Abstract:Since room temperature management consumes a large amount of building energy, thermochromic smart windows have been extensively used for temperature regulation and energy management. However, the development of the smart window is still limited by its simple thermochromic performance, unreasonable thermochromic temperature, and the lack of additional stimulation conditions. In this work, a dual-responsive hydrogel was developed by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium chloride into the cross-linking network of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and polyacrylamide (PAM) for energy-saving and privacy protection. By controlling the temperature from low (<15 °C) to medium (15-28 °C) to high (>28 °C), the dual-responsive hydrogel achieved a reversible three-stage transition of opaque-transparent-translucent. The hydrogel exhibited a satisfactory solar modulation ability (Tlum = 80.3%, ΔTsol,15-18°C = 72.9%, ΔTsol,18-35°C = 42.7%) and effective IR and UV shielding at high (or low) temperatures. Moreover, compared with traditional windows, smart windows made of dual-responsive hydrogels could offer better thermal insulation and heat preservation. The electrochromic properties of the dual-responsive hydrogel presented a facile strategy to meet the needs of different situations. The dual-responsive hydrogel features energy-saving, privacy protection, three-stage optical modulation, and multistimulus responsiveness, making it an ideal smart window candidate.
Fabrication of novel MoOx / PVA hydrogel nanocomposite for photochromic smart window

Abstract:Photochromic smart windows allow for simple manufacturing without the need for additional energy input for adaptive control of sunlight, which will have a huge impact on the comfort of daylight and the development of smart windows. Among them, although molybdenum-based materials have advantages such as low cost and stable coloring, the lack of fast transmission switching capability and liquid phase color changing environment limit its implementation in the field of smart windows. Here, we report a low-cost method to fabricate a novel photochromic hydrogel (MoOx/PVA) by combining molybdenum oxide nanosheets (MoOx, 2 ≤ x ≤ 3) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel. Under ultraviolet light (UV = 360–400 nm) irradiation, the hydrogel achieves rapid color change visible to the naked eye within 10 s, with an exponential decrease in transmittance, reversible switching of transparency between 70 % and 5 %, and retains about 95 % transmittance after 14 cycles. Due to the good biocompatibility of molybdenum oxide, hydrogel can also be used for personal wearable, which can achieve 1.4 °C of cooling when exposed to sunlight for 3 min. Moreover, the photochromic and recovery properties of the large-sized (29.7 cm × 21 cm) MoOx/PVA hydrogel demonstrate its broad prospects for production applications in smart windows. It is believed that this study will open new opportunities for both fabrication and application in photochromic smart windows and intelligent devices.

Abstract:A novel thermochromic system for energy saving purpose was designed through employing aqueous solution of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), a thermosensitive polymer. The system consisted of a glass cell filled with aqueous solution of PNIPAM. The cell bottom was covered by black fabric. At low temperature, the solution was transparent giving the cell black color that absorbed light. When the temperature was raised to above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM, the solution became opaque. As a result the cell appeared white and reflected the light. The reflection ratio was determined by the concentration of aqueous solution of PNIPAM. When the concentration of PNIPAM reached 0.05 g/mL, a maximum reflection ratio of 33% was observed which led to a decrease of the cell temperature by 6.0 °C compared with the cell without PNIPAM inside. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows are optical devices that can regulate their optical properties actively in response to external temperature changes. Due to their simple structures and as they do not require other additional energy supply devices, they have great potential in building energy-saving. However, conventional thermochromic smart windows generally have problems with high response temperatures and low response rates. Owing to their great effect in photothermal conversion, photothermal materials are often used in smart windows to assist phase transition so that they can quickly achieve the dual regulation of light and heat at room temperature. Based on this, research progress on the phase transition of photothermal material-assisted thermochromic smart windows is summarized. In this paper, the phase transition mechanisms of several thermochromic materials (VO2, liquid crystals, and hydrogels) commonly used in the field of smart windows are introduced. Additionally, the applications of carbon-based nanomaterials, noble metal nanoparticles, and semiconductor (metal oxygen/sulfide) nanomaterials in thermochromic smart windows are summarized. The current challenges and solutions are further indicated and future research directions are also proposed.

