Abstract:Chatbots such as Xiaoice have gained huge popularity in recent years. Users frequently mention their favorite works such as songs and movies in conversations with chatbots. Detecting these entities can help design better chat strategies and improve user experience. Existing named entity recognition methods are mainly designed for formal texts, and their performance on the informal chatbot conversation texts may not be optimal In addition, these methods rely on massive manually annotated data for model training. In this article, we propose a neural approach to detect entities of works for Chinese chatbot. Our approach is based on a language model (LM) long-short term memory (LSTM) convolutional neural network (CNN) conditional random value (CRF), or LM-LSTM-CNN-CRF, framework, which contains a language model to generate context-aware character embeddings, a Bi-LSTM network to learn contextual character representations from global contexts, a CNN to learn character representations from local contexts, and a CRF layer to jointly decode the character label sequence. In addition, we propose an automatic text annotation method via quote marks to reduce the effort of manual annotation. Besides, we propose an iterative data purification method to improve the quality of the automatically constructed labeled data. Massive experiments on a real-world dataset validate that our approach can achieve good performance on entity detection for Chinese chatbots.

Abstract:With improved language ability, social chatbots are capable of forming close relationships with users and empowering various fields. This is particularly true for psychotherapy, where users’ self-disclosure is crucial for human-chatbot relationship building and chatbot service provision. Although attention has been given to the role of various anthropomorphic cues in social chatbots, the effects of avatar presentation style and avatar gaze direction on users’ self-disclosure have not been well studied. We conducted two experiments to examine how avatar presentation style (profile style vs. background style) can influence users’ self-disclosure, and whether the avatar’s gaze direction (direct vs. averted) can moderate this relationship. The results reveal that the background-style (vs. profile-style) presentation inhibits users’ self-disclosure by decreasing private self-awareness. This relationship is reversed when the avatar is equipped with an averted gaze. Our results suggest that avatar presentation and nonverbal cues should be carefully considered in chatbot interface design to facilitate users’ self-disclosure. Implications and applications are discussed.

Abstract:This article describes the development of Microsoft XiaoIce, the most popular social chatbot in the world. XiaoIce is uniquely designed as an artifical intelligence companion with an emotional connection to satisfy the human need for communication, affection, and social belonging. We take into account both intelligent quotient and emotional quotient in system design, cast human–machine social chat as decision-making over Markov Decision Processes, and optimize XiaoIce for long-term user engagement, measured in expected Conversation-turns Per Session (CPS). We detail the system architecture and key components, including dialogue manager, core chat, skills, and an empathetic computing module. We show how XiaoIce dynamically recognizes human feelings and states, understands user intent, and responds to user needs throughout long conversations. Since the release in 2014, XiaoIce has communicated with over 660 million active users and succeeded in establishing long-term relationships with many of them. Analysis of large-scale online logs shows that XiaoIce has achieved an average CPS of 23, which is significantly higher than that of other chatbots and even human conversations.

Abstract:Impressive progress has been made in developing companion Socially Interactive Agents (SIAs) that provide companionship and reduce loneliness. However, recent works focus on analyzing multimodal feedback in Answer part but ignore Question part. Furthermore, research on SIAs is primarily based on English, which poses a challenge for Chinese SIAs because of cultural differences between English and Chinese. Therefore, we introduce a Chinese Natural Audiovisual Multimodal Database (CNAMD) corpus, the first and largest freely available Chinese multimodal database for multi-person interaction, containing 48 hours of videos and annotations across eight modalities. Using CNAMD, we analyze the characteristics of vocal-verbal, audio, behavioral, and multimodal combinations during questioning, test the performance of six baselines on three tasks, and propose improvements for processing daily Chinese data. The present findings will help designers consider Chinese customs and language when designing Chinese SIAs, making them more suitable for the Chinese cultural context and users.

Abstract:Conversational systems have come a long way since their inception in the 1960s. After decades of research and development, we've seen progress from Eliza and Parry in the 60's and 70's, to task-completion systems as in the DARPA Communicator program in the 2000s, to intelligent personal assistants such as Siri in the 2010s, to today's social chatbots like XiaoIce. Social chatbots' appeal lies not only in their ability to respond to users' diverse requests, but also in being able to establish an emotional connection with users. The latter is done by satisfying users' need for communication, affection, as well as social belonging. To further the advancement and adoption of social chatbots, their design must focus on user engagement and take both intellectual quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ) into account. Users should want to engage with a social chatbot; as such, we define the success metric for social chatbots as conversation-turns per session (CPS). Using XiaoIce as an illustrative example, we discuss key technologies in building social chatbots from core chat to visual awareness to skills. We also show how XiaoIce can dynamically recognize emotion and engage the user throughout long conversations with appropriate interpersonal responses. As we become the first generation of humans ever living with AI, we have a responsibility to design social chatbots to be both useful and empathetic, so they will become ubiquitous and help society as a whole.

