Abstract:Considering the large amount of carbon monoxide produced by human activities causing serious problems to the environment, it can be seen that the low-temperature catalytic combustion of CO is a desirable route for CO removal. Herein, we reported an efficient and stable copper-manganese catalyst (CuMnOx-MR) based on a mechanochemical redox process. Interestingly, more oxygen vacancies and lattice defects emerged in CuMnOx-MR due to the molecular-scale redox reaction between Cu+ and MnO4-. Meanwhile, the mechanochemical redox process was completed by solvent-free and rapid (1 h) ball milling. Moreover, the ball milling could continually break CuMnOx-MR particles to generate a high degree of interstitial porosity (up to 59 m(2) g(-1)). Compared with the control samples, CuMnOx-MR exhibited a lower catalytic temperature (T-90 = 140 degrees C) in the CO oxidation reaction and performed well in the stability test (150 degrees C, 100 h). Finally, the CuMnOx-MR showed good resistance to H2O (4.2 vol% moisture, 100 h) and SO2 (100 ppm), which suggests its potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Transition metal-doped CeO2 (MCeOx) is of great importance in industrial catalysis. However, current synthetic methods often result in the separation of MOx phases, which significantly decreases their catalytic activity. Toward this end, the chemistry of mechanochemical redox was introduced to prepare Ce1-xMnxO2-delta catalyst. The redox behavior between MnO4- and Ce3+ could in situ produces atomically dispersed Ce1-xMnxO2-delta solid solution without calcination. Moreover, the mechanochemical synthesis endows Ce1-xMnxO2-delta a surface area (302 m(2)/g) that is much higher than the counterparts prepared by traditional methods, such as co-precipitation method (66 m(2)/g) CTAB-assisted precipitation method (122 m(2)/g) and sol-gel method (136 m(2)/g). Importantly, the well dispersed heteroatoms and high porosity afford doped ceria excellent activity and stability during CO oxidation. The reaction mechanism was finally explored by DFT calculation, which reveals that Mn and Cu dopants facilitate electron transfer and oxygen releasing.

Abstract:A mechanochemical redox reaction between KMnO4 and CoCl2 was developed to obtain a Co x Mn1–x O y catalyst with a specific surface area of 479 m2 g−1, which was higher than that obtained using a co-precipitation (CP) method (34 m2 g−1), sol-gel (SG) method (72 m2 g−1), or solution redox process (131 m2 g−1). During catalytic combustion, this Co x Mn1–x O y catalyst exhibited better activity (T100 for propylene = ~200 °C) than the control catalysts obtained using the SG (325 °C) or CP (450 °C) methods. The mechanical action, mainly in the form of kinetic energy and frictional heating, may generate a high degree of interstitial porosity, while the redox reaction could contribute to good dispersion of cobalt and manganese species. Moreover, the as-prepared Co x Mn1–x O y catalyst worked well in the presence of water vapor (H2O 4.2%, >60 h) or SO2 (100 ppm) and at high temperature (400 °C, > 60 h). The structure MnO2·(CoOOH)2.93 was suggested for the current Co x Mn1–x O y catalyst. This catalyst could be extended to the total oxidation of other typical hydrocarbons (T 90 = 150 °C for ethanol, T 90 = 225 °C for acetone, T 90 = 250 °C for toluene, T 90 = 120 °C for CO, and T 90 = 540 °C for CH4). Scale-up of the synthesis of Co x Mn1–x O y catalyst (1 kg) can be achieved via ball milling, which may provide a potential strategy for real world catalysis.

Mechanochemical Redox Synthesis of Interstitial Mesoporous CoxFe1‐xOy Catalyst for CO2 Hydrogenation

Abstract:The study on CoOx-FeOx catalysts gives a profound insight into the synthesis and the application of multitransition metal oxide catalysts. A facile and solid-state mechanochemical redox strategy was developed to obtain CoxFe1-xOy from CoCl2 center dot 6H(2)O and KMnO4 with simply two-round of ball milling (BM) operation. The process was witnessed by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization, confirming the contribution of the mechanical force and frictional heating in the occurrence of redox reaction, the dispersion of metal species, and the generation of interstitial pores. Importantly, as-made CoxFe1-xOy-BM sample possessed abundant porosity, and the specific surface area of it (131 m(2) g(-1)) was much higher than that of coprecipitation route (49 m(2) g(-1)) and sol-gel route (33 m(2) g(-1)). The as-prepared catalysts CoxFe1-xOy-BM exhibited excellent performance in reverse water gas shift reaction, reaching 43% of CO2 conversion rate at 500 degrees C with high selectivity (over 80%) during the whole temperature range, while the conversion for both control samples were below 20%. Moreover, continuous 120 hr CO2 hydrogenation at 500 degrees C presented the enhancement of thermal stability and the possible change of active sites. Synchrotron Radiation in Situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and in Situ X-ray Diffraction Analysis of a High-Performance Cobalt Catalyst Towards the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.
CO Oxidation over MOx (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) Supported on SmMn2O5 Composite Catalysts

