Abstract:Introduction: Many researchers have explored the bound states in the continuum (BICs) as a particular bound wave state which can be used to achieve a very high Q-factor. High-Q factor devices, typically based on the bound states in the continuum (BICs), are well used in the fields of hypersensitive biochemical sensors, non-linear effects enhancement, plasmon lasers, and hi-performance filtering. However, symmetrical-protected BIC is difficult to achieve experimentally high-Q factor because it strongly depends on the geometry and can be destroyed by any slight disturbance in the potential well.Methods: Therefore, we proposed a parameter-adjusted Friedrich-Wintergen BIC based on the analysis model of time-coupled model theory, where the target system parameters can be tuned to achieve high-Q excitation.Results: Moreover, considering the tunability and flexibility of the components in various practical applications, we integrate active materials into metasurface arrays with the help of external stimuli to achieve modulation of high-Q resonances. Our results demonstrate that an optical resonator based on FW-BIC can modulate the BIC state by changing the intermediate gap.Discussion: The BIC state and the high-Q factor Fano resonance can be dynamically tuned by adding temperature-sensitive VO2 material.
Integrated Electro-Optic Control of Biphoton Generation Using Hybrid Photonics

Abstract:Parametric sources in quantum optics usually require some form of spectro-temporal control for conditional generation of high-purity single-photon states, but their properties have not yet been optimized using integrated microchips. Using external short-pulse lasers and separate devices for pump preparation and for photon generation, as is traditional, incurs many impediments such as reduced performance, increased loss, high cost, and limited scalability. To overcome these limitations, here we demonstrate a circuit including high-bandwidth, high-extinction ratio electro-optic modulators for pump-pulse preparation fully integrated with high-quality factor ( Q ) microresonators for efficient parametric nonlinearity, together with seamlessly interconnecting waveguides. The microchip uses different optical materials on a common platform and a multi-layer integrated photonic architecture. Using this, we control the joint spectrum of room-temperature biphoton generation for the first time on a single integrated microchip, and demonstrate that the theoretical purity bound can be achieved.

Abstract:Distant interactions at arbitrary locations and their dynamic control are fundamentally important for realizing large-scale photonic and quantum circuits. Conventional approaches suffer from short coupling distance, poor controllability, fixed locations and low wavelength uniformity, significantly restricting the scalability of photonic and quantum networks. Here, we exploit the intrinsic advantages of optical bound state in the continuum (BIC) and demonstrate an all-in-one solution for dynamically controllable long-range interactions. BIC metasurface can support a series of finite-sized quasi-BIC microlasers at arbitrary locations. The quasi-BICs microlasers have the same wavelength and are inherently connected through BIC waveguide. Consequently, the coupling distances in experiment increase significantly from subwavelength to tens of micrometers. Such long-range interaction in BIC metasurface enables scaling to two-dimensional architectures and ultrafast control of internal laser actions, e.g., non-Hermitian zero-mode lasing and enhanced optical gain. This research shall facilitate the advancement of scalable and reconfigurable photonic networks.

Low-threshold nanolasers based on miniaturized bound states in the continuum

Abstract:The pursuit of compact lasers with low thresholds has imposed strict requirements on tight light confinements with minimized radiation losses. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been recently demonstrated as an effective mechanism to trap light. However, most reported BIC lasers are still bulky due to the absence of in-plane light confinement. Here, we combine BICs and photonic bandgaps to realize three-dimensional light confinements, as referred to miniaturized BICs (mini-BICs). We demonstrate highly compact active mini-BIC resonators with a record high-quality ( Q ) factor of up to 32,500, which enables single-mode lasing with the lowest threshold of 80 W/cm 2 among the reported BIC lasers. In addition, photon statistics measurements further confirm the occurrence of the stimulated emission in our devices. Our work reveals a path toward compact BIC lasers with ultralow power consumption and potentially boosts the applications in cavity quantum electrodynamics, nonlinear optics, and integrated photonics.

Ultra-small-size Microcavity with High Quality Factor Utilizing Bound State in the Continuum

