Abstract:Ultraviolet spectroscopy provides unique insights into the structure of matter with applications ranging from fundamental tests to photochemistry in the earth's atmosphere and astronomical observations from space telescopes. At longer wavelengths, dual-comb spectroscopy with two interfering laser frequency combs has evolved into a powerful technique that can offer simultaneously a broad spectral range and very high resolution. Here we demonstrate a photon-counting approach that can extend the unique advantages of this method into ultraviolet regions where nonlinear frequency-conversion tends to be very inefficient. Our spectrometer, based on two frequency combs of slightly different repetition frequencies, provides broad span, high resolution, frequency calibration within the accuracy of an atomic clock, and overall consistency of the spectra. We demonstrate a signal-to-noise ratio at the quantum limit and optimal use of the measurement time, provided by the multiplex recording of all spectral data on a single photo-counter. Our initial experiments are performed in the near-ultraviolet and in the visible spectral ranges with alkali-atom vapor, with a power per comb line as low as a femtowatt. This crucial step towards precision broadband spectroscopy at short wavelengths clears the path to extreme-ultraviolet dual-comb spectroscopy and, more generally, generates a new realm of applications for diagnostics at photon level, as encountered e.g., when driving single atoms or molecules.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible would enable broad bandwidth electronic spectroscopy with unprecedented frequency resolution. However, there are significant challenges in generation, detection and processing of dual-comb data that have restricted its progress in this spectral region. In this work, we leverage robust 1550 nm few-cycle pulses to generate frequency combs in the UV-visible. We couple this source to a wavelength multiplexed dual-comb spectrometer and simultaneously retrieve 100 MHz comb-mode-resolved spectra over three distinct harmonics spanning 380-800 nm. The experiments highlight the path to continuous dual-comb coverage spanning 200-750 nm, offering extensive access to electronic transitions in atoms, molecules, and solids.

Abstract:Frequency combs have revolutionized the field of optical spectroscopy, enabling researchers to probe molecular systems with a multitude of accurate and precise optical frequencies. While there have been tremendous strides in direct frequency comb spectroscopy, these approaches have been unable to record high resolution spectra on the nanosecond timescale characteristic of many physiochemical processes. Here we demonstrate a new approach to optical frequency comb generation in which a pair of electro-optic combs is produced in the near-infrared and subsequently transferred with high mutual coherence and efficiency into the mid-infrared within a single optical parametric oscillator. The high power, mutual coherence, and agile repetition rates of these combs as well as the large mid-infrared absorption of many molecular species enable fully resolved spectral transitions to be recorded in timescales as short as 20 ns. We have applied this approach to study the rapid dynamics occurring within a supersonic pulsed jet, however we note that this method is widely applicable to fields such as chemical and quantum physics, atmospheric chemistry, combustion science, and biology.

Abstract:Absorption spectroscopy of fundamental ro-vibrational transitions in the mid-infrared region provides a powerful tool for studying the structure and dynamics of molecules in the gas phase and for sensitive and quantitative gas sensing. Laser frequency combs permit novel approaches to perform broadband molecular spectroscopy. Multiplex dual-comb spectroscopy without moving parts can achieve particularly high speed, sensitivity and resolution. However, achieving Doppler-limited resolution in the mid-infrared still requires overcoming instrumental challenges. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on difference-frequency generation of frequency-agile near-infrared frequency combs that are produced using electro-optic modulators. The combs have a remarkably flat intensity distribution, and their positions and line spacings can be freely selected by simply dialing a knob. Using the proposed technique, we record, in the 3-μm region, Doppler-limited absorption spectra with resolved comb lines within milliseconds, and precise molecular line parameters are retrieved. Our technique holds promise for fast and sensitive time-resolved studies of, for example, trace gases.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an all-fiber dual-comb spectrometer based on an original design of a highly nonlinear fiber to efficiently convert frequency combs in the near-infrared from 1.55 μm to around 2 μm. We show that our spectrometer can be used to measure the absorption profiles of rovibrational transitions of CO2 and N2O molecules, especially their collisional self-broadening coefficients. The results show very good agreement with the HITRAN database, and thus, further measurements have been performed on a mixture of CO2/N2O to measure the broadening of the CO2 absorption lines resulting from the presence of N2O.

