Evaluation of the Irrational Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors and H-2 Blockers among Patients Visited Chinese Hospitals

Abstract:Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H-2 blockers are the most commonly used drugs in clinical practice; inappropriate prescribing may result in increased therapeutic load and treatment cost as well. Hence, a study was conducted to determine the prescribing pattern of both PPIs and H-2 blockers in tertiary care teaching hospital and cost minimization process can be used only to compare two products that have been shown to be equivalent in dose and therapeutic effect. A retrospective observational study was carried out in a multispecialty tertiary care hospital on patients' medical records from Department of Gastroenterology and Department of General Surgery. Combination therapy were described as patients who, at one particular time, had a PPI prescription fill with an overlap of minimum of 30 days with prescription of clopidogrel during that period. The study discovered that a supply of 30 lansoprazole prescription capsules was provided to each patient. For each patient with a famotidine prescription, there were also supplies of 30 tablets. The respective price for famotidine was $0.9 per capsule, while lansoprazole cost $ 1.12 per capsule. Results also found that 63.6% of the 147 patients were male and 40.8% were female. Of the 147 patients in total, 98.8% have mellitus disease and hypertension. Only 0.9% of the 147 patients suffered from bone disease visited their healthcare provider for dermatological and ophthalmological reasons. The study discovered that a prescription mistake leads to resource wastage while at the same moment requiring the implementation of medical remedies to suppress lansoprazole and famotidine's adverse effects. The main side effect of the PPIs is the sexual dysfunction and the consistent and unnecessary use can lead to this side effect.
