Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) self-assembling into soft cubic crystalline structures possess significant applications in the field of dynamic photoelectron spectroscopy. However, three scientific challenges limit their broader application, namely, the difficulty to form a free-standing structure due to fluidity, dependence on nanoparticles or polymer matrix to widen the BP temperature range, and high working voltages to reorientate the LCMs. Herein, we proposed a new concept of free-standing BPLC microcapsules (BPLCMs) prepared by microfluidic emulsification and interfacial polymerization. The temperature range of BPLCs could be widened by surface anchoring and physical confinement. The BPLCMs built a color library in the visible region in the thermal response process. Most importantly, the stable BPLCMs exhibited a reversible surface-switch mode driven by an electric field lower than 0.55 V mu m(-1), which was the lowest record for BPLCs. The BPLCMs demonstrate intriguing prospects in the fields of smart display and reversible sensors.

Abstract:Nonlinear-optical response of photorefractive hybrid liquid crystal (LC) cells has been studied by means of dynamic holographic technique in two-wave mixing arrangement. The LC cells include nonuniform silicon substrates comprising a micrometer-range photonic crystal. A thin LC layer is set between silicon substrate and a flat glass substrate covered by a transparent (ITO) electrode. A dynamic diffraction grating was induced in the LC volume by the two-wave mixing of laser beams with simultaneous application of DC electric field to the cell. Theoretical model of Raman-Nath self-diffraction was developed. This model allows for calculation of nonlinear optical characteristics in thin samples on the base of two-wave mixing experimental data, and with taking into account light losses on absorption and/or scattering. The hybrid LC cells demonstrate strong nonlinear optical effect, prospective for many applications in electro-optical microsystems, such as SLMs, as well as in multi-channel systems.

In this paper we present an electro-optical device consisting of nematic liquid crystals addressed by an electrode structure consisting of thin films of polymer wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes (nanohybrids). Thin films of nanohybrids display excellent optical transmission and electrical conduction properties. Due to the randomly organised nanohybrids these composite films produce interesting director profile arrangements within the liquid crystal layers. As a result, enhanced scattering of laser and white light was observed from these liquid crystal cells which bend themselves as electrically controllable optical diffusers and beam shapers.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:Liquid crystal (LC) is a kind of functional soft matter featured by self-assembly and stimuli responsiveness. It is widely known as a fundamental material for current mainstream information display industry. With the development and innovation of LC theory and technology, understanding on such a material system has been significantly extended. Recently, the manipulation of LC microstructures has been flexibly enabled via a photoalignment technique, and the research focus has been gradually transitioned from traditional displays to advanced LC photonics. It is expected to provide great opportunities in the fields of planar optics, structured light fields, optical cross connection, and mode division multiplexing optical communications. This review presents the latest works of the Research Center for Liquid Crystal and Photonics of Nanjing University in the field of photoalignment-enabled LC microstructures and photonic applications. To be specific, LC hierarchical architectures, optically addressed spatial light modulators, and LC telecom/terahertz elements are separately discussed.

Abstract:We show that photovoltaic fields are capable of efficiently reorienting liquid crystals, leading to new concepts of optically addressable light modulators. Using an arrangement consisting of a liquid-crystal layer between LiNbO3:Fe photovoltaic substrates, we observed spatial filtering due to self-phase modulation in a planar-oriented cell and nonlinear transmission between crossed polarizers in a twist-oriented cell. These processes do not require an external electric field. The substrates are arranged such that light propagates along the +c axis in each substrate, allowing a secondary process of power transfer to occur through contradirectional photorefractive two-beam coupling.

Abstract:We observed strikingly different first reflection dynamics of two counter-propagating laser beams passing through a wedge-shaped C-60-doped liquid crystal cell sandwiched between two ZnSecoated ITO glass plates without applied electric field, suggesting a strong subwavelength energy coupling between light beams. Exponential gain coefficient as high as 10 574 cm(-1) was obtained from the 1.1 mu m-thick portion of the cell under applied voltage U-0 = 3.0 V, consisting with the subwavelength coupling picture. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) supporting layer is identified by considering dipolar properties of liquid crystal molecules that are well aligned. The specific features in energy coupling dynamics and 2D diffraction patterns perceived suggest that SPP mediated coupling is responsible for all the findings. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) technology have a well‐established history of applications in visible light, particularly in the display industry. However, with the rapid growth in communication technology, LCs have become a topic of current interest for high‐frequency microwave (MW) and millimeter‐wave (mmWave) applications due to promising characteristics such as tunability, continuous tuning, low losses, and price compatibility. To improve the performance of future communication technology using LCs, it is not sufficient only with the perspective of radio‐frequency (RF) technology. Therefore, it is imperative to understand not only the novel structural designs and optimization of MW engineering but also the perspective of materials engineering when implementing advanced RF devices with maximum performance for next‐generation satellite and terrestrial communication. Herein, based on advanced nematic LCs, polymer‐modified LCs, dual‐frequency LCs, and photo‐reactive LCs, this article summarizes and examines the modulation principles and key research directions for the design strategies of LCs for advanced smart RF devices with improved driving performance and novel functionality. Abstract:This paper proposed a single-exposure photoalignment method based on a spatial light modulator, which could realize arbitrary pattern design. The polarization direction of the output light can be controlled on the pixel level, and then different local liquid crystal (LC) orientations are generated. Hence, Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase LC devices with arbitrary LC distribution patterns, can be fabricated using our method. Such a non-interference single-exposure method is simple and efficient, and is less sensitive to the influence of environmental interference. Based on this approach, we fabricated a variety of PB phase LC devices: gratings, lenses, holograms and q-plates using two photoalignment materials. Our PB phase LC devices can achieve high diffraction efficiency with continuous phase distribution. Based on the PB devices we also designed a head-up display and a head-mounted display system for augmented reality applications.

