Abstract:In the first, this paper defines sticky knowledge. Then the factors, which lead the formation of sticky knowledge, are analyzed. Based on these, a theoretical model to transfer sticky knowledge is provided. Finally, a case study on the realization of the large-scale container check system through university-industry collaboration is discussed.

Abstract:Sticky knowledge transfer is very important to knowledge - based value creation. This paper reviews the studies on sticky knowledge transfer. The concept of sticky knowledge is introduced first. Then the following three streams of studies are reviewed: technological innovation process, intra - organization transfer, inter - organization transfer. Based on the above review, an integration research outline is suggested.

Abstract:It is known that global flagships' capacity and willingness to transfer knowledge in global production networks will affect the knowledge acquisition of local firms. However, the mechanism is not clear enough, or rather scattered, and thus lacks an integrated model for comprehensive conceptualization. Adopting a sample of 105 Chinese firms, we construct an integrated two-stage model to interpret the mechanism of knowledge transfer from global flagships to local firms and find that global flagships' capacity and willingness to transfer positively impact the knowledge acquired by local firms through the mediation of the knowledge contributed by the global flagships. Organizational distance and local firms' absorptive capacity affect the knowledge acquired by local firms as well. The influences of the latter two also depend on the different types of ties between global flagships and local firms.

Abstract:It's a strategic and urgent issue to choose a proper entry mode for international entrepreneurial entities. And knowledge transferring across borders is necessary to international entrepreneurial performance with the knowledge economy, coming. While stickiness of knowledge transferring across borders has a critical effect on decision making of international entrepreneurial modes. Firstly this research does a mathematical analysis by cost minimization. approach. Then on the base of theoretical results and surveying in 122 international entrepreneurial entities located in China, this research empirically finds that stickiness of knowledge transferring across borders actually affects choice of international entrepreneurial modes. Also this study result shows industry is significant variable to decision making of international entrepreneurial modes while the cultural distance is insignificant to choice of modes.

Abstract:This paper explores the characteristics of knowledge-transfer in complex technology innovations and puts forward the taxonomy of knowledge stickiness.The paper is an overview based on research papers and deduction.Knowledge distribution in complex technology innovations is complex and there is a long-tail in the knowledge-transfer demand curve.The following four types of knowledge stickiness are advanced: Szulanski stickiness,Eppinger stickiness,Eppinger leakage and von Hipple stickiness.Knowledge management in complex technology innovations could benefit from the findings of knowledge long-tail and four types of knowledge stickiness.

Abstract:The effect of knowledge about the distribution of information on knowledge transfer was examined to understand why some organizations are able to benefit from personnel mobility while others are not. The authors proposed that shared context moderated the effect of knowledge about distributed information on knowledge transfer, particularly the information pooling process. The hypotheses were tested in an experimental condition (N = 240). As predicted, knowledge of distributed information interacted with shared context to affect knowledge transfer. Two mediated moderation effects help explain this finding. Shared context moderated the effect of knowledge about distributed information with information pooling, which in turn was positively associated with group performance. Moreover, information sharing partly mediated the interactive effect of knowledge of distributed information with shared context.

Abstract:In an attempt to deeply analyze the mechanism of how relation embeddedness influences the industry-university cooperation performance by influencing the knowledge transfer between the industry and the university,this paper characterizes the industry-university interaction as trust and information sharing and introduces explicit and tacit knowledge transfer as an intermediary variable.After verifying the research hypothesis with a large sample data and structural equation model,the paper discovers that the existence of trust cost can lead to different effects of trust on explicit and tacit knowledge transfer.Therefore,this paper maintains that the trust level should be determined flexibly according to the features of knowledge activities.The paper also indicates that the industry-university cooperation,which features tacit knowledge transfer,should update the current enterprises' information sharing model from pure information acquisition to information interaction and participation,in order to reduce the 'crowding-out effect' and promote the tacit knowledge transfer in industry-university collaboration.

Abstract:This paper elaborates theories of intra-organizational knowledge creation by exploring the knowledge conversion processes of University-Industry collaboration in Chinese contexts. To describe the knowledge conversion tendency, a theoretical framework is developed by reference to Boisot (1995)'s information space. The application of the framework is described in the exploratory case study of computer aided engineering (CAE) system for vibration analysis. Analysis of the results suggests that seven certain stages can be especially indicative of cross-organizational knowledge creation, namely: Demand codification, knowledge gain, knowledge digestion, knowledge sharing, knowledge propagation, knowledge spillover, and knowledge degeneration. And a new knowledge creation theory: GDSP knowledge creation theory which enriches and advances the typical socialization externalization combination internalization (SECI) knowledge creation theory in some aspects is proposed. Furthermore, the paper concludes with a discussion of the theoretical implications of this model and suggestions for further research.

