Abstract:Molecular Magnets In article number 2208919, Yulong Huang, Shenqiang Ren, and co‐workers report in situ chemical tuning to realize the controllable transformation from low‐temperature magnetic order to room‐temperature hard magnetism in a layered molecular‐based magnet. A coercivity of 8500 Oe and energy product of 0.6 MG Oe are demonstrated, providing a universal approach to control organic magnetism.

Abstract:We show that anisotropic energy of a 2D antiferromagnet is greatly enhanced via stacking on a magnetic substrate layer, arising from the sublattice-dependent interlayer magnetic interaction that defines an effective anisotropic energy. Interestingly, this effective energy couples strongly with the interlayer stacking order and the magnetic order of the substrate layer, providing unique mechanical and magnetic means to control the antiferromagnetic order. These two types of control methods affect distinctly the sublattice magnetization dynamics, with a change of the ratio of sublattice precession amplitudes in the former and its chirality in the later. In moir\'{e} superlattices formed by a relative twist or strain between the layers, the coupling with stacking order introduces a landscape of effective anisotropic energy across the moir\'{e}, which can be utilized to create nonuniform antiferromagnetic textures featuring periodically localized low-energy magnons.

Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2D) magnets provoke a surge of interest in large anisotropy in reduced dimensions and are promising for next‐generation information technology where dynamic magnetic tuning is essential. Until recently, the crucial metal‐organic magnet Cr(pyz)2⋅xLiCl⋅yTHF with considerable high coercivity and high‐temperature magnetic order opens up a new platform to control magnetism in metal‐organic materials at room temperature. Here we report an in‐situ chemical tuning route to realize the controllable transformation of low‐temperature magnetic order into room‐temperature hard magnetism in Cr(pyz)2⋅xLiCl⋅yTHF. The chemical tuning via electrochemical lithiation and solvation/desolvation exhibits continuously variable magnetic features from cryogenic magnetism to the room‐temperature optimum performance of coercivity (Hc) of 8500 Oe and energy product of 0.6 MGOe. Such chemically flexible tunability of room‐temperature magnetism is ascribed to the different degrees of lithiation and solvation that modify the stoichiometry and Cr‐pyrazine coordination framework. Furthermore, the additively manufactured hybrid magnets show air stability and electromagnetic induction, providing potential applications. The findings here suggest chemical tuning as a universal approach to control the anisotropy and magnetism of 2D hybrid magnets at room temperature, promising for data storage, magnetic refrigeration, and spintronics. Largely Tunable Magneto-Coloration of Monolayer 2D Materials via Size Tailoring

Abstract:Magnetically influenced light-matter interaction provides a contactless, noninvasive and power-free way for material characterization and light modulation. Shape anisotropy of active materials mainly determines the sensitivity of magneto-optic response, thereby making magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials suitable in achieving the giant magneto-birefringence effect as discovered recently. Consequently, relationship between magneto-birefringence response and shape anisotropy of 2D materials is critical but has remained elusive, restricting its widespread applications. Here, we report the highly sensitive and largely tunable magneto-coloration via manipulating the shape-anisotropy of magnetic 2D materials. We reveal a quadratic increasing relationship between the magneto-optic Cotton–Mouton coefficient and the lateral size of 2D materials and achieve a more than one order of magnitude tunable response. This feature enables the engineerable transmissive magneto-coloration of 2D materials by tailoring their shape anisotropy. Abstract:Magnetic anisotropy is essential for permanent magnets to maintain their magnetization along specific directions. Understanding and controlling the magnetic anisotropy on a single-molecule scale are challenging but of fundamental importance for the future's spintronic technology. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we demonstrated the ability to control the magnetic anisotropy by tuning the ligand field at the single-molecule level. We constructed a molecular magnetic complex with a single Mn atom and an organic molecule (4,4'-biphenyldicarbonitrile) as a ligand via atomic manipulation. Inelastic tunneling spectra (IETS) show that the Mn complex has much larger axial magnetic anisotropy than individual Mn atoms, and the anisotropy energy can be tuned by the coupling strength of the ligand. With density functional theory calculations, we revealed that the enhanced magnetic anisotropy of Mn arising from the carbonitrile ligand provides a prototype for the engineering of the magnetism of quantum devices.

