Theoretical study of the effects of surface Cu coordination environment on CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH

Abstract:The coordination environment of Cu (the coordination number and arrangement of surface atoms) plays an important role in CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH. Compared with the extensive studies of the effects of coordination number, the comprehensive effects of coordination number and arrangement of surface atoms were seldom explored in literature. To unravel the effects of surface Cu coordination environment on CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH, the adsorption and reaction behaviors of H2 and CO2 on Cu(111), (100), (110) and (211) with different coordination numbers and arrangement of surface Cu were systematically calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulation. It was found that the adsorption energies of intermediates in CO2 hydrogenation on Cu surfaces increase with the decrease of coordination number. When the Cu coordination numbers are similar, the charge density on the open surface derived from the different atom arrangement becomes larger and leads to stronger interaction with intermediates than that on the compact one. DFT calculation and kMC simulation indicate that methanol formation pathway follows CO2*→HCOO*→HCOOH*→H2COOH*→H2CO*→CH3O*→CH3OH* on four Cu facets; CO formation is via CO2 direct dissociation on Cu(111), (100) and (110) but COOH* dissociation on (211). The low-coordinated surface Cu with more openness on Cu(211) is the highly active site for CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH with high turnover of frequency (3.71 × 10-4 s-1) and high selectivity (87.17 %) at 600 K, PCO2 = 7.5 atm and PH2 = 22.5 atm, which is much higher than those on Cu(111), (100) and (110). This work unravels the effects of coordination environment on CO2 hydrogenation at the molecular level and provides an important insight into the design and development of catalysts with high performance in CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH.

Abstract:Manipulating the product selectivity of an electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is challenging due to the unclear and uncontrollable active sites. Here, we report stable CO2RR operation with tunable product selectivity over a family of molecule-modulated copper catalysts. The coordination environment of Cu in catalysts is modulated by an imidazole-based molecule via different synthetic routes. Various carbonaceous products ranging from carbon monoxide, methane, and ethylene were selectively produced via, respectively, tuning the coordination environment of copper atoms from Cu-N, Cu-C, and Cu-Cu. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Cu-N sites weaken the adsorption energy of the *CO intermediate, which is beneficial for CO desorption. The Cu-C and Cu-Cu sites, respectively, facilitate the formation of *OCOH and *(CO)2 intermediates, favoring the CH4 and C2H4 pathways. This work provides a stable and simple model system for studying the influence of coordination elements on the product selectivity of CO2RR.
N-doped Cu2O with the tunable Cu0 and Cu+ sites for selective CO2 electrochemical reduction to ethylene

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to high value-added fuels or chemicals driven by the renewable energy is promising to alleviate global warming. However, the selective CO2 reduction to C2 products remains challenge. Cu-based catalyst with the specific Cu0 and Cu+ sites is important to generate C2 products. This work used nitrogen (N) to tune amounts of Cu0 and Cu+ sites in Cu2O catalysts and improve C2-product conversion. The controllable Cu0/Cu+ ratio of Cu2O catalyst from 0.16 to 15.19 was achieved by adjusting the N doping amount using NH3/Ar plasma treatment. The major theme of this work was clarifying a volcano curve of the ethylene Faraday efficiency as a function of the Cu0/Cu+ ratio. The optimal Cu0/Cu+ ratio was determined as 0.43 for selective electroreduction CO2 to ethylene. X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate that the strong interaction between N and Cu increased the binding energy of NCu bond and stabilize Cu+, resulting in a 92.3% reduction in the potential energy change for *CO-*CO dimerization. This study is inspiring in designing high performance electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:The coordination microenvironment of metal active sites in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) plays a crucial role in its performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, it remains a challenge to clarify the structure-performance relationship for CO2RR catalyzed by MOFs. Herein, a series of MOFs with different coordination microenvironments of Cu(I) sites (Cu-Cl, Cu-Br, and Cu-I) to evaluate their performances for CO2RR is synthesized. With the increasing radius of halogen atom, the CO2 adsorption capacity increases and d-band center of Cu positively shifts to the Fermi level, leading to enhance the selectivity of CO2 to CH4 conversion. Cu-I gives the highest total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 83.2%, with a FE of CH4 up to 57.2% and CH4 partial current density of 60.7 mA cm(-2) at -1.08 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical calculations reveal that the shifted d-band center of Cu site contributes to reduced formation energies of *CH2O and *CH3O intermediates, which is the potential-determining step of CO2RR and thus facilitates the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4. This study opens a new avenue for studying the relationship between the coordination microenvironment of active site and electroreduction reaction performance of MOFs.

