Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Particle-like structures of solitons, as a result of the balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, enable remarkable elastic and inelastic soliton collisions in many fields. Despite the experimental observation of temporal vector-soliton collisions in birefringent fibers, collision dynamics of vector solitons in fiber lasers have not been revealed before, to the best of our knowledge. Here, the real-time spectral evolutions of vector solitons during collisions in a dual-comb fiber laser, which generates vector solitons with slightly different repetition rates, are captured by a time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique. We record the whole process of vector-soliton collisions, including the formation of weak pulses induced by cross-polarization coupling, opposite central wavelength shifts of both vector solitons, distinct intensity redistribution and dissipative energy, and gradual recovery to initial states. Furthermore, extreme collisions with strong four-wave mixing sidebands are observed by virtue of coherent coupling between the orthogonal polarization components of vector solitons. Numerical simulations match well with the experimental observations. The experimental and numerical evidences of vector-soliton collision dynamics could give insight into the understanding of nonlinear dynamics in fiber lasers and other physical systems, as well as the improvement of laser performance for application in dual-comb spectroscopy. Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Optical solitons in ultrafast fiber lasers, as a result of dual balances between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as gain and loss, enable various soliton interactions. Soliton collisions are among the most intriguing soliton interactions, which fuel the understanding for particle-like properties of solitons. Here, we experimentally investigate the transient dynamics of collisions between a two-soliton molecule and a soliton singlet in a mode-locked fiber laser. By means of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, the evolving spectral interferograms of different collision scenarios are measured in real time. In particular, the "quasi-elastic" collision is observed, which shows that the soliton-molecule state remains unaltered after the collision and the group-velocity difference between the soliton molecule and the singlet is changed. It is directly demonstrated that a bond exchange occurs between the colliding solitons. By tuning the intra-cavity polarization controller, the dynamic processes of other collision outcomes, including the annihilation of a soliton in the soliton molecule as well as the formation of a stable unequally spaced soliton triplet, are also revealed. Our work facilitates a deeper understanding of soliton collision dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:Polarization-multiplexed dual-comb fiber lasers enable significant applications in dual-comb spectroscopy and optical sensing. However, the complexity of the underlying formation dynamics of dual-comb solitons has not been unveiled so far. Here, we capture the real-time spectral evolutions of both vector solitons from the initial fluctuations, with the help of the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique. Both vector solitons experience the relaxation oscillation, quasi-mode-locking, beating dynamics, and mode locking, accompanying central wavelength shifts in opposite directions, which might be induced by the gain saturation during their buildup processes. Moreover, polarization-dependent gain in the gain fiber leads to the different buildup time of both vector solitons. Our findings open new perspectives for dual-comb buildup dynamics and might impact laser design for applications. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Sinusoidal spectral filtering (SSF) plays an essential role in dual- and multi-wavelength operations in mode-locked fiber lasers. However, the impact of SSF on the underlying soliton dynamics has not been systematically revealed so far. Herein, we investigate numerically the SSF-based soliton dynamics in mode-locked fiber lasers. SSF could facilitate the formation of dual-wavelength mode locking, and the generation of dual-comb solitons with slightly different group velocities. Pulse shaping based on SSF and gain filtering leads to the non-monotonic relationship between both solitons’ group velocity difference and the cavity gain. In addition, dual-comb soliton mode locking exhibits threshold feature and multi-pulse instability to soliton annihilation and diverse soliton coexistences. Our investigations could shade new light on the SSF-based soliton dynamics and might bring new insights into the laser design and applications.

Abstract:The single-shot spectral dynamics of dual-color-soliton collisions inside a mode-locked laser is experimentally and numerically investigated. By using the all-optically dispersive Fourier transform, we spectrally unveil the collision-induced soliton self-reshaping process, which features dynamic spectral fringes over the soliton main lobe, and the rebuilding of Kelly sidebands with wavelength drifting. Meanwhile, the numerical simulations validate the experimental observation and provide additional insights into the physical mechanism of the collision-induced spectral dynamics from the temporal domain perspective. It is verified that the dynamic interference between the soliton and the dispersive waves is responsible for the observed collision-induced spectral evolution. These dynamic phenomena not only demonstrate the role of dispersive waves in the sophisticated soliton interaction inside the laser cavity, but also facilitate a deeper understanding of the soliton's inherent stability.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers, which have been widely utilized to generate ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond level, can be regarded as the next-generation laser source due to the advantages of high beam quality, high efficiency, etc. On the other hand, ultrafast mode-locking fiber lasers can provide an excellent platform for observing a variety of nonlinear dynamics. Although some steady state phenomena had been observed theoretically and experimentally, many interesting and important transient dynamics properties can only be theoretically predicted, and some are unpredictable. The main reason is that these ultrafast nonlinear dynamics are unrepeatable and have complex transformation in temporal and spectral domain, which cannot be resolved by the current technologies. In recent years, researchers have proposed time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique [1]-[6] to measure the transient, nonrepeat events. This technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, thus provide an elegant way to obtain real-time, single-shot spectrum measurements of ultrafast optical phenomena. Up to now, this technique has helped scientists to experimentally resolve the entire formation dynamics [2], [3] and localized transient dynamics of solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers [4]-[6]. Besides, a temporal magnifier technique, also known as time lens, was employed to microimaging the ultrafast phenomena in recent years. This technique has been successfully applied to study the real-time full-field characterization of soliton dynamics in mode-locked laser [7], [8].

