Abstract:Abstract Mode-locked lasers are the ideal source for precise measurements, from frequency combs to precise timing, which relies on the accurate control of the intracavity parameters in the lasers to stabilize the pulse. However, by the lack of accurate measurements, the interplays between intracavity parameters and the mode-locked pulse is still not real-time observable. Here, using the dispersive temporal interferometer, we report a method to single-shot probe the pulse evolution dynamics in time domain in the mode-locked laser. As a typical example, we demonstrate the first single-shot observation on the roundtrip time and phase evolutions of intracavity pulse during its buildup and relaxation. Three distinct evolution regimes for pulse buildup are unveiled for the first time. Moreover, the physical mechanism of the time-location and phase changes in these three regimes has also been analyzed, respectively. Our researches present a novel method to observe the intracavity-parameters-to-pulse interaction, which will improve laser design, ultrafast diagnostics, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Ultrafast phenomena exist widely in modern scientific research. The time scale of ultrafast phenomena is mostly in the order of picosecond, femtosecond, or even attosecond. Nowadays, it is still a major challenge to study these nonrepetitive transient processes. Here, a temporal-frequency measurement based on a dispersion-managed technique has been proposed for an MoTe2-based ultrafast laser. The temporal-frequency measurement comprises a laser diode, an optical switch, a section of tunable dispersion compensation fiber, and a three-port beam splitter. Resolution of the proposed measurement can be tuned in a wide range; further, the upper and lower resolution limits are numerically simulated. The proposed measurement is expected to be applied in ultrafast pulse detection due to its application in real-time measurement of ultrafast nonrepetitive signals.

Abstract:Single-shot measurement of ultrashort time with a dispersive temporal interferometer (DTI) paves the way for exploring intracavity dynamics in ultrafast lasers. Here, we report observations of pulse evolution dynamics after mode-locking buildup in ultrafast lasers. We observe the roundtrip time and phase evolution of the mode-locked pulses after buildup, and we unveil that the pulse experiences three different stages before stabilization, i.e., the soliton breathing stage, the relaxation oscillation stage, and the long-term relaxation stage. We find that the gain depletion effect makes the pulse move forward but does not shift its phase, and it can be distinguished by a DTI from the refractive index change. With this, the dynamics of the three stages is analyzed. Moreover, it is unveiled that the gain relaxation dynamics can intensively affect a laser's stability. These results provide additional perspectives on the intracavity dynamics of mode-locked lasers and of complex nonlinear systems, and they can help to improve the laser stability, which may impact laser design, ultrafast diagnostics, and nonlinear optics. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.4.013202 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.

Abstract:The measurement techniques of femtosecond spectroscopy are effective method to investigate ultrafast dynamics, they are widely used in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. In this paper, the principle, experiment setup and the approaches to deal with the experiment data were presented. Then different measurement techniques such as transient absorption spectroscopy, photon echoes, optical Kerr effect and degenerate four-wave mixing were explained with special examples. At last, the application prospect of measurement techniques of femtosecond spectroscopy was forecasted.

Abstract:Pulsed digital holography, which combines femtosecond pulsed laser and digital holography, is a novel technology for detecting ultrafast transient processes in real-time. Pulsed digital holography can obtain a series of amplitude and phase information of the ultrafast process in one shot at the femtosecond or picosecond order, and comprehensively characterize the whole picture of the ultrafast process. However, the system of pulsed digital holography currently has the defects of complexing, poor stability, small number of pulse frames, and low utilization of space bandwidth, which seriously limits practical applications. In this work, a real-time detection system is designed for ultrafast transient processes, which has the property of high stability, femtosecond or picosecond time order resolution, and adjustable pulse frames. The pulsed lasers are used instead of traditional continuous lasers. The proposed system design provides a competitive approach to ultrafast transient imaging.

Abstract:We present an ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy system in the visible combining high-sensitivity broadband detection with extreme temporal resolution. The instrument is based on an ultrabroadband sub-10 fs optical parametric amplifier coupled to an optical multichannel analyzer with fast electronics, enabling single-shot detection at 1 kHz repetition rate. For a given pump-probe delay tau, we achieve a differential transmission (DeltaTT) sensitivity of the order of 10(-4) over the lambda(pr)=490-720 nm probe wavelength range by averaging over 1000 shots, allowing the acquisition of complete two-dimensional DeltaTT (lambda(pr),Tau) maps within a few minute measurement time. We present application examples highlighting the capability of this instrument to observe ultrafast dynamical processes, follow impulsively excited vibrational motions with frequency as high as 3000 cm(-1) (11 fs period), and determine the probe wavelength dependence of amplitude and phase of the oscillations.