Abstract:AbstractIntroducing magnetic switchability into artificial molecular machines is fascinating for precise control of magnetism via external stimuli. Herein, a field‐induced CoII single‐molecule magnet was found to exhibit the reversible switch of Jahn–Teller distortion near room temperature, along with thermal conformational motion of the 18‐crown‐6 rotor, which pulls the coordinated H2O to rotate through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and triggers a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal phase transition with Twarm=282 K and Tcool=276 K. Interestingly, the molecular magnetic anisotropy probed by single‐crystal angular‐resolved magnetometry revealed the reorientation of easy axis by 14.6°. Moreover, ON/OFF negative magnetodielectric effects were respectively observed in the high‐/low‐temperature phase, which manifests the spin‐lattice interaction in the high‐temperature phase could be stronger, in accompanied by the hydrogen bonding between the rotating 18‐crown‐6 and the coordinated H2O.
Novel two-dimensional magnets with an in-plane auxetic effect

Abstract:The auxetic effect in two-dimensional (2D) materials can not only enhance their mechanical properties but also brings additional tunability of their physical properties. Here, we employ density-functional-theory calculations to report on a class of auxetic 2D magnets, namely, the squarely packed transition metal dichlorides MCl 2 (M = Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni). These magnets are dynamically stable and exhibit an intrinsic in-plane auxetic effect. Meanwhile, the transition metal disulfides MS 2 (M = V, Cr, Mn) with the same crystal structure exhibit a positive Poisson's ratio. This indicates that the auxetic effect in MCl 2 is not merely dominated by the crystal structure. We attribute the occurrence of such auxetic behavior to the weak bond stiffness governed by electronic coupling between nearest-neighboring atoms. We find that magnetic ordering of 2D magnets with an auxetic effect is robust under external strain due to the protection of super-exchange interaction coming from the auxetic effect. Super-exchange interaction is sensitive to the symmetry of the crystal structure while the auxetic effect can mitigate the variation of such symmetry. The abundant magnetic properties in combination with the auxetic effect exhibit potential for novel nanodevice applications.

Abstract:Exploring large and tunable magnetic anisotropy (MA) in a single magnetic atom is of merit for information storage due to the highest information data density. In this work, we studied the MA of transition-metal atoms X (X = Co, Fe, Ir, Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, V, W) adsorbed on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric (FE) In2Se3 by first-principles calculations. We find that when the ferroelectric polarization of the In2Se3 is switched, the strengths of the MA for Co, Ir, Nb and Ti single atoms can be changed, while the directions of the MA for Fe, Mo, Ta, V and W single atoms are reversed. Calculated electronic structure and orbital-resolved magnetic anisotropy energy suggest that the variations in the occupation of spin-minority state and the exchange splitting of d orbitals at Fermi level by switching FE polarization are responsible for the change of the strength and direction of the MA on X atoms.

Abstract:A suitable magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) is a key factor for magnetic materials. However, an effective MAE control method has not yet been achieved. In this study, we propose a novel strategy to manipulate MAE by rearranging the d-orbitals of metal atoms with oxygen functionalized metallophthalocyanine (MPc) by first-principles calculations. By the dual regulation of electric field and atomic adsorption, we have achieved a substantial amplification of the single regulation method. The use of O atoms to modify the metallophthalocyanine (MPc) sheets effectively adjusts the orbital arrangement of the electronic configuration in the d-orbitals of the transition metal near the Fermi level, thereby modulating the MAE of the structure. More importantly, the electric field amplifies the effect of electric-field regulation by adjusting the distance between the O atom and metal atom. Our results demonstrate a new approach to modulating the MAE of two-dimensional magnetic films for practical application in information storage.

