Abstract:Objective To explore the application effect of multidimensional Chinese orthopedics teaching practice teaching method.Methods The choice of traditional Chinese medicine, Changchun level 2011 Department of traditional Chinese medicine four class 192 students as the object of study, from March 2015 to June 2016 as study time points, to the class as a unit grouping, before two classes as the control group, application routine teaching method for practical teaching, two classes as the experimental group, using multi-dimensional teaching method teaching, through tests and teachers' questionnaire form contrast two teaching methods of teaching effect and clinical practical effect at the end of the semester.Results In the control group, the average score of the ifnal examination (81.37±1.60), 80.04% of the teachers' satisfaction during the internship period. In the experimental group, the average score of the ifnal examination (92.52±2.27), and the patients' satisfaction degree was 91.71%. Compared with the two groups of students learning achievement and practice, the results have significant statistical differences (P<0.05).Conclusion Multidimensional practice teaching in traditional Chinese orthopedics is very positive and positive inlfuence, which not only can signiifcantly improve the speed and quality of teaching, better able to from many aspects, improve the quality of orthopedics and traumatology, and can be applied in the teaching work.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical medical undergraduates' evaluation of bilingual surgical classes,and analyze the related factors affecting teaching quality.Methods Questionnaire investigation was performed on the students to investigate the students' requirements of the teacher,teaching materials and mode of teaching.After class,a theory examination was given to some of the students.Results Most of the students approved of the original-version textbook and English slides,but they hoped that lecture explanation in English accounted for 25% to 50%.The results of theory examination showed that the students had a slightly poorer grasp of the knowledge than the traditional Chinese lessons.Conclusion Bilingual classes are a necessary method to improve students' English level,and our multi-level mode is feasible.The English level of teachers and students and teaching materials are important factors affecting the teaching quality.
“LEARN”, a Novel Teaching Method for Chinese Clinical Clerkship: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:BackgroundDespite the clerkship being crucial in the training of a future doctor, no widely accepted education model has been proposed. This study devised a new model for clinical clerkship rotations, titled “LEARN” for Lecture, English-video, Advisor, Real-case and Notion, and evaluated whether the LEARN model is appropriate for medical education in China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed among 101 fourth-year students from the Xiangya School of Medicine during an Orthopaedic Surgery clerkship rotation in the Third Xiangya Hospital. They were divided into seven groups and took clerkship based on the LEARN model. A questionnaire was collected at the conclusion to measure learning outcomes.ResultsThe LEARN model was highly accepted with the acceptance of five sessions being 95.92% (94/98), 93.88% (92/98), 96.98% (97/98), 100% (98/98) and 96.94% (95/98). The outcomes of two genders were comparable, whereas a difference was observed in the test score among groups (group 3 scored 93.93 ± 5.20, higher than others). Quantitative analysis showed that positive correlations existed in participation in the Notion (Notion means students’ case discussion) section with leadership (r = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.72–0.94, p < 0.001), participation in the Real-case section with leadership (r = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.50–0.80, p < 0.001), participation in the Real-case section with mastery of inquiring skills (r = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.40–0.71, p < 0.001) and participation in the Notion section with mastery of physical examination skills (r = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.40–0.69, p < 0.001). Further qualitative analysis demonstrated that high-level participation in the English-video section indicated better outcomes in mastery of inquiring (p < 0.01), physical examination (p < 0.001), film reading (p < 0.01) and clinical reasoning (p < 0.01) skills.ConclusionOur results support the LEARN model is a promising method for medical clerkship in China. Further research involving more participants and more meticulous design is planned to test its efficacy. For refinement, educators may try to promote students’ participation in the English-video session.
A cross-cultural comparison of anatomy learning: learning styles and strategies

Abstract:Cultural influences on anatomy teaching and learning have been investigated by application of a questionnaire to medical students in British and Chinese Medical Schools. Results from the responses from students of the two countries were analyzed. Both groups found it easier to understand anatomy in a clinical context, and in both countries, student learning was driven by assessment. Curriculum design differences may have contributed to the British view wherein students were less likely to feel time pressure and enjoyed studying anatomy more than their Chinese counterparts. Different teaching approaches resulted in British students being more likely to recite definitions to learn, and the Chinese students found learning from cross-sectional images easy. Cultural differences may account for the observation that British students were more inclined to ask questions in class, and the preference of Chinese students to study in small groups. The findings give evidence to show how 'cultures of learning' influence students' approaches and indicate the importance of cultural influences as factors amongst international and home learner groups.

Abstract:In order to understand the learning of foreign students on human anatomy in Xi'an Jiaotong University,the scores of systematic anatomy examination of foreign students of 6 grades from Grade 2004 to Grade 2009 were analyzed.Combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis was used.The result shows:the distribution of the scores in total was normal;a significant difference occurred between the scores of male and female students;there were significant differences of the scores among some grades.