Abstract:Cu-catalyzed electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) produces multi-carbon (C2+) chemicals with considerable selectivities and activities, yet required high overpotentials impede its practical application. Here, we design interfaces with abrupt coordination number (CN) changes that greatly reduce the applied potential for achieving high C2+ Faradaic efficiency (FE). Encouraged by the mechanistic finding that the coupling between *CO and *CO(H) is the most probable C-C bond formation path, we use Cu2O- and Cu-phthalocyanine-derived Cu (OD-Cu and PD-Cu) to build the interface. Using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we find that the Cu CN of OD-Cu is similar to 11, favoring CO* adsorption, while the PD-Cu has a COH*-favorable CN of similar to 4. Operando Raman spectroscopy revealed that the interfaces with abrupt CN changes promote *OCCOH formation. As a result, the designed catalyst achieves a C2+ FE of 85 +/- 2 % at 220 mA cm(-2) in a zero-gap CO2 electrolyzer. An improvement of C2+ FE by 3 times is confirmed at the low potential regime where the current density is 60-140 mA cm(-2), compared to bare OD-Cu. We report a 45-h stable CO2RR operation at 220 mA cm(-2), producing a C2+ product FE of similar to 80 %.
Synthesis and Catalytic Performance of Bimetallic Oxide-Derived CuO-ZnO Electrocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Steering the selectivity of electrocatalysts toward the desired product is crucial in the electrochemical reduction of CO2. A promising approach is the electronic modification of the catalyst's active phase. In this work, we report on the electronic modification effects on CuO-ZnO-derived electrocatalysts synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis. Although the synthesis method yields spatially separated ZnO nanorods and distinct CuO particles, strong restructuring and intimate atomic mixing occur under the reaction conditions. This leads to interactions that have a profound effect on the catalytic performance. Specifically, all of the bimetallic electrodes outperformed the monometallic ones (ZnO and CuO) in terms of activity for CO production. Surprisingly, on the other hand, the presence of ZnO suppresses the formation of ethylene on Cu, while the presence of Cu improves CO production of ZnO. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies revealed that this catalytic effect is due to enhanced reducibility of ZnO by Cu and stabilization of cationic Cu species by the intimate contact with partially reduced ZnO. This suppresses ethylene formation while favoring the production of H2 and CO on Cu. These results show that using mixed metal oxides with different reducibilities is a promising approach to alter the electronic properties of electrocatalysts (via stabilization of cationic species), thereby tuning the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction performance.
Insight into the Effect of the d-Orbital Energy of Copper Ions in Metal–Organic Frameworks on the Selectivity of Electroreduction of CO 2 to CH 4

