Abstract:Polymer dielectrics with excellent thermal stability are the essential core material for thin film capacitors applied in a harsh-environment. However, the dielectric and mechanical properties of polymers are commonly deteriorated with temperature rising. Herein, polyetherimide (PEI)-based nanocomposites contained with SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) are fabricated by a solution casting method. It is found that the introduction of SiO2-NPs decreases the electric conductivity and significantly enhances the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites, especially under high temperatures. As a result, the 5 vol% PEI/SiO2-NPs nanocomposite film displays a superior dielectric energy storage performance, e.g., a discharged energy density of 6.30 J cm(-3) and a charge-discharge efficiency of 90.5% measured at 620 MV m(-1) and 150 degrees C. In situ scanning Kelvin probe microscopy characterization indicates that the charge carriers can be trapped in the interfacial regions between the polymer matrix and the SiO2-NPs till the temperature reaches as high as 150 degrees C. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to fabricate high-temperature dielectric polymer nanocomposites by embedding inorganic nanoparticles and provides a method for directly detecting charge behavior at the nanoscale inside the matrix.
Significantly Enhanced Energy Storage Performances of PEI-based Composites Utilizing Surface Functionalized ZrO2 Nanoparticles for High-Temperature Application

Abstract:Polymer dielectrics with a high energy density and an available energy storage capacity have been playing an important role in advanced electronics and power systems. Nevertheless, the use of polymer dielectrics in harsh environments is limited by their low energy density at high temperatures. Herein, zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) nanoparticles were decorated with amino group utilizing 4,4-methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate) (AMEO) and successfully incorporated into polyetherimide (PEI) matrix. The dielectric properties, breakdown strength, and energy storage performances of PEI/ZrO 2 -AMEO nanocomposites were investigated from 25 °C to 150 °C. It is found that the combination of moderate bandgap ZrO 2 with modest dielectric constant and polar groups at interface with deep trap can offer an available strategy to simultaneously increase the dielectric constant and breakdown strength of polymer dielectrics. As a result, the composites containing ZrO 2 -AMEO exhibit excellent energy storage performance at elevated temperatures. Specially, the PEI-based composites with 3 vol% ZrO 2 -AMEO display a maximum discharged energy density ( U d ) of 3.1 J/cm 3 at 150 °C, presenting 90% higher than that of neat PEI. This study may help to better develop the polymer-based dielectric composite applied at elevated temperatures.
Crosslinked polyetherimide nanocomposites with superior energy storage achieved via trace Al2O3 nanoparticles

Abstract:Polymer dielectrics which operate under elevated temperatures are widely desirable for advanced electric energy storage systems. However, the currently available polymer dielectrics are limited to relatively low working temperatures. Herein, crosslinked nanocomposites with trace wide-bandgap nanofillers alumina (Al2O3) and heat-resistant polyetherimide (PEI) were prepared by in-situ polymerization and solution casting method. Crosslinked networks in the nanocomposites improve the breakdown strength and suppress dielectric loss. Furthermore, we demonstrate trace Al2O3 nanofillers change the microstructure of polymer matrix and facilitate the dipole rotations in the chain segments by atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR). The dielectric constant of the nanocomposites is enhanced without sacrificing the breakdown and mechanical properties, which compensates for the dielectric constant reduced by crosslinking. All the composite films maintain excellent dielectric stability over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. Besides, giant discharged energy density and ultrahigh charge-discharge efficiency are simultaneously achieved at high temperatures. Astoundingly, energy storage performance at high temperatures is superior to most of the reported work. This work demonstrates a viable strategy to prepare high-temperature polymer dielectric films for energy storage applications.