Abstract:We present an experimental study of complex dissipative solitons dynamics in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Recently, thanks to real-time spectroscopy techniques such as the dispersive Fourier transform (DFT), it has been possible to study the complex internal dynamics of soliton molecules. However, most of the works have been limited to the study of intermolecular or intramolecular dynamics involving a small number of solitons within a single compact soliton packet, to which the DFT technique applies naturally. In this work, we study the dynamics of complex arrangements of multiple solitons, extending the analysis to regimes where multiple soliton packets at different wavelengths coexist and interact in the cavity, probing simultaneously the internal dynamics of various short-lived soliton molecules, as well as the collective dynamics of the different soliton packets distributed in the cavity, all of which is made possible by simultaneous analysis in the temporal and spectral domains. This allows to relate temporal dynamics at different time scales, as well as temporal and spectral events. In particular, we report the experimental observation of the dynamics of the Kelly sidebands that flank the soliton spectra, and relate it to temporal and spectral events such as extinctions of soliton packets with pulsating amplitude, spectral narrowing, and with energy fluctuations.

Abstract:In mode-locked fiber lasers, the formation of ultrashort pulses from noisy or unstable states is a crucial area of research. Investigating these complex nonlinear dynamics can lead to valuable insights and new practical engineering techniques, particularly for the design and optimization of optical systems. Time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform, utilized in our study to investigate dissipative solitons formation in a net-normal dispersion nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locked fiber laser, provides a window into the intricate dynamics of such systems. In our experiments, the identification of five distinct transient stages in the formation process sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of dissipative soliton (DS) formation. The five distinct transient stages involved in the formation process include relaxation oscillation, modulation instability, spectral broadening, soliton explosions (SEs), and stable mode-locking. Notably, we also observed the generation of dissipative rogue waves during the SE stage. Our findings shed light on the intricate dynamics of DS formation and offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:Because of the complexity and difficulty of realizing a multi-wavelength soliton state, reports on its internal dynamic characteristics are scarce. In this study, the switching and periodic soliton explosion processes of the multi-wavelength soliton state in a negative dispersion passively mode-locked fiber laser are realized. The generation of the multi-wavelength soliton state undergoes the process of noise, oscillation, and stable mode-locking, and the splitting and annihilation of solitons with different group velocities directly impact the generation and disappearance of three wavelengths. Positive and negative dispersion lead to different group velocities of solitons. The presence and displacement of solitons with different group velocities cause soliton collisions, which lead to soliton explosions. A soliton experiences relative phase oscillation, chaos, and oscillation, as well as convergence and separation before and after an explosion. With an increase in parameters related to pump power, single-soliton oscillation, multi-wavelength solitons, and chaos are found in experiments and simulations, proving the relevance and reliability between simulation and experimental results. This work promotes the dynamical study of multi-soliton collisions in nonlinear science and the development of chaos theory in multi-comb lasers.

