Ground Movement Induced by Shield Tunnelling: A Review

Abstract:Shield tunnelling will cause ground movement which could damage the existing infrastructures. Research on the relationship between shield tunnelling and ground movement is necessary, especially in a city with a large population density. This paper summarizes the existed prediction methods of ground movement induced by shield tunnelling. These methods include empirical methods, analytic methods, laboratory model tests, and numerical analysis methods. By comparing these methods, it can be concluded that appropriate prediction methods on ground movement induced by shield tunnelling should be selected for local circumstances. Both the theoretical and practical methods should be taken into consideration when predicting the settlement caused by shield tunnel construction.
