Specifically, these nanoparticles were prepared through selective growth of Ag on the inner surfaces of preformed Ag-Au alloyed nanocages as the seeds to form Ag@(Ag-Au) shell@shell nanocages. Plasmonic properties of the Ag@(Ag-Au) nanocages can be conveniently and effectively tuned by varying the amount of Ag deposited on the inner surfaces, during which the overall morphology of the nanocages remains unchanged. To demonstrate the potential applications of the Ag@(Ag-Au) nanocages, they were applied to colorimetric sensing of human carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) that achieved low detection limits. This work provides a meaningful concept to design and craft plasmonic nanoparticles.

Abstract:A layer-by-layer assembly technique was developed to synthesize the hybrid nanostructures of Au nanocrystals with diameter of about 5nm and ZnO nanorods via the electrostatic interaction. In comparison with ZnO nanorods, the Au–ZnO hybrid nanostructures exhibited the broadened and red-shifted surface plasmon band, enhanced band gap emission, and suppressed defect emission due to the strong interfacial coupling between Au and ZnO. Moreover, the band gap emission of the Au–ZnO hybrid nanostructures is controllably blue-shifted with decreasing distance between the Au nanocrystals and ZnO nanorods tuned by the amount of the polyelectrolyte layers due to the exciton and plasmon interactions.

Abstract:In this paper, Ag nanorods (AgNRs) with different aspect ratios (ARs) were prepared by a seed-mediated fast growth approach. The possible growth mechanism of Ag nanostructures was proposed. With a strong interaction between CTAB and Ag seeds, the reduced Ag atoms agglomerated and attached to the performed Ag nanoparticles, where CTAB molecule layer plays a role of rod-like micelles template, leading to one dimensional growth of Ag atoms into AgNRs. The influences of the reaction conditions were discussed on the yield of AgNRs. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AgNRs was studied by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The simulated results indicate that the transverse surface plasmon resonance (SPRT) has no obvious shifting, whereas the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (SPRL) shows a significant redshift with the increase of AR of AgNRs, which agrees well with the experimental variation trend. It is also found that the absorption and scattering of AgNRs are stronger than that of Au nanorods (AuNRs), which is in accordance with the Raman signal enhancement by AgNRs compared with that of AuNRs, indicating that AgNR is a promising candidate in bio-molecular detection.

Abstract:Smooth Ag substrate achieved in-situ conversion to form nanoporous architecture that is assembled by highly dispersed nanoparticles (NPs) with a mean size of 21.88 nm by applying a redox potential signal in an alkaline solution with an appropriate pH range. The detailed phase constitution and microstructure evolution process of the Ag substrate induced by the electrochemical redox tuning approach were systemically investigated. Under the action of controllable redox potentials, the smooth Ag substrate is firstly electrochemically oxidized to form Ag2O with an expansion on the unit volume, followed by electrochemical reduction back to metallic Ag, causing the cell volume to shrink. The expansion and contraction of the unit volume during the highly reversible electrochemical process lead to in-situ formation of the highly porous Ag architectures. The fabricated Ag NPs-packed electrode exhibits as an excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance, and the measured Raman spectrum of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) reaches a detection limit of 5.44×10−10 mol/L.

Abstract:A feasible way is developed to prepare Au core/Au-Ag alloy shell nanorods (Au@Au(x)Ag(1-x) NRs) based on co-reduction of gold and silver ions under the guidance of Au NRs templates. Alloy nanorods with a wide composition range (x tunable from 0 to 1) are obtained. The Ag+/Au3+ ratios are found to affect the detailed morphology of the endcaps, which is responsible for the abnormal red-shift of localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mode. In consensus with theoretical prediction, dielectric sensitivity of the alloy NRs is mainly determined by the maximum of the LSPR band. Due to the change in electron structure, the alloy shells exhibit lower SERS activities than pure Ag shell.

Abstract:Through anisotropic Ag overgrowth on the surface of Au nanobipyramids（Au NBPs）, high-purity and sizecontrolled Ag nanorods（Au/Ag NRs） are obtained by a simplified purification process. The diameters of the Au/Ag NRs are determined by the size of the as-prepared Au NBPs, and the lengths of the Au/Ag NRs are tunable using different amounts of Ag precursor in the growth solution. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering（SERS） studies using Rhodamine-6G（R6G） as a test molecule indicate that the Au/Ag NRs have excellent sensing potential. The tunable optical properties and strong electromagnetic effect of the Au/Ag NRs, along with their superior SERS signal enhancement, show that Au/Ag NRs are promising for further applications in plasmon sensing and biomolecular detection.