Abstract:It is of great significance to reveal the influence of small differences in the coordination environments of metal ions in the catalytic active centers on the selectivity of products in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Here, two types of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) based on square-pyramidal CuO5 and square-planar CuO4 nodes, respectively, are compared in regard to their performances in electrocatalytic CO2RR. The MOF (Cu-DBC, H8DBC = dibenzo-[g,p]chrysene-2,3,6,7,10,11,14,15-octaol) constructed by CuO5 nodes and the catechol-derived ligands exhibit high performance for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 with a Faradaic efficiency of 56% and a current density of 11.4 mA cm–2 at −1.4 V vs RHE. In comparison, two other MOFs, Cu-HHTP (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) and Cu-THQ (THQ = tetrahydroxy-1,4-quinone), constructed by CuO4 and catechol-derived ligands, exhibit that CO is the sole reduced product. Theoretical calculations and Cu L-edge adsorption spectroscopy revealed that the energy levels of metal d-orbitals (d z 2 , dxz , and dyz ) in the square-pyramidal CuO5 site are elevated compared to those in the square-planar CuO4 site. As a result, the CuO5 active sites can strongly adsorb *CO intermediates and hence facilitate the hydrogenation of *CO into *CHO, which is beneficial for yielding CH4 instead of CO. This work will be helpful to understand the mechanism of copper-based catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) to C 2+ products presents an ideal approach to mitigate the continuous accumulation of CO 2 for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the selectivity for C 2+ products is constrained by the high energy barrier associated with C–C coupling and the sluggishness of multiple proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), resulting in reduced efficiency and selectivity. Herein, a single-atom Cu catalyst with second-shell S coordination (Cu–C 3 N 4 –S) is prepared, exhibiting higher ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) faradaic efficiency (60.2% at −0.9 V vs. RHE). The second-shell S doping structure is confirmed using a DFT theoretical model combined with synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Simultaneously, the adsorption of *CO 2 intermediates is detected by in situ Raman spectroscopy, allowing for the inference of potential reaction pathways. It is confirmed that through the regulation of second-shell S doping, a notable reduction in the energy barrier of C–C coupling ensues, concurrently tackling the electron demand in the PECT reaction via the construction of an electron transfer pathway (S–N–Cu) at a lower overpotential. This study contributes novel insights to the design of atomic-sized copper-based catalysts inspired by the indirect coordination and heteroatom regulation technique.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction by metal-nitrogen-doped carbon (MNC) catalysts is a promising and efficient method to mitigate global warming by converting CO2 molecules to value-added chemicals. In this research, we systematically studied the behaviours of single and dual-atom Cu catalysts during CO2 electroreduction process using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Structure CuNC-4-pyridine and CuCuNC-4a were found to be beneficial for C2 chemicals generation with relatively high stabilities. Subsequently, we explored the detailed pathways of key products (CO, HCOOH, CH3OH, CH4, C2H6O, C2H4 and C2H6) during CO2 electroreduction on CuNC-4-pyridine and CuCuNC-4a. This research reveals the mechanisms of key products formation during CO2 electroreduction on CuNC-4-pyridine and CuCuNC-4a, which would provide important insights to guide the design of MNC catalysts with low limiting potentials and high products selectivity.

Abstract:AbstractThe design of active, selective, and stable CO2 reduction electrocatalysts is still challenging. A series of atomically dispersed Co catalysts with different nitrogen coordination numbers were prepared and their CO2 electroreduction catalytic performance was explored. The best catalyst, atomically dispersed Co with two‐coordinate nitrogen atoms, achieves both high selectivity and superior activity with 94 % CO formation Faradaic efficiency and a current density of 18.1 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 520 mV. The CO formation turnover frequency reaches a record value of 18 200 h−1, surpassing most reported metal‐based catalysts under comparable conditions. Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that lower a coordination number facilitates activation of CO2 to the CO2.− intermediate and hence enhances CO2 electroreduction activity.

Abstract:Abstract The activity and selectivity for CO 2 /CO reduction over Cu electrodes is strongly dependent on the local surface structure of the catalyst and the pH of the electrolyte. Here we investigate a unique, Cu nanocube surface (CuCube) as a CO reduction electrode under neutral and basic pH by using online electrochemical mass spectroscopy (OLEMS) to determine the onset potentials and relative intensities of methane and ethylene production. To relate the unique selectivity to the surface structure, the CuCube surface reactivity is compared to polycrystalline Cu and three single crystals under the same reaction conditions. We find that the high selectivity for ethylene over the CuCube surface is most comparable to the Cu(1 0 0) surface, which has a cubic unit cell. However, the suppression of methane production over CuCube is unique to that particular surface. A basic pH is shown to enhance ethylene selectivity on all surfaces, and again the CuCube surface is unique.