Abstract:The bound state in the continuum (BIC) is widely used in optical field confinement because of its potential in radiation suppression, providing an energy confinement method different from traditional microcavities. However, the size compression of BIC cavities still remains challenging. In this paper, we report an ultra-small size, high-Q BIC microcavity on silicon on insulator (SOI) platfom. We used the integer topological charges carried by the BICs to suppress the vertical radiation loss, while photonic crystal hetero-structures were utilized to reduce the transverse energy leakage. We designed and fabricated photonic crystal microcavity with optical confinement region as tiny as 5×5 period. The measured Q is greater than 170 thousand with the peak wavelength at 1550.39 nm. This work shows the potential of BIC microcavities in size compression. The study has positive effects on integrated optics, information optics, biooptics, topological optics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Highly compact lasers with ultra-low threshold and single-mode continuous wave (CW) operation have been a long sought-after component for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs), due to their excellent ability of trapping light and enhancing light-matter interaction, have been investigated in lasing configurations combining various BIC cavities and optical gain materials. However, the realization of BIC laser with a highly compact size and an ultra-low CW threshold has remained elusive. We demonstrate room temperature CW BIC lasers in the 1310 nm O-band wavelength range, by fabricating a miniaturized BIC cavity in an InAs/GaAs epitaxial quantum dot (QD) gain membrane. By enabling effective trapping of both light and carriers in all three dimensions, ultra-low threshold of 12 μW (0.052 kW cm −2 ) is achieved at room temperature. Single-mode lasing is also realized in cavities as small as only 5 × 5 unit cells (~2.5 × 2.5 μm 2 cavity size) with a mode volume of 1.16(λ/n) 3 . The maximum operation temperature reaches 70 °C with a characteristic temperature of T 0 ~93.9 K. With its advantages in terms of a small footprint, ultra-low power consumption, and adaptability for integration, the mini-BIC lasers offer a perspective light source for future PICs aimed at high-capacity optical communications, sensing and quantum information.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to the infinite quality factor (Q-factor) resonance and extremely localized field. In this study, BICs have been demonstrated by dielectric metasurfaces with hybrid surface lattice resonance (SLR) in the experiment. By breaking the symmetry of geometry, SLR can be easily switched between BICs and quasi-BICs. Comparing with literature, switching between BICs and quasi-BICs is usually accompanied by wavelength shift. Here, a design rule is proposed to prevent the wavelength shift when the Q-factor is changing. Also, such a design also makes subsequent identification of the laser threshold more credible. Due to the high Q-factor, low threshold laser is one of the intuitive applications of BICs. Utilize the high localized ability of BICs, low threshold BICs laser can be achieved by the dielectric metasurface immersed with Rhodamine 6G. Interestingly, due to the high Q-factor resonance of BICs, the laser signals and images can be observed in almost transparent samples. Not only the BICs laser is demonstrated in the experiment, but also the mechanism of BICs is deeply analyzed. This study can help readers better understand this novel feature of BICs, and provide the way for engineer BICs metasurfaces. The device can provide various applications, including laser, optical sensing, non-linear optics enhancement, and single-photon source.

Abstract:Ultrafast vortex microlasers For applications in ultrafast communication, all-optical switches will require low energy consumption, high speed, a strong modulation ratio, a small footprint, and on-chip integration. Although the small footprint and on-chip integration are accessible, the trade-off between low energy consumption and high speed has been challenging. Huang et al. exploited the idea of bound states in the continuum, effectively a high–quality ( Q ) cavity without the physical cavity, to design vortex lasers with highly directional output and single-mode operation. With the trade-off between low energy consumption and high speed now broken, it should be possible to realize ultrafast optical switching that meets all the requirements of modern classic and quantum information. Abstract:Ultra-high-Q optical whispering gallery microcavities are promising platforms for fundamental studies and applied photonics. A new type of on-chip microcavity is experimentally realized, which features both highly unidirectional emission and ultra-high-Q factors exceeding 100 million in near infrared. By doping erbium into the microcavity, lasing emission in 1550 nm band is observed under a convenient freespace optical pumping, with the threshold as low as 2 μW. Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) with extremely large quality factors (Q factors) can enhance the light-matter interaction and thus achieve low-threshold lasing. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the low-threshold lasing at room temperature based on BICs. A threshold of approximately 306.7 W/cm2 (peak intensity) under a 7.5 ns-pulsed optical excitation is presented in an all-dielectric metasurface system consisting of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopillars with a dye film. Also, the multimode lasing can be excited by the higher pumping. Our results may find exciting applications in on-chip coherent light sources, filtering, and sensing.

Abstract:Light is usually confined in photonic structures with a band gap or relatively high refractive index for broad scientific and technical applications. Here, a light confinement mechanism is proposed based on the photonic bound state in the continuum (BIC). In a low-refractive-index waveguide on a high-refractive-index thin membrane, optical dissipation is forbidden because of the destructive interference of various leakage channels. The BIC-based low-mode-area waveguide and high-Q microresonator can be used to enhance light-matter interaction for laser, nonlinear optical and quantum optical applications. For example, a polymer structure on a diamond membrane shows excellent optical performance that can be achieved with large fabrication tolerance. It can induce strong coupling between photons and the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond for scalable quantum information processors and networks.

Abstract:Recently, optical bound states in continuum (BICs) incorporated with optical gain have been reported to exhibit lasing. Here, it is shown that each of the four BICs supported by C4v$_{4v}$ symmetric photonic crystal slab can be made to lase, allowing the control over the topological charge of the resulting laser beam. The type of each BIC and their topological charges are identified by imaging the far-field polarization vortices of the lasing signal. Results are compared with experimentally obtained dispersions, finite element method simulations, and multipole decomposition method based on the microscopic polarization currents in the photonic crystal plane. A demonstration of multimode lasing of two non-degenerate BICs with opposite topological charges is presented. The momentum space overlap of the BICs results in a unique polarization pattern. The study provides a generalizable example for engineering the topological properties of coherent light.

