Abstract:To provide insights into the spreading speed and propagation dynamics of viruses within a host, in this paper, we investigate the traveling wave solutions and minimal wave speed for a degenerate viral infection dynamical model with a nonlocal dispersal operator and saturated incidence rate. It is found that the minimal wave speed c∗ is the threshold that determines the existence of traveling wave solutions. The existence of traveling fronts connecting a virus-free steady state and a positive steady state with wave speed c≥c∗ is established by using Schauder's fixed-point theorem, limiting arguments, and the Lyapunov functional. The nonexistence of traveling fronts for c<c∗ is proven by the Laplace transform. In particular, the lower-bound estimation of the traveling wave solutions is provided by adopting a rescaling method and the comparison principle, which is a crucial prerequisite for demonstrating that the traveling semifronts connect to the positive steady state at positive infinity by using the Lyapunov method and is a challenge for some nonlocal models. Moreover, simulations show that the asymptotic spreading speed may be larger than the minimal wave speed and the spread of the virus may be postponed if the diffusion ability or diffusion radius decreases. The spreading speed may be underestimated or overestimated if local dispersal is adopted.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a time periodic non-monotone and nonlocal delayed reaction-diffusion population model with stage structure. We first prove the existence of the asymptotic speed c ∗ c^* of spread by virtue of two auxiliary equations and comparison arguments. By the method of super- and sub-solutions and the fixed point theorem, as applied to the truncated problem on a finite interval, and the limiting arguments, we then establish the existence of time periodic traveling wave solutions of the model system with wave speed c > c ∗ c>c^* . We further use the results of the asymptotic speed of spread to obtain the non-existence of traveling wave solutions for wave speed c > c ∗ c>c^* . Finally, we prove the existence of the critical periodic traveling wave with wave speed c = c ∗ c=c^* . It turns out that the asymptotic speed of spread coincides with the minimal wave speed for positive periodic traveling waves. These results are also applied to the model system with two prototypical birth functions.

Abstract:Considering the importance of time delay phenomenon in disease transmission and the interdependence of time delay and spatial location, a reaction-diffusion SIR epidemic model with nonlocal time delay (or time-space time delay) is proposed and the travelling wave solutions are discussed. Specifically, we define the basic reproduction number R0 and the critical wave speed c∗ . For every wave speed c≥c∗ , the existence of travelling wave solutions is studied by using the upper–lower solutions, the fixed-point theorem and some limit techniques when R0>1 . The nonexistence of travelling waves when R0>1 for any 0 or R0<1 for any c >0 is also proved. Finally, the influence of time-delay on disease propagation, especially the critical wave speed, is discussed through analysis and simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a reaction-diffusion cholera model with hyperinfectious vibrios and spatio-temporal delay. In the model, it is assumed that cholera has a fixed latent period and the latent individuals can diffuse, and a non-local term is incorporated to describe the mobility of individuals during the latent period. It is shown that the existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions are fully determined by the basic reproduction number R0 and the critical wave speed c*. Firstly, when R0>1 and the wave speed c > c*, the existence of strong traveling waves is obtained by using Schauder’s fixed point theorem and Lyapunov functional approach. By employing a limiting argument, the existence of strong traveling waves is established when R0>1 and c = c*. Next, when R0≤1, the nonexistence of traveling wave solutions is established by contradiction. Besides, when R0>1 and c < c*, the nonexistence of traveling wave solutions is obtained by means of two-sided Laplace transform. This indicates that c* is indeed the minimal wave speed. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the existence and non-existence of traveling wave solutions for a diffusive age-structured SIR epidemic model. One of the main features of this model is that the susceptible, infected and removed individuals are all involved in this model, and the total population is not assumed a constant. In this paper, we show that the basic reproduction number <math>R0</math> corresponding to the spatially homogeneous system is an important threshold parameter in determining the existence of the traveling wave solutions. More precisely, when <math>R0>1</math> and the wave speed is greater than the minimal wave speed <math>c*,</math> we establish the existence of traveling wave solutions. On the other hand, when <math>R0>1</math> and <math>0</math> or <math>R0<1,</math> we show the non-existence of traveling wave solutions. Our study provides some insights on how to deal with the high dimensional age-structured epidemic models.

Abstract:In this paper, the minimal-speed selection mechanism to a Lotka–Volterra type of model with local versus nonlocal diffusions and cubic nonlinearity is considered. By using comparison principle and upper-lower solution method, general criteria for both linear and nonlinear selection of the minimal wave speed are derived. Based on these results, several explicit conditions for determining the linear selection of the minimal wave speed are obtained via the constructions of various upper solutions. These conditions can help us to confirm that the species will spread with the speed of a linearised system and take an insight into thresholds for different model parameters. Moreover, it is found that the model with cubic nonlinearity causes a very different mechanism compared to the one caused by quadratic nonlinearity. For example, the linear selection can be realized when the diffusion strength is in an infinite interval for the model with cubic nonlinearity. Finally, it should be pointed out that concrete conditions for nonlinear selection are not obtained due to the failure of construction of a lower solution, and are left for further work.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the periodic traveling wave solutions in a nonautonomous reaction-diffusion susceptible-infected-removed epidemic model with general nonlinear incidence and time-periodic environment. The basic reproduction number R0 and the critical wave speed c * are defined. By the fixed-point theorem and upper–lower solutions, the sufficient conditions for the existence of traveling waves satisfying some asymptotic boundary conditions are deduced, and the nonexistence of periodic traveling waves is also obtained. Numerical simulations are carried out to support the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an SIR epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and double free boundaries, which can be used to describe a class of biological phenomena: the depletion of native resources by all individuals, the infected individuals do not lose their fertility completely, the recovered individuals are immune and no longer infected, the infected and recovered individuals spread along the same free boundary. We first investigate the existence and uniqueness of global solution, long time behaviors and some sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing. Then we estimate the spreading speed and derive that accelerated spreading could happen when the kernel function does not satisfy a threshold condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an epidemic model in a periodic patchy environment. It is assumed that all the parameters share the same period N∈N. When the basic reproduction number R0>1, we first establish the spreading speed of traveling wave, which is denoted by c*. Then we show that for each c ≥ c*, the system admits a nontrivial traveling wave solution with the speed c if R0>1. We also show that there is no nontrivial traveling wave solution when R0≤1 and c > 0, or R0>1 and c ∈ (0, c*). This indicates that the spreading speed coincides with the minimum wave speed of traveling waves. Finally, we discuss the dependence of R0 and c* on the heterogeneity and amplitude of the parameters of our model.

