Abstract:We report experimental observation of multimode Q-switching and spatiotemporal mode locking in a multimode fiber laser. A typical steady Q-switching state is achieved with a 1.88 μs pulse duration, a 70.14 kHz repetition rate, and a 215.8 mW output power, corresponding to the single pulse energy of 3.08 μJ. We find weak spatial filtering is essential to obtain stable Q-switched pulses, in contrast to the relatively stronger spatial filtering for spatiotemporal mode locking. Furthermore, a reversible transition process, as well as a critical bistable state, between multimode Q-switching and spatiotemporal mode locking, is achieved with specific spatial coupling and waveplates sets. We believe the results will not only contribute to understanding the complicated nonlinear dynamics in multimode, fiber-based platforms, but also benefit the development of promising high-pulse energy lasers.

Abstract:Harnessing complexity in laser light The development of lasers and the quality of the output light has been crucially dependent on understanding and being able to control the process occurring within the laser-generating cavity. In a real laser cavity, there are both longitudinal and transverse modes; for the highest-quality lasers, reducing the effects of the latter has been standard practice. However, using a graded index fiber cavity, Wright et al. demonstrate that the longitudinal and transverse modes can be locked to provide an output of complex coherent light. Abstract:Multimode fiber (MMF) lasers are emerging as a remarkable testbed to study nonlinear spatiotemporal physics with potential applications spanning from high energy pulse generation, precision measurement to nonlinear microscopy. The underlying mechanism for the generation of ultrashort pulses, which can be understood as a spatiotempoal dissipative soliton (STDS), in the nonlinear multimode resonators is the spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) with simultaneous synchronization of temporal and spatial modes. In this review, we first introduce the general principles of STML, with an emphasize on the STML dynamics with large intermode dispersion. Then, we present the recent progress of STML, including measurement techniques for STML, exotic nonlinear dynamics of STDS, and mode field engineering in MMF lasers. We conclude by outlining some perspectives that may advance STML in the near future.

Abstract:Multimode fibers (MMFs) have attracted interest because of their larger mode area and additional spatial degrees of freedom compared with single-mode fibers. Recently, MMFs have been introduced into mode-locked lasers for new cavity structures with better laser performance. Among these lasers, there are two remarkable cases in which MMFs are the key components for mode-locking: One is using a short segment of the MMF as a saturable absorber (SA), which has the advantages of high damage threshold, wide operating bandwidth, and low cost. The other is the construction of multimode cavities with MMFs. Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML), a general form of mode-locking, can be achieved in such cavities. Herein, we review these two types of mode-locked lasers with MMFs. The principles of MMF-based SA and STML are described based on the common theory of multimode nonlinear fiber optics. Subsequently, we present a detailed overview of the recent progress regarding these lasers, including lasers mode-locked by MMF-based SAs at the 1-, 1.5-, and 2-μm bands, as well as spatiotemporal mode-locked MMF lasers. A perspective for the development of mode-locked lasers with MMFs is also provided.

Abstract:Passive mode-locking based on saturable absorbers (SAs) is an effective way to generate ultrafast pulses, while the spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) based on SAs are rarely studied. We construct an all-fiber laser with InP quantum dots (QDs) SA, and realize multi-mode Q-switching (MMQS) and STML. In addition, by adjusting the polarization controller (PC) in the laser cavity, we obtain two different single-pulse STML states. The narrowest pulse widths of the two states are 57 ps and 32 ps, respectively, and the pulse width can be tuned continuously with increasing the pump power. By decoupling the effects of the PC and the SA in our experiment, we find that the polarization plays a key role in the selection of transverse modes. The effect of independent polarization on spatiotemporal mode-locked pulses has not been investigated before. To further analyze and understand the experimental results, we numerically solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and compare the numerical simulation with the experimental results. In addition to passively adjusting cavity loss, the InP QD SA can balance the large walk off between different transverse modes, due to the spatial and spectral filtering effects. Our work has important implications for the design and application of all-fiber STML lasers.