Abstract:Objective To explore the teaching effects of physiology lectures and students' attitude to lectures,their suggestions for contents,forms and other aspects of lectures.Methods Random sampling questionnaire survey was conducted among 500 students of 2008 grade and 2009 grade in Xiangya medical school of central south university.The percentage of the option in the questionnaire was calculated and the findings were directly described.Results All students thought that physiology lectures were necessary.Teachers should arrange lectures which students were interested in,pay attention to inspire thinking and enhance teacher-student interaction.67.6％ of students thought that the knowledge learned from lectures can be used in expanding scientific thinking.Conclusions The lectures are popular among most students,playing an important role in cultivating students' ability of strict scientific thinking.

Abstract:The clinical teaching of surgery for non-clinical students is an important content of medical education.The training purposes of non-clinical students and clinical students are different. In the clinical teaching practice of surgery, different teaching methods must be adopted,otherwise the teaching effect will be greatly reduced. At present, there are many problems in the surgical clinical teaching practice of non-clinical students, such as the lack of unified and standardized teaching mode. Teachers and students generally do not pay attention to surgical clinical teaching and so on. In view of the above reasons,this paper makes some thoughts on the surgical clinical teaching practice of non-clinical students, and puts forward relevant suggestions, including teaching hospitals should unify their understanding and strengthen the attention to non-clinical students. Combining teaching with the professional background of non-clinical students and establishing a "double teacher" system, that is,in addition to clinical surgery teachers, department personnel related to students are equipped as teaching auxiliary teachers to jointly complete relevant special teaching. Paying attention to the flexible application of various teaching modes, such as problem-based learning（PBL） and case-based learning（CBL）, and increasing the proportion of new surgical technology in teaching.Attaching importance to the use of new social media such as WeChat in the context of Internet +. Paying attention to the innovation of teaching feedback and assessment mechanism. Through the above thoughts and suggestions,we hope to provide some beneficial ideas for the surgical teaching reform and practice of non-clinical students in the future.
Study of nonsynchronous online teaching of regional anatomy for international students integrated with medical humanities and local culture during COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic imposed unexpected disruptions to anatomical educational practice, the teaching of regional anatomy for international students which has changed to an online format and faces various challenges. The challenges include creating online education homogeneous/equivalent to offline education, introducing local culture to international students, and educating students in medical humanities and ethics. Methods: To address these problems, the teaching staff integrated medical humanities and local culture into nonsynchronous online teaching of regional anatomy. Results: The nonsynchronous online teaching with interpreted videos of dissections does not significantly affect the experimental and total scores of regional anatomy courses for international students. Integrating medical humanities and local culture into this teaching model is appreciated by them and also has a good teaching effect. Conclusion: Students not only gained professional knowledge but also obtained enhanced exposure to local culture and professional spirit from this regional anatomy education.
"Doctor, teacher, translator:" International medical students' experiences of clinical teaching on an English language undergraduate medical course in China

Abstract:Background: Like many Chinese universities, Ningbo University (NBU) has two undergraduate medical courses - one taught in Mandarin for domestic students, and one taught in English for international students. This study examines the experiences of medical students who recently completed the English language program that has a particular focus on clinical placements. Methods: In-depth, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 final year medical students at NBU in April 2019. Transcripts were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: All medical student participants were non native English speakers and had a limited grasp of Chinese. Their clinical teachers were all fluent in Chinese and had variable command of English. The large majority of patients in the teaching hospitals where placements took place spoke only in Chinese. Despite the obvious challenges arising from this, students still had predominantly positive experiences of clinical placements. Although students recognized that their clinical teachers' English proficiency was variable, they felt that other attributes, such as enthusiasm, interactivity, and a desire to teach were more important factors to their learning experiences. Discussion: Despite challenging linguistic circumstances, non native English-speaking students were able to navigate the challenges of studying clinical medicine from teachers with limited English language skills and with patients who spoke virtually no English. Further studies should explore the perceptions of teachers of the program, and graduate outcomes when these students enter the workplace. Educators involved in supporting international medical students should note that non technical curricular areas such as professionalism may require greater attention where language barriers exist.

Comprehensive Analysis of Teaching Methods in Experimental Animal Surgery for Students with Different Majors and Languages