Since the origin of all tangible resources lies outside the firm, and outside resources cannot obtain the sustainable competitive advantage, it follows that competitive advantage is more likely to arise from the intangible firm-specific knowledge. Now, more and more corporate strategy theorists have considered the firm as a body of knowledge; accordingly, management of knowledge is becoming a firms' routine work. Especially in knowledge-based companies, knowledge management has come to be the firm's primary consideration. Abstract:This paper describes the results of a exploratory case study illustrating how the knowledge is transformed and created during the process of U-I collaboration in China. To describe the knowledge transform tendency, a theoretical framework is developed by reference to the Information Space which of Boisot (1995). Seven stages of knowledge co-creation in U-I collaboration are identified: Demand Codification, Knowledge Gain, Knowledge Digestion, Knowledge Sharing, Knowledge Propagation, knowledge spillover and knowledge degeneration. Based on it the GDSP knowledge creation theory which enriches and advances the typical SECI knowledge creation theory in some aspects is proposed. Abstract:We focus on issues concerning the transfer of innovative capability from universities to enterprises. First, this paper outlines a theoretical framework for the transfer of innovative capability; it then provides an institutional form of transferring innovation capability in terms of united institution of transfer (UIT). Furthermore, an empirical analysis of feasibility of transferring innovation capability in China is conducted based on knowledge production function. Finally, we conclude that institution collaboration in the context of UIT is a good way of transferring innovative capability from universities to enterprises in China. © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Abstract:Based on the current research of binary classification on knowledge transfer,since explicit and tacit knowledge are mutually tolerated in the real life,and knowledge transfer is a process in which the explicit and tacit knowledge intimately mingle together.Therefore the simply binary classification may not be proper and a new perspective to explore the pattern of knowledge transfer based on an IT platform is needed.Through a case study on the off-site audit system of China Construction Bank,a model for auditing knowledge transfer based on the commercial bank's off-site audit system is constructed,the characteristics and advantages of the pattern of knowledge transfer based on an IT platform are analyzed,the obstacles during the implementation are pointed out and some relevant measures are put forward.

University-industry collaboration: The impact of postdoctoral workstations on labor investment efficiency

Abstract:This paper investigates whether managers use knowledge transferred from university-industry collaboration when making investment decisions on labor. To establish causality, we use a difference-in-difference method based on the staggered establishment of postdoctoral workstations in Chinese firms. We find that postdoctoral workstations enable managers to improve labor investment efficiency and thus help mitigate over- and under-investment problems in labor, and the higher the operational quality of the workstation, the more significant the increase in investment efficiency. This finding is robust to utilizing the event study approach, placebo test, propensity score matching, instrumental variable, and entropy balancing. Brain gain and knowledge transfer effects between universities and industries are two plausible mechanisms. Furthermore, the main effect is more pronounced for firms located closer to prestigious universities, firms are non-state-owned enterprises, human-capital-intensive, have political connections, and without national fellows' lead. Our findings suggest that brain gain in firms does not merely increase or reduce labor investments Per se, but rather inspires managers to maintain optimal labor levels through knowledge transfer processes.

Abstract:Academic entrepreneurship (AE) is becoming an increasingly important engine in technological development and economic growth for both developed and developing countries. Despite the fact that AE has been well established in literature with regard to its knowledge transfer from university to industry (U-I), the opposite knowledge flow from industry to university (I-U) in the AE ecosystem is rather neglected. In particular, how I-U knowledge transfer from different sources dynamically contributes to AE has not gained enough attention. To address this gap, we conducted a case study of Automotive Dynamics & Control Group affiliated to Tsinghua University in China and investigated how academic entrepreneurs from this group learnt from industry how to successfully commercialize their Anti-Lock Braking System and Automated Mechanical Transmission technologies. Our study shows how I-U knowledge transfer from three distinct sources are of great significance for university researchers engaging in commercialization, including personal industry experiences, commercialization partner firms, and leading customers, each transferring specific sorts of knowledge during a specific phase of AE. Our research synthesizes literature on I-U knowledge transfer and extends knowledge on the dynamics of AE from an ecosystem-based perspective.

Abstract:Product innovation is gradually being noticed in university-industry collaboration (UIC), yet research on its impact on performance is scarce. A dynamic knowledge transfer perspective is presented in our paper, which is an integration of the dynamic nature of knowledge transfer and dynamic strategies, exploring R&D effort strategies in UIC. Further, we apply a Stackelberg differential game to portray the knowledge transfer process and investigate how product innovation affects UIC performance. The results indicate that in the scenario where the leadership positions of the two participants can be interchanged, stronger performance occurs in the case of university leadership. Equilibrium strategies that maximise the revenues always exist no matter who is the game leader, and revenues are U-shaped correlated with product innovativeness. Intriguingly, our research shows that enterprises' revenue-sharing ratios do not always lead to higher profits. Our study provides several insights for both universities and firms.

Abstract:Knowledge has vital role in the development of an economy. Universities have switched to interacting with industries like never before to achieve excellence. On the other hand, industries look forward to working and partnering with academics to a greater extent and firms are pushed to innovate by the ever-increasing competitive market forces. Fostering university/industry (U/I) relationships can pave the way for the participating firms and their subsidiaries for building social capital and portrays trust, shared goals, and network ties as the pivotal elements of the social capital theory. In this paper, we develop a theoretical model based on the integrated view that communication is the medium for building trust and strong social ties. This, in turn, can enhance the quality and effectiveness of the knowledge transferred and its utilization for inducing innovation, adapting to sophisticated technology, which in turn foster growth opportunities.

Abstract:To understand the transfer mechanism of tacit knowledge is a precondition for knowledge innovation and management. This passage chooses Cavendish laboratory in the charge of J.J. Thomson as the case and analyses the transfer routes of different kinds of tacit knowledge. It indicates: an effective transfer of tacit knowledge in R&D departments to large degree depends on the openly face-to-face communication platform. The auxiliarily skilled tacit knowledge is integrated and employed by the individual through eternal communication platform, while the critical skilled tacit knowledge like experiment method and the cognitive tacit knowledge like experiment thought are learned and absorbed by the individual through internal communication platform. Compared to the skilled tacit knowledge, the cognitive tacit knowledge has a more far-reaching impact on basic research e ciency. A technological gate keeper firstly ensure to mobilize the resources of skilled tacit knowledge for the research need of scientific communities, secondly and more profoundly shape the research routines and cultural atmosphere of scientific communities. This research is helpful for research institutes to improve performance of knowledge innovation and management.