Abstract:In this work, we consider a diffusive SIR-B epidemic model with multiple transmission pathways and saturating incidence rates. We first present the explicit formula of the basic reproduction number R-0. Then we show that if R-0 > 1, there exists a constant c* > 0 such that the system admits traveling wave solutions connecting the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium with speed c if and only if c >= c*. Since the system does not admit the comparison principle, we appeal to the standard Schauder's fixed point theorem to prove the existence of traveling waves. Moreover, a suitable Lyapunov function is constructed to prove the upward convergence of traveling waves.
Dynamics for a diffusive epidemic model with a free boundary: spreading speed

Abstract:We study the spreading speed of a diffusive epidemic model proposed by Li et al. \cite{LL}, where the Stefan boundary condition is imposed at the right boundary, and the left boundary is subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann condition, respectively. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy and some sharp criteria were obtained in \cite{LL}. In this paper, when spreading happens, we not only obtain the exact spreading speed of the spreading front described by the right boundary, but derive some sharp estimates on the asymptotical behavior of solution component $(u,v)$. Our arguments depend crucially on some detailed understandings for a corresponding semi-wave problem and a steady state problem.

Abstract:This article studies the spreading properties in an asymptotic autonomous non-cooperative system that can be regarded as an epidemic model or a predator–prey system. In particular, due to the effect of nonlocal delay, it is possible that the system does not satisfy the comparison principle for mixed quasimonotone systems. When the initial value has proper decaying behavior, we obtain a constant spreading speed of solutions. Finally, the main result is applied to a stage-structured susceptible-latent-infected-recovered-matured epidemic model to show its spreading feature by presenting the spreading speed about the susceptible and the infected.

In terms of the basic reproduction number $R_0$ of the corresponding periodic ordinary differential model and the minimal wave speed $c^*$, we establish the existence of periodic traveling wave solutions by the method of super- and sub-solutions, the fixed-point theorem, as applied to a truncated problem on a large but finite interval, and the limiting arguments. We further obtain the nonexistence of periodic traveling wave solutions for two cases involved with $R_0$ and $c^*$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions for a nonlocal dispersal susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (for short SEIR) model with standard incidence rate. By utilizing a proper iteration technique, Schauder's fixed point theorem and the limiting argument, the existence of traveling wave solutions with wave velocity greater than critical wave velocity c ⁎ is established. The main difficulty lies in the boundedness of traveling waves caused by nonlocal diffusion operators. Meanwhile, the non-existence of traveling waves with wave velocity less than c ⁎ is derived by using bilateral Laplace transform. Our research provides some new insights for dealing with high-dimensional infectious disease models with nonlocal dispersal.

Abstract:This paper focuses on a SIRS infectious model of nonlocal dispersal adopted with age structure. We primarily investigate the existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions connecting the disease-free equilibrium state and the endemic equilibrium state. To be more precise, we obtain the existence of traveling wave solutions by constructing suitable upper and lower solutions and then applying Schauder's fixed point theorem when $ R_0 > 1 $ and $ c > c^* $. In addition, we prove the nonexistence of traveling wave solutions by applying the Laplace transform for $ R_0 > 1 $ and $ 0 < c < c^* $.

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in propagation dynamics of a nonlocal dispersal Zika transmission model with general incidence. When the threshold R is greater than one, we prove that there is a wave speed c∗>0 such that the model has a traveling wave solution with speed c>c∗ , and there is no traveling wave solution with speed less than c∗ . When the threshold R is less than or equal to one, we show that there is no nontrivial traveling wave solution. The approaches we use here are Schauder's fixed point theorem with an explicit construction of a pair of upper and lower solutions, the contradictory approach, and the two‐sided Laplace transform.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. To study the influence of the moving front of the infected interval and the spatial movement of individuals on the spreading or vanishing of infectious disease, we consider a nonlocal susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) reaction–diffusion model with media coverage, hospital bed numbers and free boundaries. The principal eigenvalue of the integral operator is defined, and the impacts of the diffusion rate of infected individuals and interval length on the principal eigenvalue are analyzed. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing of the disease are derived. Our results show that large media coverage and hospital bed numbers are beneficial to the prevention and control of disease. The difference between the model with nonlocal diffusion and that with local diffusion is also discussed and nonlocal diffusion leads to more possibilities.
