Abstract:As a attractive smart material, Electrorheological (ER) fluid has been researched for many years. The main problems in conventional ER fluids are low shear stress, sedimentation and narrow temperature range. This limits the commercial application of the ER fluids and the development of the ER devices. Recent years, some new ER fluids with good mechanical properties have been developed such as synthetic polymers, polyaniline, polyurethane and other organic/inorganic composite particles as the disperse phases in the host liquid. In this paper, a type of water-free electrorheological material of titania with Ce and Y composite doping has been synthesized by a sol-gel technique. After the sols are obtained chemically, the gels are formed when the sols are aged for several hours at room temperature, the gels are dried at 70 degrees C for 8 h, the solid gels are milled into powder, then these solid particles are heated to remove all organic components in the particles and ensure that rutile titania is formed. Finally, the particles are dispersed in damping oil to form the ER fluid. Crystal structure of the particles are characterised with XRD. SEM image of the specimens is obtained by a Hitachi-570 scanning electron microscope operating at 18kV with Au sprayed on the samples prior to examination. Conductivities of the particles are measured from a two-probe method using compressed disks. Prior to mix with the damping oil, the particles are dried for 12 hours at 120 degrees C. Volume fraction of the particles in the damping oil is 0.30. The rheological properties of the ER fluid are measured by a Couette-typt rheometer with a 2mm gap between the bob and the cup under shear rate of 2.11-136s(-1) and DC electric fields of 0-3kV/mm. The experiment results show that the shear stress of the ER fluid increases with the increasing of the electric field and exhibits a typical Bingham flow behaviours. The shear stress of 17kPa at 3 kV/mm can be induced when 6.5mol% Ce and Y is doped, while the current density is less than 5 mu A/cm(2). The shear stress has a significant dependence upon the amount of Ce and Y, then the amount of reaction reagents and pH value in the solution system. A large mismatch of permittivity and conductivity plays an important role in enhancing ER effects of the ER fluid. Moreover, some additives such as dispersing agents, coupling agents are added in the ER suspension in order to improve the dispersibility of the particles in oil. These surface active agents also provide for a low zero-field viscosity and yield stress which is advantageous for devices having the largest possible dynamic range to be built.