Engineering Self-Adaptive Multi-Response Thermochromic Hydrogel for Energy-Saving Smart Windows and Wearable Temperature-Sensing

Abstract:Buildings account for ≈40% of the total energy consumption. In addition, it is challenging to control the indoor temperature in extreme weather. Therefore, energy-saving smart windows with light regulation have gained increasing attention. However, most emerging base materials for smart windows have disadvantages, including low transparency at low temperatures, ultra-high phase transition temperature, and scarce applications. Herein, a self-adaptive multi-response thermochromic hydrogel (PHC-Gel) with dual temperature and pH response is engineered through "one-pot" integration tactics. The PHC-Gel exhibits excellent mechanical, adhesion, and electrical conductivity properties. Notably, the low critical solubility temperature (LCST) of PHC-Gel can be regulated over a wide temperature range (20-35 °C). The outdoor practical testing reveals that PHC-Gel has excellent light transmittance at low temperatures and radiation cooling performances at high temperatures, indicating that PHC-Gel can be used for developing energy-saving windows. Actually, PHC-Gel-based thermochromic windows show remarkable visible light transparency (Tlum ≈ 95.2%) and solar modulation (△Tsol ≈ 57.2%). Interestingly, PHC-Gel has superior electrical conductivity, suggesting that PHC-Gel can be utilized to fabricate wearable signal-response and temperature sensors. In summary, PHC-Gel has broad application prospects in energy-saving smart windows, smart wearable sensors, temperature monitors, infant temperature detection, and thermal management.
Highly Flexible, Multipixelated Thermosensitive Smart Windows Made of Tough Hydrogels

Abstract:In a cold night, a clear window that will become opaque while retaining the indoor heat is highly desirable for both privacy and energy efficiency. A thermally responsive material that controls both the transmittance of solar radiance (predominantly in the visible and near-infrared wavelengths) and blackbody radiation (mainly in the mid-infrared) can realize such windows with minimal energy consumption. Here, we report a smart coating made from polyampholyte hydrogel (PAH) that transforms from a transparency state to opacity to visible radiation and strengthens opacity to mid-infrared when lowering the temperature as a result of phase separation between the water-rich and polymer-rich phases. To match a typical temperature fluctuation during the day, we fine-tune the phase transition temperature between 25 and 55 °C by introducing a small amount of relatively hydrophobic monomers (0.1 to 0.5 wt % to PAH). To further demonstrate an actively controlled, highly flexible, and high-contrast smart window, we build in an array of electric heaters made of printed elastomeric composite. The multipixelated window offers rapid switching, ∼70 s per cycle, whereas the device can withstand high strain (up to 80%) during operations.
Development of Advanced Solid-State Thermochromic Materials for Responsive Smart Window Applications

Abstract:This study introduces the synthesis and detailed characterization of a novel thermochromic material capable of reversible alterations in its thermotropic transmittance. Through an emulsion polymerization process, this newly developed material is composed of 75–85% octadecyl acrylate and 0–7% allyl methacrylate, demonstrating a pronounced discoloration effect across a narrow yet critical temperature range of 24.5–39 °C. The synthesized powder underwent a battery of tests, including differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as scanning electron microscopy. These comprehensive evaluations confirmed the material's exceptional thermal stability, uniform particle size distribution, and strong anchoring properties. Building upon these findings, we advanced the development of thermochromic polyvinyl butyral films and laminated glass products. By utilizing a coextrusion technique, we integrated these films into laminated glass, setting a new benchmark against existing glass technologies. Remarkably, the incorporation of thermochromic PVB films into laminated glass led to a significant reduction in solar irradiance of 20–30%, outperforming traditional double silver low-emissivity glass. This achievement demonstrates the exceptional shading and thermal insulation properties of the material. The research presented herein not only pioneers a valuable methodology for the engineering of smart materials with tunable thermotropic transmittance but also holds the key to unlocking enhanced energy efficiency across a spectrum of applications. The potential impact of this innovation on the realm of sustainable building materials is profound, promising significant strides toward energy conservation and environmental stewardship.