Abstract:The characteristics of a Q-switched ytterbium-doped double-clad (YDDC) fiber laser are presented. Due to the self-mode-locking effect in the Q-switching process, the Q-switched pulses split up. Their initiation and evolution are experimentally analyzed, and the mechanism is detailed. Based on the proposed mechanism, an effective model is developed to simulate this Q-switched YDDC fiber laser and to reconstruct simultaneously Q-switched and mode-locked pulses. The simulated results agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Ultrafast lasers based on multimode fibers have attracted extensive attention owing to the large mode-field area and nonlinear tolerance. The high spatial degree of freedom of multimode fibers is significant for spatiotemporal pulses locked both in transverse and longitudinal modes, where the energy of output pulses can be remarkably improved. Herein, the 1.5-μm all-fiber spatiotemporal mode-locked laser was realized based on carbon nanotubes as a saturable absorber. Moreover, by tuning the polarization controller and the pump power carefully, the output wavelengths can be ranged from 1529 to 1565 nm based on the multimode interference filter. In addition, Q-switched mode-locking and spatiotemporal mode-locked dual combs were also observed by further adjusting the polarization controller. Such a kind of an all-fiber multimode laser offers a crucial insight into the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics, which is of great significance in scientific research and practical applications.

Abstract:Intermodal dispersion and modal instability have been the primary challenges for achieving spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) in multimode fiber. This paper utilizes the nonlinear multimode interference effect to redistribute the mode energy and suppress the intermodal dispersion. By building on this approach and combining it with cavity-induced modulation instability (CIMI), we experimentally demonstrate the STML pulse with a high repetition frequency of 1.116 GHz, corresponding to a harmonic order of 93. Our research not only significantly expands the application of spatiotemporal mode-locked lasers in high repetition frequency systems, but also provides valuable insights for further understanding the dynamics of spatiotemporal mode-locking.

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate a high-energy, wide-spectrum, spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) fiber laser. Unlike traditional single-mode fiber lasers, STML fiber lasers theoretically enable mode-locking with various combinations of transverse modes. The laser can deliver two different STML pulse sequences with different pulse widths, spectra and beam profiles, due to the different compositions of transverse modes in the output pulses. Moreover, we achieve a wide-spectrum pulsed output with a single-pulse energy of up to 116 nJ, by weakening the spectral filtering and utilizing self-cleaning. Strong spatial and spectral filtering are usually thought to be necessary for achieving STML. Our experiment verifies the necessity of spatial filtering for achieving STML, and we show that weakening unnecessary spectral filtering provides an effective way to increase the pulse energy and spectrum width of mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode locking is a nonlinear process of multimode soliton self-organization. Here the real-time buildup dynamics of the multiple solitons in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber laser are investigated, assisted by the time-stretch technique. We find that the buildup processes are transverse mode dependent, especially during the stages of relaxation oscillation and Q -switching prior to multiple soliton formation. Furthermore, we observe that the transverse modal composition of these generated pulses among the multiple solitons can be different from each other, indicating the spatiotemporal structure of the multiple soliton. A simplified theoretical model based on pulse energy evolution is put forward to interpret the role of 3D saturable absorber on spatiotemporal structures of spatiotemporal mode-locking multiple solitons. Our work has presented the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in multimode fiber lasers, which are novel to those inside the single transverse mode fiber lasers. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) in fiber lasers has attracted significant attention due to its wide scientific and industrial applications, and achieved great progress in the near-infrared wavelength range. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally a mid-infrared (MIR) STML laser based on a step-index multimode Er:ZBLAN fiber. The laser adopts a short linear cavity mode-locked by a large-relaxation-time saturable absorber, and generates stable 78.6 ps pulses at 2.79 μm with a repetition rate of 79.8 MHz. Through adjustment of the coupling condition, a wide variety of STML states are observed. Numerical simulations show that the modal dispersion is counteracted by the spatial filtering effect alone. This work provides a simple scheme for MIR fiber lasers to achieve STML, and helps to understand the underlying nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:A 976-nm pulse-type switchable mode-locked fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, with a single mode fiber-graded index multimode fiber-single mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) structure-based saturable absorber (SA). The GIMF is bent into a given state to strengthen its effect on establishing mode-locking. By adjusting the intra-cavity polarization controller, the switching between dissipative solitons (DSs) and noise-like pulses (NLPs) can be achieved. Meanwhile, we also realize a second harmonic mode-locking (HML) in the same laser cavity. The laser provides a solution to realize 976 nm mode-locking operation with a simple and low-cost configuration and can serve as a potential tool for various applications.