Abstract:The relationship between strain and reaction selectivity of CO reduction reaction on the deformation of Cu(111) and Cu(100) electrode surface have been studied by using the density functional theory calculation, *CHO and CO coupling is the favorable pathway on expanded Cu(111) surface, two *CO coupling is the favorable pathway on contracted copper surface. CO is a key intermediate of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction, which determines the product species. Understanding the effect of metal electrode structure on the adsorption ability and reaction activity of CO is helpful for the design of high selective catalysts. Herein, the DFT calculations are used to investigate the relationship between lattice structure and reaction mechanism of CO, with copper electrode of various lattice constants used as catalysts. By analyzing the adsorption and reaction energies of CO at different lattice constants of Cu(111) and Cu(100) surfaces, we found that the CO adsorption ability is proportional to the increase in lattice, and *CO dimerization to *COCO is the main reaction pathway on Cu(100) surface. Furthermore, the forecasted possible reaction mechanism and products suggest that the coupling of *CO and *CHO to *COCHO and then to C2 products is the preferred pathway on Cu(111) surface for the lattice contraction. Alternatively, reduction of *CO to C1 products through *CHO intermediate is more beneficial for the normal and expanded lattice of Cu(111). This work offers an example of the geometrical influence factor on the CO adsorption ability and reaction activity, and helps to understanding the fundamental role of lattice expansion and contraction in catalysis.

Abstract:Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) or carbon monoxide (CO) toward C 2+ hydrocarbons such as ethylene, ethanol, acetate and propanol represents a promising approach toward carbon-negative electrosynthesis of chemicals. Fundamental understanding of the carbon─carbon (C-C) coupling mechanisms in these electrocatalytic processes is the key to the design and development of electrochemical systems at high energy and carbon conversion efficiencies. Here, we report the investigation of CO electreduction on single-atom copper (Cu) electrocatalysts. Atomically dispersed Cu is coordinated on a carbon nitride substrate to form high-density copper─nitrogen moieties. Chemisorption, electrocatalytic, and computational studies are combined to probe the catalytic mechanisms. Unlike the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism known for copper metal surfaces, the confinement of CO adsorption on the single-copper-atom sites enables an Eley-Rideal type of C-C coupling between adsorbed (*CO) and gaseous [CO(g)] carbon moxide molecules. The isolated Cu sites also selectively stabilize the key reaction intermediates determining the bifurcation of reaction pathways toward different C 2+ products.

Abstract:Cu-based materials are promising catalysts for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, they frequently have a low Faradaic efficiency (FE) and selectivity for a specific single product. Particularly, the precise construction of a Cu microenvironment is a great challenge in the design and fabrication of excellent Cu-based CO2RR catalysts. In order to systematically regulate the Cu metal site environment, the classic HKUST-1 containing paddle-wheel Cu coordination nodes was used as a template and modified with the atomic layer infiltration (ALI) technique in this work. A detailed structural analysis shows that a uniform distribution of Zn–O–Zn sites is introduced into HKUST-1 and linked to neighboring Cu nodes without changing the original morphology and structure. In comparison with pristine HKUST-1, the FE for CO increases from 20–30% to 70–80% for the ALI-modified HKUST-1 within the tested overpotential range. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations prove that the modification with Zn–O–Zn by ALI enhances the adsorption enthalpy of CO2 and strengthens the bonding interaction between the COOH* intermediate and the adsorption center, thereby reducing the whole reaction barrier and accelerating CO formation. The proposed ALI technique elucidates the reliance of CO2RR selectivity on the Cu microenvironment and provides a platform for regulating the coordination environments of Cu or other metal-based electrocatalysts to facilitate the high selectivity of CO2RR in the future.

Abstract:We elucidate the role of subsurface oxygen on the production of C2 products from CO2 reduction over Cu electrocatalysts using the newly developed grand canonical potential kinetics density functional theory method, which predicts that the rate of C2 production on pure Cu with no O is ∼500 times slower than H2 evolution. In contrast, starting with Cu2O, the rate of C2 production is >5,000 times faster than pure Cu(111) and comparable to H2 production. To validate these predictions experimentally, we combined time-dependent product detection with multiple characterization techniques to show that ethylene production decreases substantially with time and that a sufficiently prolonged reaction time (up to 20 h) leads only to H2 evolution with ethylene production ∼1,000 times slower, in agreement with theory. This result shows that maintaining substantial subsurface oxygen is essential for long-term C2 production with Cu catalysts.
