Abstract:We present the first high-speed silicon Michelson interferometer (MI) modulator with two 500 μm-long phase shifters. The utilized MI optical structure is an enhanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with both arms incorporated with reflective mirrors. The light in the MI travels back and forth along the phase shifting waveguides and therefore doubles the effective length of light-carrier interaction. Improvement on the modulation efficiency is experimentally demonstrated. Our MI modulator shows high efficiency with a low figure of merit VπLπ of 0.72 V·cm~0.91V·cm under the bias of -1 V~-6V. High-speed modulations are performed at 25 Gbit/s and 30 Gbit/s with the extinction ratio of 8 dB and 6.5 dB, respectively, showing great potential in the future optical interconnects.

Abstract:In this paper, we first propose a fiber electrothermal modulator derived from the large-transverse-offset Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coated with transparent and conductive indium-tin-oxide (ITO). The fiber MZI was fabricated by welding single-mode fiber (SMF) with large-transverse-offset fusion. The fiber modulator is that the thermo-optic effect of the ITO film on the surface of the fiber leads to a change in the refractive index, which in turn causes the shift of the interference spectrum. Specifically, it is based on the thermo-optic effect of a large-transverse-offset MZI coated with ITO. Through the external electric potential, the ITO film generates Joule heat and then changes the effective refractive index of the cladding to realize fiber phase modulation. In the experiment, the spectrum is significantly shifted by 5.55 nm at the wavelength of 1650 nm and can obtain an optical modulator with a rise (fall) time of 0.65 (0.5) s. The proposed fiber modulator shows great performance in the optical switches and sensing.

Abstract:An in-line, all-optical fiber modulator based on a stereo graphene–microfiber structure (GMF) utilizing the lab-on-rod technique was demonstrated in this study. Owing to its unique spring-like geometry, an ultra-long GMF interaction can be achieved, and a modulation depth of ∼7.5 dB (∼2.5 dB) and a modulation efficiency of ∼0.2 dB mW−1 (∼0.07 dB mW−1) were demonstrated for two polarization states. The modulation depth and modulation efficiency are more than one order of magnitude larger than those of other graphene–microfiber hybrid all-optical modulators, although at the cost of a higher insertion loss. By further optimizing the transferring and cleaning process, the upper limit of the modulation depth is mainly determined by the loss from the intrinsic absorption, which depends on the light–graphene interaction. Then, the modulator can quickly switch between the on-state and the off-state with a theoretically maximized modulation depth of tens of decibels. This modulator is compatible with the current fiber-optic communication systems and may be applied in the near future to meet the impending need for ultrafast optical signal processing. A polarization-sensitive all-optical fiber modulator based on a graphene–microfiber structure has been demonstrated by researchers in China. All-optical modulators with high modulation speeds, sufficient modulation depth and wide optical bandwidth are needed to realize ultrafast optical signal processing. Now, Fei Xu and co-workers at Nanjing University have fabricated an all-optical fiber modulator whose modulation depth and efficiency are more than ten times greater than previous all-optical modulators based on graphene and microfibers. These properties originate from its very long interaction length resulting from its spring-like geometry. The researchers consider that even better performance can be achieved by using higher quality graphene and improving the transfer and wrapping of the graphene in the fabrication process. Since the modulator is compatible with existing fiber-optic communication systems, it may find rapid application for ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:We propose a graphene-based modulator integrated into currently used communication fibers. The graphene is directly built into the core of the fiber to ensure the coupling efficiency. The fiber is deliberately side-polished to enhance the light-graphene interaction. The two-dimensional model analysis method and three-dimensional finite difference time domain method are used to rigorously disclose the light modulation mechanism under the anisotropic graphene modeling, which is merely conducted in previous studies. Based on such a structure, a phase modulator with an arm length of 127 μm is numerically demonstrated with enhanced modulation efficiency. A quasi-linear relation between the phase change and chemical potential of graphene is found theoretically for the first time, providing a large linear dynamic range to control the phase of optical modulation.

Abstract:As a new class of 2D materials, MXenes have attracted a lot of interest because of their prominent performance in versatile applications, such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysts, electronics, and optics. In this work, an all-optical modulator using MXene Ti3C2Tx deposited on a microfiber is proposed. By inserting an MXene-deposited phase shifter into one arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the MXene Ti3C2Tx absorbs the control light and generates heat, which induces significant refractive index changes through strong light-matter interactions and thermo-optic effects. In this study, a maximum phase shift of 16 pi is obtained, and an efficient all-optical switch with an extinction ratio of more than 18.53 dB and a rise time constant of 4.10 ms are demonstrated. The advantages of this modulator include its all-fiber content, low cost, ease of integration, and compactness. All-optical modulators based on thermo-optical effects will play an active role in the future of optical communications and optical information processing.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel compact folded Michelson interferometer (FMI) modulator with high modulation efficiency. By folding the 0.5 mm-long phase shift arms, the length of the modulation area of the FMI modulator is only 0.25 mm. Meanwhile, the traveling wave electrode (TWE) is also shorter, which decreases the propagation loss of the RF signal and contributes to a small footprint. The Vπ-L of the present device is as low as 0.87 V·cm at -8 V bias voltage. The minimum optical insertion loss is 3.7 dB, and the static extinction ratio (ER) is over 25 dB. The measured 3-dB electro-optical (EO) bandwidth is 17.3 GHz at a -6 V bias. The OOK eye diagram up to 40 Gb/s is demonstrated under 2 V driver voltage.