Abstract:Objective To systematically evaluate the study of animal surgery course among medical students with different majors and languages so as to provide evidences for further improve-ment education quality. Methods Ten majors and two kinds of international medical students (in total of 1 105 students;2009 grade)of Southern Medical University were subdivided into five groups ac-cording to the relationship with clinical operative manipulation. Quality of experimental animal surgery education was tested respectively. Then SPSS 13.0 was used to statistically evaluate and analyze the data. Measurement data between two groups were compared by t-test,multi-group analysis of variance between groups was conducted using one-way ANOVA. Ranked data between groups were compared using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U rank sum test. Merits and demerits of the curriculum were dis-cussed by combing statistical results with in-class condition to provide evidences for further improve-ment. Results There was no significant difference between clinical group and clinical professional group in aseptic technique and operation skills (P=0.739),but scores of the two groups were signifi-cant higher than that of associate group (P=0.004). Moreover,scores of international students who passed Chinese TOEFL were significant higher than the others (P=0.001). Differences between groups existed predominantly in the animal surgical practice rather than in basic theory or knot and sterilized methods. Conclusions For students with different majors and languages,different teaching key points should be paid attention to. Basic surgery techniques might be emphasized on for students with associ-ate clinical major and foreign students with poor Chinese language.
Perceptions of education quality and influence of language barrier: graduation survey of international medical students at four universities in China

Abstract:Background: As the number of Asian and African students studying medicine in China increases, it is imperative to evaluate the educational experiences of these international medical students (IMSs). This study was intended to investigate opinions of China-educated IMSs towards the medical curriculum and the impact of Chinese language capability on their clinical studies. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was circulated to the final-year IMSs during the graduation time from May 2019 to July 2019 in 4 universities in China. The questionnaire asked IMSs to assess the quality of medical education and provide a self-evaluation of their Chinese language capability. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine whether IMSs' Chinese language capability was associated with their clinical experiences and clinical competence. Results: Overall, we received 209 valid responses, of which 76.1% were satisfied with the quality of medical education. Genetics, physics, and mathematics were perceived as the least relevant basic courses for medical practice, and 21.5% of student reported that community-oriented medicine was a neglected subject. Notably, 58.9% of students had positive views about discussions on ethical topics during their clerkships, and 71.3% believed they had acquired sufficient clinical skills to begin a residency program. Chinese speaking skills and communication initiatives were found to be critical factors in influencing students' clinical experiences and competence. Conclusion: This study presents the perceptions of China-educated IMSs towards medical curriculum from various aspects. Results show that language influences the education experiences of IMSs. Collectively, these results indicate that the curriculum for IMSs in China should be more problem-based and community-engaged to improve IMSs' learning experiences and preparation for community deployment. Furthermore, training curriculum for the oral Chinese should be improved to equip IMSs with sufficient language competence to enable them to efficiently carry out clinical clerkship and rotations. Our findings provide evidence for benchmarking medical curricular codifications tailored for Asian and African students.
Practice and exploration of the "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode in human anatomy

Abstract:Purpose: Human anatomy is a core course of basic medicine and the first professional course for medical students. Traditional teaching includes "teacher-centered" instruction, passive learning, and a lack of interaction between teachers and students as well as between students. The aim of this study was to develop a "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode to address the mentioned drawbacks. Methods: A total of 141 clinical medical students from grades 2016 and 2017 of Chengde Medical University participated in this study. The students were randomly divided into four classes: two experimental classes and two control classes. The experimental classes experienced a "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode, while the control classes experienced a traditional teaching method. Formative assessments and questionnaires were used to assess the students' preferences and obtain feedback. Theoretical and experimental tests were carried out to detect the students' scores at the end of the semester. Results: The results of the questionnaires demonstrated that 100% of the students agreed that the multielement teaching mode was better. In the experimental test, the students in the experimental group achieved a mean score of 16.50 ± 0.3203, which was significantly higher than that of the control group 12.65 ± 0.4731 (P < 0.01). In the theoretical test, the average score of the experimental group was 45.86 ± 0.6273 and that of the control group was 46.59 ± 0.6636; thus, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The application of a "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode obtained strong approval from the students. This teaching mode not only improved students' interest in learning and increased the interaction between teachers and students as well as between students but also enhanced students' competence and will lay a solid foundation for their future careers.
Investigating the Medical Study of Overseas Students at Jinan University Medical School

Abstract:A great number of overseas students have studied medicine at Jinan University Medical School over the past decade. Statistics from the past ten years show that these students’ test scores on diagnosis and medicine I & II are lower than those of their classmates from mainland China. To address the underlying causes of this phenomenon, we implemented a series of questionnaires for overseas and mainland Chinese medical students. The results indicate that there are no significant differences between overseas students and mainland Chinese students with regard to their attitude towards the study of medicine, their approval of the teaching and learning environments or their ability to improve their independent study capabilities at Jinan University Medical School; however, overseas students prefer to study at night and sleep later than their mainland Chinese classmates. One outstanding difference between these groups is that overseas students like to arrange their studies based on their interests, regardless of available time and subject contents, and this might lead them to perform poorly on examinations during their academic term at Jinan University Medical School. Overseas students might not have achieved scores as high as their Chinese classmates is that they do not completely focus on the content taught by teachers in class, which would later be assessed by exams at the end of each academic term. This observation is actually part of our medical educational concepts, especially in Chinese medical schools. Attention should be paid by both overseas students and medical schools to this discrepancy.