Abstract:The ability to oxidize CO at relatively low temperature is barely satisfactory for pure SmMn2O5 (SMO) catalysts. While loading precious metals like platinum nanoclusters on mullite SMO is an effective approach to enhance its catalytic performance, the high cost of noble metals has limited its large scale application. In this work, we systematically study an alternative approach to composite catalyst formation by loading non-precious metal oxides MOx (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) onto SMO mullite for CO oxidation. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses show that composite catalysts are successfully formed by loading MOx nanoparticles at a content of approximate to 0.75 wt% through the deposition precipitation (DP) method. Except for FeOx, MOx loaded samples in general exhibit much higher reaction rates of CO oxidation than bare SMO especially at the temperature range below 100 degrees C. The promoted activity for MOx/SMO composites can be attributed to the improved reducibility of adsorbed oxygen (O-ads) and the increased oxidation state of Mn cations at the interface. Such behavior accelerates the decomposition of carbonates, as indicated by the H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy results. We demonstrate that the best catalytic performance of the CuOx/SMO composite also stems from the additional CO adsorption on the CuOx sites. The work presented herein provides a method to enhance the CO oxidation performance of SMO and helps in understanding the oxidation reaction mechanism involving mullites with loaded transition metal oxides (TMOs).

Dynamic Active Sites over Binary Oxide Catalysts: in Situ/operando Spectroscopic Study of Low-Temperature CO Oxidation over MnOx-CeO2 Catalysts

Abstract:The determination of the dynamic active sites over binary oxide catalysts is of great challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, the origin of active sites toward low-temperature CO oxidation (<200 degrees C) were thoroughly studied using MnOx-CeO2 composite oxide catalysts with different Mn/Ce molar ratios, synthesized by a redox co-precipitation method. The optimum Mn1Ce1 catalyst (T-100 = 190 degrees C), which showed excellent activity, has found to be composed of three phases: (1) CeO2; (2) amorphous MnOx (3) MnOx-CeO2 solid solution (active sites). With the combination of kinetics and characterization results, including Temperature-Programmed-Desorption/Reduction (TPD/TPR), operando Raman spectroscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS), the dynamic structures of catalysts were rationalized with the identification of the interface of MnOx and CeO2. The mechanism for CO oxidation over MnOx-CeO2 in the temperature range 100-190 degrees C were proposed that the direct and the formate routes were followed at T < 130 degrees C, and the carbonate route became dominant at T > 130 degrees C. Notably, the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism was proceeded in the whole temperature range. We speculate that cheap binary oxides will substitute for noble metal as catalysts for the removal of CO and other toxic gases, especially operating under mild conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A low-concentration cobalt (similar to 6 at%) and manganese (similar to 3 at%) bimetallic oxide catalyst supported on ceria nanorods (CoMnOx/CeO2), as well as its related single metal oxide counterparts (CoOx/CeO2 and MnOx/CeO2) was synthesized via a deposition-precipitation approach. The fresh samples after air-calcination at 400 C-omicron were tested under the reaction conditions of CO oxidation, and showed the following order of reactivity: CoMnOx/CeO2 > CoOx/CeO2 > MnOx/CeO2. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data identified that the structure of the CeO2 support was maintained during deposition of metal (Co, Mn) ions while the corresponding vis-Raman spectra verified that more oxygen vacancies were created after deposition-precipitation than those in pure ceria nanorods. Aberration-corrected, high-angle, annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images with the help of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analyses determined two types of cobalt species, i.e. ultra-fine clusters (< 2 nm) and smaller nanocrystals (up to 5 nm) in CoOx/CeO2 while only bigger nanostructures (similar to 10 nm) of cobalt-manganese oxides in CoMnOx/CeO2. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements demonstrated the presence of a cubic Co3O4 phase in all the cobalt-based catalysts. The fitting results of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) indicated that the introduction of the secondary metal (Mn) oxide significantly enhanced the two-dimensional growth of cobalt oxide nanostructures on the surface of CeO2. Therefore, the enhanced activity of CO oxidation reaction over the bimetallic cobalt-manganese oxide nanocatalyst can be attributed to the higher crystallinity of the Co3O4 phase in this work.

