Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. Abstract:An efficient electrocatalyst is indispensable to significantly reduce energy consumption and accelerate the conversion efficiency of water splitting. In this work, the honeycomb-like porous MoCo alloy on nitrogen-doped three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene substrate (Mo0.3Co0.7@NPG) has been synthesized from the annealing of layered double hydroxide (MoCo-LDH@NPG). Especially, the Mo0.3Co0.7@NPG exhibits low hydrogen evolution overpotential of 75 mV (10 mA.cm(-2)) and a Tafel slope of 69.9 mV.dec(-1), which can be attributed to highly conductive NPG substrate, the unique nanostructure and the synergistic effect of Mo and Co. Moreover, the Mo0.3Co0.7@NPG can maintain the original morphology and high catalytic activity after 50-h stability test. This work proposes a general strategy to synthesize a multi-element alloy on conductive substrates with high porosity for electrocatalytic reaction.

Abstract:Nanoflower‐like carbon‐encapsulated CoNiPt catalyst with composition segregation (CoNi‐rich and Pt‐rich) is obtained by pyrolyzing MOF precursors. These segregation alloy components synergically promote the kinetic activity of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work provides novel insights into the design of efficient and low‐cost alkaline HER catalyst derived from metal–organic frameworks by coordinating kinetic reaction sites at segregation alloy and adopting the appropriate drying process. Constructing an efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst with low platinum (Pt) consumption is crucial for the cost reduction of energy devices, such as electrolyzers. Herein, nanoflower‐like carbon‐encapsulated CoNiPt alloy catalysts with composition segregation are designed by pyrolyzing morphology‐controlled and Pt‐proportion‐tuned metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The optimized catalyst containing 15% CoNiPt NFs (15%: Pt mass percentage, NFs: nanoflowers) exhibits outstanding alkaline HER performance with a low overpotential of 25 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, far outperforming those of commercial Pt/C (47 mV) and the most advanced catalysts. Such superior activity originates from an integration of segregation alloy and Co‐O hybridization. The nanoflower‐like hierarchical structure guarantees the full exposure of segregation alloy sites. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the segregation alloy components not only promote water dissociation but also facilitate the hydrogen adsorption process, synergistically accelerating the kinetics of alkaline HER. In addition, the activity of alkaline HER is volcanically distributed with the surface oxygen content, mainly in the form of Co3dO2p hybridization, which is another reason for enhanced activity. This work provides feasible insights into the design of cost‐effective alkaline HER catalysts by coordinating kinetic reaction sites at segregation alloy and adjusting the appropriate oxygen content.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is an environmentally friendly technology for producing hydrogen energy. Recent studies have shown that high entropy alloys (HEAs) and N-doped graphene layers coated alloys have superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance compared to traditional alloys. This paper presents a simple method for synthesizing N-doped graphene layers coated HEAs with controllable thickness. NiFeCo-based alloy materials are prepared using this method and used as HER catalysts in alkaline conditions. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the CuNiFeCoCrTi@N-doped graphene nanoparticles (CuNiFeCoCrTi@NC NPs) with a graphene shell of 2–3 layers exhibit the best hydrogen evolution performance. The improvement of hydrogen evolution performance should be related to the unique properties of HEAs and coating the surface of alloys with thin graphene shell. This study presents a simple and efficient method for synthesizing HEA@NC NPs, which can be used as an efficient electrocatalyst in alkaline water splitting systems.

Abstract:Developing robust and efficient electrocatalysts to boost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution is a crucial issue for H 2 energy. One of the effective strategies is to fabricate excellent electrocatalysts by embedding carbon shell-encapsulated transition metals or alloys in metal oxides through metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursor. Herein, three multiphase composite HER catalysts (NF/CoNiMo-500, 600, 700) are exploited by using NF/CoNi-MOF-74 as template. Specially, the NF/CoNiMo-500 shows optimal HER activity, which is constructed by nesting graphitized carbon wrapped Co 3 Mo alloy and metallic Ni nanoparticles into amorphous CoNiMo-oxide (CoNiMo-O) nanosheets. It requires the lowest overpotential of 34 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , demonstrating the smallest Tafel slope of 58 mV/dec and the best stability. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the high intrinsic activity of Co 3 Mo alloy and metallic Ni contributes significantly to the optimal electrocatalytic performance of CoNiMo-500. This work opens up a new orientation to synthesize microscale MOF-74 arrays and develop efficient HER electrocatalysts by combining carbon shell-encapsulated metals and alloys with oxides.