Abstract:The rise of increasingly more powerful chatbots offers a new way to collect information through conversational surveys, where a chatbot asks open-ended questions, interprets a user's free-text responses, and probes answers whenever needed. To investigate the effectiveness and limitations of such a chatbot in conducting surveys, we conducted a field study involving about 600 participants. In this study with mostly open-ended questions, half of the participants took a typical online survey on Qualtrics and the other half interacted with an AI-powered chatbot to complete a conversational survey. Our detailed analysis of over 5200 free-text responses revealed that the chatbot drove a significantly higher level of participant engagement and elicited significantly better quality responses measured by Gricean Maxims in terms of their informativeness, relevance, specificity, and clarity. Based on our results, we discuss design implications for creating AI-powered chatbots to conduct effective surveys and beyond.

Abstract:This paper proposes the building of Xiaomingbot, an intelligent, multilingual and multimodal software robot equipped with four integral capabilities: news generation, news translation, news reading and avatar animation. Its system summarizes Chinese news that it automatically generates from data tables. Next, it translates the summary or the full article into multiple languages, and reads the multilingual rendition through synthesized speech. Notably, Xiaomingbot utilizes a voice cloning technology to synthesize the speech trained from a real person's voice data in one input language. The proposed system enjoys several merits: it has an animated avatar, and is able to generate and read multilingual news. Since it was put into practice, Xiaomingbot has written over 600,000 articles, and gained over 150,000 followers on social media platforms.

Abstract:News comment is a new text genre in the Web 2.0 era. Many people often write comments to express their opinions about recent news events or topics after they read news articles. Because news comments are freely written without checking, they are very different from formal news texts. In particular, named entities in news comments are usually composed of some wrongly written words, informal abbreviations or aliases, which brings great difficulties for machine detection and understanding. This paper addresses the task of named entity recognition in Chinese news comments on the Web. We propose to leverage the entity information in the referred news article to improve named entity recognition in the news comments. Three different schemes are investigated to find useful entities in the news article for new feature generation in the CRFs model. Finally, a dictionary-based correction step is employed to further improve the results. We manually labelled a benchmark dataset with 60 pieces of news and 6000 comments downloaded from a popular Chinese news portal – www.sina.com.cn. The experimental results on the dataset show that our method is effective for this special task.
Pchatbot: A Large-Scale Dataset for Personalized Chatbot

Abstract:Natural language dialogue systems raise great attention recently. As many dialogue models are data-driven, high-quality datasets are essential to these systems. In this paper, we introduce Pchatbot, a large-scale dialogue dataset that contains two subsets collected from Weibo and Judicial forums respectively. To adapt the raw dataset to dialogue systems, we elaborately normalize the raw dataset via processes such as anonymization, deduplication, segmentation, and filtering. The scale of Pchatbot is significantly larger than existing Chinese datasets, which might benefit the data-driven models. Besides, current dialogue datasets for personalized chatbot usually contain several persona sentences or attributes. Different from existing datasets, Pchatbot provides anonymized user IDs and timestamps for both posts and responses. This enables the development of personalized dialogue models that directly learn implicit user personality from the user's dialogue history. Our preliminary experimental study benchmarks several state-of-the-art dialogue models to provide a comparison for future work. The dataset can be publicly accessed at Github.

Abstract:Abstract Intelligent chatbot systems are popular issues in the application fields of robot system and natural language processing. As the development of natural language processing and neural network algorithms, the application of artificial intelligence is increasing in Chatbot systems, which are typically used in dialog systems for various practical purposes including customer service or information acquisition. This paper designs the functional framework and introduces the principle of RASA NLU for the Chatbot system, then it integrates RASA NLU and neural network (NN) methods and implements the system based on entity extraction after intent recognition. With the experimental comparison and validation, our developed system can realize automatic learning and answering the collected questions about finance. The system analysis of two methods also validate that RASA NLU outperforms NN in accuracy for a single experiment, but NN has better integrity to classify entities from segmented words.
Exploring the Impact of Anthropomorphism in Role-Playing AI Chatbots on Media Dependency: A Case Study of Xuanhe AI