Abstract:As a critical alternative step for the synthesis of important chemical feedstocks and complex carbon-based fuels, the electrochemical transformation of CO2 into CO holds great significance for the chemical industry. Here, MnO2 nanosheets array supported nickel foam has been synthesized and adopted as a binder-free catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The well-distributed nanosheets of MnO2 impart a much higher density of accessible active sites for CO2RR, enabling the selective CO2 reduction to CO with a large current density (14.1 mA cm-2), excellent Faradaic efficiency (71%) and high electrochemical stability (10 h). This work first demonstrates the great potential of Mn-based oxides for electrocatalytic transformation of CO2 to valuable products.
Designing Highly Efficient Cu2O-CuO Heterojunction CO Oxidation Catalysts: the Roles of the Support Type and Cu2O-CuO Interface Effect

Abstract:In this work, a series of Cu2O/S (S = α-MnO2, CeO2, ZSM-5, and Fe2O3) supported catalysts with a Cu2O loading amount of 15% were prepared by the facile liquid-phase reduction deposition–precipitation strategy and investigated as CO oxidation catalysts. It was found that the Cu2O/α-MnO2 catalyst exhibits the best catalytic activity for CO oxidation. Additionally, a series of Cu2O-CuO/α-MnO2 heterojunctions with varied proportion of Cu+/Cu2+ were synthesized by further calcining the pristine Cu2O/α-MnO2 catalyst. The ratio of the Cu+/Cu2+ could be facilely regulated by controlling the calcination temperature. It is worth noting that the Cu2O-CuO/α-MnO2-260 catalyst displays the best catalytic performance. Moreover, the kinetic studies manifest that the apparent activation energy could be greatly reduced owing to the excellent redox property and the Cu2O-CuO interface effect. Therefore, the Cu2O-CuO heterojunction catalysts supported on α-MnO2 nanotubes are believed to be the potential catalyst candidates for CO oxidation with advanced performance.
Unveiling the Ce-Mn ion redox behavior at the interface of CeO2/YbMn2O5 for low-temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:A series of CeO2/YbMn2O5 composite catalysts with varying CeO2 ratios are successfully synthesized using a typical co-precipitation method. The aim was to investigate the catalytic performance for CO oxidation to well understand the structure-activity relationship. Among all these catalysts, we observed that the complete oxidation temperature of the 30%-CeO2/YbMn2O5 catalyst for CO can be significantly reduced to around 240 °C. The results of XPS, BET, O2-TPD, CO-TPR, CO2-TPD and a range of characterizations have indicated that the CeO2/YbMn2O5 catalyst facilitates the redox cycle (Ce3+ + Mn4+ ↔ Ce4+ + Mn3+) on the CeO2-YbMn2O5 interface. This, in turn, improves the efficiency of electron transfer, increases active reaction sites, and further promotes activation of reactant molecules. This study provides a foundation for the research of composite catalysts based on mullite-type transition metal oxides in the field of CO catalysis.

Enhancing CO catalytic oxidation performance over Cu-doping manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves catalyst

Abstract:The CO oxidation catalytic activity of catalysts is strongly influenced by the oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs) concentration and the valence state of active metal. Herein, a defect engineering approach was implemented to enhance the oxygen vacancy defects and to modify the valence of metal ions in manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2) by the introduction of copper (Cu). The characterization and theoretical calculation results reveal that the incorporation of Cu 2+ ion into the OMS-2 structure led to a rise in specific surface area and pore volume, weakening of Mn-O bonds, higher proportion of the low-coordinated oxygen species adsorbed in oxygen vacancies (O ads ) and an increase in the average oxidation state of manganese. These structural modifications were discovered to considerably reduce the apparent activation energy (Ea), thus ultimately significantly enhancing the CO oxidation activity (T 99 at 148 °Cat GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ) than the original OMS-2 (T 99 = 215 °C at GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ). Furthermore, In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) and In-situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in situ NAP-XPS) results indicate that the bimetallic synergy enhanced by doping strategy accelerates the conversion of oxygen to chemisorbed oxygen species and the reaction rate of CO oxidation through Mn 3+ +Cu 2+ ↔Mn 4+ +Cu + redox cycle. The findings of this study offer novel perspectives on the design of catalysts with exceptional performance in CO oxidation.

