Abstract:Nowadays Application Layer Multicast (ALM) is widely used in the media transmission through the network, while ALM itself still has some problem on its performance. In this paper, we advance an ALM mechanism based on combination of central-control and self-organisation: CBroadcast which is stable and suitable for the real-time multimedia. In the higher levels special servers with high performance are deployed responsible for the construction and maintenance of mesh network and multicast tree, while in the lower levels a distributed protocol for self-organisation and Mesh-first strategy is adopted. In addition, multicast technologies both in application layer and network layer are combined to achieve higher performance. In the end of the paper, an experiment is delicately designed to show the advantage of CBroadcast.
Multicast resource allocation algorithm based on layered transmission

Abstract:To achieve the quality of service requirement of each multicast user, a multicast resource allocation algorithm based on layered transmission is proposed here. Firstly, the multicast data are encoded into a basic layer and an enhancement layer. Then the multicast allocation of resources is formulated to maximize the throughput of the enhancement layer with a total power constraint and a minimum rate requirement. A low-complexity allocation algorithm is proposed in which subcarrier assignment and power allocation are operated separately. Simulation results also show that the system throughput of the enhancement layer is significantly improved by using our proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) uses point-to-multipoint transmission mode, which can effectively improve the frequency utilization efficiency of the mobile communication system and becomes a hot research field of mobile communication. However, as the frequency selectivity of the wireless channel, the throughput of the MBMS system is always limited by the user with the worst channel quality. In order to overcome the frequency selective fading, resource allocation methods is widely studied in the research. In this paper, the improved resource allocation algorithm based on user QoS is proposed. Firstly, the subcarriers are allocated according the users' urgency degree guaranteeing the QoS of all users, Secondly, the remaining subcarriers are allocated by the throughput maximization rule, Finally, the system throughput is further improved by the bit loading step with greedy algorithm. Simulation result shows that the proposed resource allocation scheme cannot effectively guarantee the QoS of all users in the group, but also can improve the system throughput as much as possible.

Abstract:An application layer multicast mechanism,CD-Media,is proposed based on the combination of central-control and distributed self-organization.This mechanism with different hierarchies is stable and suitable for the quasi-real-time application.Special servers with high performance is deployed in the higher levels to organize the star topology,and they are responsible for the construction and maintenance of Mesh network and multicast tree in the lower levels.In the lower levels a distributed protocol for self-organization is used and Mesh-first strategy is adopted in the Cluster.Multicast technologies both in application layer and network layer are combined to make use of their own advantages to achieve higher performance.An experiment is delicately designed to show the advantage of CD-Media,and it is convinced that it will be a promising mechanism in overly multicast.

Abstract:Multicast is an important research topic for the Internet.Recent research shows some intrinsic limitation in IP Multicast,and Application Layer Multicast (ALM) is proposed.In this article we discuss and classify some major algorithms proposed for ALM.The fundamental problems in ALM research are identified and the metrics for evaluation of ALM algorithms are summarized.Some topics (e.g.,Overlay Network,media encoding method) are also discussed for their close relationship with ALM research.Finally,some possible directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents a CATV based multicast file transfer system on top of ALC reliable multicast protocol,and also adjusts the work parameters of this system according to the characteristic of CATV.Based on this system,PC users can experience reliable file downloading at high speed with QoS assurance by access to the CATV network using DVB network interface.The system has already been implemented and successfully applied in practice.

Abstract:Multicast provides an efficient way for one-to-many and multi-party communication. It is a key technique for the next-generation Internet applications. The conventional work on multicast emphasizes on providing multicast mechanism in IP protocol layer. However, the deployment of IP multicast is constrained by the modification to the op- erational Internet infrastructure and is hampered by a lot of unsolved technical problems. In the recent two years, the research trend on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) gives new light on multicast, and Application Layer Multicast (ALM) begins to attract wide attention. ALM protocols organize a set of hosts into an overlay tree for data delivery and all multicast related functions are implemented within end system. The shift of multicast functions from routers to hosts has the potential to address most problems associated with IP multicast, but also presents new challenges. This paper analy- ses the characteristics of ALM research from distributed system perspective, describes the technologies and difficulties involved in ALM design, and summarizes current work and progress.

Abstract:The multicast communication allows scalable and efficient data transferring, and is an ideal supporting technology for large scale Distributed Interactive Simulation. The conventional work on multicast focused particularly on providing multicasting on IP protocol layer. However, the deployment of IP multicast requires substantial infrastructure modifications and is hampered by a host of unsolved problems. Application Layer Multicast (ALM) organizes the member hosts into an overlay network for data delivery, and all multicast related functions are performed in end systems. Therefore, ALM can be easily deployed in large-scale network. This paper presents the art of ALM and its building protocols, analyses the communication requirements of large-scale DIS applications, and the issues in implementing ALM in large-scale DIS are discussed.

