Abstract:To explore the relationship between growth and wood traits of Betula platyphylla, this study analyzed four growth characteristics and ten wood properties for 60 half-sib families growing in northeastern China. AD the growth characteristics and four of the wood properties differed significantly among the families. The coefficients of phenotypic variation and heritabilities of the investigated traits ranged from 4.4% to 43.1% and from 0.15 to 0.74, respectively. Most of the growth characteristics were not correlated with wood properties. Therefore, superior families were identified by evaluating their growth characteristics and wood properties independently. Based on growth characteristics, families 4-7, 1-7, 3-12, 4-13, 1-15, and 3-16 were deemed superior (genetic gains of 3.6%-12.5%). Based on wood properties, families 1-12, 4-3, 2-8, 3-7, 4-1, and 1-7 were deemed superior (genetic gains of 0.1%-5.6%). When growth characteristics and wood properties were evaluated jointly, families 4-7, 1-12, 1-1, 1-15, 4-13, and 2-8 were deemed superior, and the genetic gains were as follows: tree height, 5.7%; diameter at breast height, 4.5%; volume, 11.8%; stem straightness degree, 3.3%; wood moisture content, 0.2%; air-dry density, 1.4%; flexural strength, 3.4%; and shear strength, 3.0%. These methods are useful for selecting superior B. platyphylla families as candidates for wide cultivation.
