Abstract:Big Data is defined as an emerging paradigm that includes complex and large-scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional tools. Traditional data analytics methods have been commonly used for many applications, such as text classfication, image recognition, and video tracking. For analysis purposes, these data often need to be represented as vectors. However, many other types of data objects in real-world applications contain rich feature vectors and structure information, such as chemical com pounds in bio-pharmacy, brain regions in brain networks and users in social networks. Unfortunately, vector representa tions are very simple features that do not inherently contain the object’s structure information. In reality, objectsmay have complicated characteristics depending on how the objects are assessed and characterized. Data may also reside in het erogeneous domains, such as traditional tabular-based data, sequential patterns, social networks, time series information, and semi-structured data. As a result, novel data analytics methods are needed to discover meaningful knowledge in advanced applications from objects with large-scale com plex characteristics. In total, there were 104 submissions to this IEEE ACCESS Special Section, with 39 accepted after rigorous peer review.
A Visual Analytics Approach for Equipment Condition Monitoring in Smart Factories of Process Industry.

Abstract:Monitoring equipment conditions is of great value in manufacturing, which can not only reduce unplanned downtime by early detecting anomalies of equipment but also avoid unnecessary routine maintenance. With the coming era of Industry 4.0 (or industrial internet), more and more assets and machines in plants are equipped with various sensors and information systems, which brings an unprecedented opportunity to capture large-scale and fine-grained data for effective on-line equipment condition monitoring. However, due to the lack of systematic methods, analysts still find it challenging to carry out efficient analyses and extract valuable information from the mass volume of data collected, especially for process industry (e.g., a petrochemical plant) with complex manufacturing procedures. In this paper, we report the design and implementation of an interactive visual analytics system, which helps managers and operators at manufacturing sites leverage their domain knowledge and apply substantial human judgements to guide the automated analytical approaches, thus generating understandable and trustable results for real-world applications. Our system integrates advanced analytical algorithms (e.g., Gaussian mixture model with a Bayesian framework) and intuitive visualization designs to provide a comprehensive and adaptive semi-supervised solution to equipment condition monitoring. The example use cases based on a real-world manufacturing dataset and interviews with domain experts demonstrate the effectiveness of our system.

Abstract:In the decade of data explosion, a significant challenge is how to transform data into understandings and insights that are useful to people. Visualization, the use of computer-supported, interactive visual representations of data to amplify cognition [1] , is an important approach to addressing this challenge. In particular, scientific visualization primarily represents physical or geometric data while information visualization mainly represents abstract data such as text documents, graphs, and multidimensional data. Visual analytics, springing out of the fields of information visualization and scientific visualization, is an emerging research area that targets analyzing massive amounts of information for timely decision making [2] . Its basic approach is to use interactive visual interfaces to facilitate analytical reasoning so that human perception abilities and domain knowledge can be exploited together with computational powers. Closely related to visualization, computer graphics is primarily about representation and manipulation of image data by a computer.

Abstract:In the past two decades, research in visual analytics (VA) applications has made tremendous progress, not just in terms of scientific contributions, but also in real-world impact across wide-ranging domains including bioinformatics, urban analytics, and explainable AI. Despite these success stories, questions on the rigor and value of VA application research have emerged as a grand challenge. This article outlines a research and development agenda for making VA application research more rigorous and impactful. We first analyze the characteristics of VA application research and explain how they cause the rigor and value problem. Next, we propose a research ecosystem for improving scientific value, and rigor and outline an agenda with 12 open challenges spanning four areas, including foundation, methodology, application, and community. We encourage discussions, debates, and innovative efforts toward more rigorous and impactful VA research.

Abstract:Developing effective visual analytics systems demands care in characterization of domain problems and integration of visualization techniques and computational models. Urban visual analytics has already achieved remarkable success in tackling urban problems and providing fundamental services for smart cities. To promote further academic research and assist the development of industrial urban analytics systems, we comprehensively review urban visual analytics studies from four perspectives. In particular, we identify 8 urban domains and 22 types of popular visualization, analyze 7 types of computational method, and categorize existing systems into 4 types based on their integration of visualization techniques and computational models. We conclude with potential research directions and opportunities.