Abstract:The application layer multicast(ALM) scheme is suitable for large live media file distribution.A two-level hierarchal ALM scheme was developed to improve peer load-balancing in heterogeneous networks and decrease the overlay transmission latency.Locality-awareness was used to reduce the overlay delay through peers clustering according to the peer network distances in the overlay networks.Peers in one cluster were self-organized into a local load-balancing overlay based on an expected fitness based preferential random walk.Experiments on CERNET(China education and research network) verify the effectiveness of the peer clustering scheme.Simulations show that the system provides better load-balancing performance than existing systems with a O(lgN) step length random walk.

Abstract:Multicast capability, including multicast address and multicast routing mechanisms, at the network layer is necessary in order to reduce the bandwidth requirements of multiparty, multicast applications. Based on hierarchical autonomous structure in accordance with the self-organization topologies of Internet, the paper puts forward a multicast address management scheme that is shown to be robust and scalable. Connection control hierarchy (CCH) based on master/slave relationship and a simple efficient building algorithm of multi-point connection is also built. The paper also describes the normal operations of multicast address management and multi-point connection controller. Through simulation experiment, HAM, CM and DDM of Multicast Address Allocation are compared. HAM integrates the merits of CM and DDM, which is efficient as a whole, robust and scalable. CCH raises the efficiency of connection control, and is highly robust, flexible and scalable.

Abstract:Summary ALM (Application Layer Multicast) has been widely used recently. According to the organizing of multicast node(s), the paper proposes an ALM management model PBHM (Priority-Based Hierarchical Model, PBHM). Because it is grounded on hierarchy, the model has many merits, such as little control overhead, high efficiency, distributed build, better expansibility, independent topology of bottom and so on. The paper introduces priority for each multicast node for the purpose of making the selection of group leader more rational, so the network can be constringed fleetly and can elect group leader over again rapidly even though the network invalidates frequently, and consequently the method can ameliorate the network performance with only clusters management. Further more, the paper sets up priority mathematical model PRIORITY in order to calculate the priority of each group member, in addition, the paper tests and proves the correlative conclusions by simulation experiment, and it’s proved that the model improves the forwarding efficiency of ALM and administers its consumers in a more efficient way.

Abstract:Application-Layer multicast (ALM) is an important supplement to IP multicast. However, unlike in IP multicast, the participating nodes in ALM are selfish and strategic host users. In order to improve their own interests, selfish host users might not strictly obey the ALM protocols, because of which the overall performance of the multicast session could be affected. To design robust and trustworthy ALM protocols, it is necessary to study the selfishness in ALM. This paper surveys the recent research trends in this area, and classifies the researches into three categories according to the working steps of ALM protocols, that is, the selfishness in maintenance of control structure, the selfishness in collection of node information, and the selfishness in construction of data structure.

Abstract:Overlay multicast is now widely used to provide high quality audio and video service, which requires more on its performance. We proposed an application layer multicast mechanism, which is called MO-video (multicast overlay video), based on combination of central-control and distributed self-organization. This mechanism that is highly organized is stable and suitable for live media streaming service. In MO-video network, the media stream is pushed to all users instead of request for data. On the other hand, the network is organized by different areas, which is managed by one control node to minimize the message cast and schedule for the data transmission. The cooperation of control nodes, and the synchronous data sending by the senders, provide a better performance to all users and effectively avoid data redundancy. At the end of the paper, simulations and experiments is delicately designed to show the advantage of MO-video and convince us that it will be a promising mechanism in overly multicast.

Abstract:Application layer multicast does not need the support of network layer equipment which is suitable to be used in streaming media systems.Based on the framework of existing live streaming media systems using unicast paths,application-layer-multicast based live streaming media system is proposed by building application layer multicast server,giving client software the ability to transfer received media streams,and designing specific multicast protocol for media streams.A demon system is developed which shows the proposed solution can provide stable and acceptable quality service.Compared to the systems using unicast paths,the demon system can serve much more users.