Abstract:Powered by large language models, the conversational capabilities of AI have seen significant improvements. In this context, a series of role-playing AI chatbots have emerged, exhibiting a strong tendency toward anthropomorphism, such as conversing like humans, possessing personalities, and fulfilling social and companionship functions. Informed by media dependency theory in communication studies, this work hypothesizes that a higher level of anthropomorphism of the role-playing chatbots will increase users' media dependency (i.e., people will depend on media that meets their needs and goals). Specifically, we conducted a user study on a Chinese role-playing chatbot platform, Xuanhe AI, selecting four representative chatbots as research targets. We invited 149 users to interact with these chatbots over a period. A questionnaire survey revealed a significant positive correlation between the degree of anthropomorphism in role-playing chatbots and users' media dependency, with user satisfaction mediating this relationship. Next, based on the quantitative results, we conducted semi-structured interviews with ten users to further understand the factors that deterred them from depending on anthropomorphic chatbots. In conclusion, this work has provided empirical insights for the design of role-playing AI chatbots and deepened the understanding of how users engage with conversational AI over a longer period.

Detection of Hidden Feature Requests from Massive Chat Messages Via Deep Siamese Network

Abstract:Online chatting is gaining popularity and plays an increasingly significant role in software development. When discussing functionalities, developers might reveal their desired features to other developers. Automated mining techniques towards retrieving feature requests from massive chat messages can benefit the requirements gathering process. But it is quite challenging to perform such techniques because detecting feature requests from dialogues requires a thorough understanding of the contextual information, and it is also extremely expensive on annotating feature-request dialogues for learning. To bridge that gap, we recast the traditional text classification task of mapping single dialog to its class into the task of determining whether two dialogues are similar or not by incorporating few-shot learning. We propose a novel approach, named FRMiner, which can detect feature-request dialogues from chat messages via deep Siamese network. We design a BiLSTM-based dialog model that can learn the contextual information of a dialog in both forward and reverse directions. Evaluation on the realworld projects shows that our approach achieves average precision, recall and F1-score of 88.52%, 88.50% and 88.51%, which confirms that our approach could effectively detect hidden feature requests from chat messages, thus can facilitate gathering comprehensive requirements from the crowd in an automated way.

Abstract:Using chatbots to deliver recommendations is increasingly popular. The design of recommendation chatbots has primarily been taking an information-centric approach by focusing on the recommended content per se. Limited attention is on how social connection and relational strategies, such as self-disclosure from a chatbot, may influence users' perception and acceptance of the recommendation. In this work, we designed, implemented, and evaluated a social chatbot capable of performing three different levels of self-disclosure: factual information (low), cognitive opinions (medium), and emotions (high). In the evaluation, we recruited 372 participants to converse with the chatbot on two topics: movies and COVID-19 experiences. In each topic, the chatbot performed small talks and made recommendations relevant to the topic. Participants were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions where the chatbot used factual, cognitive, emotional, and adaptive strategies to perform self-disclosures. By training a text classifier to identify users' level of self-disclosure in real-time, the adaptive chatbot can dynamically match its self-disclosure to the level of disclosure exhibited by the users. Our results show that users reciprocate with higher-level self-disclosure when a recommendation chatbot consistently displays emotions throughout the conversation. Chatbot's emotional disclosure also led to increased interactional enjoyment and more positive interpersonal perception towards the bot, fostering a stronger human-chatbot relationship and thus leading to increased recommendation effectiveness, including a higher tendency to accept the recommendation. We discuss the understandings obtained and implications to future design.

Abstract:We demonstrate a video chatbot, which can generate human-level emotional comments referring to the videos shared by users and trigger a conversation with users. Our video chatbot performs a large-scale similar video search to find visually similar videos w.r.t. a given video using approximate nearest-neighbor search. Then, the comments associated with the searched similar videos are ranked by learning a deep multi-view embedding space for modeling video content, visual sentiment and textual comments. The top ranked comments are selected as responses to the given video and trigger the succeeding text-based chat between users and the chatbot. The demonstration is conducted on a newly collected dataset with over 102K videos and 10.6M comments. Moreover, our video chatbot has great potential to increase live social interactions.

