Abstract:In this paper, we consider a numerical approximation for the boundary optimal control problem with the control constraint governed by a heat equation defined in a variable domain. For this variable domain problem, the boundary of the domain is moving and the shape of the boundary is defined by a known time-dependent function. By making use of the Galerkin finite element method, we first project the original optimal control problem into a semi-discrete optimal control problem governed by a system of ordinary differential equations. Then, based on the aforementioned semi-discrete problem, we apply the control parameterization method to obtain an optimal parameter selection problem governed by a lumped parameter system, which can be solved as a nonlinear optimization problem by a Sequential Quadratic Programming（SQP） algorithm. The numerical simulation is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our numerical approximation for the variable domain problem with the finite element method and the control parameterization method.

Abstract:The optimal bounded control of quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian systems (multi-degree-of-freedom non-integrable Hamiltonian systems subject to light dampings and weakly random excitations) for minimizing their response is investigated. The equations of motion of a controlled quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian system is first reduced to an averaged Ito stochastic differential equation for the Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian systems. Then, a dynamical programming equation for the control problem of minimizing response is formulated. The optimal control law is derived from the dynamical programming equation and the control constraints. Finally, the response of optimally controlled system is predicted from solving the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogrov (FPK) equation associated with completely averaged lto equation. An example is worked out to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:A new bounded optimal control strategy for multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) quasi nonintegrable-Hamiltonian systems with actuator saturation is proposed. First, an n-degree-of-freedom (n-DOF) controlled quasi nonintegrable-Hamiltonian system is reduced to a partially averaged Itô stochastic differential equation by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi nonintegrable-Hamiltonian systems. Then, a dynamical programming equation is established by using the stochastic dynamical programming principle, from which the optimal control law consisting of optimal unbounded control and bang–bang control is derived. Finally, the response of the optimally controlled system is predicted by solving the Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov (FPK) equation associated with the fully averaged Itô equation. An example of two controlled nonlinearly coupled Duffing oscillators is worked out in detail. Numerical results show that the proposed control strategy has high control effectiveness and efficiency and that chattering is reduced significantly compared with the bang–bang control strategy.

Abstract:A strategy for designing optimal bounded control to minimize theresponse of quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian systems is proposed basedon the stochastic averaging method for quasi non-integrable Hamiltoniansystems and the stochastic dynamical programming principle. Abstract:This paper deals with the numerical approximation for the time optimal control problem governed by the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation, which is an unspecified terminal time problem. Firstly, by projecting the original problem with the finite element method (FEM), another approximate problem governed by a system of ordinary differential equations will be obtained. Then, the parameterisation method for the optimal time and the control function will be carried out and the unspecified terminal time problem can be reduced to an optimal parameter selection problem with a fixed time horizon [0, 1]. This optimal parameter selection problem is a standard nonlinear mathematical programming problem and can be solved by sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm. Finally, some numerical simulation studies will be given to illustrate the effectiveness of our numerical approximation method for the time optimal control problem governed by the BBM equation.

Abstract:A new procedure for designing optimal control of quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian systems under stochastic excitations is proposed based on the stochastic averaging method for quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian systems and the stochastic maximum principle. First, the control problem consisting of 2n-dimensional equations governing the controlled quasi non-integrable system and performance index is converted into a partially averaged one consisting of one-dimensional equation of the controlled system and performance index by using the stochastic averaging method. Then, the adjoint equation and the maximum condition of the partially averaged control problem are derived based on the stochastic maximum principle. The optimal control forces are determined from the maximum condition and solving the forward–backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDE). For infinite time-interval ergodic control, the adjoint variable is a stationary process and the FBSDE is reduced to a partial differential equation. Finally, the response statistics of optimally controlled system is predicted by solving the Fokker–Plank equation (FPE) associated with the fully averaged Itô equation of the controlled system. An example of two degree-of-freedom (DOF) quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian system is worked out to illustrate the proposed procedure and its effectiveness.

Abstract:This paper considers an optimal boundary control problem for fluid pipelines with terminal valve control. The goal is to minimize pressure fluctuation during valve closure, thus mitigating water hammer effects. We model the fluid flow by two coupled hyperbolic PDEs with given initial conditions and a boundary control governing valve actuation. To solve the optimal boundary control problem, we apply the control parameterization method to approximate the time-varying boundary control by a linear combination of basis functions, each of which depends on a set of decision parameters. Then, by using variational principles, we derive formulas for the gradient of the objective function (which measures pressure fluctuation) with respect to the decision parameters. Based on the gradient formulas obtained, we propose a gradient-based optimization method for solving the optimal boundary control problem. Numerical results demonstrate the capability of optimal boundary control to significantly reduce pressure fluctuation.

Abstract:A stochastic minimax optimal control strategy for partially observable uncertain quasi-Hamiltonian systems is proposed. First, the stochastic optimal control problem of a partially observable nonlinear uncertain quasi-Hamiltonian system is converted into that of a completely observable linear uncertain system based on a theorem due to Charalambous and Elliot. Then, the converted stochastic optimal control problem is solved by a minimax optimal control strategy based on stochastic averaging method and stochastic differential game. The worst-case disturbances and the optimal controls are obtained by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs (HJI) equation. As an example, the stochastic minimax optimal control of a partially observable Duffing–van der Pol oscillator with uncertain disturbances is worked out in detail to illustrate the procedure and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:We study a class of optimal stochastic control problems arising from the control of movements. Exact solutions are first presented for linear cases for both the during- and post-movement control problem, depending on a parameter @a0. It is found that for the Langevin type equation and for the post-movement control case, a non-degenerate solution exists only when @a1/2. For the Langevin type equation and for the during-movement control, a non-degenerate solution is found when @a1. For the post-movement control and the Hamiltonian type equation, an optimal control signal is obtained and is non-degenerate when @a1/2. Again for the during-movement control, we find an optimal non-degenerate control signal when @a1. All results are then generalized to nonlinear control cases (the first order perturbation of linear cases). Numerical examples are included to illustrate the applications of our results.