Abstract:Exploring the controlled magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) in two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets is an essential step towards the emergent magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with robust storage stability and low-power consumption. In addition to the transitional charge doping method, we propose that stacking 2D ferromagnet 1T-CrTe 2 with electrides substrate can achieve not only the high interfacial charge transfer up to 5.24×10 14 cm −2 and but also efficient modification of magnetic behaviors via interfacial engineering. Employing first-principles calculations, we show that the 1T-CrTe 2 /Ca 2 N(Y 2 C) heterostructures exhibit a significant reduction in MAE with a spin reorientation. Notably, the synergistic effect of internal charge transfer, external strain and charge doping shows a significant influence on the magnetic behaviors of the bilayer structures, enabling an efficient modulating of their MAE with distinct dependences. We elucidate that the underlying mechanism is the synergistic effect induced alteration of the spin-polarized p x and p y states on the Te atom located at the interfaces, which in turn changes the competitive spin-orbit coupling (SOC) contributions to the MAE. These findings provide a practical path toward the controllable MAE in 2D ferromagnets, and make the proposed heterostructures promising candidates for emergent spintronic devices.

Abstract:Long-range magnetic ordering of two-dimensional crystals can be sensitive to interlayer coupling, enabling the effective control of interlayer magnetism towards voltage switching, spin filtering and transistor applications. With the discovery of two-dimensional atomically thin magnets, a good platform provides us to manipulate interlayer magnetism for the control of magnetic orders. However, a less-known family of two-dimensional magnets possesses a bottom-up assembled molecular lattice and metal-to-ligand intermolecular contacts, which lead to a combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization. Here, we report the pressure-controlled interlayer magnetic coupling of molecular layered compounds via chromium-pyrazine coordination. Room-temperature long-range magnetic ordering exhibits pressure tuning with a coercivity coefficient up to 4 kOe/GPa, while pressure-controlled interlayer magnetism also presents a strong dependence on alkali metal stoichiometry and composition. Two-dimensional molecular interlayers provide a pathway towards pressure-controlled peculiar magnetism through charge redistribution and structural transformation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have received much attention due to their fascinating physical properties. In the present work, density functional theory calculations shows that Janus NiClI monolayer stands as a bipolar magnetic semiconductor, showcasing a significant magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of 1.47 meV per Ni. Such pronounced MAE can be significantly enhanced under compressive strain. The variation of MAE during the strain applying can be explained by the second-order perturbation theory of spin–orbit coupling. In addition, hole doping and electron doping provide a powerful means to engineer the NiClI to be half-metallicity, exhibiting opposite spin directions. This work will stimulate the application of 2D magnetic materials in future spintronic nanodevices.

As the dimension of the material is reduced, such that the atoms are in a single monolayer, it was widely believed that thermal fluctuations overwhelm and prevent magnetic ordering. Abstract:The magnetic properties of the layered antiferromagnet MnPS3 are dramatically altered by molecular intercalation, which introduces orderly arranged Mn2+ vacancies. Different intercalated molecules induce distinct magnetic responses, including a ferrimagnetic state characterized by a high magnetic moment (1 μB per atom). Intercalation is also achieved for few‐nm‐thick flakes, where the process can be interrupted to generate neighboring regions with different physical properties. The magnetic properties of van der Waals materials are profoundly influenced by structural defects. The layered antiferromagnet MnPS3 offers a unique opportunity to explore defect‐related magnetism, as Mn2+ vacancies can be generated by the intercalation of specific guest molecules. However, the effectiveness of this process in atomically thin flakes and the extent of the magnetic tunability remain unclear. Here, it is shown that the magnetic properties of MnPS3 can be tailored through the intercalation of different guest molecules. Notably, the insertion of four alkylammonium ions introduces different populations of Mn2+ vacancies, leading to a transition from the pristine antiferromagnetic state to more complex magnetic textures, including a ferrimagnetic state displaying a magnetic saturation of 1 μB per atom. Moreover, it is shown that the intercalation of few‐nm‐thick flakes also leads to the emergence of a ferrimagnetic response. This in‐flake intercalation, which can be monitored in real time using optical microscopy, can be interrupted before completion, generating lateral heterostructures between pristine and intercalated areas. This approach opens the way to the use of partial intercalation to define regions with distinct magnetic properties within a single flake.

