Abstract:Eight beams of 0.35-microm laser with pulse duration of about 1.0 ns and energy of 260 J per beam were injected into a cylindrical cavity to generate intense x-ray radiation on the Shengguang II high power laser facility. Plastic foils with a thickness in the range of about 3.0-45 microm were attached on the diagnostic hole of the cavity and ablated by the intense x-ray radiation. The radiative energy transport through plastic foils with different thicknesses has been studied experimentally. The burn-through time of the plastic foils has been obtained. For comparison, we also simulated the experimental results with Planckian and non-Planckian x-ray spectrum source, respectively. It is shown that for thick plastic foil the simulation with non-Planckian x-ray spectrum source is in good agreement with the experiment.
Imaging and Controlling Ultrafast Electron Pulses Emitted from Plasmonic Nanostructures.

Abstract:We experimentally study photoemission from gold nanodisk arrays using space-, time-, and energy-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. When excited by a plasmonic resonant infrared (IR) laser pulse, plasmonic hotspots are generated owing to local surface plasmon resonance. Photoelectrons emitted from each plasmonic hotspot form a nanoscale and ultrashort electron pulse. When the system is excited by an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) laser pulse, a uniformly distributed photoelectron cloud is formed across the sample surface. When excited by the IR and EUV laser pulses together, both the photoemission image and kinetic energy vary significantly for the IR laser-generated electrons depending on the time delay between the two laser pulses. These observations are well explained by the Coulomb interaction with the EUV laser-generated electron cloud. Our study offers a feasible approach to manipulate the energy of electron pulse emitted from a plasmonic nanostructure on an ultrafast time scale.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses is crucial for enhancing laser processing and phonon generation. Optimization of these applications requires ultrafast visualization of the underlying processes. In this study, we induced laser ablation using spatiotemporally manipulated double pulses focused from two angles onto a glass surface with a 0.7 ps interval, and captured the images of its dynamics with 5 sequential frames at a frame interval of 0.8 ps. The observed dynamics suggest that the laser profile reflected on the glass surface is influenced by its topography, which in turn affects the behavior of air breakdown plasmas.

Abstract:Ablation and spallation of gold thin films by an ultrashort laser pulse are simulated by using an integrated two-temperature model and molecular dynamics method with inclusion of the hot electron blast force. The simulation results show that the ultrafast laser-induced nonthermal ablation and spallation both are essentially due to dynamic tensile stress that exceeds the local material strength. It is also demonstrated that a simultaneous use of femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses could induce spallation without causing undesired front-side damage to the film. This may be suited to peel an ultrathin film (1 μm in thickness or less) from its substrate or to improve the material removal rate of precise laser processing.
Plume splitting in pico-second laser–material interaction under the influence of shock wave

Abstract:In this work, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to study the physics of plume splitting in pico-second laser material interaction in background gas. The velocity distribution shows a clear split into two distinctive components. Detailed atom trajectory track reveals the behavior of atoms within the peaks and uncovers the mechanisms of peak formation. The observed plume velocity splitting emerges from two distinguished parts of the plume. The front peak of the plume is from the faster moving atoms and smaller particles during laser–material ablation. This region experiences strong constraint from the ambient gas and has substantial velocity attenuation. The second (rear) peak of the plume velocity originates from the larger and slower clusters in laser-material ablation. These larger clusters/particles experience very little constraint from the background, but are affected by the relaxation dynamics of plume and appear almost as a standing wave during the evolution. Density splitting only appears at the beginning of laser–material ablation and quickly disappears due to spread-out of the slower moving clusters. It is found that higher ambient pressure and stronger laser fluence favor earlier plume splitting.

Abstract:A relativistic petawatt laser light can heat heavy metals over keV temperature isochorically and ionize them almost fully. Copious hard X-rays are emitted from the high-Z hot plasma which acts as X-ray sources, while they work as a cooling process of the plasma. The cooling process can affect on the creation of high energy density plasma via the interaction, however, the details are unknown. The X-ray spectrum depends on the plasma temperature, so that it is worthwhile to investigate the radiation cooling effects. We here study the isochoric heating of a solid silver foil irradiated by relativistic laser lights with a help of particle-in-cell simulations including Coulomb collisions, ionizations, and radiation processes. We have conducted a parameter survey varying laser intensity, $10^{18-20}\,\rm{W/cm^2}$, to check the cooling effects while keeping the incident laser energy constant. The silver plasma heated mainly by the resistive heating dissipates its energy by keV X-ray emissions in a picosecond time scale. The radiation power from the silver foil is found to be comparable to the incident laser power when the laser intensity is less than $10^{19}\,{\rm W/cm^2}$ under the constant energy situation. The evolution of the plasma energy density inside the target is then suppressed, due to which a highly compressed collisional shock is formed at the target surface and propagates into the plasma. The radiation spectra of the keV silver plasma are also demonstrated.