Abstract:TiO2@Au@AlOx@Au nanofibers with double coulomb blockade nanolayers are obtained via a physical sputtering strategy which exhibit outstanding capacitive energy storage boosting capability. The PEI composite with merely 0.3 wt.% TiO2@Au@AlOx@Au nanofibers exhibits an ultrahigh discharge energy density of 9.70 J cm−3 at 200 °C which reaches 453% of pure PEI. Polymer dielectrics have broad applications in advanced electronics and power systems. However, they suffer from low energy density and poor breakdown performance at high temperatures, limiting their applications in high‐temperature environments. Herein, TiO2@Au@AlOx@Au nanofibers with double coulomb blockade nanolayers are obtained via a physical sputtering strategy to improve the high‐temperature energy storage performance of polyetherimide composites. Experimental studies and finite elemenet phase‐field simulations demonstrate that the double‐layer coulomb blockade effect and micro‐capacitor effect of Au nanoparticles synergistically enhance the breakdown strength and dielectric permittivity of polyetherimide composite at high temperatures. Notably, the composite exhibits ultra‐high discharged energy densities of 11.33 and 9.70 J cm−3 at 150 and 200 °C, respectively, along with high charge–discharge efficiencies of 93.4% and 84%, which far exceed that of the polymer nanocomposites reported so far. Furthermore, the composite exhibits excellent charge–discharge cycling performance (>50000 cycles at 400 MV m−1) and high‐power density (1.16 MW cm−3) at 200 °C, making it an ideal candidate for high‐temperature capacitors. Hopefully, these nanofibers not only serve as excellent nanofillers for high‐temperature energy storage dielectric composites but also holds tremendous potential and inspirational significance for other applications such as electronics, biomedical fields, optics, and catalysis.

Abstract:2D Hybrid structure polymer nanocomposites exhibit remarkable capacitive energy storage performance, including high energy density, great charge–discharge efficiency, and excellent dielectric stability at elevated temperatures. This work enables the rational design of high‐energy‐density dielectric polymer composites with a wide working temperature range. Dielectric materials with excellent high‐temperature energy storage performances are urgently demanded in advanced electronic market. However, the sharply reduced energy storage capabilities caused by conduction loss impede the applications of polymer‐based nanocomposites at harsh environments. In this work, the 2D hybrid structure fillers of boron nitride nanosheets‐titanium dioxide (BNNSs‐TiO2), where TiO2 nanoparticles tightly wrap around the 2D BNNSs, are fused with polyetherimide (PEI) forming polymer nanocomposite films. The finite element simulation and experiment results indicate that the hybrid structure 2D BNNSs‐TiO2 can effectively regulate local electric field strength and interfacial polarization, facilitating the enhancement in energy storage properties. Accordingly, the composite film delivers a superior discharged energy density (≈4 J cm−3) and charging/discharging efficiency (≈90%) at 150 °C, better than recently discussed high‐temperature pristine polymer and their composite films. This contribution offers a feasible idea to explore reliable dielectric capacitors at high temperature.

Abstract:High-energy-density polymer dielectrics capable of high temperature operation are highly demanded in advanced electronics and power systems. Here, the polyetherimide (PEI) composites filled with the core–shell structured nanoparticles composed of ZrO2 core and Al2O3 shell are described. The establishment of a gradient of the dielectric constants from ZrO2 core and Al2O3 shell to PEI matrix gives rise to much less distortion of the electric field around the nanoparticles, and consequently, high breakdown strength at varied temperatures. The wide bandgap Al2O3 shell creates deep traps in the composites and thus yields an order of magnitude lower leakage of current density of the composites with respect to those with pristine ZrO2 at high temperatures. Accordingly, the composite delivers a discharged energy density of 5.19 J cm−3 and 150 °C, which outperforms the current free-standing high-temperature dielectric polymer and polymer composite films measured at 10 Hz. Moreover, the core–shell structured composites endow great thermal stability, charge–discharge efficiency, and the improved energy density with increasing temperature from 25 to 150 °C. The finite element simulations and numerical calculations are performed to reveal the mechanistic impacts of the core–shell structure on the electric field distribution and electrical conduction of the composites.

Abstract:Flexible polymeric dielectrics with excellent energy density and high temperature resistance are essential in modern electronic communication and industrial systems. However, current polymeric dielectrics suffer from seriously deteriorated energy density with the increase of temperature, which is caused by the exceptionally increased leakage current under high voltage and high temperature. Here, based on the results of thermally stimulated depolarization current measurements and phase-filed simulations, we demonstrate that an ultralow (0.25-0.75%) volume fraction of high-insulative boron nitride nanoparticles (BNNPs) can generate deep traps and shorten the hopping distance for mobile charges in polyetherimide (PEI) nanocomposite, thereby suppressing conduction loss and improving breakdown strength at 150°C. In addition, it's found that the dielectric constant of the nanocomposites is remarkably enhanced at ultra-low loading of BNNPs compared to the pristine PEI. Accordingly, with the simultaneous enhancement of the dielectric constant and breakdown field strength, the PEI-based dilute nanocomposite film yields a high energy density of 4.2J/cm3 and the ultrahigh charge-discharge efficiency of 90% at 150°C. Undoubtedly, this work offers a facile and scalable approach to adjusting the charge transport and trapping behaviors of polymeric dielectrics for improved high temperature electrostatic energy storage performance, which is of significant importance for their practical applications in high-temperature electrical and electronic systems.

