Abstract:In online market, consumers tend to make use of other signals when assessing the product quality due to the aggravated information asymmetry. Taking the moderating effects of product involvement into account, this paper developed a research model to study the influence mechanism of product information presentation and seller reputation on consumers’ perceived product quality and purchase intension. A lab experiment was designed to prove the research model, in which 57 participants’ questionnaire data was collected and eye movement data was recorded by SMI Hi-speed eye tracker when they viewed the website. The results showed that perceived product information presentation and seller reputation positively influenced consumers’ perceived product quality which further more affected the willingness to buy, with the moderating effects of product involvement. More specifically, the impact of perceived product information presentation got weaker when seller reputation got higher for low-involvement product.

Abstract:The prosperity of online shopping has led e-commerce vendors to provide increasingly rich information, particularly for experience products, to enhance consumers' shopping experience and satisfaction. However, there is little awareness that consumers may not be able to process all the information available because of human beings' limited information processing capacity. Online shoppers could be easily confused when facing rich information, particularly when the amount of information greatly exceeds their processing capacity. In contrast to previous research which has focused on the formatting of information or user interfaces to solve the information overload problem, this study explores a new solution based on the role of unconscious thought. Integrating information processing theory and the unconscious thought theory, the current study examines the different roles of information quantity, information quality and thought mode in consumers' decision satisfaction, in the presence of rich information. Our results show that unconscious thought moderates the relationship between information quality and consumer satisfaction towards their decision making when shopping experience products online, and is thus worthy of special attention in the design of e-commerce websites. The study contributes to both unconscious thought theory and information processing theory by exploring the interaction effect of the quantity and quality of information with thought mode in affecting the quality of purchasing decisions.

Abstract:This study focuses on gender differences in the influence of online communication on e-commerce purchase decision strategies. From the literature, we deduce a new theoretical model based on three foundational theories and design a 2 ∗ 2 mixed factorial experiment to test the influence of online communication in cases with and without online communication. This involves analyzing screen-recording data to check the effect of shopping behavior initiation, and using questionnaire research to test differences in the user experience before and after such communication. Finally, we concluded that the influence of online communication differs between men and women, and the influence is largely positive to both males and females.

Abstract:With e-Commerce activities burgeoning over the last decades, consumers have seemingly been switching their purchases from the physical marketplace to the Internet marketspace. However, it remains skeptical as to why the consumers are able to make purchase decisions in lack of personally experiencing the products. This study, on the basis of the Engel-Kollat-Blackwell Consumer Purchase Behavior Model (the EKB Model), attempted to explore the effects of the information search behavior in the context of the digital age on consumer decision making when buying apparel via the Internet. The sample consists of 344 with experience of buying apparel products via the Internet, and they were recruited from one of the most popular local online forums, in answer to the questionnaire by recall method. The study found that the information search behavior is related to the decision making, particularly in terms of fame information, visual information, comparison information, e-word-of-mouth information, and promotional information. Moreover, the results proved that personality traits, to some extent, affected the information search and decision making, except for the effects of the performance risk and the personal risk on the decision making.
Solving the Information Overload Problem: the Role of Unconscious Thought in Enhancing Online Purchasing Decisions.

As human beings have a limited capacity to process information, online shoppers are easily confused when facing rich information, particularly when the information greatly exceeds their processing capacity. In contrast to previous research, which has focused on the formatting of appropriate information or user interfaces to solve the overload problem, this study explored a new solution based on the role of unconscious as opposed to conscious thought. By combining perspectives from the Unconscious Thought Theory.and Information Processing Theory in a unified model, we examined the role of thinking mode in consumers’ decision satisfaction, as well as information processing factors that affect the efficiency of unconscious thought in the presence of rich information. Results show that unconscious thought is an effective way to solve the information overload problem and is thus worthy of special attention in the design of e-commerce web pages. The study also contributes to both unconscious thought theory and information processing theory by exploring the interaction of the quality and quantity of information with thinking mode in affecting the quality of purchasing decisions.
Impact of recommender systems on unplanned purchase behaviours in e-commerce

Abstract:The emergence of the Chinese online marketplace has stimulated the increasing popularity of recommender systems among websites as a tool that assists consumers to reduce information overload. This study proposes a framework that employs a user-cantered approach to evaluate the impact of recommender systems on unplanned purchase behaviours of Chinese consumers in e-commerce. Multi-item scales are adopted from the literature and used to measure five constructs, namely, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, shopping enjoyment, consumer satisfaction, and unplanned purchase behaviour. The final samples comprised 281 usable Chinese respondents in both gender groups via online survey. Structural equation modelling technique is employed to test all hypotheses. Results show that perceived usefulness plays a leading role in influencing impulse buying. Apart from having a direct and positive effect on unplanned purchase behaviours, perceived usefulness indirectly contributes to impulse buying by affecting consumer satisfaction, which is also essential to promoting unplanned purchases.