Abstract:Developing chatbots as personal companions has long been a goal of artificial intelligence researchers. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have delivered a practical solution for endowing chatbots with anthropomorphic language capabilities. However, it takes more than LLMs to enable chatbots that can act as companions. Humans use their understanding of individual personalities to drive conversations. Chatbots also require this capability to enable human-like companionship. They should act based on personalized, real-time, and time-evolving knowledge of their owner. We define such essential knowledge as the \textit{common ground} between chatbots and their owners, and we propose to build a common-ground-aware dialogue system from an LLM-based module, named \textit{OS-1}, to enable chatbot companionship. Hosted by eyewear, OS-1 can sense the visual and audio signals the user receives and extract real-time contextual semantics. Those semantics are categorized and recorded to formulate historical contexts from which the user's profile is distilled and evolves over time, i.e., OS-1 gradually learns about its user. OS-1 combines knowledge from real-time semantics, historical contexts, and user-specific profiles to produce a common-ground-aware prompt input into the LLM module. The LLM's output is converted to audio, spoken to the wearer when appropriate.We conduct laboratory and in-field studies to assess OS-1's ability to build common ground between the chatbot and its user. The technical feasibility and capabilities of the system are also evaluated. OS-1, with its common-ground awareness, can significantly improve user satisfaction and potentially lead to downstream tasks such as personal emotional support and assistance.

Abstract:This paper explores the intersection of Otome Culture and artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on how Otome-oriented games fulfill the emotional needs of young women. These games, which are deeply rooted in a subcultural understanding of love, provide players with feelings of satisfaction, companionship, and protection through carefully crafted narrative structures and character development. With the proliferation of Large Language Models (LLMs), there is an opportunity to transcend traditional static game narratives and create dynamic, emotionally responsive interactions. We present a case study of Tears of Themis, where we have integrated LLM technology to enhance the interactive experience. Our approach involves augmenting existing game narratives with a Question and Answer (QA) system, enriched through data augmentation and emotional enhancement techniques, resulting in a chatbot that offers realistic and supportive companionship.

Abstract:The prevalence of chatbots in human-computer communication has significantly increased. Emojis, as a form of emotional disclosure, have gained significant attention for their potential to boost chatbot service satisfaction. However, how and when emoji usage can increase satisfaction toward chatbots is not fully examined. This paper aims to fill this gap and contribute to the rapidly evolving field of human-chatbot communication research. Through three experiments, this paper investigates and explores the role of emojis in enhancing chatbot interactions. The results reveal that emojis heighten chatbot's perceived warmth but do not necessarily augment their competence. This warmth promoting effect leads to boosted service satisfaction and is more apparent when chatbots serve hedonic purposes and are pre-programmed rather than highly autonomous. However, the warmth upshot of emojis is not as potent for chatbots as it is for humans. While this study unravels the intricate pathway of how emojis augment service satisfaction, it also extends the dialogue of the Stereotype Content Model (SCM) and propels the new wave of the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm. Thus, this research lays down pathways for further studies in understanding the role of emotionally simulated interactions in automated technologies.
Doc2Bot: Accessing Heterogeneous Documents via Conversational Bots

Abstract: This paper introduces Doc2Bot, a novel dataset for building machines that help users seek information via conversations. This is of particular interest for companies and organizations that own a large number of manuals or instruction books. Despite its potential, the nature of our task poses several challenges: (1) documents contain various structures that hinder the ability of machines to comprehend, and (2) user information needs are often underspecified. Compared to prior datasets that either focus on a single structural type or overlook the role of questioning to uncover user needs, the Doc2Bot dataset is developed to target such challenges systematically. Our dataset contains over 100,000 turns based on Chinese documents from five domains, larger than any prior document-grounded dialog dataset for information seeking. We propose three tasks in Doc2Bot: (1) dialog state tracking to track user intentions, (2) dialog policy learning to plan system actions and contents, and (3) response generation which generates responses based on the outputs of the dialog policy. Baseline methods based on the latest deep learning models are presented, indicating that our proposed tasks are challenging and worthy of further research.

Abstract:There is a resurgent interest in developing intelligent open-domain dialog systems due to the availability of large amounts of conversational data and the recent progress on neural approaches to conversational AI. Unlike traditional task-oriented bots, an open-domain dialog system aims to establish long-term connections with users by satisfying the human need for communication, affection, and social belonging. This paper reviews the recent works on neural approaches that are devoted to addressing three challenges in developing such systems: semantics, consistency, and interactiveness. Semantics requires a dialog system to not only understand the content of the dialog but also identify user's social needs during the conversation. Consistency requires the system to demonstrate a consistent personality to win users trust and gain their long-term confidence. Interactiveness refers to the system's ability to generate interpersonal responses to achieve particular social goals such as entertainment, conforming, and task completion. The works we select to present here is based on our unique views and are by no means complete. Nevertheless, we hope that the discussion will inspire new research in developing more intelligent dialog systems.