Abstract:A minimax optimal control strategy for uncertain quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems with time-delayed bounded feedback control is proposed. First, a quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system with time-delayed bounded control forces and uncertain excitation and system parameters is converted into a set of Itô stochastic differential equations without time delay. Then, the partially averaged Itô stochastic differential equations for the energy processes are derived by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems. For these equations together with an appropriate performance index, a worst-case optimal control strategy is derived via solving a stochastic differential game problem. The worst-case disturbances and the optimal bounded controls are obtained by solving a Hamilton–Jacobi–Isaacs (HJI) equation. Finally, two examples are worked out in detail to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This study is centered on the optimal controllability of differential equations involving fractional derivatives of Katugampola. We derive both necessary and sufficient conditions for optimal controllability by extending Gronwall's inequality with singular kernels. Furthermore, we establish conditions ensuring the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions using the Banach fixed-point theorem and the generalized Laplace transform. To underscore the practical relevance of our findings, we provide an illustrative example.

We first prove the well-posedness and regularity of the optimal control problem. Furthermore, we discuss the fully discrete scheme and analyze its stability and a priori error estimate. Abstract:In this paper, we focus on a method based on optimal control to address the optimization problem. The objective is to find the optimal solution that minimizes the objective function. We transform the optimization problem into optimal control by designing an appropriate cost function. Using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle and the associated forward-backward difference equations (FBDEs), we derive the iterative update gain for the optimization. The steady system state can be considered as the solution to the optimization problem. Finally, we discuss the compelling characteristics of our method and further demonstrate its high precision, low oscillation, and applicability for finding different local minima of non-convex functions through several simulation examples.

Abstract:In this work, we study an optimal boundary control problem for a Cahn - Hilliard -Navier-Stokes (CHNS) system in a two dimensional bounded domain. The CHNS system consists of a Navier-Stokes equation governing the fluid velocity field coupled with a convective Cahn - Hilliard equation for the relative concentration of the fluids. An optimal control problem is formulated as the minimization of a cost functional subject to the controlled CHNS system where the control acts on the boundary of the Navier-Stokes equations. We first prove that there exists an optimal boundary control. Then we establish that the control-to-state operator is Frechet differentiable and derive first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality involving the adjoint system.

Abstract:This paper focuses on optimal control problem for a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems. In practical applications, computation time is a crucial consideration in solving optimal control problem, especially when meeting the real-time requirements of control systems. To address this challenge, this study proposes a novel framework based on the optimal control method. Firstly, the original optimal control problem is transformed into an equivalent optimization problem, which is resolved using the Pontryagin's maximum principle from the perspective of optimal control. Furthermore, explicit formulas for computing both the gradient and hessian matrix of the cost function are proposed. A numerical algorithm with rapid convergence and high efficiency is also provided.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the optimal control problem for the k-FORQ/MCH equation with strong viscosity.We prove the existence and uniqueness of this equation under the initial and boundary conditions by Galerkin method. From these results and the Lion's theory we deduce the existence of an optimal solution to the control problem governed by the viscous k-FORQ/MCH equation. Using augmented Lagrangian method, we deduce the first-order necessary optimality condition and two second-order sufficient optimality conditions.

Abstract:This article investigates a stochastic H2/H∞ control problem under volatility ambiguity. The solvability of the control problem is equivalent to the solvability of two sets of cross‐coupled generalized differential Riccati equations. In this article, we consider a stochastic H2/H∞ control problem under volatility ambiguity. In this framework, the state function is described by a stochastic differential equation driven by G ‐Brownian motion. Different from the classical approach, the volatility ambiguity is characterized by a family of non‐dominated probability measures. H2 control can be modeled as a "inf‐sup problem" and H∞ control can be modeled as a "sup‐sup problem." With the help of stochastic maximum principle and dynamic programming principle, we derive the stochastic bounded real lemma and two sets of cross coupled generalized differential Riccati equations, which is associated with the solvability of H2/H∞ control.

Abstract:This paper deals with a nonlinear controlled Schrödinger equation which is perturbed by an additive Gaussian noise in the form of a Q-Wiener process. The nonlinearity is especially characterized by Lipschitz-continuity and growth-boundedness. Moreover, suitable initial and Neumann boundary conditions are introduced. Referring to the concept of a variational solution throughout this work, the existence and uniqueness of such a solution of the Schrödinger problem will be investigated. The main goal is to minimize a given objective functional by an optimal control. However, the objective functional depends on the solution of the controlled Schrödinger problem and the control itself. Therefore, the adjoint equation (of the stochastic Schrödinger equation) with appropriate final and Neumann boundary conditions is required. Based on a generalized solution of this adjoint problem and some important estimates concerning the difference of two solutions of the Schrödinger problem corresponding to two controls, a gradient formula in the sense of Gâteaux is calculated. Thus, a necessary optimality condition can be stated.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an optimal control problem for an elliptic obstacle problem. Using a family of semi-linear elliptic partial differential equations to approximate the obstacle problem, we obtain an approximate optimal problem for partial differential equations. Then, we propose a new method to prove the objective functional in the approximate optimal problem is Gâteaux-differentiable and compute its gradient. The gradient descent algorithm and Gauss Newton algorithm are presented to find the numerical solution. Numerical results show the efficiency and stability of the algorithms.