Abstract:Online shopping or purchasing is a human activity where people buy goods, products, or services through the Internet. In this time, individuals are increasingly transitioning to online shopping or purchasing alongside the development of different websites (Tsai, Janice, & Egelman, 2001) . The objective of this research is to explore the characteristics of online purchasing behaviors, factors affecting these behaviors, and the extent of the impact of these factors in JD.com, which is one of China’s biggest and largest online purchasing platforms (JD.com, n.d.) . The respondents of this research were individuals who are customers of JD.com or individuals who have the experiences or intention of purchasing on the same platform. The qualitative analysis of this research reveals that four characteristics of online purchasing behavior in the case of JD.com are present. First, the customers of online purchasing in JD.com pay more attention to the quality of the goods. Second, the price is the most important factor. The results of the multiple linear regression model and principal component analysis show that there are three indirect factors of online purchasing behaviors. These are the affect factors, social factors, and perceived risk factors. These three factors influence online purchasing behaviors through influencing online purchasing intention. Moreover, there are also three direct factors of online purchasing behaviors. These are the habits, facilitating conditions, and online purchasing intentions. Further, results show that the influences of all six factors are significant. In conclusion, JD.com and other online shopping platforms can use the result of this research and pay attention to the six factors affecting online purchasing behaviors to improve a company’s services and increase the number of its customers.

Abstract:Purpose This study investigates the relationship between buyers’ psychological antecedent and repurchase intentions in online group buying. Considering and evaluating pre-purchase, the authors measure the buyers’ overall experience of online group buying through their perceived value (PV) and risk. This study examines the influence of PV and perceived risk (PR) on positive electronic word-of-mouth (eWoM) communication and repurchase intention in online group buying. Design/methodology/approach The authors verify the research model using SPSS and the structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) to analyze 839 convincing respondents. This quantitative research provides insights into online group buying, including the food industry. Findings The results demonstrate that the buyers’ PV of online group buying enhanced positive eWoM communication and repurchase intention. The willingness of buyers to spread positive eWoM indicates their recognition and satisfaction with a product or brand. Thus, they have the behavioral intention to repurchase in online group buying. The study found that while positive eWoM communication significantly impacts repurchase intention, PR negatively affects PV. The research provides theoretical and practical implications at the end of the study. Research limitations/implications This study has some limitations. First, the study only used PV and PR to measure consumers’ considerations and evaluations of the initial stage in the consumer decision journey. Future studies can include more dimensions that may further affect these considerations and assessments to verify the research model. Second, the study only used positive eWoM communication to measure the “enjoy-advocate-bond” of consumption and usage in the post-purchase stage. Originality/value The study proposes the sequential relationship in the psychological decision procedure of participating in online group buying and provides valuable managerial implications for managers operating online group buying on third-party platforms. The findings provide good knowledge for the food industry to stay connected with customers and develop their satisfaction.

Abstract:Understanding the roles of social factors in online purchase behavior has been a long standing research problem. The recently emerging social e-commerce platforms leverage the stimulated word-of-mouth effect to promote the sales of items, which offers a peek into the complex interplay between the social influence and online purchasing behavior. In this paper, we investigate this problem on a full-scale purchase behavior dataset from one of the leading social e-commerce platforms, Beidian. Specifically, we conduct a comparison study between the social e-commerce and conventional e-commerce that are both integrated in Beidian to examine how social factors affect user's purchase behavior. We reveal that social e-commerce leads to a 3.09~10.37 times higher purchase conversion rate compared with the conventional settings, which indicates users make purchase with significantly fewer item explorations. Then, we propose and validate four primary mechanisms that contribute to the efficient purchase conversion: better matching, social enrichment, social proof and price sensitivity. Moreover, we identify several behavioral indicators that are able to measure the effect of these mechanisms, based on which we design an accurate predictive model (AUC=0.7738) for user's purchase decision. These results combine to shed light on how to understand and model the purchase behavior in social e-commerce.
Understanding Purchase Intention in O2O E-Commerce: The Effects of Trust Transfer and Online Contents