Abstract:Abstract Discovery of two dimensional (2D) magnets, showing intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders, has accelerated development of novel 2D spintronics, in which all the key components are made of van der Waals (vdW) materials and their heterostructures. High-performing and energy-efficient spin functionalities have been proposed, often relying on current-driven manipulation and detection of the spin states. In this regard, metallic vdW magnets are expected to have several advantages over the widely-studied insulating counterparts, but have not been much explored due to the lack of suitable materials. Here, we report tunable itinerant ferro- and antiferromagnetism in Co-doped Fe 4 GeTe 2 utilizing the vdW interlayer coupling, extremely sensitive to the material composition. This leads to high T N antiferromagnetism of T N ~ 226 K in a bulk and ~210 K in 8 nm-thick nanoflakes, together with tunable magnetic anisotropy. The resulting spin configurations and orientations are sensitively controlled by doping, magnetic field, and thickness, which are effectively read out by electrical conduction. These findings manifest strong merits of metallic vdW magnets as an active component of vdW spintronic applications.

Abstract:Driven by applications in information technology, the search for new materials with stable, long-range magnetic ordering continues. Metalorganic magnets, involving the coordination of metal atoms with specific organic ligands, are a focus of intense research. These magnets offer customizable properties through synthetic adjustments to ligands or coordination chemistry. Here the synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of the 2D cyanocarbon magnet NiTCNE is reported. 2D-crystalline domains of this single-layered metalorganic network reach sizes exceeding 30 nanometers through co-deposition of the ligand TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) and Ni atoms on an Au(111) surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Non-contact atomic force microscopy visualizes the structure with atomic resolution. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism establishes the 2D NiTCNE as a ferromagnet, with a very high magnetic remanence, a coercive field of around 1 tesla and a Curie temperature between 10 and 20 kelvin. As metalorganic chemistry opens a large variety of routes of synthesis, we anticipate that this materials research paves the way to new magnetic nanomaterials for spintronics applications.

Abstract:Being able to tune magnetic anisotropy (MA) by an electric field is crucial for the development of low-power magnetoelectric devices. The authors present an approach for tuning the MA of a manganite film by modulating the crystal phase of a cobaltite cap layer. By driving the cap layer to switch between SrCoO${}_{2.5}$ and SrCoO${}_{3\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ structures, reversible tuning of MA between two crystal directions was achieved for the manganite layer, accompanying a change in Mn $3d$ orbital occupancy. This work demonstrates indirect tuning of the magnetic easy axis of this highly spin-polarized manganite, providing guidance for constructing electrically tunable magnetoelectric devices.
The Impacts of Molecular Adsorption on Antiferromagnetic MnPS3 Monolayers: Enhanced Magnetic Anisotropy and Intralayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Abstract:In two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems, significant magnetic anisotropy is required to protect magnetic ordering against thermal fluctuation. In this paper, we explored the effect of molecular adsorption on the magnetic anisotropy and intralayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) of monolayer MnPS3, combining the first-principles calculation and theoretical analysis. We find that molecular adsorption can break the spatial inversion symmetry in a 2D magnet, and results in a significant DMI, which is rare in pristine 2D magnets. For example, in an MPS-NO system, the magnitude of the asymmetric DMI vector increases 9 times, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy increases 600 times compared with the pristine MPS monolayer. It is found the DMI mainly comes from the structural deformation after adsorption, whereas the increase of magnetocrystalline anisotropy mainly originates from a new 'bridge' super-exchange interaction between Mn ions and NO gas molecules. The calculated Mn-NO-Mn 'bridge' super-exchange coupling strength is much higher than the Mn-S-Mn coupling strength. Our findings offer a new strategy to increase the magnetic anisotropy and induce chiral magnetic structures in 2D magnets.
Stable two-dimensional ferromagnets made of regular single-layered lattices of single-molecule nanomagnets on substrates

Abstract:We propose that stable two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets can be made of regular single-layered lattices of single-molecule nanomagnets with enough uniaxial magnetic anisotropy on appropriate substrates by controlling the inter-nanomagnet magnetic interaction. Our Monte Carlo simulated results show that such ideal 2D ferromagnets are thermodynamically stable when the anisotropy is strong enough. If the anisotropy energy equals 80 K, approximately that of the Mn12, the T_c varies from zero to 15 K depending on different inter-nanomagnet coupling constants. Such stable spin systems, experimentally accessible, should be promising for information applications.