Abstract:With the intensive research on ultrafast dynamics in physics and chemistry, the single‐shot measurement of ultrashort time change has become increasingly important. The most advanced oscilloscope with the time‐lens technique possesses subpicosecond resolution, while the interferometer can single‐shot probe time event within one optical cycle. However, the single‐shot measurement of time difference beyond optical cycle but less than time‐lens’ resolution is still inaccessible. Herein, a technique, the dispersive temporal interferometer (DTI), to break through the gap between interferometer and time lens on single‐shot time measurement, is reported. The concept is an analogy to the spatial interference: a pulse passes two paths to assemble into a pulse pair, and temporal interference arises after large dispersion, which can single‐shot record the imposed time change. Experimentally, it is measured that its resolution is sub‐20 as (0.004 optical cycle) over a range of larger than 2 ps (400 optical cycle), with a range‐to‐resolution ratio of 105 and sampling rate of 42.8 MHz. Moreover, a DTI‐based gyroscope with sensitivity of 348 as/(deg s−1) is fabricated to demonstrate its applications in optical sensors. This technique can precisely single‐shot monitor ultrashort time change in attosecond resolution and has a prosperous application prospect in capturing ultrafast process. A novel time measurement technique, dispersive temporal interferometry, is demonstrated. The resolution can reach to sub‐20 as over a range of larger than 2 ps, with a range‐to‐resolution ratio of 105 and sampling rate of 42.8 MHz. A gyroscope based on time measurement is fabricated to demonstrate the applications of this technique in optical sensors.

Abstract:Real‐time investigation in mode‐locked fiber lasers (MLFLs) is important to understand the ultrafast dynamics before, during, and after the formation of stable laser pulses. However, the experimental measurement of these dynamics is restricted by the resolution of conventional oscilloscopes. The development of a time‐stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS‐DFT) technique provides the shot‐to‐shot measurement of mapping the spectral information of an ultrashort optical pulse into time‐stretched waveform in the MLFL. Here, the recent progress and development of various fascinating dynamics in the MLFL, including the study of birth, evolution, and extinction process in MLFL, different types of MLFL, and complex motion dynamics in MLFL, have been reviewed. The issues and challenges encountered in this research area are discussed and several recommendations are suggested to overcome these problems. The integration of the TS‐DFT technique is expected to provide deeper insight into the real‐time investigation of various dynamics in the MLFL by displaying fascinating phenomenon and revealing unexplored trajectories.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical technique to record the time information of relativistic electron beams with sub-optical-cycle duration. The technique is based on the interaction of the electron beam with the ponderomotive potential of an optical traveling wave generated by two counter-propagating circularly polarized optical fields at different frequencies in vacuum. One of the optical pulses is a vortex laser pulse, and the other is a normal Gaussian laser pulse. The time information of the electron beam is mapped into the angular information, which can be converted into a spatial distribution after a drift section. Thus, the temporal profile and arrival time of the electron beam can be retrieved from the spatial distribution of the electron beam. The measurement has a dynamic range comparable to the period of the optical intensity grating formed by two counter-propagating laser pulses. This technique may have wide applications in many research fields that require sub-optical-cycle electron beams.

Abstract:It is challenging to make an ultrafast diagnosis of the temporal evolution of small and short-lived plasma in two dimensions. To overcome this difficulty, we have developed a well-timed diagnostic utilizing an x-ray streak camera equipped with a row of multi-pinhole arrays. By processing multiple sets of one-dimensional streaked image data acquired from various pinholes, we are capable of reconstructing high-resolution two-dimensional images with a temporal resolution of 38 ps and a spatial resolution of 18 mu m. The temporal fiducial pulses accessed from external sources can advance the precise timing and accurately determine the arrival time of the laser. Moreover, it can correct the nonlinear sweeping speed of the streak camera. The effectiveness of this diagnostic has been successfully verified at the Shenguang-II laser facility, providing an indispensable tool for observing complex physical phenomena, such as the implosion process of laser-fusion experiments.

Abstract:Transient electric fields, which are an important but hardly explored parameter of laser plasmas, can now be diagnosed experimentally with combined ultrafast temporal resolution and field sensitivity, using femtosecond to picosecond electron or proton pulses as probes. However, poor spatial resolution poses great challenges to simultaneously recording both the global and local field features. Here, we present a direct 3D measurement of a transient electric field by time-resolved electron schlieren radiography with simultaneous 80-μm spatial and 3.7-ps temporal resolutions, analyzed using an Abel inversion algorithm. The electric field here is built up at the front of an aluminum foil irradiated with a femtosecond laser pulse at 1.9 × 10(12) W/cm(2), where electrons are emitted at a speed of 4 × 10(6) m/s, resulting in a unique "peak-valley" transient electric field map with the field strength up to 10(5) V/m. Furthermore, time-resolved schlieren radiography with charged particle pulses should enable the mapping of various fast-evolving field structures including those found in plasma-based particle accelerators.
Dispersive temporal holography for single-shot recovering comprehensive ultrafast dynamics

Abstract: It is critical to characterize the carrier and instantaneous frequency distribution variation in ultrafast processes, all of which are determined by the optical phase. Nevertheless, there is no method that can single-shot record the intro-pulse phase evolution of pico/femtosecond signals, to date. By analogying holographic principle in space to the time domain and using the time-stretch method, we propose the dispersive temporal holography to single-shot recover the phase and amplitude of ultrafast signals. It is a general and comprehensive technology and can be applied to analyze ultrafast signals with highly complex dynamics. The method provides a new powerful tool for exploring ultrafast science, which may benefit many fields, including laser dynamics, ultrafast diagnostics, nonlinear optics, and so on.