Adaptive Peer-to-peer Streaming with MutualCast

Abstract:Application Layer Multicast (ALM) can greatly reduce the load of a server by leveraging the outgoing bandwidth of the participating nodes. However, most proposed ALM schemes become quite complicated and lose bandwidth efficiency if they try to deal with networks that are significantly heterogeneous or time-varying. In earlier work, we proposed MutualCast, an ALM scheme with fully connected mesh that quickly adapts to the time-varying networks, while achieving provably optimal throughput performance. In this paper, we study how MutualCast can be paired with adaptive rate control for streaming media. Specifically, we combine Optimal Rate Control (ORC), our earlier control-theoretical framework for quality adaptation, with the MutualCast delivery scheme. Using multiple bit rate video content, we show that the proposed system can gracefully adjust the common quality received at all the nodes while maintaining a continuous streaming experience at each, even when the network undergoes severe, uncorrelated bandwidth fluctuations at different peer nodes.
An agent-based scheme for efficient multicast application in mobile networks

Abstract:Mobile communication is playing an increasing role in our lives. Mobile users expect similar kinds of applications to static ones. Multicast not only brings attractive applications, but also has the benefit of saving scarce bandwidth in wireless environment. In order to achieve efficient multicast in mobile networks, we propose an agent-based scheme called Mobile Multicast with Fast Handoff and Hierarchical Architecture (FHMM). This scheme introduces two kinds of agents: Multicast Agent (MA) and Domain Multicast Agent (DMA). Through the cooperation between MAs in adjacent networks, FHMM accomplishes fast multicast handoff. And through the use of DMA, FHMM achieves a hierarchical mobile multicast architecture which can isolate the local movement from outside and improve the stability of the main multicast delivery tree. The simulation results show that FHMM is effective with low packet loss rate, high multicast packet delivery efficiency and little multicast maintenance overhead.
Multicast with an Application-Oriented Networking (AON) Approach

Abstract:This paper proposes an efficient and scalable multicast scheme based on the concept of application-oriented networking (AON). The traditional IP multicast is bandwidth efficient but suffers from the scalability problem. The overlay multicast, proposed in recent decade, manages a data-dissemination tree at the application layer, and only utilizes unicasts among pairs of hosts; the overlay approach, however, usually incurs a considerable amount of redundant traffic. The essence of AON is to integrate application intelligence into the network. For AON-based multicasting, each packet will carry necessary explicit addressing information, instead of an implicit class-D group address, to facilitate the multicast data delivery. Each AON router will leverage the unicast IP routing table to compute necessary multicast copies and next-hop interfaces. The proposed AON multicast eliminates the need for constructing and maintaining the network-layer multicast routing table, while its bandwidth efficiency is very close to that of the IP multicast.

Abstract:Application-layer multicast (ALM), as alternative to IP multicast, provides group communication without the need for network infrastructure support. To improve the reliability of ALM service, path diversity has been studied and two schemes to construct diverse paths for hosts are proposed. One is the random multicast forest (RMF) and the other is topology-aware hierarchical arrangement graph (THAG). RMF makes the paths from the media source to a participating host diverse by selecting parents for each host randomly, while THAG makes the paths node-disjoint by constructing multiple independent multicast trees, where any interior node in a multicast tree will be leaf node in all the other multicast trees. Topology-awareness is implemented in both schemes to make them efficient for media delivery. We compare the reliability and efficiency of THAG and RMF through extensive simulation. The results show that the reliability of THAG has been improved up to 20% compared with RMF. The efficiency metrics, such as relative delay penalty, link stress, and delay variation among different trees in THAG, are also smaller than or almost the same as that in RMF. The results indicate that THAG is a reliable and efficient ALM scheme for streaming media service.

Abstract:Application layer multicast (ALM) provides a low-cost solution for multicast over the Internet. It overcomes the deployment hurdle of IP multicast by moving all multicast related functions from network routers to end-hosts. However, since packet replication is performed on end-hosts, the system performance of an ALM is limited by the bandwidth of end-hosts. Therefore, degree-constrained QoS-aware multicast routing becomes one of the key concerns for implementing realtime multicast services, such as continuous streaming applications. In this paper, we claim that the QoS gained by most users will be better evaluated using the overall latency, and we explore the optimization of Degree-Constrained Minimum Overall Latency Spanning Tree (DCMOLST). The process for optimizing the overall latency is divided into two phases, i.e., the initialization phase and the dynamic adjustment phase. In the former phase, we present a heuristic DCMOLST algorithm which negotiates both transmission delay and node bandwidth simultaneously, so as to avoid QoS degradation caused by any single metrics. In the later phase, we define a set of distributed iterative optimizing operations to swap the position between nearby end-hosts for further optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed degree-constrained QoS-aware routing algorithm could improve the overall performance of application layer multicast services.
