Abstract:In this paper, we reported both the experimental demonstration and theoretical analysis of a Raman fiber laser based on a master oscillator–power amplifier configuration. The Raman fiber laser adopted the dual-wavelength bidirectional pumping configuration, utilizing 976 nm laser diodes and 1018 nm fiber lasers as the pump sources. A 60-m-long $25/400~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ ytterbium-doped fiber was used to convert the power from 1070 to 1124 nm, realizing a maximum power output of 3.7 kW with a 3 dB spectral width of 6.8 nm. Moreover, we developed a multi-frequency model taking into consideration the Raman gain spectrum and amplified spontaneous emission. The calculated spectral broadening of both the forward and backward laser was in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, a 1.5 kW, 1183 nm second-order Raman fiber laser was further experimentally demonstrated by the addition of a 70-m-long germanium-doped passive fiber.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked Raman fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) with a high nonlinear fiber cavity is proposed and demonstrated. A polarization-independent continuous wave (CW) multimode laser is employed as the pump source in order to avoid stimulated Brillouin scattering generation. This Raman laser generates 890 ps pulses at 1651.3 nm. Under the pump power of 960 mW, the single pulse energy is up to 290.7 nJ with the peak power of 326.7 W. The average output power is up to 110 mW with a conversion efficiency of 11.5%.

Abstract:A Raman fiber laser with more than 220 W output at 1.24 μm with phosphorus-doped single-mode fiber as gain medium is reported. The laser consists of a 30 m long piece of fiber and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings with different bandwidth, pumped with a high power 1064 nm Yb fiber laser. The optical conversion efficiency is 64% and the slope efficiency is 71.4%. The full width half-maximum linewidth at the maximum output is 5.6 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the reported power is an order magnitude higher than previous reports in phosphosilicate fiber Raman laser.

Abstract:Mode-locking and ultrashort pulse synchronous pumping arc the main ways to obtain ultrashort pulses from Raman fiber lasers. In the mode-locked Raman fiber lasers, high performance output can be achieved in the structure with equivalent saturable absorbers, but the limitation caused by the long gain fiber remains. The method of synchronous pumping can overcome this problem effectively and achieve excellent ultrafast Raman laser output. There is a great potential for the ultrafast Raman fiber laser technology, and future research will focus on further improving the overall performance of various ultrafast Raman fiber lasers and investigating new phenomena observed in these laser systems.
Experimental Research on High Power Tandem Pumped Fiber Laser with Homemade Gain Fiber

Abstract:The power of fiber lasers based on homemade gain fiber has been increased to kilowatt or 10 kilowatts level in recent years. However, restricted by the low absorption coefficient at 1018 nm, the power of tandem pumped fiber laser with homemade gain fiber is not very high. In this paper, adopting a MOPA configuration, we reported a high power tandem pumped fiber laser. The narrow line width seed, whose center wavelength was at 1070 nm and the half height full width was 0.28 nm, was amplified to 5220 W by the pump source of 1018 nm fiber lasers. The output power increased linearly with the pump laser power. The homemade gain fiber in the experiment was 30/250 lam, and the absorption coefficient at 1018 nm was 0.4 dB/m Thanks to the low quantum defect of tandem pumping scheme, the optical to optical efficiency could reach 89.9%. At the full power level, the 3 dB line width and 10 dB line width was measured to be 1.1 nm and 3.89 nm, respectively. The stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) suppression of 23 dB on the spectrum was achieved by optimizing the homemade gain fiber length to 36 m. The beam quality factor off was measured to be 2.4. No obvious transverse mode instability was found. Further power scaling requires increase the absorption coefficient of the gain fiber and more methods for SRS suppression.

Abstract:The combined effect of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), four-wave mixing (FWM) and self-pulsation in optical fibers can be either beneficial or detrimental, depending upon a specific application. In this work, we report for the first time that, under watt-level CW pumping in a common-cavity Ytterbium/Raman random fiber laser, a significant wavelength down-conversion is generated by FWM in a standard single-mode fiber; moreover, nonlinear optical dynamics of SRS, FWM and self-pulsation was simultaneously observed in this setup. In a certain range of pump powers, strong and stable self-pulsation effects were observed, which occurred simulta-neously with the cascaded SRS emissions and an intense visible orange emission at 603 nm, which can be attributed to the FWM from the 1064 nm light-wave. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculations for the FWM process. Besides, self-pulsation and high order cascaded are also analyzed. The importance of these results for high power Raman based fiber lasers and random fiber lasers, as well as continuum generation will be discussed.