Abstract:Dual-emission nanothermometers with the capability of precise measurement combined with high spatial resolution at the micro- and nanoscale could represent a powerful tool in several areas of technology such as microelectronics, microscale optics, photonics, microfluidics, and biomedical engineering. However, most such nanothermometers reported so far exhibit two distinct emissions located within the visible spectrum region, which limits their application potential. Here we reported a visible and near-infrared (NIR) dual-emission nanothermometer based on PbS/CdS/CdSe core/barrier/shell quantum dots (QDs). The ratiometric response of the two isolated photoluminescence (PL) peak integrated areas located at around 670 and 910 nm (corresponding to CdSe and PbS in core/barrier/shell structure, respectively) are found to be markedly temperature-dependent in the 180-300 K range with a thermal sensitivity of 1.22% K-1. In addition, the lifetime (PbS and CdSe) and PL peak shifts (PbS) exhibit a linear dependence on temperature. Multiple independent estimates of temperature could facilitate self-calibrations and enhance the accuracy of measurements. Our results evidence the great potential of visible and NIR luminescence nanothermometers based on dual-emission PbS/CdS/CdSe QDs for several technologies.

Abstract:Molecular diagnostics are a primary tool of modern chemistry, enabling researchers to map chemical reaction pathways and rates to better design and control chemical systems. Many chemical reactions are complex and fast, and existing diagnostic approaches provide incomplete information. For example, mass spectrometry is optimized to gather snapshots of the presence of many chemical species, while conventional laser spectroscopy can quantify a single chemical species through time. Here we optimize for multiple objectives by introducing a high-speed and broadband, mid-infrared dual frequency comb absorption spectrometer. The optical bandwidth of >1000 cm-1 covers absorption fingerprints of many species with spectral resolution <0.03 cm-1 to accurately discern their absolute quantities. Key to this advance are 1 GHz pulse repetition rate frequency combs covering the 3-5 um region that enable microsecond tracking of fast chemical process dynamics. We demonstrate this system to quantify the abundances and temperatures of each species in the complete reactants-to-products breakdown of 1,3,5-trioxane, which exhibits a formaldehyde decomposition pathway that is critical to modern low temperature combustion systems. By maximizing the number of observed species and improving the accuracy of temperature and concentration measurements, this spectrometer advances understanding of chemical reaction pathways and rates and opens the door for novel developments such as combining high-speed chemistry with machine learning.

Abstract:Spectroscopy plays a pivotal role in various applications for industrial and commercial analysis. Conventional spectroscopy instruments include various discrete optical components like light sources, monochromators and detectors. These components are mechanically intricate and require space for the mechanisms that adjust and calibrate them, which increases the instrument’s footprint and make them less adjustable for portable applications. This drawback initiated the increase in the demand for miniatured spectral detection systems. Here, we present a low-cost ultra-compact miniaturized spectral detection system, which integrates both linear variable light sources, sample chambers and detectors within a centimetre-scale chip. The linear variable light generation across wavelengths ranging from 480 nm to 600 nm is achieved by stimulating different regions of the ZnCdSeS bandgap-graded semiconductor nanofilm with ultraviolet light. We demonstrate the capability of the system with precise identification of liquids. Our device overcomes the typical miniaturization limits imposed by discrete optical components, and long light paths in conventional spectroscopy instruments and opens up numerous potential applications across various fields due to its portability, ease of use, and lower cost.
Improving Resolution of Dual-Comb Gas Detection Using Periodic Spectrum Alignment Method.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy has been an infusive spectroscopic tool for gas detection due to its high resolution, high sensitivity, and fast acquisition speed over a broad spectral range without any mechanical scanning components. However, the complexity and cost of high-performance dual-comb spectroscopy are still high for field-deployed applications. To solve this problem, we propose a simple frequency domain post-processing method by extracting the accurate position of a specific absorption line frame by frame. After aligning real-time spectra and averaging for one second, the absorbance spectrum of H13C14N gas in the near-infrared is obtained over 1.1 THz spectral range. By using this method, the standard deviation of residual error is only ~0.002, showing great agreement with the conventional correction method. In addition, the spectral resolution is improved from 13.4 GHz to 4.3 GHz compared to direct spectrum averaging. Our method does not require a specially designed common-mode suppression comb, rigorous frequency control system, or complicated computational algorithm, providing a cost-effective scheme for field-deployed Doppler-limited spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:Dual-comb system with simplified integration acts a crucial role in the next stage of field-deployable application. Here we demonstrate a home-made dual-comb spectrometer that meets this requirement based on optically stabilized erbium-fiber frequency combs. The simplified integration and operability are highlighted by the embedded large motion-span automatic optical delay line that resulted in 1.7 MHz of continuous repetition rate tuning range and avoid multiple fiber cutbacks. This relaxes the second similar frequency comb duplication, therefore simplifies dual-comb system integration. The mutual coherence was enhanced by optical phase lock to a common narrow-linewidth reference laser via pump current modulation. We acquired the absorption feature of acetylene 12C2H2 molecule in 1.5 μm region with an apodized instrument linewidth of 0.076 cm-1. The mean signal-to-noise ratio within a spectral bandwidth of 90 cm-1 achieved 280, and the corresponding noise equivalent absorption coefficient was 3.7 × 10-6 cm-1·Hz-1/2 for an absorption path of 7.5 cm and a pressure of 100 Torr. The accuracy of the retrieved spectrum was further confirmed by comparing with HITRAN database.
Combined time and frequency spectroscopy with engineered dual comb spectrometer

