Abstract:Network architectures that can efficiently transport high quality, multicast video are rapidly becoming a basic requirement of emerging multimedia applications. The main problem complicating multicast video transport is variation in network bandwidth constraints. An attractive solution to this problem is to use an adaptive, multi-layered video encoding mechanism. In this paper, we consider two such mechanisms for the support of video multicast; one is a rate-based mechanism that relies on explicit rate congestion feedback from the network, and the other is a credit-based mechanism that relies on hop-by-hop congestion feedback. The responsiveness, bandwidth utilization, scalability and fairness of the two mechanisms are evaluated through simulations. Results suggest that while the two mechanisms exhibit performance trade-offs, both are capable of providing a high quality video service in the presence of varying bandwidth constraints.

Abstract:In this paper, a receiver-buffer-driven system is proposed for adaptive video multicast. The proposed system adapts an adaptive transmission scheme which is based on control theory. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. This system can be used for different congestion control algorithms and source encoding techniques. At the same time, the proposed system realizes adaptive video transmission under various Internet conditions.

Abstract:Scalable video coding is a promising technique to enable flexible video transmission for heterogeneous terminals and varying channel throughput. However, it is challenging to perform in-network adaptation in conventional networks because the network nodes are uncontrollable and transparent for media streaming applications. Software-defined networking (SDN) is an attractive network technology that supports the applications to collaborate with network nodes to achieve intelligent and dynamic service provisioning. Against this changing network landscape, we redesign the scalable multimedia multicast streaming by exploiting the complete network knowledge of the SDN controller to enable intelligent scalable video transmission. The proposed scalable multimedia multicast streaming framework is capable of in-network identifying, processing, and manipulating the media streams. In order to achieve the in-network adaptation, we apply equivalent bandwidth theory to estimate the affordable video layers that a link may accommodate, and apply finite-state machine to implement adaptive enhancement layer switching for multicast paths. In contrast to IP multicast, the proposed method is a controllable multicast scheme, which provides admission control in a multicast context, in-network adaptation, and supporting heterogeneous devices having different display capability. We further implement a prototype for illustrating the success of the proposed solution. The experimental results are also presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed equivalent bandwidth based adaptive enhancement layer switching algorithm.

Abstract:Video multicast is a challenging problem due to the heterogeneous and best-effort nature of the Internet. In this paper, we present a novel video multicast framework that exploits the potential of object scalability offered by MPEG-4. Specifically, we introduce the concept of object transmission proxy (OTP), which filters incoming streams using object-based bandwidth adaptation to meet dynamic network conditions. Multiple OPTs can form an overlay network that interconnects diverse multicast islands with semi-uniform demands within each single island. We concur with the wisdom that an application best knows the utility of its data. Hence, the bandwidth-adaptation algorithm for the OTPs adaptively allocates bandwidth among video objects according to their respective utilities and then performs application-level filtering based on an effective stream classification and packetization scheme. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our framework has substantial performance improvement over conventional bandwidth-adaptation schemes. It is particularly suitable for object-based video multicasting where the objects are of different importance.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of wireless networks and great success of Internet video, wireless video services are expected to be widely deployed in the near future. As different types of wireless networks are converging into all IP networks, i.e., the Internet, it is important to study video delivery over the wireless Internet. This paper proposes a novel end-system based adaptation protocol called Wireless Hybrid Adaptation Layered Multicast (WHALM) protocol for layered video multicast over wireless Internet. In WHALM the sender dynamically collects bandwidth distribution from the receivers and uses an optimal layer rate allocation mechanism to reduce the mismatches between the coarse-grained layer subscription levels and the heterogeneous and dynamic rate requirements from the receivers, thus maximizing the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers in a multicast session. Based on sampling theory and theory of probability, we reduce the required number of bandwidth feedbacks to a reasonable degree and use a scalable feedback mechanism to control the feedback process practically. WHALM is also tuned to perform well in wireless networks by integrating an end-to-end loss differentiation algorithm (LDA) to differentiate error losses from congestion losses at the receiver side. With a series of simulation experiments over NS platform, WHALM has been proved to be able to greatly improve the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers while avoiding congestion collapse on the wireless Internet.
A Scalable Bit-Stream Packetization and Adaptive Rate Control Framework for Object-Based Video Multicast

