Abstract:In our continuous exploration and exploitation of the ocean, marine robots are powerful tools for accessing oceanic environments that are sometimes harsh or even too dangerous for humans. Early marine robots acted under human supervision, executing preprogrammed tasks or working under the control of highly trained specialists. In recent years, with the advancements in hardware and software, marine robots have begun to possess the capability to autonomously sense and adapt to the intricate ocean environment, thus working more efficiently and intelligently. By integrating recent advances in science and technology, ranging from biomimetic technology and new materials to advanced artificial intelligence methods, marine robots have the potential to be more powerful in the exploration of the ocean environment and facilitating a broader spectrum of tasks, such as studying marine life in their natural habitats or performing inspections and dexterous manipulation in the deep sea.

Abstract:Robotic spacecraft enable exploration of our Solar System beyond our human presence. Although spacecraft have explored every planet in the Solar System, the frontiers of space robotics are at the cutting edge of landers, rovers, and now atmospheric explorers, where robotic spacecraft must interact intimately with their environment to explore beyond the reach of flyby and orbital remote sensing. Here, we describe the tremendous growth in space robotics missions in the past 7 years, with many new entities participating in missions to the surface of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. We also describe the recent development of aerial missions to planets and moons, as exemplified by the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars and the Dragonfly mission to Titan. We focus on suborbital robotics—landers, rovers, and aerial vehicles—with associated challenges in sensing, manipulation, mobility, and system-level autonomy.

Abstract:Marine robotics is a fast-growing and important branch of robotics. Meanwhile, it is highly interdisciplinary and faces special challenges in the marine environment. This paper provides a systematic overview of core technologies in marine robotics. Building upon the operational “sense-think-act” paradigm, we put forward five clusters of technologies, including “sense”, “think”, “act”, “system”, and “interactions”. These interconnected five clusters of technologies form a framework for readers to have a quick grasp of the technologies in marine robotics. Following this framework, special challenges and recent progress are also presented. Finally, future trends in addressing these special challenges are also brought to readers’ attention.

Abstract:Recent advances in robotic design, autonomy and sensor integration create solutions for the exploration of deep-sea environments, transferable to the oceans of icy moons. Marine platforms do not yet have the mission autonomy capacity of their space counterparts (e.g., the state of the art Mars Perseverance rover mission), although different levels of autonomous navigation and mapping, as well as sampling, are an extant capability. In this setting their increasingly biomimicked designs may allow access to complex environmental scenarios, with novel, highly-integrated life-detecting, oceanographic and geochemical sensor packages. Here, we lay an outlook for the upcoming advances in deep-sea robotics through synergies with space technologies within three major research areas: biomimetic structure and propulsion (including power storage and generation), artificial intelligence and cooperative networks, and life-detecting instrument design. New morphological and material designs, with miniaturized and more diffuse sensor packages, will advance robotic sensing systems. Artificial intelligence algorithms controlling navigation and communications will allow the further development of the behavioral biomimicking by cooperating networks. Solutions will have to be tested within infrastructural networks of cabled observatories, neutrino telescopes, and off-shore industry sites with agendas and modalities that are beyond the scope of our work, but could draw inspiration on the proposed examples for the operational combination of fixed and mobile platforms.
Soft Robots for Ocean Exploration and Offshore Operations: A Perspective

Abstract:The ocean and human activities related to the sea are under increasing pressure due to climate change, widespread pollution, and growth of the offshore energy sector. Data, in under-sampled regions of the ocean and in the offshore patches where the industrial expansion is taking place, are fundamental to manage successfully a sustainable development and to mitigate climate change. Existing technology cannot cope with the vast and harsh environments that need monitoring and sampling the most. The limiting factors are, among others, the spatial scales of the physical domain, the high pressure, and the strong hydrodynamic perturbations, which require vehicles with a combination of persistent autonomy, augmented efficiency, extreme robustness, and advanced control. In light of the most recent developments in soft robotics technologies, we propose that the use of soft robots may aid in addressing the challenges posed by abyssal and wave-dominated environments. Nevertheless, soft robots also allow for fast and low-cost manufacturing, presenting a new potential problem: marine pollution from ubiquitous soft sampling devices. In this study, the technological and scientific gaps are widely discussed, as they represent the driving factors for the development of soft robotics. Offshore industry supports increasing energy demand and the employment of robots on marine assets is growing. Such expansion needs to be sustained by the knowledge of the oceanic environment, where large remote areas are yet to be explored and adequately sampled. We offer our perspective on the development of sustainable soft systems, indicating the characteristics of the existing soft robots that promote underwater maneuverability, locomotion, and sampling. This perspective encourages an interdisciplinary approach to the design of aquatic soft robots and invites a discussion about the industrial and oceanographic needs that call for their application.