Abstract:An advisable perfluoroalkyl acrylates functionalized system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to drastically enhance the electric-field responsiveness of blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC), which overcomes the common tradeoff between the driving voltage and response time dependent on the polymer concentration. On one hand, a quick electrical response can be readily obtained from a denser polymer network due to the participation of perfluoroalkyl acrylates in photo-crosslinking; on the other hand, the large rising trend of driving voltage with the growing polymer concentration can be alleviated due to the reduced anchoring energy between the BPLC and surrounding polymer attributed to the lower surface tension of perfluoroalkyl acrylate. In consequence, a faster decay time of 0.54 ms and almost hysteresis-free electro-optical (E-O) performance of the BPLC is achieved, with an efficient reduction by almost half in the driving voltage.

Abstract:In this work, we describe the phase behaviour and the dielectric and conductivity response of new light-responsive ionic liquid crystals, ILCs, which can be applied as controllable electrolytes. The materials include two different dicationic viologens, the asymmetric 6BP18 and the symmetric EV2ON(Tf)2, containing bistriflimide as the counterions, mixed with 5% and 50% molar, respectively, of one new photoresponsive mesogen called CNAzO14. These mixtures exhibit liquid crystal behaviour, light responsiveness through the E-Z photoisomerisation of the azobenzene groups in CNAzO14, and strong dielectric responses. The 5%-CNAzO14/Ev2ON(Tf)2 mixture displays direct current conductivities in the 10−7 S·cm−1 range, which can be increased by a two-fold factor upon the irradiation of UV light at 365 nm. Our findings set the grounds for designing new smart ionic soft materials with nanostructures that can be tuned and used for energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract:In this paper, an electrically controlled liquid crystal (LC) microlens array based on dual-layer arrayed planar pattern electrode is reported for effective light wave modulation. By adjusting the voltages applied to two planar arrayed electrodes within one substrate of the LC microlens, an adjustable focused circular ring or point-shaped light spot can be formed. Dual-layers arrayed pattern electrode with a minimum interval spacing of approximately ~10μm and a maximum of 130μm are achieved on one substrate by using standard microelectronic lithography, etching, coating film, and other processes. Experimental results are presented and discussed to illustrate outstanding performance of electrically focusing and modulation capability of the proposed LC device. This approach will serve as inspiration for the continued development and design of LC optical elements, enabling applications such as light field imaging, wavefront detection/correction, and the advancement of imaging augmented systems.

Abstract:Photoalignment by azo dye nanolayers can provide high alignment quality for large-area liquid crystal devices. Application of this technology to active optical elements for signal processing and communications is a hot topic of photonics research. In this article, we review recent demonstrations and performance of liquid crystal photonic devices, discuss the advantages of the proposed technology, and identify challenges and future prospects in the research field of photoaligned multi-domain liquid crystal structures. We believe that the developments discussed here can provide directions for future research and potential opportunities for applications of liquid crystal devices based on multi-domain photoalignment.

Abstract:The marriage of reflected light originating from photonic crystals (PCs) and emitted light would create miraculous phenomena. However, traditional luminophores cannot avoid the problem of aggregation-caused quenching. To solve this problem, we develop a general method to incorporate aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) into PCs via physical absorption or chemical reaction. The resulting luminescent PCs display diverse structural colors in response to water stimulation, due to the swelling of the aqueous medium. Such a water-tunable photonic band gap red-shift has the ability to modulate the AIEgen emission, as well as narrowing its full width at half maximum (FWHM), which allows the luminescent PC to behave as a smart intramolecular filter that is capable of creating arbitrary light from only one material. In addition, the filter is believed to modulate the broad emission spectra of AIEgens arising from different conformations. Furthermore, the luminescent PC can respond to ethanol stimulation due to two factors: (a) swelling of the aqueous medium (external tuning); and (b) expansion of nanoparticles (internal tuning). By exploiting the synergy of the external-internal tuning, the emission wavelength and intensity can be finely changed. Both the water- and ethanol-tunable emission shift fit to a linear relationship, and thus the luminescent PC could be able to quantitatively detect humidity in the environment and alcohol in wine.

Abstract:This review presents the main results that were achieved over the past decade in the new field of liquid-crystal micro-photonics. After a general introduction to some aspects of state-of-the-art micro-photonics technologies, nematic colloids are discussed in terms of their self-assembly and photonic properties. Liquid-crystal lasers, based on spatially periodic, liquid-crystal phases, are reviewed, and microlasers based on liquid-crystal microdroplets are presented and discussed. We show that optical microfibres can be self-grown in water/liquid-crystal dispersions and present their waveguiding and lasing properties. The review concludes with a discussion of the resonant transfer of light across different liquid-crystal micro-objects and presents the ultra-fast optical Kerr and STED effects in bulk nematic liquid crystals.