Abstract:we report on the recent progress on high power pulsed 2.8 mu m Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser through techniques of passively and actively Q-switching in our research group. In passively Q-switched operation, a diode-cladding-pumped mid-infrared passively Q-switched Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser with an average output power of watt-level based on a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Stable pulse train was produced at a slope efficient of 17.8% with respect to launched pump power. The maximum average power of 1.01 W at a repetition rate of 146.3 kHz was achieved with a corresponding pulse energy of 6.9 mu J. The maximum peak power was calculated to be 21.9 W. In actively Q-switched operation, a diode-pumped actively Q-switched Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser at 2.8 mu m with an optical chopper was reported. The maximum laser pulse energy of up to 130 mu J and a pulse width of 127.3 ns at a repetition rate of 10 kHz with an operating wavelength of 2.78 mu m was obtained, yielding the maximum peak power of exceeding 1.1 kW.

Abstract:High-power, single-frequency lasers are important in the applications of coherent optical communication, Doppler wind lidar, and remote sensing. Here, a 10-kHz, 353-μJ, single-frequency, 574-ns, 1548-nm fiber laser system was demonstrated based on the optical pulse modulation. The 1548-nm, single-frequency seed laser with the linewidth of 1.25 kHz was modulated by two acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) into a 10-kHz pulsed laser. Two cascaded fiber amplifiers were spliced after the AOMs to scale up the pulse energy. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was inhibited by the multistage amplification construction and the optical bandpass filters. A customized pulse profile was proposed to pre-compensate the temporal modulation and inhibit the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect. The pulse duration of the amplified single-frequency pulse was 574 ns, with the peak power of 753 W. A numerical model was also built for investigating the dynamic of the interaction process inside the power amplifier. The simulated results indicate the maximum output power of the 10-kHz, customized single-frequency laser can be 3.984 W with a pulse duration of 381 ns.

Abstract:Quasi-continuous wave (QCW) laser has a very broad application in the industrial field, especially in additive manufacturing, surface treatment, laser cutting, laser cleaning, and laser drilling. Compared with the unidirectional fiber laser, the bidirectional output can be achieved two ports high power output with only one resonator, which can greatly reduce the industrial cost. However, there are few researches on QCW fiber lasers with bidirectional output. Here, we optimized and demonstrated a bidirectional output QCW laser with output power of 2 × 4.5 kW based on a double-clad ytterbium-doped fiber with a core/cladding diameter of 25/400 μm. The peak power at both ends reached 4515 W and 4694 W, respectively. The Raman suppression ratio at both ends of A and B is about 12 dB, and the beam quality factor M 2 is about 1.37 and 1.42, respectively. The corresponding optical-to-optical efficiency is 79%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest peak power of QCW laser with near-single-mode beam quality in a bidirectional structure laser.

Abstract:High-power supercontinuum (SC) sources are important for remote sensing, homeland defense, and scientific research. Despite recent advances in power scaling of the SC generation in optical fibers, the power record of SC fiber laser sources is still much lower than conventional high-power fiber lasers. Here we demonstrate a method for kilowatt-level SC generation based on the random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) with a full-open cavity. Theoretically, a model including cascaded Raman effect, modulation instability, and Rayleigh scattering is established to qualitatively highlight the dynamics of the kilowatt-level SC generation. Experimentally, injecting the amplified ytterbium-doped fiber laser and Raman fiber laser into the RRFL oscillator formed by a piece of long passive fiber, 3-kW-level SC spanning from 925 to 1862 nm is achieved. The experimental results suggest that the full-open-cavity RRFL is a promising approach for kilowatt-level SC generation and the theoretical model demonstrates the importance of Rayleigh backscattering during the SC generation.
Nanosecond pulse pumped, fiber-integrated narrow linewidth linearly polarized Raman amplifier at 1120 nm

Abstract:In this manuscript, we demonstrated a watt-level average power narrow linewidth linearly polarized fiber-integrated Raman amplifier core pumped by a pulsed laser with center wavelength of 1064 nm. The gain medium in the amplifier stage is a 100-meters-long polarization-maintaining (PM) single-mode fiber. Seeded by a single-frequency (S-F) distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser, ~3.2 ns duration tunable 1120 nm laser is obtained with peak power of ~360 W. The average power of the Raman laser are 0.62W, 1.22 W and 1.83W with repetition rates of 500 KHz, 1 MHz and 1.5 MHz, respectively. More than 50% slope efficiency and 42 dB amplification is achieved. The polarization extinction rate (PER) of the Raman laser is measured to be ~21 dB.