Abstract:Mo2C nanoparticles are embedded into graphite nanosheet (GNS) matrix via a simple carburization process. The structures of the as-prepared Mo2C/GNS hybrid are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, thermogravimetric analyses, and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm. Structural characterization results reveal strong coupling interaction of the Mo2C and carbon support. The resulting Mo2C/GNS is examined as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions. Electrochemical results indicate that the Mo2C/GNS possesses outstanding activity as well as durability. At a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), overpotentials are determined to be 136, 82 and 73 mV in neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received a lot of attention due to its promising advantages in producing "green hydrogen" via electrocatalysis with low cost and high efficiency. Until now, developing transition metal-based electrocatalysts for HER is still a great challenge. In this regard, we reported a facile strategy to fabricate Co/Ni species encapsulated by carbon structure (CoNi@C) through annealing two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. The CoNi@C that was prepared under 600 °C achieved the highest catalytic performance in 1 M KOH electrolyte with an overpotential of 330 mV to acquire 100 mA cm-2. In addition, the effect of KOH concentrations on the HER performance of CoNi@C-600 was explored. In 3 M KOH electrolyte, the current density of 100 mA cm-2 has been attained at a bias potential of 80 mV. The alkaline environment can improve the electrocatalytic performance and further improve the stability of the as-prepared catalysts. This work would endow promising opportunities for the manipulation of MOF-based structures through pyrolysis to fabricate highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of durable and efficient transition alloy electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is pivotal for various applications in water electrolysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are commonly subjected to pyrolysis to produce efficient alloy@carbon electrocatalysts. In this study, leveraging the respective advantages of two MOFs, the bimetallic CoNi embedded in carbon/ nitrogen-doped carbon (CoNi@CNC) arrays have been in-situ synthesized as HER electrocatalysts through annealing a MOF-on-MOF core-shell precursor assembled from MOF-74 and ZIF-67. The MOF-74 derivative has a uniform structure and large porosity except poor conductivity, while ZIF-67 derivative is highly conductive but structurally unstable. As a result, the CoNi@CNC hybrid electrode exhibits a low overpotential of 83 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in alkaline solution, as well as good durability at elevated current densities. It is found that the nitrogendoped carbon shell can modulate the electronic structure of alloy and increase its charge transfer ability, leading to improved electrocatalytic performance. The pure carbon inside maintains the columnar array structure of CoNi, improving the stability of catalyst. This strategy presents a novel approach for synthesizing promising HER electrocatalysts from MOFs for energy conversion technologies.
Hierarchical Ni3S2@2D Co MOF Nanosheets As Efficient Hetero-Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Solution

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution poses a challenge for current research. Herein, a novel hierarchical hetero-electrocatalyst of Ni3S2@2D Co MOF was synthesized with cobalt metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) crystallization on carbon paper (CP) and in-situ electrodeposition of Ni3S2 nanosheets. The catalyst Ni3S2@2D Co-MOF/CP exhibited an excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with a low overpotential of 140 mV and a small Tafel slope of 90.3 mV dec-1 at a current density of -10 mA cm-2. This catalyst demonstrated a lower overpotential (395 mV) than commercial Pt/C catalyst at a high current density (>130 mA cm-2). The efficient and stable HER performance of Ni3S2@2D Co-MOF/CP was attributed to nickel sulfide honeycomb nanosheets grown on two-dimensional MOF frameworks, which were conducive to charge transfer and hydrogen evolution. The electron-rich nickel sulfide surface significantly diminished H* adsorption and reduced energy barrier of H2 generation to promote HER process. This work provides a new strategy for practical preparation of efficient and stable transition metal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Molybdenum phosphide (MoP) is recognized as one of the most promising catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet the low electronic conductivity and complicated synthesis process still restrict the commercialization process of its replacement for the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Herein, a kind of novel MoP nanoparticles encapsulated with biomolecule-derived N, P-codoped carbon nanosheets has been successfully fabricated by a simple one-step pyrolysis of ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate, 1-hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and a unique biomolecule guanine as the precursor of two-dimensional carbon materials. Benefiting from the well-designed architecture of both good electronic conductivity and easily accessible catalytic sites provided by 2D carbon structure, the optimized catalyst thus exhibits synergistically enhanced HER activity in both alkaline and acidic conditions, especially with a low overpotential of 104 mV to deliver 10 mA/cm2 in 1M KOH. Moreover, the coverage of N, P-codoped graphene-like carbon layers can prevent the MoP nanoparticles from corrosion under harsh reaction media to achieve superior durability. This work has opened up a new direction for further development of simple, low-cost but efficient novel electrocatalysts.

