Abstract:In this paper, a layered, undirected-network-structure, optimization approach is proposed to reduce the redundancy in multi-agent information synchronization and improve the computing rate. Based on the traversing binary tree and aperiodic sampling of the complex delayed networks theory, we proposed a network-partitioning method for pinning dynamic networks, with a more simplified, analyzable structure, and all of the traversed nodes are mathematically asymptotically synchronized at the same time. Moreover, a systematic implementable approach is proposed for application. The approach could be separated into two main steps: the first is a method of network partition that reduces the trivial interaction, which does not affect the information traversal, and the second involves applying the time-dependent functional approach of Lyapunov to give global exponential conditions, under the criteria for the synchronization of multiple agents, with a lower conservatism of the decision variables compared to some other results, so that the information available could fully benefit from the actual discrete-time communication pattern. Both mathematical proofs and numerical example evidence are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the implemented approach. This class contains a number of practically interesting systems, for instance, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation systems or the ground-air coordinated unmanned aerial system.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of output synchronization is investigated for the heterogeneous network with an uncertain leader. It is assumed that parameter perturbations influence the nonidentical linear agents, whose outputs are controlled to track the output of an uncertain leader. Based on the hierarchical structure of the communication graph, a novel control scheme is proposed to guarantee the output synchronization. As there exist parameter uncertainties in the models of the agents, the internal model principle is used to gain robustness versus plant parameter uncertainties. Furthermore, as the precise model of the leader is also not available, the adaptive control principle is adopted to tune the parameters in the local controllers. The developed new technique is able to simultaneously handle uncertainties in the follower parameters as well as the leader parameters. The agents in the upper layers will be treated as the exosystems of the agents in the lower layers. The local controllers are constructed in a sequential order. It is shown that the output synchronization can be achieved globally asymptotically and locally exponentially. Finally, a simulation example is given to illustrate the effectiveness and potential of the theoretic results obtained.

Abstract:This note addresses the problem of synchronized output regulation of linear networked system where all the nodes have their outputs track signals produced by the same exosystem and the state of exosystem is accessible only to leader nodes, while follower nodes regulate their outputs via a distributed synchronous protocol. This problem can be decoupled into two: one is the output regulation problem on the synchronous manifold and the other is the stability problem of synchronous manifold. The proposed synchronous protocol is independent of the network topology. The stability of synchronous manifold is analyzed through the permissible eigenvalue region and the requirements of information graph. Finally, a numerical example illustrates the efficacy of the presented results.
Global Synchronization of Directional Networked Systems with Eventually Dissipative Nodes

Abstract:In the existing literature related to the global synchronization of networked systems, the V-uniformly decreasing condition on the nodal self-dynamics has often been assumed in advance. However this assumption excludes nonuniformly Lipschitz systems, such as the well-known Lorenz oscillators. In this paper, we adopt the eventual dissipativity condition to relax the V-uniformly decreasing condition such that the obtained results are applicable to some nonuniformly Lipschitz systems. Firstly the concept of synchronization degree is presented to depict the synchronizability of the nodal self-dynamics (NSD) system over its associated attractor. Then a virtual node whose trajectory is proved to ultimately evolve in the same region with that of isolated node is presented to play the reference trajectory. Next a simple global synchronization criterion that highlights the interplay between the NSD system and the network topology is presented, which can be applied for the reducible networks. Finally, a simulation example on a reducible network verifies the analytic results.

Abstract:This paper considers the cooperative output synchronization of networked fractional-order single-machine infinite-bus (FOSMIB) power systems, in which the agent's dynamic is modeled by fractional-order derivative in spite of parametric uncertainties. Combining Backstepping approach together with Graph Theory, a distributed adaptive controller is designed recursively for each agent to drive its output synchronized to its neighbors in the network while other variables in the overall system maintain bounded. It is proved that under the topology condition that the graph is connected and at least one agent can obtain the leader's information, all agents outputs can be synchronized to the leader, i.e., cooperative output synchronization of the network is achieved. The distributed controller for each agent has three parts: state feedback of itself, neighborhood information obtained from its neighbors, and parameter updates for the unknown parameters in its dynamic. Simulation result has been presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Abstract:Synchronization underlies phenomena including memory and perception in the brain, coordinated motion of animal flocks, and stability of the power grid. These synchronization phenomena are often modeled through networks of phase-coupled oscillating nodes. Heterogeneity in the node dynamics, however, may prevent such networks from achieving the required level of synchronization. In order to guarantee synchronization, external inputs can be used to pin a subset of nodes to a reference frequency, while the remaining nodes are steered toward synchronization via local coupling. In this paper, we present a submodular optimization framework for selecting a set of nodes to act as external inputs in order to achieve synchronization from a desired set of initial states. We derive threshold-based sufficient conditions for synchronization, and then prove that these conditions are equivalent to constraints on monotone submodular functions over partition matroids. Based on this connection, we map the sufficient conditions for synchronization to constraints on submodular functions, leading to efficient algorithms with provable optimality bounds for selecting input nodes. We illustrate our approach via numerical studies of synchronization in power systems.