Abstract:Experimental realizations of bound states in the continuum (BICs) with strong robustness and advanced maneuverability in optical loss systems remain a long-standing challenge in nanophotonics. Here, we propose and fabricate a paradigm of diatomic metagratings incorporating the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model into the design of plasmonic nanocavities to demonstrate optical resonators with a continuous "quasi-BICs (qBICs)-BICs-qBICs" transition. These resonators feature a topological band inversion, making high-quality (Q) resonances immune to the perturbation of incident angles and geometrical parameters. Furthermore, we strive to establish theoretical models to verify the topological nature of BICs-inspired resonances and introduce nonlinear optical probes to quantify strongly enhanced local fields at high-Q resonances. Our findings may provide a simple yet feasible design strategy for facilitating the dissipationless manipulation of surface/interface-enhanced light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, substantially broadening the functional scope of metaphotonics.
High-Q Quasibound States in the Continuum for Nonlinear Metasurfaces

Abstract:Sharp electromagnetic resonances play an essential role in physics in general and optics in particular. The last decades have witnessed the successful developments of high-quality (Q) resonances in microcavities operating below the light line, which however is fundamentally challenging to access from free space. Alternatively, metasurface-based bound states in the continuum (BICs) offer a complementary solution of creating high-Q resonances in devices operating above the light line, yet the experimentally demonstrated Q factors under normal excitations are still limited. Here, we present the realizations of quasi-BIC under normal excitation with a record Q factor up to 18 511 by engineering the symmetry properties and the number of the unit cells in all-dielectric metasurface platforms. The high-Q quasi-BICs exhibit exceptionally high conversion efficiency for the third harmonic generation and even enable the second harmonic generation in Si metasurfaces. Such ultrasharp resonances achieved in this work may immediately boost the performances of BICs in a plethora of fundamental research and device applications, e.g., cavity QED, biosensing, nanolasing, and quantum light generations.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BIC) have garnered considerable attention recently for their unique capacity to confine electromagnetic waves within an open or non-Hermitian system. Utilizing a variety of light confinement mechanisms, nanostructures can achieve ultra-high quality factors and intense field localization with BIC, offering advantages such as long-living resonance modes, adaptable light control, and enhanced light-matter interactions, paving the way for innovative developments in photonics. This review outlines novel functionality and performance enhancements by synergizing optical BIC with diverse nanostructures, delivering an in-depth analysis of BIC designs in gratings, photonic crystals, waveguides, and metasurfaces. Additionally, we showcase the latest advancements of BIC in 2D material platforms and suggest potential trajectories for future research.

Photonic integrated circuits in the continuum

Abstract: Waves that are perfectly confined in the continuous spectrum of radiating waves without interaction with them are known as bound states in the continuum (BICs). Despite recent discoveries of BICs in nanophotonics, full routing and control of BICs are yet to be explored. Here, we experimentally demonstrate BICs in a fundamentally new photonic architecture by patterning a low-refractive-index material on a high-refractive-index substrate, where dissipation to the substrate continuum is eliminated by engineering the geometric parameters. Pivotal BIC-based photonic components are demonstrated, including waveguides, microcavities, directional couplers, and modulators. Therefore, this work presents the critical step of photonic integrated circuits in the continuum, and enables the exploration of new single-crystal materials on an integrated photonic platform without the fabrication challenges of patterning the single-crystal materials. The demonstrated lithium niobate platform will facilitate development of functional photonic integrated circuits for optical communications, nonlinear optics at the single photon level as well as scalable photonic quantum information processors.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted much attention since they have infinite lifetimes. Here, we demonstrate lasing action realized by BIC modes on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed silicon (Si) metasurface supporting BIC modes at the visible spectrum consists of the Si nanopillar array. It is found that the BIC's Q-factor depends on the nanopillar radius and the array period. Moreover, the single-mode directional laser emission is observed, which presents the spectral narrowing and the threshold behavior. Compared with other complex nanostructures, the proposed metasurface is more feasible and practical. These results pave the way for on-chip controllable micro-lasers and will find exciting applications in enhanced light-matter interactions such as nanolasers, biosensors and enhanced nonlinear harmonic generation.

Abstract:This review systematically classifies BICs phenomena and discusses their theoretical formation mechanisms and topological properties. Current advancements and applications of BIC‐engineered devices are examined, alongside presenting key challenges such as structural precision, material selection, and measurement complexities. Prospective directions for future research and development in the field of BICs are also outlined. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) refer to nonradiative eigenmodes located within the radiation continuum, possessing infinitely high Q‐factor and enabling exceptionally strong light–matter interactions. BICs have found applications across various domains in photonics and metasurfaces, including nonlinear optical enhancement, vortex beam generation, sensor technology, microlasers, and other related areas. This work starts by classifying the phenomena of BICs and introducing the theoretical formation mechanisms and topological characteristics. Then, the current and advanced applications based on BIC‐devices are highlighted. Lastly, this work discusses the current challenges in studies related to BICs, such as structural precision, material selection, and measurement difficulties, and prospect the possible potentials in future developments. This review provides a theoretical background and application prospects of BIC‐engineered devices in optical and photonics fields, laying a solid foundation for future industrial applications.