Abstract:Nanorings made of noble metals such as Au and Ag have attracted particular interest in plasmonic properties since they allow remarkable tunability of plasmon resonance wavelengths associated with their unique structural features. Unfortunately, most of the syntheses for Au nanorings involve complex procedures and/ or require highly specialized and expensive facilities. Here, we report a seed-mediated approach for selective deposition of Au nanorings on the periphery of Pd seeds with the structure of an ultrathin nanosheet through the island growth mode. In combination with selective etching of Pd nanosheets, Au nanorings are eventually produced. We can control the outer diameter and wall thickness of the nanorings by simply varying the size of the Pd nanosheets and reaction time. By taking the advantage of this size controllability, the nanorings show tunable surface plasmonic properties in the near infrared (NIR) region arising from both the in-plane dipole and face resonance modes. Owing to their good surface plasmonic properties, the nanorings show substantially enhanced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance for rhodamine 6G, and are therefore confirmed as good SERS substrates to detect trace amounts of molecules.

Abstract:Limited success has been achieved in preparing nanorods of silver with uniform sizes and tunable localized surface plasmon resonances. Also, the practical applications of silver nanostructures have been hindered by their poor chemical stability in a corrosive environment. Here we address these issues by converting Au@Ag core/shell nanorods into fully alloyed ones through controlled high-temperature annealing in confined spaces. Compared with their core/shell counterparts, the obtained alloy nanorods demonstrated significantly enhanced stability toward oxidative etching. We also systematically investigated their novel plasmonic properties, and revealed that the band positions of both longitudinal and transverse modes can be readily tuned by either manipulating the Ag/Au ratio or starting with gold cores of different aspect ratios. Moreover, we have achieved widely adjusted peak intensity ratios between the transverse and longitudinal bands from 0.14 to 1.22, which is impossible for nonalloyed nanorods. The alloy nanorods developed in this work are believed to find great uses in fundamental spectroscopic studies as well as many attractive plasmonic applications.
Switching the Plasmon Coupling of Fractional Hollow AuAg Nanobox by Asymmetrical Etching of the Inner Ag Core

Abstract:Herein, a sub-40 nm fractional hollow AuAg nanobox is asymmetrically filled with Ag atoms inside the nanobox until it is gradually transformed into a solid AuAg nanobox, and the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method is applied to calculate the corresponding extinction spectra in this process. It is observed that the height of the inner Ag core could cause a non-monotonous shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band, which first has a linear blue shift and then a near-exponential red shift, indicating that the height of the inner Ag core could be presented as a key factor to tune the core-dependent non-monotonous SPR shift. A local electric field analysis reveals that the non-monotonous SPR shift may be attributed to the switching of plasmon coupling, then inducing the SPR properties of nanoshell and dimer, respectively. Furthermore, we find that the refractive index of both the dielectric cavity and ambient medium could tune the switching threshold of the Ag core height corresponding to the plasmon coupling. It is also revealed that the switching of plasmon coupling could significantly affect the local electric field intensity and its distribution. Consequently, we believe that the asymmetrical Ag core could increase the tunability of an SPR shift and change the local electric field distribution, which provides the potential for SPR-based biosensing and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications.
Composition-Dependent Plasmon Shift in Au−Ag Alloy Nanotubes: Effect of Local Field Distribution

Abstract:The composition-controlled shift of the transverse surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in Au-Ag alloy nanotubes was theoretically studied by using the Drude model and quasi-static approximation. Increasing the gold composition leads to the red shift of both low- and high-energy SPR. The antisymmetric plasmon mode is more sensitive to the change in gold composition. The physical origin based on local electric field distribution in the transverse section plane was investigated to illuminate the effect of gold composition on the shift of the SPR. The local field corresponding to antisymmetric coupling is polarized parallel to the incident polarization. Thus, the thin shell enhances the electron scattering and lowers the plasmon energy, which in turn results in an intense red shift of the SPR.
Size and Dielectric-Environment Dependence of Transversal Resonance Modes of Localized Surface Plasmons in Silver Nanorods