Abstract:Intermodal dispersion is the main problem restricting the establishment and stability of spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) in the anomalous dispersion region. In the experiment, we employ the multimode Er-Yb double-clad fiber to carry out the multimode operation as a gain medium. The nonlinear multimode interference is used to enhance the mode coupling and spatial filtering in the cavity, achieve the purpose of suppressing the intermodal dispersion, and successfully realize the 1550 nm spatiotemporal noise-like solitons of Mamyshev oscillator based on the multimode gain fiber. The noise-like spatiotemporal soliton pulse energy reaches ∼ 171.29 nJ, and the corresponding peak power is ∼ 30.32 kW. The intermodal dispersion suppression based on nonlinear multimode interference performance makes this laser an attractive tool for practical applications.

Abstract:Relying on the nonlinear multimode interference in multimode fibers and the nonlinear polarization rotation, these two mode-locked techniques are combined in our proposed fiber laser. Stable optical soliton and multi-pulse regimes with a constant frequency of 11.44 MHz have been generated experimentally. Through altering intra-cavity conditions, bound-state pulses with diverse properties are observed. To the best of our knowledge, the obtained bound-state pulse constituted by more than thirty sub-pulses is achieved for the first time. Moreover, the center wavelength of bound-state pulse could be switched in a certain range covering the entire C band.

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers exhibit complex nonlinear dynamics. Precise observation of these dynamics will aid in the understanding of the underlying physics and provide new insights for laser design and applications. The starting dynamics, from initial noise fluctuations to the mode-locking regime, have previously been observed directly by time-stretched transform-based real-time spectroscopy. However, the regime transition dynamics, which are essential processes in mode-locked lasers, have not yet been resolved because regime transition process tracking is very challenging. Here we demonstrate the real-time observation of the regime transition dynamics enabled by our design of a real-time programmable mode-locked fiber laser, in which different operating regimes can be achieved and switched automatically. The regime transition dynamics among initial noise fluctuations, Q-switching, fundamental mode-locking and harmonic mode-locking regimes have been observed and thoroughly analyzed by both temporal and spectral means. These findings enrich our understanding of the complex dynamics inside mode-locked lasers.

Abstract:Triple different operation regimes like passive Q-switched (PQS), Q-switched mode-locking (QSML) and continuous-wave mode-locking (CWML) are experimentally observed as progressive pulse dynamics in a mode-locked fiber laser, which is constructed with several-meters of cascaded small-core erbium/bismuth co-doped fiber (EBCF) to engineer the cavity loss modulation. The pulse fission evolution from PQS to QSML to CWML operation is flexibly achieved through pump power variation as the only control parameter at fixed polarization orientation. Output characteristics in all triple operation regimes are studied in detail and particularly the pulse transitional process between PQS and QSML is reported experimentally for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The laser pulse formation criteria for different operation regimes are also theoretically analyzed. The obtained results and analysis disclose the complete pulses evolution process from PQS to QSML to CWML operation, which contribute to further understanding of the complex laser pulses evolution dynamics and formation mechanism in a passively mode-locked fiber laser.