Abstract:The gas dynamics of pulsed laser ablation of silicon target in the helium as ambient is investigated via direct simulation Monte Carlo method with a real physical scale of target-substrate configuration. A shock driven process is clearly observed. It is shown that the interaction of the shock front with the target surface and the vapor front induce significant backward flux of ablated particles and oscillating behavior of vapor front. A confined layer mixed with high density Si and He atoms is formed around the contact front. Its behavior is important to the nanoparticle formation and deposition. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Ejection of Metal Particles into Superfluid 4He by Laser Ablation

Abstract:The dynamics of laser ablation of a metal target immersed in superfluid 4He is studied through time-resolved shadowgraph photography. Delayed ejection of hot micrometer-sized particles from the target surface into the liquid was indirectly observed by monitoring the formation and growth of gaseous bubbles around the particles. The experimentally determined particle average velocity distribution appears to be similar to that previously measured in vacuum but exhibits a sharp cutoff at the speed of sound in the liquid. The propagation of the subsonic particles terminates in slightly elongated nonspherical gas bubbles residing near the target, whereas faster particles reveal an unusual hydrodynamic response in the liquid. On the basis of the previously established semiempirical model developed for macroscopic objects, the ejected transonic particles exhibit a supercavitating flow to reduce their hydrodynamic drag. Supersonic particles appear to follow a completely different propagation mechanism as they leave discrete and semicontinuous bubble trails in the liquid. The relatively low number density of the observed nonspherical gas bubbles indicates that only large micron-sized particles are visualized in the experiments. Although the unique properties of superfluid helium allow detailed characterization of these processes, the developed technique can be used to study the hydrodynamic response of any liquid to fast-propagating objects on the micrometer scale.

Abstract:The dynamics of transient plasma generated by UV ns-laser ablation of selected metals (Co, Cu, Ag, Bi) were investigated by the Langmuir Probe method in angle- and time-resolved modes. Multiple ionic and electronic structures were seen for all plasmas with some corresponding to anions or nanoparticle-dominated structures. The addition of an Ar atmosphere energetically confined the plasma and increased the charge density by several orders of magnitude. For pressure ranges exceeding 0.5 Pa fast ions were generated in the plasma as a result of Ar ionization and acceleration in the double layer defining the front of the plasma plume. Several correlations between the target nature plasma properties were attempted. The individual plasma structure expansion velocity increases with the melting point and decreases with the atomic mass while the corresponding charged particle densities decrease with the melting point, evidencing the relationship between the volatility of the sample and the overall abated mass.

Abstract:Nanoparticle formation by femtosecond laser ablation is investigated for different experimental conditions. Dynamics of the laser plume expansion is visualized based on numerical simulations and the possibility of primary nanoparticle formation is analyzed. Calculations are performed for metals under different background conditions. The effects of the background environment are considered, including initial expansion stage of the ejected atoms and clusters, nucleation, collisions, and longer scale nanoparticle evolution. Nanoparticle size distribution is shown to evolve from a decreasing function to the commonly observed bell-shaped distribution as early as at 50 microseconds after the beginning of the laser pulse. However, at the end of the initial plume expansion stage, the supersaturation parameter can be sufficiently high for a much longer diffusion-driven nanoparticle growth to enter into play. In this case, the major nanoparticle formation process is based on the so-called catastrophic nucleation accompanied by collisional growth, which determines the final size distribution. The obtained calculation results explain numerous experimental findings and help to predict both nanoparticle plume evolution and changes in its size distribution.

Abstract:We combine an aerodynamic lens with a velocity-map-imaging spectrometer to make the first measurements of ultrafast dynamics in individual nanoplasmas. By using two laser pulses (800 and 400 nm) delayed by several picoseconds, we find that we can generate and control shock wave propagation in nanoplasmas, confirming a decade of theoretical predictions. Additionally, we observe pronounced asymmetries in the photoion angular distributions resulting from nanoparticles of different structure and composition, demonstrating the ability to observe nanoscale light absorption at laser intensities near the damage threshold.

Abstract:The high-speed synchrotron X-ray imaging technique was synchronized with a custom-built laser-melting setup to capture the dynamics of laser powder-bed fusion processes in situ. Various significant phenomena, including vapor-depression and melt-pool dynamics and powder-spatter ejection, were captured with high spatial and temporal resolution. Imaging frame rates of up to 10MHz were used to capture the rapid changes in these highly dynamic phenomena. At the same time, relatively slow frame rates were employed to capture large-scale changes during the process. This experimental platform will be vital in the further understanding of laser additive manufacturing processes and will be particularly helpful in guiding efforts to reduce or eliminate microstructural defects in additively manufactured parts.