Unfolding Substructures of Complex Networks by Coupling Chaotic Oscillators beyond Global Synchronization Regime

Abstract:In the past decade, synchronization on complex networks has attracted increasing attentions from various research disciplines. Most previous works, however, focus only on the dynamic behaviors of synchronization process in the stable region, i.e., global synchronization. In this letter, we demonstrate that synchronization process on complex networks can efficiently reveal the substructures of networks when the coupling strength of chaotic oscillators is under the lower boundary of stable region. Both analytic and numerical results show that the nodes belonging to the same component in the hierarchical network are tightly clustered according to the Euclidean distances between the state vectors of the corresponding oscillators, and different levels of hierarchy can be systematically unfolded by gradually tuning the coupling strength. When the coupling strengths exceed the upper boundary of stable region, the hierarchy of the network cannot be recognized by this approach. Extensive simulations suggest that our method may provide a powerful tool to detect the hierarchical community structure of complex systems and deep insight into the relationship between structure and dynamics of complex systems.

Abstract:This literature investigates the output synchronization control of multiple strict-feedback systems with unknown parameter, uncertain control directions and disturbance under directed communication graph. We design a decentralized controller step by step for each agent such that their outputs are synchronized and the closed-loop system is guaranteed to be bounded. As an extension of our previous work, in this literature, disturbance is considered in the agent's dynamic. It is proved that the Nussbaum item is effective not only for seeking control direction automatically but also for guaranteeing the boundedness of the overall system without additional counteraction of the disturbance. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been verified by simulation results.

Abstract:Synchronization phenomena are pervasive in coupled nonlinear systems across the natural world and engineering domains. Understanding how to dynamically identify the parameter space (or network structure) of coupled nonlinear systems in a synchronized state is crucial for the study of system synchronization. To address the challenge of achieving stable synchronization in coupled nonlinear systems, we develop a set of mathematical optimization techniques for dynamic learning of synchronization (DLS) inspired by machine learning. This technology captures the state differences between nodes within the system and dynamically adjusts weights, allowing coupled nonlinear systems to maintain a stable state of synchronization after appropriate weight adjustments. To enhance synchronization optimization, we use the Master Stability Function (MSF) to demonstrate how DLS effectively adjusts networks into their synchronization regions. We introduce several variants of the DLS technique, including adaptive, supervised, and hybrid methods, effectively promoting synchronization in heterogeneous networks such as small-world, scale-free, and random networks. The efficacy of this technique is validated through its application to simple FitzHugh-Nagumo neural networks and complex Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal networks, examining its impact on both global and local synchronization. The DLS technique proposed in this study offers a new solution to synchronization problems in dynamic network environments, addressing the deficiencies in adaptability and flexibility of existing technologies and providing a fresh perspective for understanding and implementing synchronization phenomena in coupled nonlinear systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate output synchronization problem of nonlinear systems that can be transformed into strict feedback form with unknown control direction. To this end, an augmented Laplacian potential function is introduced to construct local level distributed adaptive controllers such that outputs of networked agents can be synchronized while all other states maintain bounded. Moreover, tuning functions are designed to reduce the order of the parameter updater. In contrast to conventional adaptive backstepping procedure, both the parameter updating law and tuning function of the proposed scheme take advantage of information flow among networked agents and thus distributive in nature. It is proved that output synchronization of the entire network can be achieved by properly choosing Nussbaum functions, provided the information graph is undirected and connected. Furthermore, we also proposed a way to define a proper Nussbaum function. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, the output synchronization problem for complex dynamical networks (CDNs) with multiple output or output derivative couplings is discussed in detail. Under the help of Lyapunov functional and inequality techniques, an output synchronization criterion is presented for CDNs with multiple output couplings (CDNMOCs). To ensure the output synchronization of CDNMOCs, an adaptive control scheme is also devised. Similarly, we also take into account the adaptive output synchronization and output synchronization of CDNs with multiple output derivative couplings. At last, several numerical examples are designed to testify the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Abstract:In this paper, output consensus for a series of heterogeneous systems under semi-markov switching topology is investigated. The scenario under consideration is that none of the graph is assumed to be connected and the mode-switching delay is existed. The main technical challenge is model and controller dismatch because of time delay. Assuming every individual system is stabilizable and detectable and mild connectivity assumption on communication topology, the coupled system without model-switching delay can achieve output synchronization by using the Lyapunov method. For the coupled systems with model-switching delay, a bounded output synchronization conclusion can be given. The existence of controller design is also investigated. By the way, we prove an exponentially stable stochastic system, in mean square, with non-vanishing perturbation can achieve uniform boundedness and ultimate boundedness. Abstract:Successive lag synchronization (SLS), an important synchronization phenomenon in nature and engineering, receives little attention in stability theory. In this article, we first propose a dynamical network model to realize the SLS with diffusive and delayed couplings, where the state of each node depends on the historical states of its neighbors. We give a series of stable conditions to achieve the local stability and global stability of the SLS manifold, and address the influence of network structure to guarantee the SLS. We find that the existence of a directed spanning tree of the network structure is the necessary condition for achieving the SLS, and design a novel algorithm to regulate the network structure to reach the SLS as well. Extensive examples illustrate the SLS performance with both the Lorenz systems and Chua's circuits embedded.