Abstract:To achieve a high spectral purity Raman laser in a wide range of pump power, we propose the adjustable Raman threshold method and experimentally demonstrate a 6.85 kW ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) fiber amplifier in this paper. The Raman threshold is adjusted to coordinate with pump power level via manipulating the Raman proportion from the master oscillator. The spectral purity of Raman laser at 1120 nm reaches 86.0 $\%$ at the highest output power and keeps over 65 $\%$ throughout. And the 3 dB bandwidth is maintained within 2.5 nm. The system shows potential in further power scaling-up because the four-wave-mixing-induced high-order Raman noise is circumvented by designing wavelengths of the seeders. This work not only reports the highest output power of the Yb-Raman fiber lasers (to the best of our knowledge), but also provides an approach to achieve an agile lasing threshold in the Yb-Raman fiber amplifiers without any structural adjustments. The Yb-Raman fiber amplifiers with high spectral purity over a broad range of power will have promising applications in communications, industry and scientific researches.
An Efficient 4-Kw Level Random Fiber Laser Based on Tandem-Pumping Scheme

Abstract:In this paper, we presented a monolithic high power random fiber laser with a tandem-pumping scheme. The random fiber laser seed centered at 1064 nm was pumped by a 1018 nm fiber laser and reached an output power of 8.66 W. After the two amplifiers, the seed was amplified to 4020 W and the 3 dB width of laser spectrum was broadened from 0.78 nm to 0.99 nm. To increase the efficiency of the 4 kW laser, a specially designed high absorption coefficient (0.6 dB/m @ 1018nm) 30/250 μm Yb doped fiber and high brightness 1018 nm pump laser were adopted. The optical-to-optical efficiency could reach as high as 88.5%. No obvious mode instability was found during the experiment. Furthermore, with the same amplifier stage, we have also built another 4 kW level fiber laser seeded by an oscillator consisting of a pair of fiber Bragg gratings. The comparison of the experimental results showed that high power laser based on RFL seed would have a better control on spectral broadening.

Abstract:We reported a 26 W linearly polarized single-mode Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, working at 80 kHz repetition rate with 4.5 ns duration, corresponding 72 kW peak power. Using a acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser as the seed source, the 26 W average power of 1064 nm laser was obtained at a repetition rate of 80 kHz from a Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, with 4.5 ns duration, polarization extinction ratio 11 dB and M 2 < 1.2.

Abstract:We demonstrated a straightforward approach to generate red and near-infrared laser emissions by a Raman-assisted four wave mixing (FWM) process in a nonlinear Yb-doped fiber amplifier, delivering 342 fs pulses of 241 nJ at 864 nm, 834 fs pulses of 21 nJ at 751 nm, and 1.9 ps pulses of 3.8 μJ at 1030 nm. A pair of gratings was employed as the pre-compressor to promote the intensity of the fundamental wave in the main amplifier. Multiple wavelengths from 751 to 1273 nm resulted due to cascaded-Raman-assisted FWM. The pre-compression also underlay the achievement of 25.1, 701, and 2000 kW peak power for the red (751 nm), near-infrared (864 nm), and fundamental (1030 nm) components respectively, which restrained the gain narrowing effect during the amplification. It finally led to shorter pulse duration under increased power.

Abstract:A high-power linearly-polarized all-fiber single-frequency amplifier at 1064 nm based on tandem corepumping is demonstrated by adopting large-mode-area (LMA) fiber with core/cladding diameter of 20/130 μm. The output performance of the amplifier dependence on the input signal power has been investigated, and the results indicate that enhancing the injection signal power is advantageous in mitigating the amplified simultaneous emission (ASE) and increasing slope efficiency. A maximum output power of 252 W with corresponding slope efficiency of 85% is achieved with injection signal power of 7 W. At the highest output power status, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 17 dB and a beam quality of 1.15 are obtained respectively. In addition, by virtue of LMA fiber and tandem core-pumping, the amplifier exhibits good performance on thermal load, which in turn facilitate the maintenance of frequency noise and linewidth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest output power of single-frequency all-fiber amplifier based on core-pumping scheme.

Abstract:The power scaling of ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) lasers emitting at the wavelength range of 1030 nm–1060 nm has been limited by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect, and transverse mode instability (TMI). These effects pose challenges in achieving a high-output power laser within the range of 1030 nm–1060 nm while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio. Based on a counter-pumped fiber laser amplifier utilizing our self-developed ytterbium-doped fiber, we have successfully showcased a 4.8-kW laser output at 1050 nm, accompanied by an 85.3% slope efficiency and nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. By effectively applying ASE and TMI, and controlling the Raman Stokes at ∼17 dB below the primary signal wavelength, we have achieved optimal performance at the maximum power level. This high efficiency has been attained through a pump-sharing structure combined with cost-effective, non-wavelength-stabilized 976-nm laser diodes.