Abstract:Improving thermal stability of high-performance polymer-based nanocomposite films for electrical energy storage is essential to meet ever-increasing demands for the electrical industry, especially at harsh environment applications. Here, the polyetherimide (PEI)-based composites films are prepared via grafting method in the presence of SrTiO3 (ST) nanofillers to substantially improved capacitive performances at elevated temperature. The composites films with the optimized filler compositions show a high discharged energy density of 6.76 J/cm3 under 600 MV/m at room temperature. Meantime, excellent high-temperature discharged energy density of 6.6 J/cm3 at 100 °C for the composites films is also achieved, which is superior to most of the previously reported. The simulations further demonstrate that the ST nanoparticles embedded into the composites films could effectively improve heat dissipation in comparison with pristine PEI matrix, resulting in enhancement high-temperature energy storage capabilities. This work gives considerable promise for high energy density polymer-based nanocomposite films capacitors under harsh environments.

Abstract:Future electronic devices toward high integration and miniaturization demand reliable operation of dielectric materials at high electric fields and elevated temperatures. However, the electrical deterioration caused by Joule heat generation remains a persistent challenge to overcome. Here, the solution-processed polyimide (PI) nanocomposites with unique two-dimensional (2D) alumina nanoplates are reported. Substantial improvements in the breakdown strength, charge-discharge efficiency and discharged energy density at elevated temperatures have been demonstrated in the composites, owing to simultaneously suppressed conduction loss and increased thermal conductivity upon the incorporation of 2D Al 2 O 3 nanofillers possessing excellent dielectric insulation and thermophysical properties. The predominance of Al 2 O 3 nanoplates in enhancing thermal stability and high-temperature capacitive performance over nanoparticles and nanowires is validated experimentally and is further rationalized via finite element simulations. Notably, the Al 2 O 3 nanoplates filled PI nanocomposite exhibits a high-temperature capability up to 200 °C and remarkable efficiency (e.g. ≥ 95% at 200 MV/m) over a wide temperature range, which outperforms commercial dielectric polymers and rivals the state-of-the-art polyimide nanocomposites.

Abstract:The urgent demand for high-temperature dielectrics toward capacitive energy storage arises from numerous emerging harsh-environment high-temperature applications such as electric vehicles, aerospace power conditioning, downhole oil explorations. For these applications, it is imperative to enhance the discharge energy density of polymer-based dielectrics at elevated temperature. Herein, a trace composite approach is proposed and demonstrated. Two types of polyetherimides (PEIs)-based dipolar glasses are designed, synthesized and composited with trace amount of ultrafine Al2O3 nanoparticles. PEIs-based dipolar glasses with high T-g (similar to 250 degrees C) and much enhanced electrical polarization are constructed by introducing dipolar groups (-CF3) and sulfonyl groups (-SO2-) with high dipolar moment (similar to 4.30 D) in the polymer chains. The incorporation of ultrafine Al2O3 nanoparticles increases the electrical polarization and keeps low loss. The remarkable permittivity enhancement via the ultrafine filling could be ascribed to more active mobility of dipolar groups characterized by activation energy of movement and the correlation of arrangement of dipolar groups in the chains with this effect is also revealed. These results will contribute to deeply understanding and rationally designing high-performance polymer-based nanocomposites orienting to high-temperature electrical energy storage.
Magnetic-assisted Alignment of Nanofibers in a Polymer Nanocomposite for High-Temperature Capacitive Energy Storage Applications