Abstract:Tuning transversal resonance modes of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) by the size and the ambient dielectric medium of Ag nanorods is presented. It is found that the resonance wavelength and intensity of the transversal modes of LSPs are closely related to the dimensions of the Ag nanorods embedded in anodic aluminum oxide membranes. The transversal resonance peak exhibits obvious redshifts from 365 to 396 nm with increasing nanorod diameter from 40 to 80 nm, and the resonance intensity remarkably enhances with increasing nanorod diameter. In addition, it is observed that the transversal resonance modes of LSPs in Ag nanorods are strongly sensitive to their surrounding dielectric medium such as water, ethanol, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and the transversal resonance peak distinctly redshifts from 422 to 467 nm when the refractive index of the dielectric medium increases from 1.342 to 1.435. As a result, a refractive index sensitivity of up to 484 nm/RIU can be achieved based on the transversal resonance modes. The transverse resonance modes of LSPs in the Ag nanorods can be used for sensitive quantification of chemical and biological species.

Abstract:We present the synthesis and analysis of silica-coated Au/Ag bimetallic nanorods with controlled surface plasmon bands. Depending on the thickness of Ag shell deposited on the Au nanorod surface, there is a blue-shift on the longitudinal surface plasmon band of Au nanorods, which can be expressed by an approximate formula derived from the absorption profile of light in Ag films using finite difference time domain simulations. The subsequent coating of silica shell not only enhances the stability of the Au/Ag bimetallic nanorods but also provides a mesoporous host for optically active species. Minute red-shifts of the longitudinal resonance mode, induced by stepwise increased silica shell volumes, are shown. Application as carrier for fluorescent rhodamine B molecules is demonstrated by photoluminescence analysis. On the single-particle level, dark field microscopy of Au/Ag-silica nanorods was finally employed. This introduces a route towards revealing the relation between structure, shape, and optical (plasmonic) properties of complex composite metal particles as well as fabrication strategies for nanoassemblies of tailored structures in the field of nanoplasmonics.

Abstract:In this paper, Ag doped ZnO nanorods with N plasmon treatment were synthesized on Si substrate based on diffusion doping principle. At the same time, pure ZnO, Ag doped ZnO and ZnO nanorods with N plasmon treatment were also prepared. The experimental results showed that the surface of ZnO/Ag/N is the roughest, but there is no redundant Ag on the surface. The red shift of the absorption edge is the largest. The most noteworthy is that ZnO/Ag/N has a good acceptor emission behavior, and the calculated acceptor binding energy is about 128 meV.

Abstract:The light-stimulated transformation of ensembles of spherical nanoparticles into anisotropic metal nanostructures mediated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation is an elegant way of synthesizing triangular silver nanoprisms with extraordinary control over size and shape. Generally, the transformation occurs in oxidizing environments along a pathway that involves the oxidative etching of small preexisting Ag seeds, followed by plasmon-mediated reduction of the resulting Ag ions and Ag0 incorporation into the anisotropic nanocrystals. Here, we investigate pathways toward Ag nanoprisms from initially homogeneous AgNO3 solutions held under reducing conditions. Observations using in situ electron microscopy show that reducing environments and high Ag precursor concentrations in the presence of sodium citrate favor two alternative transformation routes of initial spherical nuclei into anisotropic nanoprisms: (i) the aggregation of spherical nanoparticles and plasmon-mediated conversion of small clusters into triangular prisms; (ii) shape fluctuations of individual small nanoparticles. Simulated field distributions confirm that the coupling of the LSPR excitation between closely spaced nanoparticles causes significant field enhancements near the local plasmonic hot spots, which facilitates accelerated Ag incorporation and thus supports the transformation into nanoprisms.

Abstract:Ag nanorods with finely controllable aspect ratios (especially 1–5) were synthesized in high yield via an effective one-step aqueous-phase method, in which the longitudinal plasmon modes in visible and infrared regions of short Ag nanorods were well adjustable. Meanwhile, excitation wavelength- and excitation fluence-dependent electronic dynamics of short Ag nanorods were acquired and were found to be regular. This suggested that short Ag nanorods would have great potential in plasmonic and photoelectronic fields.

Abstract:In order to understand surface plasmon resonance of anisotropic metal nanocrystals, we have produced Ag nanorods with well-controlled aspect ratio by soft template method with seed-mediated. The aspect ratio of synthesized Ag nanorods can be tuned flexibly by changing the amounts of seeds. This provides a convenience for studying localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of Ag nanorods. Based on these excellent properties, we calculated the extinction spectrum and electrical field distribution of Ag nanorods near the AgNCs by discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method and investigated the effect of incident and polarization direction on far-field and near-field characteristics. These results could be helpful for us to take the advantage of excellent optical properties on optoelectronic and biomedical field.