Abstract:The precise temporal characterization of laser pulses is crucial for ultrashort applications in biology, chemistry, and physics. Especially in femto- and attosecond science, diverse laser pulse sources in different spectral regimes from the visible to the short-wavelength infrared as well as pulse durations ranging from picoseconds to few femtoseconds are employed. In this article, we present a versatile temporal-characterization apparatus that can access these different temporal and spectral regions in a dispersion-free manner and without phase-matching constraints. The design combines transient-grating and surface third-harmonic-generation frequency-resolved optical gating in one device with optimized alignment capabilities based on a noncollinear geometry.

Abstract:Various pulse regimes have been discovered in mode-locked fiber lasers with carefully designed cavity setups. However, the transitions between different types of stable pulse solutions are rarely observed in a laser with the same cavity configuration. Here, we report on the experimental observation of the transformation from stretched pulses (SPs) to dissipative solitons (DSs) in an all-polarization-maintaining dispersion-managed mode-locked Yb fiber laser for the first time. By means of the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, the temporal and spectral dynamics of transient behaviors from pulse breaking to pulse recovering are identified in real time. It is revealed that the overdriven nonlinear effect induced by pump increase triggers the wave breaking of SPs, and the improved net-cavity dispersion originated from wavelength shift helps the self-recovering of DSs. Numerical simulations validate the experimental observations and bring insights to the understanding of transient nonlinear dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:Femtosecond light pulses carrying optical angular momentums (OAMs), possessing intriguing properties of helical phase fronts and ultrafast temporal profiles, enable many applications in nonlinear optics, strong-field physics and laser micro-machining. While generation of OAM-carrying ultrafast pulses and their interactions with matters have been intensively studied in experiments, three-dimensional characterization of ultrafast OAM-carrying light beams in spatio-temporal domain has, however, proved difficult to achieve. Conventional measurement schemes rely on the use of a reference pulsed light beam which needs to be well-characterized in its phase front and to have sufficient overlap and coherence with the beam under test, largely limiting practical applications of these schemes. Here we demonstrate a self-referencing set-up based on a tilted interferometer that can be used to measure complete spatio-temporal information of OAM-carrying femtosecond pulses with different topological charges. Through scanning one interferometer arm, the spectral phase over the pulse spatial profile can be obtained using the tilted interference signal, and the temporal envelope of the light field at one particular position around its phase singularity can be retrieved simultaneously, enabling three-dimensional beam reconstruction. This self-referencing technique, capable of measuring spatio-temporal ultrafast optical-vortex beams, may find many applications in fields of nonlinear optics and light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Abstract Femtosecond laser technology has attracted significant attention from the viewpoints of fundamental and application; especially femtosecond laser processing materials present the unique mechanism of laser-material interaction. Under the extreme nonequilibrium conditions imposed by femtosecond laser irradiation, many fundamental questions concerning the physical origin of the material removal process remain unanswered. In this review, cutting-edge ultrafast dynamic observation techniques for investigating the fundamental questions, including time-resolved pump-probe shadowgraphy, ultrafast continuous optical imaging, and four-dimensional ultrafast scanning electron microscopy, are comprehensively surveyed. Each technique is described in depth, beginning with its basic principle, followed by a description of its representative applications in laser-material interaction and its strengths and limitations. The consideration of temporal and spatial resolutions and panoramic measurement at different scales are two major challenges. Hence, the prospects for technical advancement in this field are discussed finally.

Abstract:Single-shot ultrafast imaging reveals the transient dynamics of ultrafast phenomena. Herein, we introduce a new approach for capturing ultrafast micron-scale dynamics using an arbitrary time-wavelength-encoded biprism interferometer (TWEBI). In TWEBI, a time-wavelength-encoded pulse train is generated using a set of cascaded frequency-doubling crystals with slightly different phase-matching angles and independent delay lines, which have the advantages of independent temporal resolution, time window, and frame interval parameters. Phase measurement of TWEBI is achieved using a plug-and-play biprism interferometer. In the experiment to capture the transient dynamic of femtosecond laser-induced plasma filament, we demonstrated that the TWEBI setup can capture a total of 12 frames in a single shot, and its effective frame rate is 5 trillion frames per second (Tfps), corresponding to a temporal resolution of 200 fs and a spatial resolution of 4 μm . Moreover, the time window of the TWEBI setup can be adjusted from sub-picosecond to nanosecond timescales. Thus, TWEBI has the advantages of high-precision temporal-spatial resolution, high frame rate, adjustable time window, and no reference arm, thus providing a practical and feasible diagnostic scheme for complex transient dynamics.