Abstract:The development of space robots is vital to broadening human cognitive boundaries. Compared with rigid space robots with limited degrees of freedom, soft robots exhibit apparent advantages of dexterity, adaptability, and robustness. Successes such as inflatable antennas have attracted interest in soft space mechanisms. Soft robots are expected to have a role in future on‐orbit missions and planetary exploration. The development of space robots is vital to broadening human cognitive boundaries. Space robots have been deployed in space science experiments, extravehicular operations, and deep space exploration. The application of space robots undoubtedly reduces the risk and cost of space activities. Traditional space robots primarily utilize rigid structures, resulting in limited degrees of freedom, which restricts their operational capabilities. In contrast, soft robots with greater flexibility and robustness may be used for future space exploration. Soft robots applied in space environments must overcome significant challenges associated with ultrahigh vacuum, microgravity, extreme temperatures, and high‐energy radiation. Herein, a comprehensive analysis of the key advantages of soft robots is presented based on the special requirements of the space environments for soft robots. Furthermore, brief insights into how soft robots must be changed in terms of their design, modeling, fabrication, sensing, and control to adapt to space environments are discussed. Specifically, soft robot scenarios with potential space application value are introduced. Finally, opinions regarding the potential directions of soft space robots are provided.

Abstract:One of the ambitions of Science Robotics is to deeply root robotics research in science while developing novel robotic platforms that will enable new scientific discoveries. Of our 10 grand challenges, the first 7 represent underpinning technologies that have a wider impact on all application areas of robotics. For the next two challenges, we have included social robotics and medical robotics as application-specific areas of development to highlight the substantial societal and health impacts that they will bring. Finally, the last challenge is related to responsible innovation and how ethics and security should be carefully considered as we develop the technology further.

Abstract:The paper addresses DLR's (German Aerospace Center) expertise in space robotics by hand of corresponding milestone projects including systems on the International Space Station. The key technologies for the development of an artificial robonaut generation with mechatronic ultralight weight arms and multifingered hands are introduced. The third arm generation is nearly finished now, approaching the limits of what is technologically achievable today with respect to light-weight and power losses. In a similar way DLR's second generation of artificial 4-fingered hands is a big step towards higher reliability, manipulability and overall performance.

Abstract:Space exploration and exploitation depend on the development of on-orbit robotic capabilities for tasks such as servicing of satellites, removing of orbital debris, or construction and maintenance of orbital assets. Manipulation and capture of objects on-orbit are key enablers for these capabilities. This survey addresses fundamental aspects of manipulation and capture, such as the dynamics of space manipulator systems (SMS), i.e., satellites equipped with manipulators, the contact dynamics between manipulator grippers/payloads and targets, and the methods for identifying properties of SMSs and their targets. Also, it presents recent work of sensing pose and system states, of motion planning for capturing a target, and of feedback control methods for SMS during motion or interaction tasks. Finally, the paper reviews major ground testing testbeds for capture operations, and several notable missions and technologies developed for capture of targets on-orbit.

Abstract:The ocean covers about two-thirds of the earth and has a great effect on the future existence of all human beings. About 37% of the world’s population lives within 100 km of the ocean. The ocean is generally overlooked as we focus our attention on land and atmospheric issues; we have not been able to explore the full depths of the ocean and its abundant living and non-living resources. For example, it is estimated that there are about 2,000 billion tons of manganese nodules on the floor of the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands. We discovered, by using manned submersibles, that a large amount of carbon dioxide comes from the seafloor and extraordinary groups of organisms live in hydrothermal vent areas. Marine robots including unmanned surface vehicles and unmanned underwater vehicles can help us better understand marine and other environmental issues, protect the ocean resources of the earth from pollution, and efficiently utilize them for human welfare. This paper briefly presents some exemplary models of recent developments in marine robots in different application areas.

