Abstract:Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) are deployed as the equipment for deep sea exploration due to its long endurance and mobility. However, there are still some aspects needed to be studied, especially related to the reliable power supply that ensure the continuous operation of UUVs. In this paper, a novel metal fuelled steam Rankine cycle utilising the high-energy density Li and SF6, is proposed as an alternative power cycle to attain an output power of about 5 kW. The meanline method is currently used to design the partial admission axial turbine. The thermodynamic model is conducted and tested under specific working conditions of underwater environment, while the reactor efficiency is not considered in this model. The experimental facility is then implemented and the operation of the power cycle was carried out. The experiment confirms on the suitability of this novel power cycle for UUVs as well as the meanline turbine design method. A maximum system efficiency of 5.47% is attained experimentally. However it can be further improved by minimising pressure and heat losses through the pipes. In addition, parametric studies on the influence of different operating conditions on the system performance are performed. The current work provides an insight about the potential of applying metal fuelled steam Rankine cycles at underwater environment.