Abstract:In this study, the hydrodynamic expansion and splitting effect of ultrafast laser-induced plasma plume for multi-element alloys were studied. A fully coupled hydrodynamic model for femtosecond laser ablation of multi-element alloys was presented to study the ambipolar electric field during the plume expansion process. The model utilized a level-set equation to capture the interface between the condensed phase and the gaseous phase and accounted for the reaction between different species. A time-gate direct fluorescence measurement was conducted for the target material of brass, a Cu–Zn alloy, to validate the simulation results. The simulation results showed good agreement with the experimental results and were able to predict the plume-splitting effect. The ambipolar electric field induced by charged particle distribution difference was studied in detail. It was found that the ambipolar electric field was the dominant cause for the acceleration of ions, which yielded plume splitting during the expansion process. The fully coupled HD model was further used to explore the effect of the beam spot size, laser fluence, and the pulse width on plasma plume splitting.

Abstract:XUV fluorescence spectroscopy provides information on energy absorption and dissipation processes taking place in the interaction of helium clusters with intense femtosecond laser pulses. The present experimental results complement the physical picture derived from previous electron and ion spectroscopic studies of the generated helium nanoplasma. Here, the broadband XUV fluorescence emission from high-lying Rydberg states that covers the spectral region from $6p \to 1s$ at 53.0 eV all the way to photon energies corresponding to the ionization potential of He$^+$ ions at 54.4 eV is observed directly. The cluster size-dependent population of these states in the expanding nanoplasma follows the well-known bottleneck model. The results support previous findings and highlight the important role of Rydberg states in the energetics and dynamics of laser-generated nanoplasma.

Abstract:During ultrafast laser ablation at ambient pressure, redeposition of nano-particulates occurs through backwards flux towards the end of the ablation process and is often viewed as undesirable. Here, on the contrary, we report on unique, highly symmetric redeposition patterns observed during ultrafast laser ablation of metals with closely spaced multi-spots in ambient gases. Spot symmetries were altered with a Spatial Light Modulator or beam splitting optics. At low fluence (relative to material ablation threshold), debris is highly confined within the spot patterns, while at higher fluence, jets of debris emanate along axes of symmetry reaching distances far exceeding the spot separations. These phenomena appear universal but depend on the spot proximity, substrate, ambient gas density and pulse energy. The jets, formed at the collision planes between plasma plumes, consist of agglomerated nanoparticle debris, lifted and accelerated by colliding supersonic Mach shocks whose early interactions are imprinted on the debris fields. Numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of multi-spot ablation in ambient gas supports this view of the phenomena. These observations are relevant to an improved understanding of coalescing shock waves, induced air flows and re-deposition at ambient pressure.

Abstract:Significance Intense lasers can be used to drive materials into transient states far from equilibrium. Investigations of such states and processes at the atomic scale are of fundamental significance in understanding a material’s behavior under extreme conditions. Herein, an ultrafast electron diffraction technique is used to track the atomic pathway of the entire melting process of aluminum and reveal a coherent breathing motion of polyhedral clusters in transient liquid aluminum at high temperature and high pressure. The negative expansion behavior of interatomic distances in a superheated liquid state upon heating is observed. These findings provide insight into ultrafast structural transformations and transient atomic dynamics under extreme conditions.

Abstract:Observing ultrafast laser-induced structural changes in nanoscale systems is essential for understanding the dynamics of intense light-matter interactions. For laser intensities on the order of $10^{14} \, \rm W/cm^2$, highly-collisional plasmas are generated at and below the surface. Subsequent transport processes such as heat conduction, electron-ion thermalization, surface ablation and resolidification occur at picosecond and nanosecond time scales. Imaging methods, e.g. using x-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), were hitherto unable to measure the depth-resolved subsurface dynamics of laser-solid interactions with appropriate temporal and spatial resolution. Here we demonstrate picosecond grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS) from laser-produced plasmas using XFEL pulses. Using multi-layer (ML) samples, both the surface ablation and subsurface density dynamics are measured with nanometer depth resolution. Our experimental data challenges the state-of-the-art modeling of matter under extreme conditions and opens new perspectives for laser material processing and high-energy-density science.

Abstract:Ultra-intense lasers that ionize atoms and accelerate electrons in solids to near the speed of light can lead to kinetic instabilities that alter the laser absorption and subsequent electron transport, isochoric heating, and ion acceleration. These instabilities can be difficult to characterize, but X-ray scattering at keV photon energies allows for their visualization with femtosecond temporal resolution on the few nanometer mesoscale. Here, we perform such experiment on laser-driven flat silicon membranes that shows the development of structure with a dominant scale of 60 nm in the plane of the laser axis and laser polarization, and 95 nm in the vertical direction with a growth rate faster than 0.1 fs −1 . Combining the XFEL experiments with simulations provides a complete picture of the structural evolution of ultra-fast laser-induced plasma density development, indicating the excitation of plasmons and a filamentation instability. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm that these signals are due to an oblique two-stream filamentation instability. These findings provide new insight into ultra-fast instability and heating processes in solids under extreme conditions at the nanometer level with possible implications for laser particle acceleration, inertial confinement fusion, and laboratory astrophysics.