Abstract:Manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2) is a kind of excellent redox catalysts, a key challenge still remains to further increase their catalytic performance. Herein, we report a facile reduction method to enhance the catalytic activity of OMS-2 by producing more oxygen vacancy and creating an active interface between the main phase MnO2 and the minor phase Mn3O4. Compared to the pristine OMS-2, the OMS-2 catalyst reduced in a relatively short time exhibits superior performance for dimethyl ether combustion with a starting-off temperature of 163°C and a complete combustion temperature of 230°C. Such enhanced activity can be ascribed to the higher reducibility, the more oxygen vacancy, and the active heterogeneous interface. These findings open up a new way to design highly efficient catalysts, especially the metal oxides-based catalysts, for redox reactions.

Abstract:The preparation of highly loaded and dispersed nanoparticle-supported catalysts is challenging and practical in industry. Here we provide a simple yet efficient strategy for the preparation of supported metal (oxide) nanoparticles. Carbonaceous layers, derived from 2-methylimidazoles ligands, were utilized as sacrificial architecture. This strategy effectively reduced the mobility and sintering of nanoparticles during the post-oxidative calcination process. The resulting material has a high loading (30 wt % theoretical contents of cobalt oxides) and small nanoparticles (∼5 nm), even that was thermally annealed at high temperature (e.g. 500 and 700 °C). In contrast to the catalyst prepared by the traditional impregnation and calcination method, the synthesized catalyst exhibits superior performance at both low (carbon monoxide oxidation) and high (methane combustion) temperatures. The excellent catalytic performance should be attributed to the strong size-dependent effect and interaction between cobalt oxides and supports. This preparation strategy paves a new way for highly loaded and dispersed supported heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C) material with specifically coordinated configurations is a promising alternative to costly Pt-based catalysts. In the past few years, great progress is made in the studies of M–N–C materials, including the structure modulation and local coordination environment identification via advanced synthetic strategies and characterization techniques, which boost the electrocatalytic performances and deepen the understanding of the underlying fundamentals. In this review, the most recent advances of M–N–C catalysts with specifically coordinated configurations of M–Nx (x = 1–6) are summarized as comprehensively as possible, with an emphasis on the synthetic strategy, characterization techniques, and applications in typical electrocatalytic reactions of the oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, etc., along with mechanistic exploration by experiments and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the challenges and potential perspectives for the future development of M–N–C catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:The rapid development of renewable energy technologies such as water splitting, rechargeable metal-air batteries and fuel cells requires highly efficient electrocatalysts capable of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here we report a facile sonication-driven synthesis to deposit the molecular manganese vanadium oxide precursor [Mn4V4O17(OAc)3]3- on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Thermal conversion of this composite at 900 oC gives nanostructured manganese vanadium oxides / carbides which are stably linked to the MWCNTs. The resulting composites show excellent electrochemical reactivity for ORR and OER, and significant reactivity enhancements compared to the precursors and a Pt/C reference are reported. Notably, even under harsh acidic conditions, long-term OER activity at low overpotential is reported. In addition, we report exceptional activity of the composites for the industrially important Cl2 evolution from aqueous HCl electrolyte. The new composite material shows how molecular deposition routes leading to highly active and stable multi-functional electrocatalysts can be developed. The facile design could in principle be extended to multiple catalyst classes by tuning of the molecular metal oxide precursor employed.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is a transformative technology to reduce the carbon footprint of modern society. Single-site catalysts have been demonstrated as promising catalysts for CO2 RR, but general synthetic methods for catalysts with high surface area and tunable single-site metal composition still need to be developed to unambiguously investigate the structure-activity relationship crossing various metal sites. Here, a generalized coordination-condensation strategy is reported to prepare single-atom metal sites on ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) with high surface areas (average 800 m2 g-1 ). This method is applicable to a broad range of metal sites (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pt, Pd, Ru, and Rh) with loadings up to 4 wt.%. In particular, the CO2 RR to carbon monoxide (CO) Faradaic efficiency (FE) with Ni single-site OMC catalyst reaches 95%. This high FE is maintained even under large current density (>140 mA cm-2 ) and in a long-term study (14 h), which suits the urgently needed large-scale applications. Theoretical calculations suggest that the enhanced activity on single-atom Ni sites results from balanced binding energies between key intermediates, COOH and CO, for CO2 RR, as mediated by the coordination sphere.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.