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of trust transfer and online contents on purchase intention in the online-to-offline e-commerce. A partial least squares based structural equation model was utilized to test the framework of causality and a series of multivariate analyses of variance were conducted to test the effects of online content size. The partial least squares results indicate that trust transfer from online-to-offline platforms to offline merchants, perceived effectiveness of online product reviews as well as perceived effectiveness of numerical ratings positively influence trust in merchants directly and purchase intention indirectly, while perceived effectiveness of online production descriptions shows no significant effect. The multivariate analyses of variance results confirm the positive effects of review number and picture number on customer trust toward merchants and purchase intention. The multivariate analyses of variance results also support the positive effects of review length when a merchant has a high review balance. This research contributes to e-commerce and behavior literature by investigating how trust transfer and online contents engage customers and induce their purchase behaviors in online-to-offline commerce. It also assists leading a better online-to-offline outcome for online-to-offline platforms and offline merchants in the highly competitive online-to-offline markets.

Abstract:With the acceleration of China's urbanization and the increasing number of household appliances, the promotion of energy-saving products has attracted widespread attention. However, the influence of online reviews on energy-saving products, especially the influence of energy-efficiency-related textual reviews, has not been elucidated. Drawing upon product information and consumer comments from one of China's largest e-commerce platforms, we covered 1188 products and over 600,000 corresponding online textual reviews. After categorizing the textual reviews, we constructed a dictionary of energy-saving attitude. Based on an elaboration likelihood model (ELM), this study analyzes the influence of energy-saving related e-WOM on product sales by a linear regression model. With an intermediary role in consideration, this study also demonstrates the influence mechanism of online reviews on purchase decision through the central route (the effects of gross sentiment, e-WOM and review tag on product sales) and peripheral route (the effects of star rating and review numbers on product sales) in ELM. The results show that both the online reviews and the rating scores of energy star have a strong influence on product sales in a short period of time. The gross sentiment of an online review can influence product sales, which is wholly affected by the intermediary role of the star rating. The central route can also influence product sales indirectly through the peripheral route.

Abstract:With the booming development of the Internet and mobile devices, there has been a huge shift in consumer attitudes and consumption patterns. Consumers nowadays perfectly combine rational consumption and emotional life, and are prudent and cautious in their consumption, consciously weighing their consumption choices. In the era of mobile Internet, online and offline channels are cross-fertilised, and consumers tend to search and compare online and offline to make decisions on purchasing channels. This paper empirically analyses the data using questionnaire survey method and structural equation modeling, and the analysis results show that: online and offline cross-experience has a significant positive effect on shopping channel choice intention; online and offline cross-experience has a significant positive effect on structural assurance; structural assurance positively affects shopping channel choice intention; structural assurance mediates between online and offline cross-experience and consumers' shopping channel choice intention; online and offline cross-experience has a positive effect on consumer empowerment; consumer empowerment positively affects consumers' willingness to choose shopping channels; consumer empowerment mediates the relationship between online and offline cross-experience and consumers' willingness to choose shopping channels; channel consistency positively moderates the relationship between structural assurance, consumer empowerment and consumers' willingness to choose shopping channels.

Abstract:Few studies in the literature on electronic commerce provide empirical investigation of consumer behavior in the international online shopping context. This study identifies and discusses factors that influence international online purchases and profile the characteristics of those who purchase and those who do not purchase from online stores overseas in three main categories: the online shopping experiential factors, the international shopping motivational factors, and the international trust attitudinal factors. The international online shoppers tend to highly trust foreign vendors and have high preference of and confidence in online shopping. More importantly, these shoppers are knowledge of shopping sites' hosting countries and strongly believe in those sites' global propensity. The paper makes contributions towards new knowledge and understanding of how international online shoppers differ from non-shoppers.

Abstract:Abstract The number of consumers shopping and making purchases online continues to grow. Consumers make online purchases largely for goal‐oriented reasons; in particular, shopping online is convenient and accessible, provides rich information, offers extended selection and inventory, and can be accomplished without contact with others, including retail sales help or shopping partners such as spouses and children. Although most online shopping is goal‐oriented, some consumers shop experientially online at auction sites and at sites related to special interests or hobbies. The U.S. population can be segmented “technographically” into 10 groups utilizing three consumer attributes: (a) attitude toward technology, (b) income, and (c) primary motivation for using the Internet—career, family, and community or entertainment. We review the importance of several online shopping attributes, including web site design (usability, information availability, product selection, and appropriate personalization), fulfillment, customer service, and privacy/security.
Effect of Instant Messenger Use on Purchase Decision of Consumers: The Role of Communication Quality and Content.