Abstract:Layered and agent-based transmission schemes have been recommended as the solutions to the inherent heterogeneity problem of video multicast over the Internet. Such schemes either require the integration of a scalable codec and a layered transport protocol, or involve computationally intensive transcoding at the application level. In addition, how to support user interactions for object-based video applications (e.g. MPEG-4) has seldom been considered. To address these problems, we present a novel framework specifically designed for object-based video multicast. First, we propose a novel bit-stream re-organization and packetization scheme by taking: advantage of the error resilience and concealment features in the MPEG-4 object-based codec. Second, we introduce the concept of a Video Transmission Agent (VTA) that eliminates the need for application level transcoding and works well with network-level rate control algorithm. We demonstrate that the combination of such approaches not only enables adaptive rate control more efficiently but also significantly reduces system complexity

Abstract:Application Layer Multicast (ALM) can greatly reduce the load of a server by leveraging the outgoing bandwidth of the participating nodes. However, most proposed ALM schemes become quite complicated and lose bandwidth efficiency if they try to deal with networks that are significantly heterogeneous or time-varying. In earlier work, we proposed MutualCast, an ALM scheme with fully connected mesh that quickly adapts to the time-varying networks, while achieving provably optimal throughput performance. In this paper, we study how MutualCast can be paired with adaptive rate control for streaming media. Specifically, we combine Optimal Rate Control (ORC), our earlier control-theoretical framework for quality adaptation, with the MutualCast delivery scheme. Using multiple bit rate video content, we show that the proposed system can gracefully adjust the common quality received at all the nodes while maintaining a continuous streaming experience at each, even when the network undergoes severe, uncorrelated bandwidth fluctuations at different peer nodes.

In this paper, we analyze the difficulties in streaming media multicast design, survey technologies that have been proposed for it. We also discuss several congestion control and error control mechanisms. Finally we present some remained issues for further research.

Abstract:To support video streaming over the current Internet, a media server usually needs to perform adaptive streaming in combination with congestion control. While existing streaming schemes are mainly designed for particular congestion algorithms and rate shaping techniques, this paper proposes a general buffer-driven adaptive streaming scheme based on control theory. Our scheme can be applied in combination with different congestion control algorithms and different rate shaping (and source coding) techniques. It is also amenable to analysis and easy to implement. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme gives satisfactory video quality under various Internet conditions while fully utilizing the available network bandwidth.

Abstract:Currently Internet does not offer any quality of service guarantees to multimedia applications.The difficulties of Internet video multicast are analyzed,and then a network-adaptive video multicast rate control approach based on buffer management is given,which can suit for the change of network traffic and satisfy the requirement of video streaming decoder by controlling sending rate logically.The test results show that it can reduce packet loss ratio and has good practical value.