Abstract:Flexible polymer-based dielectrics with high energy storage characteristics over a wide temperature range are crucial for advanced electrical and electronic systems. However, the intrinsic low dielectric constant and drastically degraded breakdown strength hinder the development of polymer-based dielectrics at elevated temperatures. Here, we propose a magnetic-assisted approach for fabricating a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-based nanocomposite with precisely aligned nanofibers within the polymer matrix, and with Al2O3 deposition layers applied on the surface. The resulting polymer nanocomposite exhibits simultaneously increased dielectric constant and enhanced breakdown strength at high temperatures compared to pristine PEI. The enhanced dielectric constant is contributed by the depolarization effect of out-of-plane orientated nanofibers in composite films, while the surficial Al2O3 layers, with a wide bandgap, effectively prevent charge injection and transport at the electrode/dielectric interface. The optimally aligned composite films exhibit a significantly enhanced discharged energy density of 6.5 J cm-3 at 150 degrees C, with approximately 41% and 132% enhancement compared to random films and pristine PEI films, respectively. Additionally, a metalized multilayer polymer-based capacitor utilizing this composite film produces a high capacitance of 88 nF, while demonstrating excellent cyclability and flexibility at 150 degrees C. This work offers an effective strategy for developing polymer-based composite dielectrics with superior capacitive performance at elevated temperatures and demonstrates the potential of fabricating high-quality flexible capacitors. A magnetic-assisted approach is proposed for fabricating anisotropic polymer nanocomposite with aligned nanofibers, showcasing excellent high-temperature energy storage performance.

Abstract:High‐entropy‐stabilized Bi2Ti2O7 nanofibers with linear dielectric properties and a high dielectric constant are synthesized, and a high energy density of 6.46 J cm−3 at 150 °C is achieved, by using the high‐entropy fibers as the fillers in polyetherimide composites. This study provides a guideline for the development of dielectric fillers with tunable dielectric properties and microstructures, through a distinctive entropy‐engineering strategy. Polymer composite dielectrics capable of high energy density, high efficiency, and high‐temperature stability are in high demand for application in various electronic vehicles and power systems. A major challenge, however, is the reasonable design of high‐performance nanofillers that are beneficial to the polarization and breakdown strength simultaneously. Here, high‐entropy‐induced ceramic nanofibers with a stable Bi2Ti2O7‐type pyrochlore phase are developed as effective nanofillers to enhance the energy storage performance of polyetherimide (PEI) composites. Benefiting from the linear pyrochlore phase, refined grain size, and increased amorphous fraction of the high‐entropy nanofillers, the resultant PEI composites exhibit significantly improved energy storage performance over a wide temperature range of 25–150 °C. Notably, a high energy density of 6.46 J cm−3 under an electric field of 590 MV m−1 is achieved at 150 °C, which outperforms most of the reported PEI composites. This study provides a guideline for the development of dielectric fillers with tunable dielectric properties and microstructures, thus promoting the development of high‐performance polymer composites.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite sub‐nanowires with a diameter of ≈0.9 nm are incorporated in polyetherimide to induce enormous interfacial area to increase polymer chain mobility and form dense charge‐carrier traps with only 0.5 wt.% loading, yielding a discharged energy density of 3.1 J cm−3 with efficiency of 90% and performance stability up to 3 × 105 charge‐discharge cycles at 200 °C. Polymer dielectrics with high breakdown strength (Eb) and high efficiency are urgently demanded in advanced electrical and electronic systems, yet their energy density (Ue) is limited due to low dielectric constant (εr) and high loss at elevated temperatures. Conventional inorganic fillers with diameters from nano to micrometers can only increase εr at the cost of compromised Eb and Ue due to their poor compatibility with polymer matrix. Herein, hydroxyapatite (HAP) sub‐nanowires with a diameter of ≈0.9 nm are incorporated in polyetherimide (PEI) matrix to form HAP/PEI sub‐nanocomposites. εr and Eb of the composites are concomitantly enhanced with only 0.5 wt.% of HAP sub‐nanowires, leading to high Ue of 5.14 (@150 °C) and 3.1 J cm−3 (@200 °C) with efficiency of 90% and high‐temperature stability up to 3 × 105 charge‐discharge cycles at 200 °C. Microstructural analysis and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the sub‐nanowires with comparable diameter as polymer chains induce enormous interfacial area, substantially increase mobility of polymer chains and form dense traps for charge carriers. This work extends the current research scope of polymer‐inorganics composite dielectrics to the sub‐nano‐level incorporation and provides a novel strategy for fabricating high performance polymer dielectrics at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:The polymer dielectric is a promising material for intelligent and energy-saving applications in modern electronic and power systems. However, there are many crucial drawbacks in the applications at elevated temperatures, such as high dielectric loss and low energy density. Herein, a method to enhance the thermal stability of the polymer dielectrics is presented, whereby SrTiO3 particles are introduced into poly(ether imide) (PEI) film to fabricate polymer-based dielectric composites. SrTiO3 is preferred as the filler for its moderate dielectric constant and wide band gap, which simultaneously restrains the leakage current density of the composites. The results show that the composite dielectric loaded with 3 vol % SrTiO3 particles achieves a discharge energy density of 11.30 J/cm3 at 640 MV/m. Furthermore, it exhibits the highest energy density of 10.30 J/cm3 at 150 °C and 530 MV/m, while the discharge energy density and efficiency remain 8.82 J/cm3 and 80% under 500 MV/m at 150 °C, respectively. The composites exhibit excellent fatigue resistance, and the discharge energy density is maintained at 96.21% with an efficiency of 95.96% after 105 charge–discharge cycles at 150 °C. Ultra-superior high-temperature energy storage properties in polymer nanocomposites via rational design of core–shell structured inorganic antiferroelectric fillers