Energy-Efficient Smart Window Based on Thermochromic Hydrogel with Ultrahigh Visible Transparency and Unprecedented Infrared Transmittance Modulation

Abstract:Abstract Both high visible transparency and strong solar modulating ability are highly required for energy-saving smart windows, but conventional responsive materials usually have low transparency and narrow solar transmittance range. Herein, we report a significant advance toward the design and fabrication of responsive smart windows by trapping novel V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2 doped poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm) thermochromic liquid hydrogel within two glass panels. The smart window is highly transparent to allow solar transmittance at low temperatures, while turns opaque automatically to cut off solar energy gain when exposed in sunlight. With a remarkably low content (1.0wt‰) of dopant, V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2/PNIPAm (VSP) hydrogels exhibit ultrahigh luminous transmittance Tlum of 92.48% and solar modulation ∆Tsol of 77.20%. The superior performance is mainly attributed to that V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2 doping induces PNIPAm particles’ size reduction and internal structure change. W-doping decreases the phase transition temperature (Tc) of VO2 from 68 ºC to ~30 ºC (close to the Tc of PNIPAm), contributing to an unprecedented infrared transmittance modulation. Especially, the smart window shows excellent energy-saving during daytime outdoor demonstrations where practically achievable cooling temperature reaches up to 15.1 ºC. In addition, the smart window exhibits outstanding stability, as embodied by unchanged optical performance even after 100 transparency-opaqueness reversible cycles. This new type of thermochromic hydrogel offering unique advantages of shape-independence, scalability together with soundproof functionality promises potential applications in energy-saving buildings and greenhouses.
PAM-PNIPAM/W-doped VO2 thermochromic hydrogel film with high solar modulation capability for smart windows deployment

Abstract:Passively responsive thermochromic smart window, which can modulate indoor incident solar light automatically at relatively high outdoor temperature, is a practical energy-saving device for construction and automotive industries. In this paper, a thermochromic composite hydrogel film based on W-doped vanadium dioxide (W-VO2), poly N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNIPAM) and polyacrylamide (PAM) is presented and this hydrogel film was prepared between two quartz substrates to form the sandwich structured smart window. In this thermochromic system, 2 wt% monoclinic W-VO2 were dispersed in the hydrogel film with the thickness of 0.1 mm. The introduction of PAM changes the flow-state PNIPAM microgel to hydrogel, which dramatically improved the practicality of the PNIPAM-based smart window. When the outdoor temperature is higher than 40 °C, the solar modulation capacity of this passive smart window, with a high luminous transmittance of 72% at 25 °C, can reach 46.3%. The smart window possesses high solar modulation ability and more than 20% luminous transmittance even after 40 times high temperature durability tests.

Abstract:Thermoresponsive polymers that exhibit phase transition in response to temperature change can be used as material for smart windows because they can control solar light transmission depending on the outside temperature. The development of thermoresponsive polymers for a smart window that can be used over a wide temperature range is required. Therefore, to obtain smart window materials that can be used at various temperatures, three-dimensional thermoresponsive P(NIPAm-co-BA) hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization from main monomer N-isopropylacrylamide, comonomer butyl acrylate, and crosslinking agent N,N ′ -methylenebisacrylamide (MBAm) in this study. This study examined the effect of BA content on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and the solar light transmittance of crosslinked P(NIPAm-co-BA) hydrogel films. The LCST of hydrogel films was found to be significantly decreased from 34.3 to 29.5°C with increasing BA content from 0 to 20 mol%. It was found that the transparent films at T = 25 ° C ( T < LCST ) were converted to translucent films at a higher temperature ( T = 45 ° C ) ( T > LCST ). These results suggested that the crosslinked P(NIPAm-co-BA) hydrogel materials prepared in this study could have high potential for application in smart window materials.

Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows realize an intelligent response to changes in environmental temperature through reversible physical phase transitions. They complete a real-time adjustment of solar transmittance, create a livable indoor temperature for humans, and reduce the energy consumption of buildings. Nevertheless, conventional materials that are used to prepare thermochromic smart windows face challenges, including fixed transition temperatures, limited solar modulation capabilities, and inadequate mechanical properties. In this study, a novel thermochromic hydrogel was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl hydroxyethyl celluloses (HBPEC) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) by using a simple one-step low-temperature polymerization method. The HBPEC/PNIPAM hydrogel demonstrates a wide response temperature (24.1–33.2 °C), high light transmittance (Tlum = 87.5%), excellent solar modulation (ΔTsol = 71.2%), and robust mechanical properties. HBPEC is a functional material that can be used to adjust the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the smart window over a wide range by changing the degree of substitution (DS) of the butoxy group in its structure. In addition, the use of HBPEC effectively improves the light transmittance and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. After 100 heating and cooling cycles, the hydrogel still has excellent stability. Furthermore, indoor simulation experiments show that HBPEC/PNIPAM hydrogel smart windows have better indoor temperature regulation capabilities than traditional windows, making these smart windows potential candidates for energy-saving building materials.

Abstract:Smart windows are effective in reducing the energy consumption of air conditioning and lighting systems, while contributing to maintaining the comfort zone of temperature in the indoor environment. Currently used smart windows mainly rely on traditional single-phase thermochromic material in which only one abrupt optical change occurs during temperature changes, and their inherent characteristics may not be suited for a practical balance of energy saving and privacy protection. Here, we developed a novel bidirectional optically responsive smart window (BSW) with unique bidirectional optical response features by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/potassium tartrate (PTH) micelles into PNIPAM hydrogel to form a composite hydrogel, which was encapsulated in two glass panels. The upper critical solution temperature (UCST) and lowest critical solution temperature (LCST) of the material can be individually adjusted and are capable of matching the human comfort zone of temperature. In addition, the smart window exhibits remarkable transparency (92.5%), visible light transmission ratio (Tlum = 91.31%), and excellent solar modulation (ΔTsol,UCST = 76.34%, ΔTsol,LCST = 76.75%). Moreover, it possesses selectivity in transmitting light in the infrared band of solar radiation and can complete the "transparent-opaque" transition in a very narrow temperature range (<1 °C). When at comfortable temperatures, the highly transparent smart windows facilitate interior light and appreciation of the view. At low temperatures, SDS/PTH micelles aggregate to form large micelles, blocking the transmission of light and protecting customer privacy. At high temperatures, PNIPAM can undergo a "sol-gel" transition, thus blocking incident solar radiation. Taken together, these proposed materials with bidirectional optical response characteristics would be harnessed as a promising platform for building energy conservation, anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and temperature monitoring.

Toughness and Thermoresponsive Hydrogel for Sandwich Smart Window with Adaptive Solar Modulation and Energy Saving

Abstract:Thermochromic hydrogels with self-regulating solar transmittance are gaining increasing attention due to their significant potential in the fields of smart windows and energy conservation. Smart windows incorporating viscosity-tough hydrogels as an interlayer exhibit enhanced advantages in resisting external forces. In this study, a tough and thermoresponsive composite hydrogel was developed by incorporating poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) nanoparticles (PNIPAM NPs) and W-doped VO2 into a polyacrylamide-agar (PAM-Agar) double network hydrogel. Upon solar irradiation, thermochromism of PNIPAM NPs could regulate the visible light transmittance of the composite hydrogel and the photothermal effect of W-VO2 contributes to the optical regulation and NIR shielding. The smart window, with the composite hydrogel as an interlayer, demonstrates excellent optical modulation capabilities, with a luminous transmittance (Tum(20 °C)) of 86.81%, high light modulation (ΔTum = 78.89%), a high solar modulation (Tsol) of 83.59%, and a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32.6 °C. The composite hydrogel's superior toughness (0.215 MJ/m3) also enhances the impact resistance of the smart window glass. Additionally, the adhesion between the hydrogel and the glass, with a maximum peeling force of up to 151 N/m (attributed to interactions between the amide groups and the silicon hydroxyl groups), was confirmed through a falling ball experiment. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits a certain degree of thermal insulation, further promoting its utility in energy-saving applications. In conclusion, this study highlights the significant potential of such composite hydrogels in the development of smart windows for energy-efficient buildings.
Molecular Confinement Engineering Induced Super Thermostable and RT‐Adjustable Gel for Tri‐Heat‐Channeled Smart Window