Abstract:It is widely acknowledged that interface engineering strategies can significantly enhance the activity of catalysts. In this study, we developed a CoMoP nanoarray directly grown in situ on a nickel foam (NF) substrate, with the interface structure formed through the electrodeposition of MnO x H y . The resulting heterostructure MnO x H y /CoMoP/NF exhibited remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, achieving overpotentials as low as 61 and 138 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm -2 , respectively. Moreover, MnO x H y /CoMoP/NF demonstrated efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with an overpotential of 330 mV at 100 mA cm -2 . Remarkably, MnO x H y /CoMoP/NF maintained the stability of catalytic properties and structural integrity by working continuously for 20 h for HER at 10 mA cm -2 and OER at 100 mA cm -2 , respectively. The Tafel slopes of HER and OER were determined to be as small as 14 and 55 mV dec -1 , respectively, confirming that the coupled interface confered fast reaction kinetics to the catalyst. When applied in overall water splitting, MnO x H y /CoMoP/NF delivered a voltage of 1.91 V at 100 mA cm -2 with excellent stability. This study demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing a simple electrodeposition technique to fabricate a heterogeneous structure with bifunctional catalytic activity, establishing a solid foundation for diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:Fabricating a cost effective hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst without using precious metal elements is in crucial demand for environmentally-benign energy production. In this work, the thin and edge-rich molybdenum disulfide nanosheets, with carbon doped in the interlayers and decorated on graphene, were developed by a facile solvothermal process. The as-synthesized nanohybrids exhibited high catalytic ability for the hydrogen evolution electrochemical reaction with an onset overpotential of 0.165 mV and a Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1). Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrids also showed better durability and stability. Our work may lead to a potential method for in situ production of metal carbide-sulphur hybrid nanomaterials with promising applications for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Hydrogen has garnered considerable attention as a promising energy source for addressing contemporary environmental degradation and energy scarcity challenges. Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production has emerged as an environmentally friendly and versatile method, offering high purity. However, the development of cost-effective electrocatalytic catalysts using abundant and inexpensive materials is crucial. In this study, we successfully synthesized nitrogen-doped Co6Mo6C supported on nitrogen-doped graphene (N-Co6Mo6C/NC). The catalyst exhibited high performance and durability in alkaline electrolytes (1.0 M KOH) for hydrogen evolution, showcasing an overpotential of 185 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec-1. These findings present a novel avenue for the fabrication of efficient bimetallic carbide catalysts.

Abstract:FeNi@NG/NCM@MoS2 hybrid is prepared, using a simple hydrothermal method. The synthesized composite is stable with improved catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. Besides, density functional theory calculations validate this enhanced catalytic HER performance of the catalyst and envisage that it is due to electron transformation, from FeNi alloy to NG surface of FeNi@NG particle, and then to MoS2 nanosheets. Synthesis of noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production is crucial to overcoming the energy demand of modern society. One of the most competitive and alternative noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)‐based composites. Herein, it is shown that MoS2 nanosheets grow on FeNi@N‐doped graphene nanoparticles/N‐doped carbon matrix (FeNi@NG/NCM@MoS2), using the hydrothermal method. FeNi@NG/NCM@MoS2 hybrid displays outstanding HER performance with a low overpotential of 79 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 40.2 mV dec−1, and high durability. First‐principles density functional theory simulations confirm the electron transformation from FeNi alloy to NG surface of FeNi@NG particle and subsequently further transfer to MoS2 nanosheets, which decrease the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH* ≈ −0.08 eV) and local work function for enhanced HER activities. This work highlights the understanding of electron transfer in demonstrating the kinetic reaction of the HER process and offers a new avenue for constructing efficient MoS2‐based electrocatalysts.