Abstract:Current polymer nanocomposites for energy storage suffer from both low discharged energy density ( U e ) and efficiency ( η ) with increasing temperature due to their large remnant electric displacement ( D r ), small breakdown strength and high conduction loss at high temperature. To solve these issues, herein, polyetherimide (PEI) nanocomposites filled with core–shell structured nanoparticles, composed of a (Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O 3 (PLZST) antiferroelectric core and an Al 2 O 3 shell, are developed. The PLZST core possesses large maximum electric displacement ( D max ) and low D r in a wide temperature range, which helps refine high-temperature electric displacement–electric field loops of the nanocomposites. The utilization of the Al 2 O 3 shell with dielectric constant close to that of the PEI matrix, wide band gap, and high thermal conductivity alleviates the distortion of the electric field around inorganic fillers, creates deep traps and promotes Joule heat dissipation, resulting in improved breakdown strength and suppressed conduction loss. Consequently, an ultrahigh U e of 10.20 J cm −3 at 150 °C, which is a record high value for dielectric polymer composites at elevated temperature, is achieved with a large η of 83.5%, simultaneously. Finite element simulations reveal the influence of the core–shell structure on electrical tree evolution, electric field distribution and internal temperature in nanocomposites, and prove the rationality of the design strategy.

Abstract:Dielectric polymer nanocomposites are ideal choices for electrostatic energy storage due to their high power density and reliability, but they cannot operate efficiently at high temperature. To solve this issue, herein, we designed and developed sandwich-structured montmorillonite (MMT)/polyetherimide (PEI)-(Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O 3 (PLZST) antiferroelectrics (AFEs)@dopamine (DA)-MMT/PEI nanocomposites. On one hand, compared to current wide-band gap fillers, i.e., TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , and MgO, two-dimensional MMT nanosheets possess unique electrically insulating performances along the thickness direction, and thus can effectively stop charges injecting and migrating, causing low conduction loss, and large breakdown strength ( E b ). On the other hand, PLZST AFEs with orthorhombic structure can exhibit high maximum electric displacement ( D max ) and small remnant electric displacement ( D r ) at high temperature, which is beneficial for achieving large D max - D r in the nanocomposites. In addition, large dielectric constant differences between MMT/PEI and PLZST@DA/PEI layers can inhibit electrical tree growth, resulting in further raised E b . Finite element simulations on electrical tree evolving confirm experimental breakdown results. The sandwich-structured nanocomposite displays impressive high-temperature (150 °C) capacitive performances possessing meanwhile a high E b of 5265.9 kV/cm, large discharged energy density ( U e ) of 7.1 J/cm 3 , being about 6 times that of the commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene, and large charge-discharge efficiency ( η ) of 81.6 %, which exceeds obviously latest polymer and polymer composites in terms of overall energy storage performances. More encouragingly, it displays an ultrahigh power density of 15.63 MW/cm 3 and ultrafast discharge rate of 19.2 ns at 150 °C, indicate its excellent application potential in high-temperature pulse power systems.

Abstract:Advanced polymer dielectrics with high energy density at elevated temperatures are highly desired to meet the requirements of modern electronic and electrical systems under harsh conditions. Herein, we report a novel polyimide/magnesium oxide (PI/MgO) nanodielectric that exhibits high energy storage density (Ue) and charge–discharge efficiency (η) along with excellent cycling stability at elevated temperatures. Benefiting from the large bandgap of MgO and the extended interchain spacing of PI, the composite films can simultaneously achieve high dielectric constant and high breakdown strength, leading to enhanced energy storage density. The nanocomposite film doped with 0.1 vol% MgO can achieve a maximum Ue of 2.6 J cm−3 and a η of 89% at 450 MV m−1 and 150 °C, which is three times that of the PI film under the same conditions. In addition, embedding ultralow content of inorganic fillers can avoid aggregation and facilitate its large-scale production. This work may provide a new paradigm for exploring polymer nanocomposites with excellent energy storage performance at high temperatures and under a high electric field.