Abstract:A robust thermochromic hydrogel is constructed through molecular confinement engineering, which overcomes the fundamental challenges of conventional thermochromic hydrogel for smart window applications. Utilizing the PNC gel and an unexplored thermal management mechanism that integrates thermal conduction, thermal radiation, and evaporative cooling regulation, a tri‐heat‐channeled smart window is exploited. Thermochromic hydrogel‐based smart windows hold great potential for building energy‐saving. However, most of thermochromic hydrogels possess high response temperatures (RT) and poor size stability under heat, resulting in limited energy‐saving performance for smart windows. Here, a printable thermochromic gel (PNC) is reported with low thermal shrinkage and tunable RT for smart windows applications via molecular confinement engineering. The RT of PNC gel is well within the comfort temperature zone of the human body and can be modulated (26.5–31.5 °C) by the introduced support networks. Importantly, the resultant gel exhibits a super transmittance (95%) in visible light and an outstanding modulation (87%) for sunlight. Based on PNC gel, a tri‐heat‐channeled smart window is fabricated using a multilevel thermal regulation strategy that couples conduction, radiation, and evaporative cooling. The tri‐heat‐channeled smart window demonstrates outstanding daytime cooling (10 °C lower than conventional windows) and can cut off 30% of annual heating, ventilation, and air‐conditioning (HAVC) energy consumption. Furthermore, a novel smart window is designed with invisible shutters that appear only when needed. This work offers novel clues for constructing versatile gels and innovative smart windows for building energy‐saving.

Transparent Photochromic Coatings for Smart Windows and Information Storage

Abstract:By utilizing phosphotungstic acid (PWA) as an inorganic photochromic filler and methacrylate derivatives and N‐vinylpyrrolidone copolymer as the organic matrix, an organic–inorganic composite photochromic material is prepared. This coating shows great potential for practical applications in smart windows and information storage. Organic–inorganic composite photochromic coatings receive significant attention in energy utilization and conservation due to their easy application and rapid photoresponse. However, their high sensitivity to moisture limits practical applications. This study fabricates organic–inorganic composite functional coatings using a simple one‐pot method, producing materials with excellent photoresponsive, water resistance, and thermal insulation. Unmodified phosphotungstic acid serves as the inorganic photochromic filler, while methacrylate derivatives act as the polymer matrix, resulting in coatings with high initial transparency (over 85%). After 5 min of UV exposure, the samples shift to nearly non‐transmittable states in the visible range and maintain color depth through 14 coloring‐erasing cycles. Unlike polyvinylpyrrolidone substrates, which absorb moisture and soften quickly, this coating has a static water contact angle of up to 91.7°, showing excellent water resistance. Additionally, the composite material provides effective heat insulation in simulated chamber experiments, lowering the temperature by 15 °C compared to untreated chambers. Abstract:A series of thermosensitive ionic hydrogels with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase transition behavior are prepared as ionic thermoelectric materials. The tunable LCST in combined with the excellent thermoelectric properties enables a prototype two‐in‐one thermotropic and thermoelectric smart window that can be adjusted to suit the application requirements in different regions and seasons. Harvesting low‐grade waste heat into electrical energy is recognized as a promising solution for sustainable energy supply. In parallel, thermotropic smart windows have emerged as an efficient way to reduce building energy consumption. It is posit that thermotropic smart windows with inherent thermoelectric property may offer unique advantages for practical applications. Herein, the preparation and characterization of a series of ionic hydrogels that exhibit temperature‐sensitive phase transition behavior is reported, which are suitable for both thermotropic smart windows and thermoelectric generators. Notably, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of this ionic hydrogels can be feasibly modulated, and the thermoteopic phase transition also induces a sharp increase in their Seebeck coefficient, reaching up to 39.03 mV K−1 with a power factor (PFi) value up to 0.838 mW m−1 K−2. A prototype dual functional thermotropic smart window that simultaneously works as an ionic thermoelectric generator is further demonstrated, achieving both efficient phase transition driven by solar heat at ≈26 °C and an energy density up to 250 mJ m−2. This study offers new opportunity for the development of smart materials that can bridge the gap between thermal comfort and energy sustainability for energy harvesting and smart building applicat.