Abstract:Visual analytics employs interactive visualizations to integrate users’ knowledge and inference capability into numerical/algorithmic data analysis processes. It is an active research field that has applications in many sectors, such as security, finance, and business. The growing popularity of visual analytics in recent years creates the need for a broad survey that reviews and assesses the recent developments in the field. This report reviews and classifies recent work into a set of application categories including space and time, multivariate, text, graph and network, and other applications. More importantly, this report presents analytics space, inspired by design space, which relates each application category to the key steps in visual analytics, including visual mapping, model-based analysis, and user interactions. We explore and discuss the analytics space to add the current understanding and better understand research trends in the field.
Multifaceted Visual Analytics for Healthcare Applications

Abstract:A vast amount of electronic healthcare information is now available, ranging from online healthcare articles to patient electronic health records. These electronic data sets contain valuable information that can guide the decisions of both clinical professionals and patients. However, the data are often difficult to analyze, in part because they often contain multiple facets of information. For example, patient records have information on demographics, diagnoses, medications, lab results, and symptoms. To address this challenge, we have been exploring interactive visual analysis techniques that help visualize such healthcare information in an intuitive manner and enable the discovery of actionable insights. In this paper, we present a review of three different techniques. First, we describe a visual analytic system named FacetAtlas that helps users navigate a large set of disease-related documents and understand multidimensional relationships for key semantic concepts such as symptoms and treatments. We then present SolarMap, an alternative technique to FacetAtlas that adds visual representations of facet keyword clusters to expose greater information about semantic relationships. Finally, we describe the DICON (Dynamic Icon) visualization tool, which allows users to interactively view and refine similar multidimensional patient clusters.

Abstract:With the pervasive use of information technologies, the increasing availability of data provides new opportunities for understanding user behaviors. Unearthing anomalies in user behavior is of particular importance as it helps signal harmful incidents such as network intrusions, terrorist activities, and financial frauds. In this article, we survey state-of-the-art research work in visual analytics of anomalous user behaviors and classify them into four application domains, which are social interaction, travel, network communication, and financial transaction. We further examine the research work in each category in terms of data types, visualization techniques, and interactive analysis methods. We hope that our survey can provide systematic guidelines for researchers and practitioners to find effective solutions to their research problems in specific application domains. Finally, we discuss trends of academic interest over the past decades and suggest potential directions across visual analytics of these user behaviors for future research.

Abstract:In this article we survey the basic concepts of visualization and its historical development. More details are given on the introduction of each sub-domain of visualization research: scientific visualization, information visualization and visual analytics respectively. Examples are given to illustrate the new development in this area. The case studies include the visualization and visual analytics on atmosphere simulation data, earthquake catalog data, and traffic trajectory data. Through exploration on these cases, we illustrated new approaches of analyzing and interoperating the massive amount of high dimensional data produced by measurement or computation. General strategies of visualizing such kind of data are discussed.

Abstract:Today, the society is in an age of information explosion, With the development of enterprise information technology, In ad-dition to the increasing number of data provided by government agencies, media ( traditional media) , businesses, etc, the application of new social media, Internet of things technology and so on, and the deepening of human life are also the main reasons for the rapid growth of data. Most of these data are stored in tables in a tabular form, which is tedious and difficult to understand. How to effective-ly display these data, help users understand the data, and find the underlying law, is an urgent problem to be solved. Data visualiza-tion can express abstract data into visible graphics or images, and show the correlation comparison, trend relationship between data, it effectively reveals the trend of data change, and helps to understand the large amount of complicated abstract data information and pro-vide help for business decision support. This paper regard the data age as a background and the data as a whole object of study. Visu-alization technology and visualization performance are used as means and methods to be classified and studied respectively, thus we will have a comprehensive understanding of data visualization.

Abstract:The interface for engineering analyses is very important to the manufacturing of prosthesis and biomechanics research.Although there are many medical image processing systems already,few of them can export volume data for engineering analytic use.The thesis implements three interfaces on MIPP(Medical image processing platform): STL(Stereo Lithography interface specification),IGES(Initial graphics exchange specification) and APDL(ANSYS parametric design language).Through these interfaces,volume data can be exported into STL and IGES or APDL files to be directly used by the successive finite element analysis with high precision.The research presents a new universal solution to the seamless integration of medical volume data and analysis.

Abstract:The situations of geotechnical engineering monitoring system are complicate; and there are a larger number of monitored data to need be analyzed. For the traditional database system, it is hard work to analyze the monitored data and forecast the situations of geotechnical engineering. Based on the object-oriented Visual Basic soft and the object-oriented database management development system SQL, this work develops the visual system of analysis and predication for the situations of geotechnical engineering by methods of engineering visualization and GIS, which successfully achieve good combination of the database management, analysis and predication of situations; and the information visualization. It can quickly analyze the monitored data and precisely forecast the situations of the geotechnical engineering.
