Abstract:The neural network-based modeling method is one of the most effective methods for han-dling the nonlinear characteristics of magnetorheological (MR) dampers. The modeling of the MR damper, considering the piston displacement/velocity and applied current as the inputs, is usually not sufficiently accurate. Thus, historical values of the inputs are utilized to improve the estimation. In this study, instantaneous variables are constructed through Hilbert transformation to represent the instantaneous characteristics of the excitations to further improve the accuracy of the MR damper model. The corresponding experiments are performed to investigate the relationship between these instantaneous variables and the nonlinear behavior of the MR damper. A comparative analysis of a feedforward neural network (FNN) model with different input variables further demonstrates the merits and accuracy of the proposed model. An indirect modeling method is proposed to consider the scenario with varying currents, thereby making modeling easier and reducing the amount of training data required for the neural network. First, the FNN is employed to describe the dynamic response of the MR damper based on test data with a constant applied current. Then, a first-order filter model is used to represent the electromagnetic dynamics of the MR damper. Finally, the resulting indirect model combining the FNN model and first-order filter model is used to predict the damper force for time-varying currents. The comparison results demonstrate that the indirect method for the proposed model exhibits high fidelity for characterizing the nonlinear damper force. The prediction error in the low-velocity region is significantly reduced compared to the traditional FNN model. The proposed method has an improved capacity to predict the damper force for a more complex modulated excitation. Furthermore, a simple interpolation method for the proposed model is given for MR damper control, the results for which indicate a quality performance in tracking the target force.