Abstract:The uncertainty brought by the separation of information flow and product flow has become an important obstacle to the development of e-commerce. An increasing number of e-commerce websites have chosen to adopt an instant messenger (e.g., Wangwang) in the website as a communication tool between buyers and sellers to reduce this uncertainty. Based on uncertainty reduction theory, the relationship between the use of an instant messenger and the purchase decision of consumers is explored. Logit regression models were used to analyze the secondary data collected from a seller on Taobao.com, and the following findings are determined: (1) Customers who use Wangwang tend to purchase, and the effect of Wangwang use on purchase decisions is stronger for consumers who are indirect visitors. (2) The more quickly and more frequently sellers reply to questions, the more likely customers are to make purchase decisions. (3) Communicating about contents related to product quality in the conversation is positively associated with the consumer’s purchase decision. (4) The negative effect of product fit-related contents to purchase decision will be mitigated if it is not the first conversation between consumers and sellers.
'Like walking on eggshells': Service user views and expectations of the child protection system

Abstract:This paper reports on a study of service users' views on Irish child protection services. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 67 service users, including young people between 13 and 23. The findings showed that despite refocusing and public service management reforms, service users still experience involvement with the services as intimidating and stressful and while they acknowledged opportunities to participate in the child protection process, they found the experience to be very difficult. Their definition of ‘needs’ was somewhat at odds with that suggested in official documentation, and they viewed the execution of a child protection plan more as a coercive requirement to comply with ‘tasks’ set by workers than a conjoint effort to enhance their children's welfare. As in previous studies, the data showed how the development of good relationships between workers and service users could compensate for the harsher aspects of involvement with child protection. In addition, this study demonstrated a high level of discernment on the part of service users, highlighting their expectation of quality standards in respect of courtesy, respect, accountability, transparency and practitioner expertise.

Abstract:The e-commerce market is experiencing a period of rapid growth, with online shopping becoming a prevalent consumer behavior. However, the challenge of identifying and segmenting high-value customer groups, and subsequently enhancing the conversion rate of purchases made on the shop's platform, has remained a significant obstacle for merchants engaged in e-commerce. This study presents a novel approach that combines consumer involvement theory, quality signaling theory and consumer heterogeneity theory to develop a multi-algorithmic, interpretable machine learning model based on shapely additive explanations (SHAP). The results revealed the existence of four distinct consumer groups: the comprehensively involved, interactive, reading-oriented, and low-involvement groups. Comprehensively involved and interactive consumers have the highest purchase conversion rate and should be given priority attention. This study addresses the limitations of single theoretical perspective and "black box" problem of machine learning models for decision-making behavior, and can bring management insights for merchants to improve shop operation.

Abstract:As online shopping proliferates, many studies have investigated its impact on travel. Most studies, however, treat online shopping as a transaction channel and overlook its interaction with physical shopping at various stages of the shopping process. Using adult internet users in Nanjing, China, this study explores the interactions between online shopping and traditional shopping for search goods (books) and experience goods (clothing) during the shopping process. The results show that experience goods have a stronger stickiness combination between pre-purchase channels and transaction channels than search goods. As a pre-purchase channel for experience goods, stores are more likely to promote cross-channel than internet shopping; the relationship is the opposite for search goods.

Abstract:The progress of information technology and the popularity of the Internet have led to the rapid development of the network economy, and as a new shopping method, online shopping is gradually accepted and respected by consumers. With the development and maturity of online shopping market, the concept of consumers has also been changing, gradually changing from "panning for cheap" and "panning for convenience" to "panning for quality," paying more attention to the quality of goods and services. B2C is more trusted by consumers than C2C in terms of reputation and quality assurance, so it has gradually become a hot spot in online shopping. With the popularization of online shopping, the development of e-commerce is increasingly characterized by the platform, and it is more and more difficult for shopping websites to attract online consumers with rich product information and functions alone. Using college students with online shopping experience in T-mall as the research subjects, descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were used to study the influence of interactivity on customers' behavioral intention under the platform-based model from a perception perspective.
