Abstract:Developing high-efficiency and low-cost non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vital due to its important role in renewable energy technologies, which still remains a big challenge. Transition-metal phosphides have been proved as promising OER catalysts. Herein, we fabricated P-functionalized Ni-Fe nanocomposites as an efficient OER catalyst using phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs; a type of bacteria with a high content of phosphorus) as the phosphorus source and carbon precursors. The Ni-Fe nanoparticles were highly dispersed on the carbon matrix due to the polyphosphate-confined effect of nickel and iron ions. The prepared P-functionalized Ni-Fe nanocomposites required an overpotential of only 268 mV on a glassy carbon electrode and only 137 mV on nickel foam to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) for the OER, values much lower than those of currently reported NiFe-based OER catalysts. The high catalytic activity of the P-functionalized Ni-Fe nanocomposites was ascribed to good dispersion of Ni and Fe, facile electron transfer, enhanced conductivity and wettability. Therefore, this work provides an efficient and low-cost OER electrocatalyst for practical application.