Abstract:Smart window technology offers significant energy-saving potential while maintaining aesthetics. However, existing responsive materials for smart windows either require power to function or suffer from oxidation and durability issues. The proposed system introduces a new category of thermochromic smart materials with superior environmental stability compared with conventional thermochromic materials such as vanadium dioxide (VO2) and water-rich hydrogels. Moreover, this polymer film can be easily synthesized and applied to large-area panels without any hassle or tinting effects.

Abstract:Energy issues are getting more and more attention, and how to reduce indoor energy consumption while meeting people's daily needs is an important topic. Inspired by the chameleon's discoloration, we fabricated a temperature-responsive energy-saving smart window, which was responsive to natural weather. Temperature was used as a "signal source" to stimulate the gel response, and the gel acts as the "chameleon pigment cell" to control the release of nonionic surfactants acting as the "pigment". A controllable initial lower critical solution temperature of the smart window was achieved with an adjustable range of 24–37 °C. In addition, the introduction of ethylene glycol and an ultraviolet absorber (2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone-5-sulfonic acid) endowed the gel with the properties of antifreezing and screening ultraviolet rays. The smart windows also exhibited excellent reversibility and sensitivity to temperature and can achieve the effect of controlling indoor temperature and reducing indoor cooling energy. Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows possess great application potential in terms of building energy conservation . Herein, a novel smart window is designed by combining thermochromic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and polypyrrole (Ppy). The photothermal conversion effect of Ppy could effectively accelerate the phase transition of PNIPAm. The Ppy could provide extra heat for PNIPAm hydrogel, the phase transition time of PNIPAm/Ppy would be reduced to 3 min(12 min for pure PNIPAm hydrogel). The smart window exhibits excellent solar modulation efficiency(53.7 %). Different concentrations of KCl could regulate phase transition temperature of PNIPAm between 20 and 32 °C. Under irradiation of simulated light for 20 min, the water temperature of test tube covered by PNIPAm/Ppy smart window is 3.5 °C lower than that of blank glass. Moreover, T-ECD based on PNIPAm/Ppy could reduce phase transition time to 90 s. The electrochromic property of Ppy could endow T-ECD with more colours, and The T-ECD exhibits high solar modulation efficiency(63.0 %) which could decline transmittance to 0.2 %. PNIPAm/Ppy composite hydrogel provides new ideas for the design of thermochromic smart windows and thermo-electrochromic dual-response devices.

Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows have strong competitive advantages in the realm of building energy conservation. However, achieving thermochromic smart window with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), high solar modulation (ΔT sol), and excellent visible light transmittance (T lum) remains a great challenge. Here, a novel composite hydrogel based on polydiisopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm) doped with carrageenan (KCA) and Na2SiO3 was developed for high-performance smart window. The lower LCST of PNIPAm was precisely tuned in a range from 25 °C to 28 °C by controlling the content of added Na2SiO3. The inclusion of KCA diminishes agglomeration within the gel system and enhances both T lum and ΔT sol. As a result, the KCA/Na2SiO3/PNIPAm exhibits a high T lum (87.37 %), ΔT sol (69.65 %), a lower LCST (27.2 °C), and a high atmospheric window emissivity (0.962). The smart window achieves temperature drop of 12.3 °C under direct sunlight, and keeps highly stable even after 100 cycle tests high and low-temperature durability due to its robust solar modulation capability. This work offers valuable insights for developing high-performance and robust thermochromic smart windows and holds promising applications in building energy conservation.