Abstract:The key challenges in live video multicasting include how to properly form multicast groups, select video versions and allocate wireless resources, in order to guarantee the quality of experience (QoE) while ensuring low latency delivery. To address these challenges, in this paper, a novel multicast framework that leverages the advantages of network-assisted dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP and cloud radio access networks is proposed, where a multicast assistant server is deployed at the edge of a mobile network. Under this architecture, a joint user grouping, version selection, and bandwidth allocation method is designed to optimize the sum of users' utilities. In particular, a two-step scheme is proposed to solve this complex problem. The number of multicast groups is first automatically determined and a user clustering method is presented. Then, group-level version selection and spectrum assignment algorithms are performed at different time scales. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can improve at least 7% QoE compared to baseline methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new user-aware adaptive object-based video transmission approach to heterogeneous users over the next generation Internet. Firstly, we describe a new transport framework for complex multimedia applications over the next generation Internet, which provides differentiation functionality within one IP session as well as among different IP sessions. It includes application-aware intelligent resource control at the edge of the network, fast transcoding and signaling in the network. Secondly, we propose a new bitstream classification, prioritization and packetization scheme in which different types of data such as shape, motion and texture are reassembled, assigned to different priority classes, and packetized separately based on their priorities. Thirdly, we present a simple but effective mechanism of object-based dynamic rate control and adaptation by selectively dropping packets in conjunction with differentiated services (Diffserv) to minimize the end-to-end quality distortion. Finally, we perform the queuing analysis for our mechanism and explore how to extend our approach to the multicast case. Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Nowadays, many solutions have been provided to reduce the bandwidth usage of living streaming in the wired part of the Internet, like CDN, P2P, etc. However, it is often overlooked that the capacity of wireless network is inherently limited due to the restriction of wireless spectrum resources. Wireless multicast is a native way to reduce wireless bandwidth usage for living streaming, but it is difficult to deploy due to several problems, like low link data rate, absence of retransmission and lackof multicast support on the Internet. This paper proposes Wi-Live an adaptive wireless multicast solution based on SDN. With the global perspective of SDN, Wi-Live detects potential wireless multicast scenarios where multiple users who associate with the same AP are watching the same live video simultaneously. Then multicast service is adaptively initialized according to the scenarios by Wi-Live. Users watching the same live video are assigned to the same multicast group. A unicast-to-multicast conversion is deployed to generate multicast live video streams. To overcome the shortcoming of traditional wire less multicast, Wi-Live accomplishes a rate adaption scheme to support high rate wireless multicast and adopts FEC for recovery of lost packets. Then we conduct a measurement study based on the real data collected from the campus IPTV platform and the campus wireless network of Tsinghua University. The results indicate that potential wireless multicast scenarios account for a considerable proportion during live video traffic bursts and that high rate multicast is feasible in the campus wireless network. Next, a theoretical analysis on the performance improvement and the overhead of the proposed mechanism is carried out based on the real data as well.

Abstract:Dynamic adaptive streaming has emerged as a popular approach for video services in today's Internet. To date, the two important components in dynamic adaptive streaming, video transcoding that generates the adaptive bitrates of a video and video delivery that streams the videos to users, have been separately studied, resulting in a huge waste of computation and storage resource due to producing and caching different versions of videos regardless of their demands. We conduct extensive measurement studies of video sharing systems, including an IPTV service which streams regular, professionally made videos and an instant video clip sharing service which provides extremely short user-generated videos, as well as the availability of computation resource in conventional content delivery networks (CDNs). Based on the measurement insights, we propose an online joint transcoding and delivery approach for adaptive video streaming. We formulate optimization problems to enable high streaming quality for the users, and low computation and replication costs for the system. In particular, our strategy connects video transcoding and video delivery based on users' preferences of CDN regions and regional preferences of video versions. We analyze hardness of these problems and design distributed solutions. Extensive trace-driven experiments further demonstrate the superiority of our design.

Abstract:An approach based on adaptive congestion control and adaptive error recovery with RS (Reed-Solomon) coding method is presented for efficient video transmission over the Internet. Featured by weighted moving average rate control and TCP-friendliness, AVSP, a novel adaptive video streaming protocol, is designed with adjustable rate control parameters so as to respond quickly to the QoS status fluctuation during video transmission over the Internet. Combined with congestion control policy, an adaptive RS coding error recovery scheme with variable parameters is presented to enhance the robustness of MPEG video transmission over the Internet with restriction to the total system bandwidth.

Abstract:Real-time video streaming over wireless links imposes strong demands on video codecs and quality of networks. Many measures are made to design proper routing protocols and channel assignments (CAs) for multi-channel multi-interface (MCMI) wireless networks, since it can provide higher performance than single channel. However, there still has not been a well-studied proposal to guarantee real-time video quality in this situation. Hence, it motivates us to explore the potential synergies of exchanging information between different layers to support real-time video streaming over MCMI wireless networks. In this article we jointly consider three layers of the protocol stack: the application, data link and physical layers, and propose an adaptive cross-layer mechanism for real-time video streaming (ACMRV) used in this scenario, which includes both an efficient CA and an adaptive FEC mechanism. We analyze the performance of the proposed architecture and extensively evaluate it via NS-2. The results show that the real-time video quality can be greatly improved by our proposal.