Abstract:We demonstrated all-optical intensity modulator based on polarization-dependent graphene-covered microfiber (GMF) waveguide. By controlling the polarization mode of incident light, a greatly adjustable enhanced interaction between the propagating light and the graphene can be obtained via the evanescent field of the microfiber. By employing 980-nm pump light and 1550-nm signal light in continuous wave, the strong light–graphene interaction enables a maximum modulation depth of ∼20.86 dB, and by pumping 980 nm wave pulses, we obtained the temporal response characteristics of signal light with modulation rate of 5.13 kHz. This all-optical intensity modulator is compatible with optical fiber systems, and features with ease of fabrication, and steerable high modulation depth, which show potential in graphene's applications such as all-optical switching and all-optical communications.

Abstract:We propose a low-insertion-loss electro-optic modulator formed with LNOI bonded on a D-shaped SMF. The proposed modulator employs high-performance Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) formed with ridge LNOI waveguides and driven by travelling-wave electrodes. The light from the fiber core is coupled into a thin strip LNOI waveguide and then launched into the MZI via a ridge LNOI waveguide with tapered slab height and vice versa. Such all-fiber configuration exempts the need of the butt-coupling with an SMF. The calculated results show that our proposed modulator is capable of achieving a low insertion loss of less than 1.5 dB, an EO modulation efficiency (Vπ·L) of 2.05 V·cm, and a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of larger than 80 GHz. Our all-fiber LNOI modulator is feasible in practice and opens a new door to realize high-speed fiber devices by the integration of an optical fiber and thin film LN.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a hybrid silicon and lithium niobate Michelson interferometer modulator (MIM) with a reduced half-wave voltage-length product compared to a Mach-Zehnder modulator. The modulator is based on seamless integration of a high-contrast waveguide based on lithium niobate—a widely used modulator material—with compact, low-loss silicon circuitry. The present device demonstrates a half-wave voltage-length product as low as 1.2 V cm and a low insertion loss of 3.3 dB. The 3 dB electro-optic bandwidth is approximately 17.5 GHz. The high-speed modulations are demonstrated at 32 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s with the extinction ratio of 8 dB and 6.6 dB, respectively. The present device avoids absorption loss and nonlinearity in conventional silicon modulators and demonstrates the lowest half-wave voltage-length product in lithium niobate modulators. The hybrid MIM demonstrates high-speed data modulation showing potential in future optical interconnects.

Abstract:We demonstrate high-speed silicon modulators optimized for operating at the wavelength of 2 μm. The Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) carrier-depletion modulator with 2 mm phase shifter has a single-arm modulation efficiency (Vπ ·Lπ) of 2.89 V·cm at 4 V reverse bias. Using a push-pull configuration it operates at a data rate of 25 Gbit/s OOK with an extinction ratio of 6.25 dB. We also proposed a mathematically-analysed streamlined IMDD PAM-4 scheme and successfully demonstrated a 25 Gbit/s datarate PAM-4 with the same 2 mm modulator. A Michelson interferometer carrier-depletion modulator with 0.5 mm phase shift length has also been shown with modulation efficiency (Vπ ·Lπ) of 1.36 V·cm at 4 V reverse bias and data rate of 20 Gbit/s OOK. The Michelson interferometer modulator performs similarly to a Mach-Zehnder modulator with twice the phase shifter length.

Abstract:All-optical modulators, where one light modulates the parameters of another light (intensity, phase, frequency, etc.) without external electronic control, have drawn extraordinary attention in all-optical information processing. In this contribution, by taking advantage of the two-pass structure of Michelson interferometer and the strong photothermal conversion efficiency of MXene nanomaterials, an all-optical modulator is demonstrated with a modulation depth of >27 dB, a free spectrum range of 16.8 nm and a pump-induced phase shift slope of 0.043 pi mW(-1). Moreover, the all-optical modulator is successfully employed to switch on/off the intensity of the signal light and load information from one channel to another with comparable response time and baudrate. It is believed that the MXene-based all-optical modulator will open a door to practical applications of 2D materials-based all-optical devices in all-optical signal processing.

Abstract:Electro-optic modulators provide a key function in optical transceivers and increasingly in photonic programmable Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) for machine learning and signal processing. However, both foundry ready silicon based modulators and conventional material based devices utilizing Lithium niobate fall short in simultaneously providing high chip packaging density and fast speed. Current driven ITO based modulators have the potential to achieve both enabled by efficient light matter interactions. Here, we introduce micrometer compact Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) based modulators capable of exceeding 100 GHz switching rates. Integrating ITO thin films atop a photonic waveguide, spectrally broadband, and compact MZI phase shifter. Remarkably, this allows integrating more than 3500 of these modulators within the same chip area as only one single silicon MZI modulator. The modulator design introduced here features a holistic photonic, electronic, and RF-based optimization and includes an asymmetric MZI tuning step to optimize the Extinction Ratio (ER) to Insertion Loss (IL) and dielectric thickness sweep to balance the tradeoffs between ER and speed. Driven by CMOS compatible bias voltage levels, this device is the first to address next generation modulator demands for processors of the machine intelligence revolution, in addition to the edge and cloud computing demands as well as optical transceivers alike.