Abstract:Dual comb spectroscopy (DCS) is a powerful technique for broadband spectroscopy with high precision and fast data acquisition. High-frequency resolution requires long data acquisition times, limiting the temporal resolution in time-resolved measurements. Here we overcome this limitation by engineering the DCS pulse train that interacts with the sample. The measurement is performed in steps where the number of pulses interacting with the sample varies in each step. The DCS spectrum is recorded in each stage, and a multi-dimensional spectrum is generated from which the system time evolution is deduced. We demonstrate this method by measuring the absorption spectrum of a room temperature rubidium vapor. The measured population dynamics of the excited state show a square dependence on the number of interacting pulses due to the coherent accumulation of population. Rabi oscillations are also observed under intense excitation conditions. This is the first demonstration of DCS with high frequency and time resolutions without invoking pump-probe spectroscopy, uniting the pulsed laser spectral and temporal properties. This method can simultaneously detect the kinetics of different chemical species and the pathway for the chemical reaction.

Abstract:Mid-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy has proven an invaluable tool for the study of the structure and dynamics of molecules in the gas phase. The advent of frequency combs advances the frontiers of precise molecular spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate, in the important 3-{\mu}m spectral region of the fundamental CH stretch in molecules, dual-comb spectroscopy with experimental coherence times between the combs that exceed half-an-hour. Mid-infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy using two frequency combs with self-calibration of the frequency scale, negligible contribution of the instrumental line-shape to the spectral profiles, high signal-to-noise ratio and broad spectral bandwidth opens up novel opportunities for precision spectroscopy of small molecules. Highly multiplexed metrology of line shapes may be envisioned.
Broadband high-resolution molecular spectroscopy with interleaved mid-infrared frequency combs

Abstract:Historically, there has been a trade-off in spectroscopic measurements between high spectral resolution, broadband coverage, and acquisition time. Optical frequency combs, initially envisioned for precision spectroscopy of the hydrogen atom in the ultraviolet region, are now commonly used for probing molecular rotational-vibrational transitions throughout broad spectral bands in the mid-infrared with superior accuracy, resolution and speed. Here we demonstrate acquisition of 2.5 million spectral points over the continuous wavelength range of 3.2 to 5.1 microns (frequency span 1200 cm^{-1}, resolution <100 kHz) via interleaving comb-tooth-resolved spectra acquired with a highly-coherent broadband dual-frequency-comb system based on optical subharmonic generation. With the original comb-line spacing of 115 MHz, overlaying spectra with gradually shifted comb lines we fully resolved amplitude and phase spectra of molecules with narrow Doppler-broadened lines, such as {\nu}1+{\nu}3 band of carbon disulfide (CS2) and its isotopologues. Also, we were able to observe the chemical oxidation reaction of CS2 by detecting traces of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) via its asymmetric {\nu}3 stretch band.

Abstract:Mid-infrared dual-comb spectroscopy has the potential to supplant conventional high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy in applications that require high resolution, accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio, and speed. Until now, dual-comb spectroscopy in the mid-infrared has been limited to narrow optical bandwidths or to low signal-to-noise ratios. Using a combination of digital signal processing and broadband frequency conversion in waveguides, we demonstrate a mid-infrared dual-comb spectrometer that can measure comb-tooth resolved spectra across an octave of bandwidth in the mid-infrared from 2.6-5.2 $\mu$m with sub-MHz frequency precision and accuracy and with a spectral signal-to-noise ratio as high as 6500. As a demonstration, we measure the highly structured, broadband cross-section of propane (C3H8) in the 2860-3020 cm-1 region, the complex phase/amplitude spectrum of carbonyl sulfide (COS) in the 2000 to 2100 cm-1 region, and the complex spectra of methane, acetylene, and ethane in the 2860-3400 cm-1 region.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.