Abstract:In order to improve the synchronous reliability and dependability of complex dynamical networks, methods need to be proposed to enhance the quality and robustness of the synchronization scheme. The present study focuses on the robust fault detection issue within the synchronization for a class of nonlinear dynamical networks composed by identical Lur'e systems. Sufficient conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are established to guarantee global robustH−/H∞synchronization of the network. Under such a synchronization scheme, the error dynamical system is globally asymptotically stable, the effect of external disturbances is suppressed, and at the same time, the network is sensitive to possible faults based on a mixedH−/H∞performance. The fault sensitivityH−index, moreover, can be optimized via a convex optimization algorithm. The effectiveness and applicability of the analytical results are demonstrated through a network example composed by the Chua's circuit, and it shows that the quality and robustness of synchronization has been greatly enhanced.

Abstract:Synchronization is central to many complex systems in engineering physics (e.g., the power-grid, Josephson junction circuits, and electro-chemical oscillators) and biology (e.g., neuronal, circadian, and cardiac rhythms). Despite these widespread applications-for which proper functionality depends sensitively on the extent of synchronization-there remains a lack of understanding for how systems can best evolve and adapt to enhance or inhibit synchronization. We study how network modifications affect the synchronization properties of network-coupled dynamical systems that have heterogeneous node dynamics (e.g., phase oscillators with non-identical frequencies), which is often the case for real-world systems. Our approach relies on a synchrony alignment function (SAF) that quantifies the interplay between heterogeneity of the network and of the oscillators and provides an objective measure for a system's ability to synchronize. We conduct a spectral perturbation analysis of the SAF for structural network modifications including the addition and removal of edges, which subsequently ranks the edges according to their importance to synchronization. Based on this analysis, we develop gradient-descent algorithms to efficiently solve optimization problems that aim to maximize phase synchronization via network modifications. We support these and other results with numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to investigate the output group synchronization problem for a network of heterogeneous linear systems such that the outputs of the nodes, each representing a linear system, synchronize with each other in every cluster. Two different setups in terms of availability of the states of the reference generators are taken into consideration. A unified approach inspired by the internal model principle is proposed. First, the coupled reference generators are constructed so as to produce synchronized reference trajectories. Second, feedback controllers are designed to steer the output of each node to its corresponding reference trajectory. The two setups differ from each other in that the coupling configuration for reference generators and design of feedback controllers are rather different. Specifically, when the states of the reference generators are not available, the small gain theorem is exploited to drive the outputs of the nodes to the synchronized ones of virtual reference generators. Finally, simulations are carried out to validate the theoretical findings.
LINOCS: Lookahead Inference of Networked Operators for Continuous Stability

Abstract:Identifying latent interactions within complex systems is key to unlocking deeper insights into their operational dynamics, including how their elements affect each other and contribute to the overall system behavior. For instance, in neuroscience, discovering neuron-to-neuron interactions is essential for understanding brain function; in ecology, recognizing the interactions among populations is key for understanding complex ecosystems. Such systems, often modeled as dynamical systems, typically exhibit noisy high-dimensional and non-stationary temporal behavior that renders their identification challenging. Existing dynamical system identification methods often yield operators that accurately capture short-term behavior but fail to predict long-term trends, suggesting an incomplete capture of the underlying process. Methods that consider extended forecasts (e.g., recurrent neural networks) lack explicit representations of element-wise interactions and require substantial training data, thereby failing to capture interpretable network operators. Here we introduce Lookahead-driven Inference of Networked Operators for Continuous Stability (LINOCS), a robust learning procedure for identifying hidden dynamical interactions in noisy time-series data. LINOCS integrates several multi-step predictions with adaptive weights during training to recover dynamical operators that can yield accurate long-term predictions. We demonstrate LINOCS' ability to recover the ground truth dynamical operators underlying synthetic time-series data for multiple dynamical systems models (including linear, piece-wise linear, time-changing linear systems' decomposition, and regularized linear time-varying systems) as well as its capability to produce meaningful operators with robust reconstructions through various real-world examples.

Abstract:This paper concerns the global synchronization problem of a class of complex dynamical networks with each node being a Lur'e system whose nonlinearity satisfying a slope condition. The synchronization problem is reformulated in the framework of the absolute stability theory. It is shown that the global synchronization of the network can be reduced to the test of a LMI, which in turn guarantees the absolute stability of the corresponding Lur'e system whose dimension is the same as that of a single node. A circle type criterion in frequency domain is further presented, in virtue of which the synchronization of the network can be checked graphically. It is demonstrated that the synchronizabiliby of the network can be characterized by the second largest eigenvalue of its coupling matrix. Finally, a network of Chua's oscillators is provided as a simulation example to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the synchronization problem for a class of identical linear, high order systems. The interconnections between the systems are assumed to be time-varying, directed, and the underlying graph is not necessarily connected at any time instant. We show that in this setup, even destabilization may occur through diffusive couplings. In order to overcome this problem, we present a distributed control law, which is able to guarantee positive invariance of energy level-sets, and we investigate its synchronizing properties.