Abstract:Recent discovery on scalarvector features of ultrashort pulses sheds new light on the polarization dynamics of ultrafast fibre lasers. Here, we report on the generation of scalar and vector solitons in a bidirectional fibre laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Through introducing different polarization evolving mechanisms into the counter-propagation branches, the fibre laser respectively approaches the scalar-soliton regime and vector-soliton regime in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions. It is found that the strong local birefringence facilitates the energy to flow between two orthogonal polarization directions, consequently inducing the pulse evolution toward vector solitons even against obvious polarization discrimination effect introduced by the NPR mode-locking mechanism. Furthermore, the polarization resolved measurement is implemented to both analyze the scalarvector feature of the emitted solitons and realize the manipulation of vector solitons. In addition, numerical simulations are carried out to clarify the manipulation process of the vector solitons. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of scalarvector operation in a bidirectional fibre laser, which both enriches our understanding toward polarization dynamics of optical solitons and paves potential application scenarios of pulsed fibre lasers.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode locking is a nonlinear process of multimode soliton self-organization. Here the real-time buildup dynamics of the multiple solitons in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber laser are investigated, assisted by the time-stretch technique. We find that the buildup processes are transverse mode dependent, especially during the stages of relaxation oscillation and Q -switching prior to multiple soliton formation. Furthermore, we observe that the transverse modal composition of these generated pulses among the multiple solitons can be different from each other, indicating the spatiotemporal structure of the multiple soliton. A simplified theoretical model based on pulse energy evolution is put forward to interpret the role of 3D saturable absorber on spatiotemporal structures of spatiotemporal mode-locking multiple solitons. Our work has presented the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in multimode fiber lasers, which are novel to those inside the single transverse mode fiber lasers. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:The buildup dynamics from noise-seeded relaxation oscillation to harmonic mode-locking (HML) solitons generation have been well investigated in ultrafast fiber lasers. However, the transient multi-soliton dynamics in higher-order HML states are still attractive yet largely unexplored. We reveal here that, the experimental observation of the multi-soliton dynamics including soliton beating dynamics, soliton annihilation, transient bound state, two-soliton resonance state, soliton splitting, and multi-soliton repulsion dynamics are analyzed by the emerging time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique. Particularly, the excessive intracavity energy result in the double-pulse pulsating with transient bound states and three types of soliton molecules states can be observed in the earlier and middle part of the transition process. Numerical results further reveal that several similar multi-soliton dynamics operating at stable 2nd and 3rd states could be caused by a fine tuning of the pump power level in a hybrid mode-locked laser. Our results unveil a diverse set of ultrafast transient process in fiber lasers, and open up new ways into obtaining and controlling the generation of high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the transition dynamics between 2nd and 3rd harmonic mode-locking states using the dispersive Fourier transform technology in a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser. Keeping the pump power unchanged and adjusting polarization controller to change intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the spectral filtering effect, a set of soliton dynamics induced by soliton interaction are revealed before the soliton splitting. Solitons undergo similar oscillation behaviors during the reverse decay process of the harmonic mode-locking order until one of the solitons disappears. In these transient dynamics, a significant wavelength shift phenomenon could be observed in the transition process of harmonic orders. The numerical results further show that intracavity spectral filtering effects play key role in the harmonic order transition dynamics process, consistent with experimental results. It provides new insights into the evolution and dynamics behavior in harmonic mode-locked soliton order conversion and its potential applications.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the dynamic process of dissipative soliton build-up by dispersive Fourier transform in net normal dispersion cavity. The oscillation of spectral bandwidth and pulse energy before the stabilization of dissipative soliton was observed, the build-up and termination of the double dissipative solitons accompanied with soliton explosion and energy interaction were observed with higher pump power. Simulation of dissipative soliton build-up process was demonstrated through the extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation, negative feedback mechanism was summarized as the reason of the pulse oscillation during the build-up process.

Abstract:Collision refers to a striking nonlinear interaction in dissipative systems, revealing the particle-like properties of solitons. In dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers, collisions are inherent and periodic. However, how collisions influence the dynamical transitions in the dual-wavelength mode-locked state has still not been explored. In our research, dispersion management triggers the complex interactions between solitons in the cavity. We reveal the smooth or reversible Hopf-type bifurcation transitions of dual-color soliton molecules (SMs) during collision by real-time spectral measurement technique of TS-DFT. The reversible transitions from stationary SM to vibrating SM, revealing that cavity parameters pass through a bifurcation point in the collision process without active external intervention. The numerical results confirm the universality of collision-induced bifurcation behavior. These findings provide new insights into collision dynamics in dual-wavelength ultrafast fiber lasers. Furthermore, the study of intermolecular collisions is of great significance for other branches of nonlinear science.

Abstract:Optimization of self-starting in passively mode-locked optical soliton fiber laser resonators results from a complex transient dynamic involving soliton molecules, soliton-based complexes and supramolecular structures, with particle-like properties. By means of time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform based real-time spectroscopy, we identify a new route to the passive mode-locking of fiber laser solitons. A raised relaxation oscillation stage is followed by the generation of shaking-soliton molecular triplets. The relative phase between satellite and main pulses of shaking soliton triplets evolves chaotically, while the two satellite pulses are orthogonal to each other in their state of polarization. These results provide new perspectives into the soliton formation and the internal dynamics of soliton molecules with higher degrees of freedom.