Abstract:With the escalating dielectric capacitor application in miniaturization and integration, high energy density is urgently needed for polymer dielectrics. Due to the polymer dielectrics being prone to breakdown as the temperature increases, it is challenging to break the adverse coupling between the breakdown resistance and heat resistance of polymer dielectrics at high temperatures. Herein, poly(ether imide) (PEI)-based dielectrics with an adjustable Al2O3 interlayer by atomic layer deposition are proposed. The inorganic interlayer Al2O3 with a wide bandgap (8.6 eV) not only can improve the dielectric constant but also can reduce leakage current by its block effects capture free electrons, leading to enhanced capacitive performance at high temperatures. The results show that the energy density of the multilayer composite with an optimal 50 nm thickness of Al2O3 layers reaches 7.02 J/cm(3) under the 550 kV/mm electric field with an energy efficiency of 94.94%, which is about 49% higher than that of pure PEI. Even at 150 degrees C, the energy density maintains 4.84 J/cm(3) under 540 kV/mm, which is 1.5 times that of pure PEI. This work provides a feasible route for polymer dielectrics for energy storage applications at high temperatures.

Abstract:The thermal breakdown is a crucial factor leading to the failure of dielectric polymers owing to the production of a large amount of Joule heat derived from conduction loss and thermal accumulation, which becomes a technical bottleneck restricting the development of high-temperature electronic devices and equipment. Nevertheless, it is tough to minimize conduction loss and prevent premature heat degradation simultaneously when designing high-temperature resistant polymer-based energy storage dielectrics. Herein, PEI-matrix nanocomposites which core-shell structures of 2D BNNSs core and Al2O3 shell are prepared. Our result reveals that introducing the wide -band gap core-shell design into polymer generates trap energy levels, leading to a diminished conduction loss and a strengthened Schottky barrier. And high-thermal conductivity 2D nanofiller further promotes the dissi-pation of Joule heat and faster heat transfer, which eases deferring thermally assisted electrical breakdown of the dielectric giving rise to an excellent high-temperature capacitive performance. As a result, an outstanding dis-charged energy density (Ud) of 5.74 J/cm3 is achieved at 525 MV/m and 150 degrees C while efficiency (eta) is 91.5 %, which outperforms most of the commercial high-temperature polymers. This work promotes the development and application of polymeric nanocomposite films appliable elevated temperatures.
Nanofiber-reinforced polymer nanocomposite with hierarchical interfaces for high-temperature dielectric energy storage applications

Abstract:Flexible polymer nanocomposites reinforced by high-dielectric-constant ceramic nanofillers have shown great potential for dielectric energy storage applications in advanced electronic and electrical systems. However, it remains a challenge to improve their energy density and energy efficiency at high temperatures above 150°C. Here, we report a nanofiber-reinforced polyetherimide nanocomposite employing BN-BaTiO 3 heterogeneous nanofibers as fillers, where the BN nanoparticles were embedded inside BaTiO 3 nanofibers to create BN/BaTiO 3 /PEI hierarchical interfaces. The high dielectric constant and the geometric large aspect ratio of the BN-BaTiO 3 heterogeneous nanofibers lead to simultaneously increased dielectric constant and breakdown strength of the nanocomposite over a broad temperature range. In particular, the emerging hierarchical BN/BaTiO 3 /PEI interfaces enable promoted density and energy level of traps for the mobile charges, which further suppresses the conduction loss and improves the breakdown strength under high temperatures, as confirmed by a combination of thermally stimulated depolarization current measurement and phase-field simulation. Finally, the nanocomposite with hierarchical interfaces boosts an ultrahigh energy density of 5.23 J cm −3 with an energy efficiency of > 90% at 150°C, which is the highest energy density reported so far in nanofiber-reinforced polymer nanocomposites and also outperforms most nanocomposites counterparts dispersed with nanoparticles and nanosheets. Our work demonstrates hierarchical interface engineering as an effective strategy to promote the high-temperature energy storage performance of fiber-reinforced polymer nanocomposites, which is of significance for their applications in high-temperature harsh conditions.