Controlling Ocean One: Human–robot collaboration for deep‐sea manipulation

Abstract:<p>Deploying robots to explore venues that are inaccessible to humans, or simply inhospitable, has been a longstanding ambition of scientists, engineers, and explorers across numerous fields. The deep sea exemplifies an environment that is largely uncharted and denies human presence. Central to exploration is the capacity to deliver dexterous robotic manipulation to this unstructured environment. Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) are successful in providing passive solutions for observation and mapping but currently are far from capable of delivering human‐level dexterity. The ones providing manipulation typically are UUVs coupled with position‐controlled hydraulic arms using disjoint controllers for navigation and manipulation that require expert operators. Ocean One is a humanoid underwater robot designed specifically for underwater manipulation. In this paper, we present Ocean One's control architecture that, through a collaboration between this humanoid robot and a human pilot, enables the deployment of dexterous robotic manipulation to the deep sea. We provide detailed descriptions of this architecture's two main components: first, a whole‐body controller that creates functional autonomy by coordinating manipulation, posture, and constraint tasks, and second, a set of haptic and visual human interfaces that enable intimate interaction while avoiding micromanagement. We test the presented methods in simulation and validate them in pool experiments and in two field deployments. On its maiden mission into the Mediterranean Sea, Ocean One explored the Lune, a French naval vessel that sank in 1664 off the coast of Toulon, France. In its second expedition, Ocean One assisted human divers in investigating underwater volcanic structures at Santorini, Greece.</p>

Abstract:Robotics is an emerging synthetic science concerned with programming work. Robot technologies are quickly advancing beyond the insights of the existing science. More secure intellectual foundations will be required to achieve better, more reliable, and safer capabilities as their penetration into society deepens. Presently missing foundations include the identification of fundamental physical limits, the development of new dynamical systems theory, and the invention of physically grounded programming languages. The new discipline needs a departmental home in the universities, which it can justify both intellectually and by its capacity to attract new diverse populations inspired by the age-old human fascination with robots.

Abstract:Since the introduction of the first industrial robot Unimate in a General Motors automobile factory in New Jersey in 1961, robots have gained stronger and stronger foothold in the industry. In the meantime, robotics research has been expanding from fix based robots to mobile robots at a stunning pace. There have been significant milestones that are worth noting in recent decades. Examples are the octopus-like Tentacle Arm developed by Marvin Minsky in 1968, the Stanford Cart crossing a chair-filled room without human assistance in 1979, and most recently, humanoid robots developed by Honda. Despite rapid technological developments and extensive research efforts in mobility, perception, navigation and control, mobile robots still fare badly in comparison with human abilities. For example, in physical interactions with subjects and objects in an operational environment, a human being can easily relies on his/her intuitively force-based servoing to accomplish contact tasks, handling and processing materials and interacting with people safely and precisely. The intuitiveness, learning ability and contextual knowledge, which are natural part of human instincts, are hard to come by for robots. The above observations simply highlight the monumental works and challenges ahead when researchers aspire to turn mobile robots to greater benefits to humankinds. This book is by no means to address all the issues associated mobile robots, but reports current states of some challenging research projects in mobile robotics ranging from land, humanoid, underwater, aerial robots, to rehabilitation.

Abstract:Space robots have attracted increasing attention for performing, autonomously or telerobotically, on-orbit servicing missions such as repairing, refueling, and upgrading spacecraft; reusing space assets; and on-orbit assembly. The extension of robot application to space can release astronauts from risky, time-consuming, and expensive extravehicular activities [1]. However, in the microgravity environment, the floating base of a space robot will be disturbed by the robot's arm motion when it approaches or manipulates a target. The motion of the spacecraft base resulting from this disturbance will, conversely, affect the motion of end effectors (known as coupling dynamics), making control of space robots more complicated than that of fixed-base robots. In addition, such a disturbance of spacecraft attitude may result in a communication interruption between the spacecraft and the ground station or a failure of energy accumulation caused by disorientation of solar panels [2].

Abstract:This work presents the most recent research in Intelligent Intervals, which combines modern information technology and advanced robotics. Researchers use robots outfitted with various sensors and instruments on the surface of other planets, in orbit, or as aides to astronauts. The ability of space robots to move, work, and intelligently explore without needing to be touched on a frequent basis or relying heavily on human operators is important to their use. This necessitates the ability to comprehend the chaotic or unfamiliar environment in which people find themselves. In such a scenery, intellectual thinking about perception is required to carry out actions in a meaningful and consistent manner. As a result, the effectiveness of robotics and automated space systems in space exploration is intimately related to robot intelligence or autonomy. The Smart Space initiative has evolved in scope and complexity since its inception in 1996. The core of a smart space is a ubiquitous sensor network integrated into the human living environment that can track a large number of people and other objects in space. With the help of intelligent space, mobile robots operate in human living areas and provide a variety of services, such as human direction. Robots are becoming more capable of solving tough space resources and planetary surfaces with autonomy and prowess as space agencies throughout the world improve their robotic missions, proving their value and usefulness in every mission. The demand for this capability is increasing as international space agencies need humans and intelligent robots.
